SOLID ROCK CUSTOM HOMES:
Live Extraordinary. SPONSORED FEATURE BY KATE YOUNG
With the 2018 Parade of Homes quickly approaching, there is a palpable excitement for the beauty, innovation and craftsmanship that will be featured in this year’s exhibition. One project that is generating substantial buzz for 2018 is “Bella Découvre” by Solid Rock Custom Homes. This parade home is defining a new term in style and design, a term that will soon be sweeping the industry: the Rustic Industrial Modern or R.I.M. More information on this project will be revealed in July 2018, so be sure to check out The Gazette on July 15, and follow the project unveiling on the Solid Rock Custom Homes Facebook page. More than just nails and wood go into the making of a home. Memories made from watching your kids grow, summer entertaining, family gatherings and more, reflect the genuine value of a home that’s built distinctively to complement your life. For over 23 years Solid Rock Custom Homes has been building and remodeling beautiful homes throughout the Pikes Peak Region. The family-owned and operated business understands that each home is a pathway to helping their clients build their futures, and they pride themselves on helping their clients “Live Extraordinary.” Specializing in new custom homes starting in the mid $700s (land is additional) and high-end remodels, Solid Rock is dedicated to building projects that reflect the unique personalities and lifestyles of their clients, while demonstrating a commitment to unsurpassed quality, attention to detail,
The Solid Rock team
and attentiveness to their clients’ needs. Their homes are completely custom: from design, to selections and floorplans. Working with an educated design team, selections are made at local design centers and other retailers, not based on a list of standard features and selections. Another benefit to building a custom home, is being able to choose where you want your dream home to be located. Solid Rock Custom Homes builds in El Paso, Teller, and Douglas Counties, and can help you find a lot, or build on one you already own. Their clients are encouraged to create the most unique, one-of-a-kind luxury custom home, exactly as they desire it to be. That is the Solid Rock Custom Home difference. “I believe what sets us apart from other builders is our company’s culture, as well as our building process,” says founder of Solid Rock Custom Homes,
Lain Chappell. “The Solid Rock staff and trade contractors truly respect and care about each other, regarding one another as family.” Their building process is orchestrated in a way that allows a client’s vision and insight to be carried into the design and build of their home. Every client meets with Lain Chappell and the Solid Rock team from the start, and has thorough communication with them throughout the project. Clients are involved throughout the process, as much or as little as they desire. Whatever route the client chooses to take, the Solid Rock Design team aids them in every step of the selection process, making it an enjoyable experience. A graduate of UCCS, Lain Chappell followed his passion for construction, and became a Certified Graduate Remodeler of the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders), a
Graduate Master Builder of the NAHB, and he holds a General Contractor’s License with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. Setting down roots in Colorado Springs, Lain and his wife Barbara (also from Colorado Springs) established Solid Rock Custom Homes. Together, the Chappells are proud to live and work in Colorado Springs and to give back to the community they call home. As part of their dedication to the community, they support the HBA and HBA Cares, Careers in Construction,
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Habitat for Humanity, The Pikes Peak United Way and the Springs Rescue Mission. Lain and Barbara have built an awardwinning team, which has been selected for the Better Business Bureau’s Ethics and Excellence in Customer Service Awards, the Houzz Customer Service Awards (for seven years running), and The Gazette’s Best Workplaces and Best of the Springs awards. Join Solid Rock Custom Homes at the Parade of Homes August 3-19 to view the innovative Rustic Industrial Modern home, Bella Découvre, and to meet the Solid Rock team to discuss how they can help you Live Extraordinary. To learn more about their team, visit www.solidrockcustomhomes.com/meetthe-team. As a company whose foundation was built on referrals and continuing relationships, Solid Rock knows their success depends on customer satisfaction. By selecting Solid Rock Custom Homes, you will get an extraordinary home in an extraordinary way. To learn more about Solid Rock Custom Homes call 719-494-0932 or visit www.SolidRockCustomHomes.

STYLE AT HOME:
How to make downsizing a smaller task BY MARY CAROL GARRITY, TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE
If there is anyone who can share some wisdom on the art of downsizing, it’s my friend Marsee. In the 41 years she and Mike have been married, they have moved a whopping 18 times. A
few years ago, they decided it was time to downsize. So they sold their lovely 100-year-old Tudor home (featured in my book “Rooms We Love”) and bought a townhome just off of Kansas City’s
historic Country Club Plaza. Marsee is thrilled with so many facets of their smaller home. With no yard to care for and a lot less house to keep up with, they have more time to
explore all the city has to offer, from art exhibits to entertainment. Their neighborhood is in the center of it all, and they can walk to shopping, the gym, the library and area parks.
While the outcome is usually satisfying, the process of downsizing can be painful. I asked Marsee to share some of her secrets. Here’s her advice: CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT When you have a lot less space to live in, you have to make some tough decisions about what will follow you to your new home. Marsee didn’t want the rooms in her new home to be packed full, so she made some tough choices early on, determined to only keep the furniture, artwork and accents she absolutely could not live without. GIVE EXTRA TREASURES TO THOSE YOU LOVE When Marsee and Mike started out as newlyweds, she remembers how
family members helped them outfit their first homes, giving them furniture and other pieces that had been passed down through the generations. She wanted to do the same for her son and daughter-in-law, and other family members. Once Todd and Brooke picked the family pieces they wanted for their own home, Marsee and Mike loaded them up in a 17-foot Penske truck they nicknamed Big Al and drove the furniture to Arizona. As Marsee shared the story of each piece, Brooke recorded it in a notebook. Now, Marsee
says, the couple can start creating their own stories with the heirlooms. RETHINK WHERE YOUR FURNISHINGS GO So often, we get in a rut with our decorating. For example, if a piece of art hung over your fireplace mantel for years, you can’t imagine it anywhere else. When she downsized, Marsee moved a lot of furnishing and accents to new places. The chairs and table that once filled her kitchen’s breakfast nook are now library furniture in their home office.

LIVE IN THE SPACE FOR A WHILE BEFORE YOU MAKE FINAL DECORATING DECISIONS When Marsee first moved into the townhome, she thought she wanted a keep her decor very edited. This would be a change for this talented decorator, who has taught me so much about designing layered displays. Interestingly enough, after she lived in the townhome for a few months, she missed many of her old treasures, and the feel of more complex tableaus on her tables. She pulled some of her favorites out of storage and bought
a few new pieces and got busy layering. DISCOVER HOW TO LIVE IN YOUR SMALLER SPACE Marsee and Mike love to entertain. But they were not going to be able to accommodate the same number of guests, in the same way, in their smaller townhome. So Marsee began to rethink how they entertained. Instead of having guests congregate in the kitchen or living room, Marsee decided to spread the party to the home’s third level office, coaxing guests up there by setting up food and drinks.

5 job search mistakes you need to stop making Make sure you’re not committing one of the cardinal sins of job search. BY JON SIMMONS, MONSTER CONTRIBUTOR You’ve been applying to what seems like all the right jobs, with all the right techniques, but you’re still unemployed. What gives? Well, there’s a good chance you’re making one of the most common job search mistakes. They’re the most common because they’re the easiest to make. But you don’t need to be one of the people making them, right? They’re easy to avoid — you just have to know what they are. We asked career experts to weigh in on the absolute worst moves they’ve ever seen job seekers make — so you can learn from their mistakes — and get your job search moving in the right direction.
Mistake #1:
You don’t know what you want Hopefully, you’ve at least narrowed your search down to a job title (or three — we actually recommend using multiple job titles when searching for postings online). But when it comes to your resume, cover letter or interview, are you able to articulate what types of responsibilities you’re hoping to have in a job? What about your ideal work environment? How about work schedule? These are all important aspects to consider before applying. “Get specific — what does an ideal job look like to you?” asks Lori Scherwin, founder of Strategize That, a New York
City-based career coaching company, “Envision it and write it down. Doing this can help spark new ideas about what you might want to do, and where to look for it.”
Come up with at least five responsibilities that align with your interests and experience, as well your ideal work schedule and work environment. Then, take that list and compare it with the jobs you’re applying to. Does this mean tossing aside opportunities that don’t exactly match your list? Of course not, but it does help you hone in on jobs you’d more likely be satisfied with, so you don’t waste time applying to positions that aren’t a great fit. Which leads us to...
Mistake #2:

You’re applying to jobs too indiscriminately Learn how to adapt your cover letter for each company, so hiring managers can see that you took the time to learn about their company and how you’d be a great fit. It increases your chances of landing phone interviews, which are helpful even if the opportunity doesn’t pan out. However, do not apply to more than one job at the same company. This sends a message to recruiters and hiring managers that you’re not sure what you want, and are desperate to land any job. “Recruiters might actually ‘blackball’ a job seeker who applies to every single job opening,” warns career coach Dawn Boyer of D. Boyer Consulting in Sandston, Virginia. “This smacks of desperation. Also, the job seeker has no idea that one recruiter may have to ‘process’ every single application in the system.” What should you do if you’re genuinely interested in applying to two jobs at the same company? It’s okay to mention that you noticed the other one in your cover letter, and believe you have the skills and experiences necessary for it — but make sure it takes up no more than a sentence of real estate.
Learn how to adapt your cover letter for each company, so hiring managers can see that you took the time to learn about their company and how you’d be a great fit.
cover letters that show the applicant has taken the time to research your company, and articulates how he or she will be an asset within that specific role. If you’re sending out the same, generic cover letter, you’re not doing that, and that might be why you aren’t getting interviews. Learn how to adapt your cover letter for each company, so hiring managers can see that you took the time to learn about their company and how you’d be a great fit. “Researching the company shows your ability to take action and initiative on your own, which is probably the number one thing we look for when choosing who to hire,” says Thomas Jepson, hiring manager with Contractor Quotes, home improvement firm. Similarly, you’ll want to research the company’s reputation as a great place to work before you apply. “By simply reading the company’s Twitter feed, checking for recent news articles, and Googling to learn what other people have to say about a company can save job seekers future stress and frustration,” says Ross Wehner, founder of WehnerEd, a career coaching business in Denver.
Mistake #4:
You didn’t follow up Even though unemployment is low, the job market is still saturated with applicants. That means you need to be persistent if you want to hear from the recruiter or hiring manager. “The odds of your application naturally rising to the top of the pile without any additional work on your part are slim,” says Zack Gallinger, president of recruiting company Talent Hero Media. What can you do to stand out? A week after you submit your resume, if you haven’t heard anything, send a follow up email reiterating your interest in the position. And if you’ve interviewed, always send a thank-you note. Recruiters say that they can’t stress how impactful a hand-written thank-you note is — and how few they receive.
Mistake #5:
Mistake #3:
You haven’t researched the company Put yourself in the recruiter’s shoes: you’re pressed for time, and need to make quick, but educated decisions about which candidates to call in for an interview. But all you’ve got are two pieces of paper — a resume and a cover letter. In addition to enthusiasm and professionalism, you’re also looking for
You only search when unemployed You already have a job, so why look for a new one? Because if you totally shut down your job search, you might miss an opportunity that’s even better. “So many opportunities pass you by when you are not actively looking, meaning you can miss the perfect position,” says Gary Romano, president of human resource consultancy firm Civitas Strategies. ■

Fort Carson Seeking Interest in Establishing a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) The Department of the Army is seeking input from interested parties regarding the establishment of a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) whose purpose is to provide advice and feedback to the Army concerning its Installation Restoration Program (IRP) at Fort Carson. The IRP provides a structured but flexible approach for identifying, evaluating, and cleaning up sites for which the Army is responsible where hazardous substances have been released to the environment. Goals for cleanup are determined on a site-by-site basis. A Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) is a forum comprised of representatives from the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), state and local governments, tribal governments, and the affected community. RAB members provide their advice to the DoD concerning environmental restoration at military installations. The RAB provides stakeholders the opportunity to participate in the restoration process, monitor restoration progress, and make community views known to the decision makers. The purpose of the RAB is to promote community involvement by giving the public the opportunity to regularly review progress and participate in dialogue with the decision-makers of the Fort Carson environmental restoration process. If the RAB is established, the Army will not provide financial support to the public members for their services nor will members be compensated for work hours lost or time invested. Local community members interested in creating a RAB should be willing to establish and jointly chair the RAB and attend all RAB meetings (which could last between two to four hours each) and be willing to devote ample time to review Fort Carson environmental restoration documents within prescribed time frames. For more information or to express your interest in participating in a RAB, please contact the Fort Carson IRP Program Coordinator at 719-526-1682 between June 8 and July 8, 2018. If enough interest is generated, Fort Carson will form a RAB and provide information on membership and responsibilities. Published in the CS Gazette June 8, 9, 10, 2018
