Three problems that must be solved to close your sales deal

You’re sitting in the sales meeting trying to determine if a deal is going to close and your salesperson is all over the place. We’ve all been there. Salespeople can be the most verbose, circuitous, rambling people when it comes to understanding where a deal is and if it’s going to close. It’s maddening. Making matters worse, a reps inability to accurately detail where they are in the deal, what’s happening and what their deal strategy is leaves the sales manager in a lurch. It makes it near impossible to figure out if the deal is going to close. What a good deal strategy should look like and what needs to be done to close the deal. To avoid this problem and get clarity there are three types of problems sales people should be trying to identify and solve, and if they are unable to do so, you’re in trouble. The three types of problems are: THE BUSINESS PROBLEM If a sales person is going to have any chance of driving the sale and influencing the outcome, they MUST know what their buyers business problems are. Every buyer looking for a new product has business challenges or opportunities they believe a new solution

can effect. Too often, sales people are absolutely clueless to what those business problems are and how what they are selling can and will affect those business problems. When I talk about the business problem, I’m not talking about a technical problem, which I’ll address shortly, but a real business problems. Business problems can almost always be measured or are goal oriented. Revenue growth, reduction of capital expense, expanding markets, beating the competition, reduction of operating expense, increase in customers, lowering taxes, accelerating time to close, etc. Business problems are the business outcomes companies are investing in to grow the business. The motivation for the sale and the true sense of urgency to buy lies within the business problem. If you don’t understand the true business problem, you’ll never understand the motivation to buy. If you want to know if your sales people have a handle on the sale, ask them what the buyers business problems are. TECHNICAL PROBLEMS I consider technical problems; those operational problems your buyer could be experiencing that isn’t a business problem. Technical problems are the

problems inhibiting a company from achieving their business goals. Examples include; poor reporting, reliance on spreadsheets, lack of automation, no integration, lack of data, disparate systems, poor processes, etc. Technical problems are the problems companies face in trying to execute their strategy. Technical problems are also the problems that your product or service will be addressing, and this is why most sales people sell in this arena. Your average sales rep doesn’t understand the impact of the business problem and starts selling to a technical problem. I see it all the time. I will ask the rep, “What is the business problem?” Inevitably, they will say the customer can’t get the reporting they need. Or, it takes too long get their products to market, or they have disparate systems that don’t allow them to talk to and market to their customers. NO! NO! NO! All those answers are technical problems, which affect some business problem. Most sales people understand what their buyers technical problems are, it’s just in most cases they think they are business problems. SALES PROBLEMS Ahh, the good ol’ sales problems.

Sales problems are the things that affect the sale that aren’t technical or business related. Sales problems are your problems; the problem of the sales person. They are the things in the sales process that can prevent you from closing the deal. They include lack of access to the right decision makers, not having all the features the buyer is looking for, being more expensive, handling a detractor, competition, etc. Sales problems are the challenges and issues all salespeople face when trying to get a deal done. Sales issues do not relate to the customers’ business goals or operational challenges but can and will undermine a sale if not adequately addressed. If you want to win in sales, if you want to preside over a killer sales organization get good at understanding, ferreting out and solving all three of these problems in the sales process. Missing one can be the difference between making quota or not. It’s almost impossible to win a deal when a salesperson doesn’t know and can solve all three problems. If you know what the technical problems are, but you are unfamiliar with what business problems they solve, you are only half in control of the sale. If you know the

business problems, but don’t understand the technical or operational problems, again, you are only half in control. If you know the technical and business problems, but screw up the sales problems, then you’re gonna lose the sale. Selling is a holistic endeavor and understanding what the entire pie looks like is critical. YOU WANT GET GOOD AT THIS? In every opportunity in the CRM, create a place to input the business problem(s) the buyer is facing. Then input the technical/operational problem(s) that’s preventing them from attaining their business problem. Then input what the sales problems are. Get good at this part, and every other part of selling will be a breeze. I can tell you if my experience with salespeople and sales organization’s command of these three problems is any indication, you’re in deep trouble. Few salespeople have a firm grip on what problems they’re facing and even fewer have a grip on which type of problem they’re dealing with. Go find the problems, know the problems and sort the problems. Problems are a sales person’s best friend. 
