profitable mineral strikes in Colorado state history. Gold stock brokers and mine suppliers were able to build expensive, roomy and well-decorated Victorian homes with their earnings. Many of the charming homes are two or three stories with ornate accents, wooden verandas, and cut-glass and beveled glass windows. When the gold strike subsided, other architectural styles were introduced to the area, including Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes, western bungalows and ranch houses. Today, there is an eclectic and endearing blend of large, stately homes and smaller, main-level living homes that fit a range of lifestyles. The majority of homes have two to three bedrooms and bathrooms and one or two car garages. The neighborhood boundaries are Monument Valley Park on the west, Weber Street and parts of Wahsatch Avenue and its alley on the east, the old Rock Island Railroad bed on the north and Uintah Street on the south. The National Register Historic District spans approximately 44 blocks and 657 properties, with boundaries at Madison Street on the North, Uintah Street on the South, the alley between Nevada Avenue and Weber Street on the East and the properties fronting on Wood Avenue to the West. The average home price in this neighborhood is $190,000, but range between

$100,000 and $1.1 million. But before building an in-law suite in their home, homeowners might want to heed the following tips.

BE CERTAIN IT IS LEGAL Making changes to your home may require a permit, particularly if your in-law suite will be an entirely new addition to your property and not just a strict room remodel. Contact your local zoning board to ensure the project is within your rights as a homeowner.

CONSIDER THE HEALTH OF YOUR IN-LAWS WHEN MAKING PLANS Many in-law suites are occupied by aging relatives who might not be able to get up and down stairs as easily as they used to. That makes accessibility of the suite a top priority. Typically, it’s best to locate in-law suites on the first floor, so relatives won’t find it difficult to get in and out of the suite.

DON’T OVERLOOK PRIVACY Just because your parents or in-laws will be moving in doesn’t mean they don’t still value their privacy.
