the most lavish community in the region with a resort-style athletic club and spa and an 18-hole golf course. Buyers at Promontory at Northgate may choose from a townhome or patio home. All properties have full maintenance for the front yard, rear yard and common areas included in the HOA. It is rare to find full landscaping and maintenance included with patio homes, and with HOAs at $120 a month versus the usual $250 or so for similar properties, the value can’t be beat. ERA Shields hosts art show to raise money for MDA NEWSWIRE ERA Shields Real Estate hosted the 10th Annual Expressions of Hope Art Show on Friday, September 23, 2016 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in the Julie Penrose Hall. The funds raised benefit MDA Summer Camp so local kids with life-threatening diseases can enjoy a week where anything is possible at Rocky Mountain Village in Empire, CO. This year’s art show generated $24,000 which will send 30 local kids to MDA Summer Camp. More than 250 guests, including key figures in the Colorado Springs Real Estate community and several local families living with muscle disease attended. Guests enjoyed a night complete with beer and wine, a silent and live auction, local art, live art demonstrations as well as passed hors d’oeuvres. Notable guests include MDA Colorado Springs Goodwill Ambassadors, Kalvin Blauert and Cory Jacobson as well as other local families living with muscular dystrophy and related diseases. During the live auction Blauert and Jacobson shared the joy and freedom summer camp brought to their life. Guests return each year to see the artists showcased at the event and purchase pieces to benefit MDA. Eleven local artists attended including Mark Wong, Laura McCracken, Laura Reilly, Lisa Akens, John Mendoza, Alex Palacio, Terri Sanchez, Eric Fetsch, Simone Farley, Daniel Lindvig and Peter Olson. All of the artists donate a percentage of sales back to MDA. Artists John Mendoza, Eric Fetsch, Laura Reilly
and Mark Wong worked with local MDA Summer Campers to create special pieces for the event that were sold during the silent and live auction. The highlight of the night was when MDA Colorado Springs Ambassador Blauert did a live painting performance with artist Eric Fetsch. They created a watercolor painting that sold in the live auction for $1,300. ERA Shields is proud to host this event and their dedication and passion for giving back to the muscle disease community comes from top down with President Bill Hurt, his wife Carol, and GM and Vice President Cathi Sullivan. Under their strategic and generous leadership, ERA Shields continues to be one of the top fundraising companies for MDA in the United States. Sullivan mentioned that “every year our agents, staff and clients look forward to making this event a huge success in order to send kids to camp. We have seen what a wonderful environment camp is for them and we are honored to support this cause.” Since 2007 the Expressions of Hope Art Show has raised more than $264,000 to help accelerate progress for individuals whose abilities to move are compromised by neuromuscular disease — including everyday abilities like walking, running, hugging, talking and even breathing. The local MDA office serves over 2,300 clients and families, with approximately 400 in the Southern Colorado region. This year’s event could not be

Rancher w/Fin. Walk-Out Basement On 5 Acre Horse Property! As a contractor and real estate expert, I am often asked by homeowners for advice on the best projects for their remodeling dollars. While it’s important to first consider the purpose of the remodel (is it for yourself, for resale or as part of an income-generating suite?), there are some remodels that have proven to be reliable investments over time. Some of these include: KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS Remodels here top the list. High-end finishes, like marble and quartz countertops and stainless steel or commercial grade appliances, are greatly coveted. Clever storage is desirable, along with home automation; a new and growing trend. BATHROOMS This one is simple. The hottest bathrooms right now aim to replicate a spa-like experience. From color and accessories to scents and lighting, transforming this room into a relaxation haven will maximize its appeal. BASEMENTS Basement remodels are among the best ways to gain space without going the route of a costly addition, but the key is doing it right. Address moisture issues first, and hire professionals for plumbing, electrical and mechanical work. Insulate with a water-repellant insulation made from inorganic materials to improve energy efficiency, and then focus on the finishes.
INSULATION Installing, topping up or replacing insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to increase energy efficiency and save money over the life of your home. For exterior walls, basements headers, cathedral ceilings and attics, I recommend a product called Roxul Comfortbatt stone wool insulation for exceptional thermal performance. For interior walls and between floors, I’m a big fan of Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound for its excellent sound dampening qualities. Both products are fire resistant up to 2,150°F, resistant to mold and mildew and Greenguard-certified to the highest level for air quality. SMALLER FIXES Know that you do not have to spend a lot of money to realize a good return. If you cannot afford a full-out kitchen or bathroom remodel, consider painting walls and cabinets, replacing outdated hardware or fixtures and installing new lighting for an impactful refresh. When it comes to living spaces, it’s amazing what a splash of color, some new flooring, carefully selected accessories and strategic lighting can do for the look and feel of a room. Save a little extra by doing it yourself. With a positive attitude and some elbow grease, you can make a big difference with projects that require low to moderate know-how.
