Home for the Holidays COURTESY OF SOLID ROCK CUSTOM HOMES

The holiday season is upon us! At this time of year our hearts and minds turn toward those held near and dear to us. With excitement we plan dinner parties and look forward to the food and fun we will be sharing with those we love. In anticipation of out of town travelers we prepare our homes to welcome our guests and to make their stay comfortable. Visions of holiday decorations and sounds of cheer fill our heads. Then it happens. The realization sets in that our kitchen table will only accommodate a dinner party of four, our family room only seats five, and our out of town visitors will be sleeping on the couch. For many this scenario rings true. Now, imagine hosting the holidays in an energy efficient, custom home built by Solid Rock Custom Homes that is specifically designed to accommodate your lifestyle and entertaining needs. A grand door welcomes your guests into a beautiful foyer. Coats and purses are placed in the coat closet and friends and family proceed into the great room. High ceilings, expansive windows highlighting gorgeous views, elaborate woodwork, and beautiful light fixtures encompass the room. A crackling fireplace invites all to sit down, to feel its warmth, and to mingle awhile. Laughter escapes from the large kitchen as guests gather around the island to enjoy a drink with hors d’oeuvres. The smell of pies baking in the double ovens lingers through the air, as plates are topped with turkey and all the fixings, and people make their

way to ample seating around the dining tables. The dinner and time of fellowship is enjoyed by all. Visitors disperse to enjoy a round of cards at the game table, a game of pool, a movie in the theater room, or a conversation in the great room. Others sit outside around the fire pit sharing stories while enjoying a hot drink. And when the night dies down, and everyone says their goodbyes, you show your out of town guests to their comfy rooms and say goodnight. Exhaling a deep breath you make your way down the hallway and reminisce about the night’s activities. You can still hear the laughter and see everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves. Then laying your head upon your pillow you think to yourself how blessed you are to have such a beautiful home that others can enjoy, and how happy you are to be home for holidays. Okay, it’s time to stop imaging what your life would be like living in such a home. It’s time you start living in it! Our team at Solid Rock Custom Homes would enjoy the opportunity to sit down with you to discuss how we can design and build the ideal home for you. Or, if you love your home but it needs some remodeling to improve its functionality we can help you with that too. Please contact us at 719-494-0932 to schedule your free consultation, and check us out at SolidRockCustomHomes.com. Until we meet, our Solid Rock Team wishes you a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a joyous New Year! ■

The Murty Group’s multigenerational real estate

The Gazette · springshouses.com

Sunday, Nov 20, 2016

COURTESY OF THE MURTY GROUP OF PLATINUM GROUP, REALTORS

“Growing up in a real estate family means you get to see all the hard work, the effort, and dedication that goes into being a Realtor. Especially one as committed to client relationships as my dad,” Graham Murty, a new-to-the-industry broker, comments on the work ethic of his father and mentor, Dan Murty. Dan has more than 30 years of experience working in real estate, so it’s no surprise that Graham has a lot of background and insider knowledge in the industry. This is part of why he wanted to join his father in his real estate business. “Being able to see

the faces of your clients when they purchase their new home, or when they successfully sell one, that’s what makes all that back-end effort worth it. I really enjoy the opportunity to serve my friends and clients through one of the biggest decisions they’ll make in their lifetime.” Dan Murty is coming up on his 25-year anniversary of working real estate in Colorado Springs. His exemplary background and history gives his clients the assurance that their business is being handled by a true professional. When Graham joined the team in July 2016, he brought with

him a fresh perspective, new ideas, and a more tech-forward approach to “old school real estate.” Dan is proof that the tried-and-true methods of client relationship building continue to work, and Graham’s fresh eyes bring in another facet of how to communicate with their clients. This means more hands on-deck, more eyes on the ball, and a great team ethic. It also brings with it all the satisfaction that their clients have experienced in the past, now with less effort than ever. “A lot of people tend to forget, in the rush of e-mails and appointments, that our clients are the heart and soul of our business,” says Dan. “If I can’t connect with you on the basic human level, what’s the point to having me around? You’re more than just a client. When you work with The Murty Group, it’s like you are part of the family. We really want to take care of you the best we can, and that’s why our motto is ‘Real Estate at the Highest Level’.” The Platinum Group, Realtors has a similar philosophy. Since its inception more than a decade ago, the Platinum Group has striven to provide excellent service to their customers, and create an environment of cooperation in their brokers. “We’re all only human,” Dan comments lightly. “We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Bringing the best of the best together in one place means we all get to rely on each other’s strengths to really succeed.” When asked about what his favorite part of working on The Murty Group team, Graham was enthusiastic in his response. “Working with my dad and at Platinum has been great so far! There’s a wonderful office culture, and I have the benefit of an experienced mentor to turn to with questions. I had always known that my dad worked hard for his clients, so being able to join in that, and to help it continue into the future, is really important to me.” For more information about The Murty Group, Dan, or Graham, please contact their office at 719-536-4390 or visit them on the web at www. How to recognize water damage in a home

SH 3

Featured Houses Featured Open House R DE CT UNNTRA CO

METRO SERVICES

Homes are potentially susceptible to a host of problems. While unforeseen problems can prove costly, homeowners who keep attentive eyes on their homes can oftentimes discover small problems before they escalate. Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage.

STAINS

Many prospective home buyers have been disappointed by the sight of water stains during an open house or home inspection. Water stains tend to be on ceilings and/or walls. Stains on ceilings tend to be round, while wall stains are straight lines down the wall that may or may not have forced paint to peel. Water stains are not necessarily indicative of a major problem, but homeowners should have the stains examined by a professional while potential buyers should direct their home inspector’s attention to the stains.

DETERIORATING WOOD

Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems. The

wood might be deteriorating because water is infiltrating the wood during storms. Baseboards and molding that is dilapidated or beginning to deteriorate may also indicate water damage.

BUCKLED DRYWALL OR WOOD

Drywall or wood that is buckled or beginning to buckle is another potential indicator of water damage. Drywall buckles when it gets wet, and that is often a sign that there is a leak behind the drywall. Severely buckled drywall will feel as if it has ridges. Wood also buckles when it is exposed to excess moisture, and this can usually be felt when walking on the wood barefoot or in socks.

ODOR

Sometimes water damage is best detected by the smell test. Homeowners who notice the smell of mold or mildew in rooms that previously never emanated such odors might have homes that are in the early stages of water problems. The water damage might be behind the walls, where mold is beginning to form thanks to water damage. Older homes tend to be musty, but call in a professional if you notice that mustiness if more pungent than usual. ■

Your future could be written on the wind

This green energy field has record job openings in 2016 BY MACK GELBER  MONSTER.COM

Forget riding the wave of the latest hiring trends — you’re better off riding the wind. The wind power industry supported a record 88,000 jobs at the beginning of this year, which marked a 20 percent increase over wind-related jobs in 2015, according to a recent statement by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). The record number of jobs underscores a boom that’s been described by insiders as the “wind rush.” According to AWEA, 2015 saw the third-highest amount of electricity-generating wind technology in megawatts (8,598) installed in a single year as compared to competing industries, and it marks a 77 percent jump over 2014 for wind. Also, wind energy installed the most new power plants as compared to competing industries in 2015 with 41 percent of share in the energy industry; solar had 28.5 percent and natural gas had 28.1 percent. That high level of activity led to job growth across the board in wind energy, from the manufacturing level — up 10 percent — to wind turbine technicians — identified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the fastest-growing job in the

U.S. All told, these factors led to the creation of 38,000 new jobs last year. “Wind power benefits more American families than ever before,” Tom Kiernan, CEO of AWEA, said in the statement. “We’re helping young people in rural America find a job close to home. Others are getting a fresh chance to rebuild their careers by landing a job in the booming clean energy sector. With long-term, stable policy in place, and a broader range of customers now buying low-cost wind-generated electricity, our workforce can grow to 380,000 well-paying jobs by 2030.” Currently, employment in wind energy is most highly concentrated in Texas, which boasts over 24,000 professionals in the field. Oklahoma ranked second, with more than 7,000, followed by Iowa and Colorado (both over 6,000). Maine, a state with between 1,000 and 2,000 wind workers, saw the biggest gains in 2015 jumping 16 spots in the national ranking. ■ Like what you’ve read?
