areas to tackle during spring cleaning
TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE Spring cleaning is the time to tackle those places we usually ignore during our routine home tidying. Cleaning professionals say to divide your focus between the secondary areas of the home and the machines that do the usual cleaning. Caring for these products now can make cleaning efficient. “It seems like it’s more work (to take care of these items), but at the end of the day, if you’re cleaning with a product that is cleaning better, you’re going to save time,” said Julien Levesque, associate director of category management at SharkNinja.
DISHWASHER AND WASHING MACHINE
Both of these machines can suffer from hard-water buildup and limescale, especially since they’re on duty several times during the week. Kelly Tucker, a cleaning expert at the Institute of Home
Science and Maytag, says Affresh ($5.38, Lowe’s) removes the limescale and mineral buildup, and it’s safe to use with dishes. Affresh also makes a washing machine cleaner ($7.18, Lowe’s) and several other similar products. Debra Johnson, home cleaning expert at Merry Maids, also highly recommends giving a washing machine a thorough cleaning, considering the variety of items that can go in there — from clothes and towels to throw rugs and pet linens. To clean water lines, she recommends running a cup of distilled white vinegar on a hot washing cycle. Borax ($4.47, Walmart) is another option. The newer, quieter dishwashers have filters that need cleaning, Johnson said. To clean a sticky dishwasher filter, remove and soak it for a while in an allpurpose solution. Simple Green ($4.99, TrueValue) is an environmentally friendly all-purpose cleaner.
Warm areas in contact with water can sometimes harbor mold or mildew. Although bleach kills mold, a safer bleachalternative is CLR Bleach-free Mold & Mildew Foaming Action Stain Remover, ($5.48, www.jet.com)
DRYER
Lint buildup in dryer vents can be a fire hazard. Johnson says to start by removing the lint screen on the dryer and using the crevice tool on your vacuum to remove trapped lint. To get to the dryer vent, Tucker and Johnson suggest using a dryer vent brush to pull out any lingering lint. One option is the LintEater Dryer Vent Lint Removal Kit. ($29.98, Lowe’s)
BED
Sure, you change your sheets and probably dust the headboard, but don’t forget under the bed. It can be hard to get a vacuum under the bed,
especially an upright, but a vacuum like SharkNinja’s new IONFlex ($359, sharkclean.com) is designed to fit under tight spaces like beds and dressers. It has tools for specialized cleaning, such as for crevices. A manual alternative to remove dust bunnies is OXO’s underappliance duster. ($12.99, oxo.com)
dusting, opt for a microfiber duster, like OXO’s Delicate Duster ($6.99, oxo.com) over a feather duster. Microfibers trap dust rather than just moving it around, Johnson said. Microfiber dusters also work on delicate fabrics that might suffer from vacuuming.
DRAPES, UPHOLSTERY AND SHADES
Tucker says dirt, dust, grease and pet hair can collect on your refrigerator condenser coils, making your fridge work harder. To clean, unplug it and remove the base grill. Using a vacuum’s soft brush attachment, clean the front surface area and open areas behind the grill. This is also a good time to check your filters and replace them if necessary. Toss any funny-tasting ice, and wash the storage bin with warm water and a mild detergent, and dry completely before returning it to the freezer, Tucker adds.
The longer daylight and sunnier days spring brings can highlight dusty areas. Forced-air furnaces can produce dust, and particulates can be especially heavy in homes with wood-burning fireplaces. “Now you can see everything you thought you were cleaning,” Johnson said. Use the vacuum’s upholstery brush on drapes, especially if you can’t remove them for washing, and the crevice tool to get in-between couch cushions. To clean blinds and lampshades, and for general

US construction spending up 1.8 percent in April to record THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — U.S. construction spending surged 1.8 percent to a record high in April as home building rose by the largest amount in 24 years. The April gain reversed a 1.7 percent drop in March, the Commerce Department reported Friday. The strength stemmed from a sizable 4.5
percent rise in residential construction, the biggest percentage gain since November 1993. Non-residential construction rose by a more modest 0.8 percent while spending on government projects fell 1.3 percent as both the federal government and state and local governments saw declines.
The overall gain pushed construction to an all-time high of $1.31 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, 7.6 percent above the level of a year ago. Construction is expected to provide a healthy contribution to economic growth this year. The gain in home construction marked
a rebound from a 2.6 percent drop in March and was driven by a 3.6 percent jump in the volatile apartment sector. Spending on single-family homes was flat in April. But the overall level of residential spending was the highest since October 2006. The increase in nonresidential spending included a 3 percent rise in

spending on hotels and motels and a 1.8 percent rise in office building. The weakness in government spending reflects in part tight budgets at all levels of government. State and local construction spending edged down 0.3 percent, while spending by the federal government dropped 10.2 percent.

Pikes Peak Association of Realtors announces El Paso County Commissioner endorsements for Districts 1 and 5 NEWSWIRE The Pikes Peak Association of Realtors (PPAR) announced its endorsement for El Paso County Commissioners in time for the upcoming primary election, which will be held by mail ballot. Ballots must be received by June 26. PPAR interviewed candidates, and based their decision on a series of questions posed to each candidate. The interview panel asked candidates about
how they would address issues such as transfer taxes, private property rights, as well as issues specific to each district. The group requested the candidates share what they foresee as being short- and long-term economic challenges in the region, and their proposed solutions. Candidates were also asked their thoughts on transportation and infrastructure. This is important criteria for Realtors
when endorsing candidates, that the candidates understand the importance the housing industry plays in the economy, and more importantly, that the candidates understand that transfer taxes and fees are not a viable option for homeowners. “The Pikes Peak Association of Realtors is pleased to endorse Holly Williams for District 1, and Cami Bremer
for District 5, (of the El Paso County Commission),” said Debbie Howes, PPAR Chair of the Board. “Each of the candidates demonstrated the needed knowledge, experience and pro-business attitude that our association appreciates in our local public servants.” Howes added that both Holly and Cami possess a deep knowledge of housing and Realtor issues, and that they are

Design trends to try in every room TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE Sometimes, moving the furniture around isn’t enough. We need something new and inspiring — something we can fall in love with. And, sometimes the latest color and style trends are the answer. Here’s a room-by-room look at some of the most irresistible current trends — and how you can incorporate them into your own home design.
THE RECLAIMED LIVING ROOM
The living room is where people are showcasing reclaimed and natural materials. As our interiors — and even our daily lives — grow ever more modern, we want to maintain those grounding elements where we can. People are capturing this essence with live plants, artisanal focal pieces and natural textures like woven fabrics and grain-baring wood. Pieces like upcycled palette coffee tables and recovered and refinished antique chairs bring warmth and character. And global elements like pillows and baskets add interest and balance to the space.
THE MIXED-UP KITCHEN
Dining rooms have fallen out of favor. Today, we’re seeing more eat-in islands and banquet seating in the kitchen. As our lives grow busier, we’re making space in the kitchen to talk, cook, and connect with one another. And we’re integrating charging stations into kitchen drawers to keep our devices charged and connected too. Kitchen aesthetics are trending toward mix-and-match colors and materials. Think light butcher block wood countertops paired with stark black cabinets. Or a navy blue wooden island paired with white modern cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. The latest innovations in cabinetry and drawers are tucking appliances out of sight. And manufacturers are designing appliances to blend with your kitchen materials in a trend known as integrating appliances.
THE PROGRAMMABLE BATHROOM It may be hard to believe, but the
toilet is one of the biggest bathroom trends this year. Installing highefficiency toilets is a quick and easy way to make your home more efficient, and even to modernize your bathroom aesthetic. These toilets are sleek and minimal, and they’re available in a variety of styles — including bidet. You can also find options that open and flush automatically. Toilets aren’t the only bathroom element that’s gotten smarter. You can now program showers to your exact desired temperature, install a Bluetooth speaker anywhere in your bathroom, and even watch a small television screen on your vanity mirror! Design-wise, bathrooms are trending toward bolder tile selections, concrete features like overlay sinks and sleek black hardware.
THE ENRICHED BEDROOM
Moody, rich colors are having a moment in the bedroom. Navy blues, velvety purples and even pollen-like yellows can add depth and character — whether they’re incorporated as furniture, accent walls, or lush pillows, linens and rugs. Decor choices, however, continue to trend toward minimalism. We’re doing our best to leave our technology, our bills and our to-do lists at the bedroom door so we can truly unwind and refresh ourselves for another day. Plants are also showing up in our bedrooms, as they are in many other parts of the home. As art, pillows, prints and linens — and especially as living succulents and leafy indoor trees — plants are becoming an integral part of interior design. One final trend happening in the bedroom is the mixing of bold patterns. This trend could easily make a room look garish, but people are coming up with new and creative ways to make opposite patterns complement each other. Bold stripes are being propped against soft florals, and stark geometric patterns are being married with rough-hewn textures.
Soapboxes change. Good journalism doesn’t.

Candidates must be able to provide reliable transportation for work and function well with technology.
Ever suspect that one of your co-workers is trying to sabotage you? It very well could be the case. Backstabbing is something most people will have to deal with at some point, says Diane Domeyer, executive director of The Creative Group. “Almost everyone feels some pressure to get ahead at work, especially in competitive fields,” she says. In fact, almost one-third (31 percent) of advertising and marketing executives surveyed said a colleague has tried to make them look bad on the job, according to research by Domeyer’s firm. “However,” Domeyer explains, “some professionals take setting themselves apart from their co-workers to a harmful level.” Workplace saboteurs come in several types, including: • Belittlers, who hurl put-downs, demeaning remarks and disparaging comments. • Credit thieves, who steal your ideas and grab the glory when a project is successful. • Finger pointers, who pin the blame on others when the project goes wrong. • Rumor mongers, stirring up drama by spreading gossip, lies and half-truths that destroy reputations. • Slackers, who shirk responsibility and foist duties onto others. • Scorched-earth managers, who will undermine or even fire a smart, capable worker when they feel threatened by brains and talent. The question is how should you deal with a co-worker who double-crosses you? Read on to understand the motivations of these conspirators, and how you can beat them at their own game. Why do people engage in backstabbing? First thing’s first: It could be possible that some workplace weasels may simply be unaware of how their actions are negatively affecting others. More likely, staff saboteurs are probably just thinking of themselves. “Putting down co-workers may make them feel like they’ll be seen in a better light in comparison, or they may feel insecure about their own job status or performance and try to call attention to their co-workers’ shortfalls,” says Domeyer. In fact, some workers might believe that backstabbing behavior is a form of “doing what it takes” to get ahead, says Janel Anderson, Ph.D., owner of Working Conversations, an organizational consulting firm, and author of Head On: How to Approach Difficult Conversations Directly. “I believe they see themselves as protecting their own interests,” she says. In some cases, the employee might even have been a past victim of backstabbing who became more cutthroat as a result, Anderson adds. How to respond to backstabbing The first thing you need to do is figure out if you actually are the victim of sabotage, and if so, who is behind it. “The tricky thing about identifying who may be a saboteur is that many of their actions are subtle,” says Domeyer. Some telltale signs could be if a co-worker tries to bait you into gossiping about another staffer, or if someone else is getting all the kudos for work that you have done. Or perhaps you are called out for a mistake that no one else knew about—except the one person who you confided in. Once your suspicions are confirmed, here are a couple of ways you can handle it: Have a talk with the person. By no means should you corner the suspect by the water cooler and start an angry confrontation, says Domeyer, but giving your colleague a chance to explain their actions may sometimes help resolve the problem. “In general, you should always take some time to look at the situation from every angle, and never react in the heat of the moment,” she says. Once you’re calm, ask the person if you can speak in private, faceto-face, and tell them how what they did made you feel. As for what to say, Anderson advises that
you maintain a professional tone throughout the conversation, and cite evidence of your suspicion. Say something like, “When we discussed our opinions about our boss over happy hour last week, we agreed the conversation was confidential. I was just approached by our boss and he clearly knew of our conversation.” Be prepared for the backstabber to try to cover their tracks as you confront them, but don’t back down. “If they know they can’t get away with this behavior with you,” says Anderson, “they will move on.” If the two of you can’t work it out or the situation escalates, alert your manager or human resources department to help solve the issue, says Domeyer. Escalate the issue. Is there ever a time when it makes more sense to skip the confrontation with the backstabber and go straight to the boss? That’s complicated, says Anderson. The last thing you want is to be perceived as jealous, difficult to work with, or a tattletale. “Think about how the situation may look from your manager’s viewpoint,” she says. A good rule of thumb when deciding if you should go talk to your manager is whether there is a business impact, such as if a project deadline wasn’t completed (and the blame was put on you). “If the backstabber’s end result has a negative impact on a business outcome, it is easier to make a compelling case,” says Anderson. Ignore it. If someone’s actions have irked you on a personal level but didn’t have a negative effect on your job, consider taking the high road, and even try setting a better example. “Don’t feed into the toxicity of an excessively competitive environment,” says Domeyer. “Instead, give credit for others’ work, communicate well with your colleagues, and support others’ ideas and achievements.” Ways to thwart backstabbing in the future The best way to deal with an office traitor moving forward is to avoid them as much as possible — and cover your tracks. Here are some strategies: Maintain a paper trail. “When you must work closely with someone who you suspect may be a backstabber, keep a record of decisions made, work deadlines, and anything else they may use nefariously,” says Anderson. So if a conversation about a project takes place, follow up with a brief email to the person and outline what was decided so that nothing can be denied later. Send your manager updates. If someone is trying to take credit for your work, giving your manager frequent project updates where possible, so they know who is responsible for each task, will make it more difficult for a sneaky coworker to steal your spotlight, says Domeyer. Avoid gossip. Often backstabbers will fuel the gossip mill with opinions you may have shared in confidence. Remember, nothing is off the record to a potential backstabber. “Keep your cards close to the vest regarding your opinions about others in the organization,” says Anderson. Be aware, even in casual settings. You need to be extra vigilant if you suspect there to be a backstabber in your midst, especially during times when you might otherwise be relaxed, like lunchtime, happy hour, or even casual hallway conversations, says Anderson. “Backstabbers will soak up whatever you say in these more intimate moments to use against you.” You can’t necessarily stop backstabbing from taking place in your workplace, but knowing how to recognize and overcome it is an important skill set to develop, says Domeyer. “Being able to handle challenging or difficult coworkers — and maintaining healthy working relationships — is crucial for career success.”
