CHICAGO — Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, appear to have paid $1.25 million for a fivebedroom, 3,000-square-foot house in

the South Side Hyde Park neighborhood through a land trust on April 4. Seattle attorney Christopher Carletti, who frequently represents the Gates family in

property transactions, is listed on the Hyde Park property’s deed as the trustee for the trust that purchased the Hyde Park home. Carletti declined to respond to numerous

requests for comment. The purchase deed for the Hyde Park home states that its property tax bills will be sent to a second-floor office unit in a

Listing agent Shirley Walker of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff said she was not aware of the identity of the buyer of the Hyde Park house. The agent who represented the buyer, Dana Gerstenschlager, initially said that he was unaware that the Gateses were the buyers and claimed that the buyers were from a different Western state than Washington. In a subsequent interview, however, Gerstenschlager declined to comment altogether. Representatives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation did not respond to

multiple inquiries for comment. Bill and Melinda Gates’ residential real estate portfolio includes their principal home — a 50,050-square-foot mansion in Medina, Wash. — as well as mansions in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. and in Indian Wells, Calif., among other properties. In recent years, they also bought an entire street in Wellington, Fla. for a reported $37 million. While Bill and Melinda Gates would be the wealthiest Chicago-area property owners in history, they’re not the only megabillionaires ever to take part in Chicago-area residential real estate activity. Craig Rogers is a Realtor who loves representing his clients when they’re buying and selling homes. He is immeasurably proud to be with The Platinum Group, Realtors, and to be a member of Peak Producers… But he’s equally proud to be “Coach Rogers.” As a 40-year resident of the Pikes Peak region, and a graduate of both Manitou Springs High School and Colorado College, Rogers is now giving back to his community by coaching sports at Coronado High School (where his son is a student athlete) in his free time. “Free time” being a bit of a misnomer in Craig’s case. To put things in perspective, Rogers describes a typical day-in-the-life scenario of being a Realtor: “The days of going out and showing a house or two, running back to the office, writing an offer and having a house under contract by the end of the day are a thing of the past. Now, it’s more like showing 20 to 25 houses, writing several offers above asking price, dealing

with escalation clauses and appraisal protection, and then praying that you can get your buyers under contract within a month or so. There is a lot of writing spur-of-the-moment contracts on multiple properties, often very early in the morning or late at night.” Previously a head tennis professional at Garden of the Gods Club from 19982005, Rogers has volunteered his time as a varsity tennis coach at Coronado High School for the past four seasons. He has also been involved in Coronado’s basketball and baseball programs. As he heads to practices, matches and games at Coronado and various other high schools, it’s typical for Rogers to be on the phone for the entire trip. Says Rogers, “Ordinarily, I don’t make or take calls during practices or matches, but I do sneak in a few texts along the way.” Still, he ensures that his real estate clients are also on the winning track. After he has finished coaching for the day, “there is the inevitable catching up I need to do after. I put in the extra effort in the evenings to make certain

that my clients are taken care of. Often that involves not eating dinner until after 9 p.m.” But Rogers is game for it all, because in many ways, coaching has provided its own personal victories. “It’s very rewarding to show an athlete something that they can immediately incorporate into their game to help them perform better. I have a special coaching session called ‘Coach Rogers’ Pet Peeves,’ where I provide a number of tips that I see players utilize right away. It is so cool to see the light bulb go on in a student athlete’s head and share the joy they get from their improved performance. Watching them improve and gain confidence is the best!” It helps that Craig is simultaneously able to get in family time by coaching his son, Ashton Rogers. Ashton will have earned eight varsity letters by the time he graduates with a 4.5 GPA this spring, was awarded the Jack K. Agee Memorial Scholarship through Pikes Peak Kiwanis, and will be attending the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as a Chancellor’s

Of coaching Ashton in Tennis, Craig says, “Watching him come back from a big deficit to win against a very good player from Denver East, and in doing so qualify for State was the pinnacle.” Ashton is the first Coronado singles player to make the state tournament since 2015. Although Ashton is graduating, Craig plans to continue coaching. He says, “It is something that I hope to continue long after. Having a winning personality is probably the most important factor when it comes to making a great first impression on anyone. Especially a hiring manager. Your character and behavior are strong indicators of how well you’ll get along with the rest of the company, so it should come as no surprise when they ask you to describe your personality early on during a job interview. “Hiring managers want to see what your attitude and outlook is on work and life,” says Jay Fusaro, author of “From the Other Side of the Desk: A Practical Guide to Shortening Your Job Search.” Sounds easy enough — after all, if there’s one subject you’re an expert in, it’s you — but it’s very common to get tripped up when you have to put into words what you’re like as a human being. (And no, “I’m great! What more can I say?” won’t fly.)

Be honest

One way to interpret this interview question is to respond as if you’re being asked, “How would your colleagues describe your personality?” For example: “My boss consistently tells me I’m a team player. When we fell behind on a big project last year, I offered to stay late and helped us meet our deadline.”

Choose the right buzzwords

A recent survey from the Society for Human Resource Management found that employers actually care more about soft skills than they do technical abilities like reading comprehension and mathematics. It also revealed the 15 soft skills employers commonly look for in entry-level job seekers. In turn, weaving a few of these skills into your answer can make you a more attractive candidate: • Integrity

In my last job, I applied that to a number of tasks...” For a customer service job: “I’m a problem-solver by nature.
