The new standard in home building is here COURTESY OF CREEKSTONE HOMES

CreekStone Homes is proud to announce their new model home in Wolf Ranch will be opening in May! After more than 20 years as one of the premier builders in the area, this new model marks the beginning of a completely new approach for CreekStone. As the flagship home for their partnership with Owens Corning and the ComfortBuilt system, the new model features the complete process of building science that will now go into every new CreekStone home. With HERS (Home Energy Rating System) ratings that are unmatched in Colorado Springs, higher year-round performance and the overall improved livability delivered through the ComfortBuilt system, CreekStone is committed to bringing this innovative process to Colorado Springs and Denver. “We’re very happy to be building our award-winning homes in new communities with these amazing energy efficiency standards. Knowing that over 80 percent of new homebuyers consider the performance of their homes to be as important as the performance of their cars and computers made the decision to convert to ComfortBuilt standards an easy one,” said Jason Rose of CreekStone Homes. “The shift in energy efficiency has become our company culture — a way of life. We’re very excited to be moving in this direction.

Roofing materials transform the look and functionality of a home METRO SERVICES

Replacing or renovating a roof can be an impactful home improvement project. When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It's easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home's interior as well. Roofing materials have evolved over the years, but the most common type of roofing material is the asphalt shingle. These shingles are a relatively modern invention, with the first "asphalt prepared roofing" serving as a forerunner to asphalt shingles, appearing in the late 1800s. Roofing materials will need to meet a particular area's fire codes and must be able to withstand any extreme weather conditions common to the geographic region where the home is located. Certain roofing materials may be heavier than others and may require special framing. Work with an experienced roofing contractor to learn more about your available options and to shed light on any special installation or maintenance issues to consider before construction begins. The following are just some of the roofing materials homeowners may want to consider. • Asphalt shingles: The most popular roofing material, asphalt shingles are guaranteed for 20 to 30 years,

which helps solidify this choice as a smart-value product. For some homeowners, a downside to shingles is that, because they are so popular, they're seen everywhere. So those homeowners looking to make a unique statement with their roofing materials may want to choose a different option. • Wood shingles and shakes: A wood roof is another possibility, but some homeowners find wood roofs require

more money to install and more effort to maintain than roofs made with other materials. Wood shingles are sawn from logs and are thin, while shakes are thick, rough and formed by being split from logs. • Clay or concrete tiles: These tiles add texture and elegance to a roof, says HGTV. Clay or concrete tiles are very durable and quite heavy, so they must be installed by a professional. These tiles can make Mediterranean-,

Spanish- or mission-style houses stand out even more. Their longlasting nature can help offset the price tag. • Metal: Metal roofs are usually made from fully recyclable steel, aluminum or alloy, making them an eco-friendly choice. Metal roofs also reflect the sun's rays and can be an energyefficient option in hot climates. • Slate: One of the longest-lasting materials available in roofing

products, slate is fireproof and comes in various natural colors and shapes. Once installed, slate requires very little maintenance. However, slate can be cost-prohibitive because its delicacy and weight requires extra roofing support and professional installation. Changing a roof means years of improved performance and an instant uplift to the look of a home. ■

The powerful reason why failure is actually an OK option BY ANNE FISHER  MONSTER.COM

Nothing quite terrifies a person like the fear of failure. Whether you’re graduating with the class of 2017 in a few weeks or you’re contemplating a career change, it’s hard not to wonder, what if you fall flat on your face? But what if you don’t? Sarah Robb O’Hagan, author of Extreme You: Step Up. Stand Out. Kick Ass. Repeat, says now is the time to step up and lose your fear of failure. “No one succeeds without failure,” Robb O’Hagan says. “It’s a necessary step on the way to success. So swing hard, do your best, and don’t be afraid. If you play it safe your whole career, you’ll never know what you might have achieved.” In Extreme You, a kind of Lean In on steroids, Robb O’Hagan relates her life story so far — warts and all. After enduring a spell she now calls her “canyon of career despair,” when she was fired from a handful of high-profile jobs, all while being threatened with deportation, she landed on her feet, going on to lead the reinvention of Gatorade, become president of global fitness firm Equinox, and launch her own content platform Extreme You. Currently, she’s the CEO of boutique fitness studio Flywheel Sports. “Looking back on that entire tough period, it’s clear that my wrong moves are what led me to my right moves,” she says. Monster recently spoke with Robb O’Hagan about building a career that, as she puts it, “lets you bring all of you to all you do.”

What’s your best advice for the class of 2017? Is there anything you wish someone had told you at the start of your career?

meaning, you should seek out new experiences. Pick things that appeal to you or that you haven’t done in a long time — or ever. Then, notice what happens. What grabs your interest? Where do you succeed — or just feel energized — where you wouldn’t have expected it? Those are the areas to work on and develop. It’s never too late! Your experiences will help you with the new path you choose, possibly in some surprising ways.

Q. A. Author and entrepreneur Sarah Robb O’Hagan explains why you won’t reach the height of your success without a few flops along the way.

The system is designed to make us all fit in because it’s so much easier for professors, recruiters, and even parents to point you toward a well-beaten path as the “right” way to develop your life and your career. But when you conform to the norm, by definition, you are rounding your edges off, and in my experience, the edges are usually the most interesting parts. So I think my best answer is, do not worry about your how your first job after graduation — or even your second and third — looks to other people. Your 20s

are a time to try different things, to get as much varied experience as you can, and to find out what you’re interested in — not necessarily to lock yourself into any one path.

Q. A.

That’s probably easier said than done for most people, isn’t it? Oh, it is! We put such tremendous pressure on young people now to have the perfect resume, perfect grades, and so on, and then on social media they find this perfect world where it looks like everyone’s crushing it.

Try to avoid striving for perfection because it will make you so much more risk-averse. The most successful people understand what’s unique about them and (use it to benefit) a team or a company. That’s quite different from trying to shrink yourself down into a given role.

Q. A.

What if you’re mid-career and feel like you need a change? How do you get started? In the book, I talk about “checking yourself out,”

Let’s say you have a failure or two under your belt. How do you explain that in a job interview? One thing employers look for is self-awareness. Do you know what your strengths and weaknesses are? Early in my career, I was always told never to admit to a weakness — or to make it something irrelevant to the job, like, “I’m a terrible driver,” but that really doesn’t work. It’s much better to be very direct and say, “Here’s why I failed and what I learned from that.” My own failures taught me I needed to surround myself with people who have strengths I lack and whose skills are complementary to mine, so together we can get great things done. If you can give examples of that kind of teamwork, the interviewer will respect that. It’s much more believable than trying to pretend you’ve never failed at anything. ■ Anne Fisher has been writing about career and workplace trends and topics for Fortune and other publications since 1996. ways established professionals can improve their résumés

Changing jobs can be a difficult decision to make, especially later in one’s career. In many ways, landing a new job is more challenging than ever thanks to the technology-driven society in which people live. Information is shared faster than ever, and applying for jobs isn’t the same as it might have been as recently as a decade ago. One thing that has evolved is the résumé. Although creating a powerful résumé has always been a challenge, writing — or modifying one — for today’s digital world requires some insider tips. Adapting a résumé as one ages and has gained experience can be advantageous. A well-crafted résumé is one way for professionals to demonstrate how their skill set is current and adaptable to today’s business climate. The following tips can help improve a résumé when the time comes to move on to a new job.

1. Focus on your accomplishments Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how

you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

2. Aim for the future Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your

career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.

3. Choose the right keywords It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct

keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

4. Set yourself apart Engage in activities that can improve

your marketability. Be sure to list training, coursework, degree, or volunteer efforts that pertain directly to the skills needed for the job to which you’re applying. These additions can tip the scales in your favor over another applicant. Résumés continue to evolve, and it is crucial for applicants — especially established workers — to familiarize themselves with the changes and market themselves accordingly. ■
