ON THE HOUSE:

Ah, trends, how they come and go

BY ALAN J. HEAVENS TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY

Every time I plop down in the Morris chair near the fireplace in my living room, I think of the day, maybe 15 years ago, when I first learned that the space my parents once called the parlor was on its way out. At least, that’s what Gopal Ahluwalia, who was vice president of research of the National Association of Home Builders for 32 years, kept telling me. As I wrote in 2002, “The formal living room is becoming a thing of the past as new-home buyers, always seeking more living space, are sacrificing it for additional square footage in the kitchen and family room.” I’m looking at this on my iPad as I click on the gas fireplace in front of me in the living room because I think it would make things a bit homier. The eagerness to get rid of the living room was not shared by all markets, especially in older areas of the country, where buyers are concerned about the effects such an absence would have on resale. In these areas, most new-home buyers prefer a living room and a family room of equal size. If the two can be seen from the kitchen table, the open floor plan is all the better. Living rooms come in handy at holiday time, when you put all the

relatives at the dining room table and move it around so it sits in both rooms, accommodating diners with expanding middles. Frankly, a house with 2,000 square feet and a rather open floor plan is about enough for me. As far as trends go, on one hand I hear that houses are getting smaller, but what I see in both city and suburbs is that they are getting larger. Who knows trends better than residential architects, whom homeowners actually hire to design houses with the latest bells and whistles? Outdoor living space, mud rooms and home offices top the list of special-function rooms in the American Institute of Architects’ Home Design Trends Survey of activity during the second quarter of 2016 that focused on emerging home features, systems and technologies. “Heavy investment in outdoor living spaces, mud rooms and home offices indicate that consumers are placing a premium on practicality and functionality,” said the institute’s chief economist, Kermit Baker. “Things have changed a lot from a decade ago, when home theaters and exercise rooms were some of the most popular special-function rooms in homes,” Baker said. I like the idea of mud rooms. When I come from the back garden, my shoes are muddy, and I come right into the kitchen. It has an easy-to-clean quarrytile floor, but still a mud room would be useful. Outdoor space would be okay, too. It has long been a feature of homes in warmer climates that get to use them year-round.

The home office has been an onagain, off-again feature over the last 20 years, but that’s where this column, and everything else I write, comes from. I saw my first home theater at a development in the mid-1990s and was amazed. It had a bar, a popcorn

machine and those comfortable theater seats. It also predated streaming video, tablets and iPhones. Therefore, it is now obsolete. The loss of the home exercise room, too, is understandable. And, from my own experience, it has nothing to do

with working out. We have a home exercise area in the basement for emergencies, such as snowstorms, but as I learned early on, working out regularly at the gym is two parts exercising and eight parts socializing. ■

How to make relocation go smoothly METRO SERVICES

People relocate for various reasons. Many relocate for professional opportunities, while others relocate to pursue their education. And while some may relocate to enjoy a lower cost of living, others may find themselves relocating to satisfy their sense of adventure. Regardless of why a person is relocating, doing so without preparing for the move can make the transition that much more difficult. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly 19 percent of the 35.9 million people who moved between 2012 and 2013 did so for a job-related reason. Relocating to a new city for a job is different than moving from one home to another within the

same community. Relocating to a new city can be a life-changing event that requires planning and maybe even a little luck to make it work. EXAMINE YOUR FINANCES Moving is expensive, and it can be even more expensive when moving to an entirely new city. If you are moving to pursue career opportunities but don’t yet have a job offer in hand, examine your finances and work out a worstcase scenario in the event that your job hunt takes longer than you hoped for. Unless you have a benefactor who can help you pay your bills and avoid debt while you look for a job, make sure you have several months’ worth of living

expenses saved up before moving. RESEARCH THE JOB MARKET Certain cities have more opportunities for people in certain fields than others, so make sure the city you plan to relocate to is a place where you will have ample opportunities in your chosen line of work. Otherwise you might find yourself settling for a career you don’t like or relocating again to a job market more accommodating to someone in your field. RESEARCH THE REAL ESTATE MARKET Before hitting the road and heading

for your new home, research the real estate market in that area. Try to find out the average rental price via online forums or even online newspaper classified sections. Find out if people tend to live with roommates or alone in the city you’re relocating to. If you are moving to a city where you know very few people or no one at all, consider becoming someone’s roommate. The right roommate can provide an instant social network and help you learn the ropes of your adopted home. If you plan to live alone and rent, recognize that many landlords will require a guarantor before renting to tenants with no income.

DON’T BE SHY Unless you are moving to a place where you already have a built-in social network, you should expect to encounter some loneliness upon arriving in your new location. Resolve to make the most of all your new home has to offer by joining a social organization, connecting with your university’s alumni group or volunteering with local charities. If you have a job lined up, sign up for company-sponsored outings or teams. Relocating to a new city can produce mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement. Planning ahead and doing some homework can help you as you transition to your new home. ■

Job Fair at The Gazette’s warehouse this Monday BY GINA CRONIN  GINA.CRONIN@GAZETTE.COM

Don’t miss The Gazette’s Job Fair taking place Monday Dec. 5 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at The Gazette’s Warehouse, 3113 North Stone Avenue, Suite C. The fair is the perfect opportunity to meet directly with The Gazette’s circulation operations management team, who will be recruiting newspaper carriers to be the news distribution champions of this wonderful city! This opportunity is perfect for anyone looking for supplementary income. Whatever size route you take on, as an independent contractor it’s a wonderful chance to be your own boss. Current contractors include college students, military personnel, parents and many others looking to earn some extra cash from the comfort of their own vehicle. As a contractor, you are contracted to a specific area of town within a certain zip code — your route — and are given a route list of houses in the area that have subscriptions to The Gazette, Denver Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today. An average route is 150 papers on weekdays and 200 papers on Sundays, and each route takes about 2.5 hours to complete. The route starts at 2 a.m. when the stars are still shining bright, and deadline is 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends. Many people like to choose zip codes they live in or are familiar with — this

is likely an option for you — while others prefer to branch out and explore a whole different part of town. Compensation varies depending on the length, difficulty and number of papers on the route. Many enjoy this opportunity because it provides just enough flexibility to fit into their schedule, while being a consistent source of income — as newspapers go out 365 days a year. As an independent contractor, it’s like running your own business; carriers use their own vehicle and many keep track of expenses and mileage for tax purposes. It is also important for each carrier to train at least one other person — be it a friend, colleague or family member — who can run the route in the event that the carrier is away or unable to fulfill the route on a particular day. The fair will be an open format, where attendees are interviewed on the spot; and if they move forward can be scheduled onto a ride along with a staff member as soon as the following day, in order to see firsthand what the route is like. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation to be contract. Carriers are perhaps the most important link in the news chain, bringing the latest in politics, economics, sports and entertainment directly to residents of Colorado Springs! ■
