6 things you should be asking your pharmacist … but aren’t StatePoint

An estimated 4.5 billion prescriptions will be filled this year in the United States, with about half of consumers taking at least one prescription medication over the past 30 days. “You’d think we would be better at communicating with our pharmacists — just as we do with our other health care providers, like doctors, nurses and dentists,” says Susan Peppers, R.Ph., vice president of Pharmacy Practice at Express Scripts Pharmacy. “Unfortunately, it’s just not the case.” In fact, a JD Power study shows that only 10% of people talk to a pharmacist when ordering or receiving their medications. Pharmacists at Express Scripts Pharmacy were asked what are the top six questions patients should be asking their pharmacists, but don’t. Their answers offer insights into why we should take the time to ask these

questions and why pharmacists play an important role in our health care. Could this medication interact with my vitamins and supplements? Non-prescription medications and supplements can interfere with your prescription or cause unnecessary side effects. Talk to a pharmacist about all the medications you take, especially when you are prescribed any new medication. I am taking multiple meds. What do I need to know? If you are on multiple medications for one or more chronic conditions you should speak with a pharmacist any time there is a change to your medication regimen to check for potential drug-drug interactions, medication overlap or gaps in care. What should I do if I forget to take my medication? Always consult with your prescriber on what to do if this happens. Having access to your pharmacist 24/7 is

particularly important when you forget to take a dosage at the scheduled time. He or she can help you get back on track so that you get the full benefits of your medication. Having access to your pharmacist from the privacy of your home is another great reason to look for this 24/7 convenience. Could this prescription make me unsteady on my feet? Some medications can make you dizzy or drowsy and there are other hazards in the home that can cause a fall, especially as one ages and needs to get up frequently during the night. A pharmacist can provide home safety tips to avoid an accident. I sometimes forget to take my meds. What is a reminder that works? Taking medications regularly can help avoid complications. When having trouble remembering to take your medications, turn to pharmacists,

who can suggest tech solutions that will work for you, such as reminder apps. They can also help you manage side effects you may be having and identify alternatives that you can discuss with your prescriber, when needed. Is there a more affordable option for my prescription? If you are having trouble affording your medication, your pharmacist can help with more affordable options and recommendations, such as generics or less expensive formulary options. For more tips and resources, visit www.esrx.com/askyourpharmacist/. “When it comes to wholeperson care, pharmacists play a major role in the equation,” says Peppers. “Communicating with your pharmacist regularly can help reduce the chance of complications related to your medications. 

Reverse mortgages a viable option for some SPONSORED FEATURE

Reverse Mortgages allow qualified homeowners to convert their home equity into cash without selling their home or taking out a home equity loan. Historically, they have allowed people to cover a wide variety of living expenses without tapping into retirement or savings accounts. “To qualify, an individual must be at least 62 years of age, own a house, condo or townhouse free and clear, or have at least 50% equity in their home,” explains Josh Stensrud, senior vice president of Legacy Bank. “The equity is based on current market value of the property.” Homeowners are lent a portion to their equity in the home. These funds are not taxable and interest accrues on the funds advanced. No monthly payment is due from the homeowner. “There are fees involved, including a lump sum for mortgage

insurance, loan origination and servicing fees, such as appraisal, title search and insurance, inspections and recording fees, for example,” notes Stensrud. “Borrowers may finance these costs into the loan when sufficient equity is available.” Payment of property taxes, maintenance and property insurance are required of homeowners with a Reverse Mortgage. Any existing traditional mortgage and/or Home Equity Loan already in place must be paid. At least one of the borrowers must occupy the home as their primary residence. Married couples both holding title to the residence can be classified as borrowers. Should one spouse die, the survivor can continue to have access to proceeds and maintain residency. If only one spouse holds title to the home, both must consent to the loan. A surviving spouse wanting to

keep the home will have to repay the loan through other means. Legacy Bank is an equal housing opportunity lender. 

The music of OASIS calms minds, joining melodies and memories By Nina Glaser, The Gazette

OASIS, a Colorado Springs guitar and percussion-based vocal group, provides musical enrichment for residents of independent and assisted living communities, and skilled nursing, rehabilitation and memory care facilities. The 13-member band, together for 14 years, play a mixture of nostalgic, popular and sacred musical selections from the 1930s through the 1970s. “Our group finds it so rewarding to be part of a dynamic music ministry that has such a positive impact on the lives of the people in the community that we play for,” said Oasis band founder Steven Powell. “There’s absolutely no

question about it: Music makes a difference to our audiences; you can see it on their faces and in their body language as they clap and tap with the tune and join in singing and even dancing sometimes.” Music is often a lifeline for seniors, reaching even those who are quiet, reserved and/or withdrawn to provide a much-needed lift of their spirits. The band has seen — firsthand — how music engages hearts and minds, transporting older audience members to happier times in their lives. For an hour or two, they can be swept away by a flood of joyful memories. The bottom line: Oasis provides musical refreshment for the soul. 

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”

MAKING IT COUNT:

Five tips for choosing a medicare plan SPONSORED FEATURE

With open enrollment season here, it is a great time to evaluate your Medicare options and give careful consideration to what is important to you in a Medicare plan. Here are five tips to help make the process easier and ensure you are choosing the right option for you:

1. UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Take the time to explore your options and understand the benefits and costs of each plan. Learn about what Original Medicare covers versus Medicare Advantage. If you need a review, visit MedicareMadeClear.com. Pay attention to more than just the monthly premium. You also should understand the out-ofpocket costs — deductible, copays and coinsurance — you may be responsible for. Also, consider any changes to your health over the past year or whether you anticipate major health needs, such as surgery, in 2022. This will help you determine if your current coverage still fits your needs.

2. CHECK YOUR PRESCRIPTION BENEFITS Even if you expect to keep your plan, it is important to make sure it still covers your drugs in 2022. Remember that Original Medicare generally does not cover prescription drugs, so if you are

looking for help covering the costs of your prescription drugs, choose either a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage.

3. CHECK FOR MENTAL HEALTH COVERAGE

Managing your mental health is an important step in caring for your overall well-being. In addition to in-person care, you may now be able to access a large virtual health network of therapists and psychiatrists with many plans — including UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage for a $0 copay.

4. LOOK INTO WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Ask about programs that reward you for a healthier lifestyle. Some plans offer incentives for members who complete certain health-related activities, and many Medicare Advantage plans also offer gym membership and other wellness benefits at no additional cost.

5. DON’T FORGET ABOUT SPECIALTY BENEFITS

You may be surprised that Original Medicare does not cover most dental, vision and hearing services, but many Medicare Advantage plans do. For more helpful articles and videos about open enrollment and health care plans, visit UHCMedicareHealthPlans.com. 

Navigating your health over 65 StatePoint

Taking care of your health, especially over age 65, requires an understanding of your personal needs. Proper medical care is not one-sizefits-all, so finding the right services and providers may take some research and thoughtful consideration as it relates to your unique circumstances. Consider these tips from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to find the right care for you: Stay on top of your health. An important part of managing your health is being aware of any current medical concerns or those that might affect you in the near future. That is why it is important to stay on top of your health care needs — like preventive services that could help identify any issues early. Arming yourself

with knowledge can help you be better prepared to make decisions about the type of doctors or health care providers you need and how they work with your health insurance. Shop around. Choosing a health care provider can be time consuming and confusing. Medicare.gov makes it easy to find and compare providers like hospitals, home health agencies, doctors, nursing homes and other health care services in your area that accept Medicare. On your laptop, tablet or mobile device, enter your location to search for local health care providers and services. A clean and uniform design makes it easy to review and compare providers. Health over 65 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 when searching for care for yourself or a loved one. Search filters allow you to personalize your search based on what is most important to you, like services offered, quality ratings, inspection reports and doctor affiliations. Other features include suggested next steps and checklists to help choose the best provider for you. Knowing what providers accept Medicare can also give you peace of mind. Plan ahead. Do not put off researching your health care provider options. When you are feeling well is typically the best time to consider your health care needs. With a clear mind, you will be able to thoroughly explore pros and cons about providers and facilities and get the information you need to find the best fit for you, such as practice

locations, specialties, contact information and more. You can also save your favorite health care providers to refer to later when you are logged into your online Medicare account. Make your wishes known. Whether you are planning ahead for yourself or finding care for a loved one, it is important to share your preferences with others who are part of your care team. This might include sharing which doctors you like, what hospital you prefer or selecting a nursing home close to family and friends. Planning for medical care can seem like a challenge. By keeping tabs on your health and using available tools to research your options and compare providers, like the resources at Medicare.gov, you can create a plan that best fits your needs. 

A fall can result in unwanted outcomes, including injury, loss of independence and a decreased ability to do the things that are most important to you or a loved one. Each year, three million older adults are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Even

falls that do not lead to injury can provoke a fear of falling that causes you to avoid the activities that keep you healthy, strong and, ultimately, less likely to fall. While falls are dangerous, the good news is that experts say they are largely preventable. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

Fall prevention CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 “While many factors can contribute to our chances of falling as we get older, falling is not a normal part of aging,” says physical therapist and American Physical Therapy Association spokesperson Greg Hartley, PT, DPT. “Working with a physical therapist can empower you or a loved one to regain balance and strength.” The American Physical Therapy Association offers the following tips to help you reduce your risk of falling:

1. GET MOVING

For older adults, physical activity reduces the risk of falling and fall-related injuries. Stay active to maintain the strength, flexibility, coordination and balance needed to prevent falls. From swimming to yoga and walking, take part in a variety of

physical activities that you enjoy. Talk to your physical therapist to determine which activities are safe for you.

2. KNOW YOUR RISKS

A physical therapist can help you assess your risk factors and develop a plan to address them so you can remain independent. Tell your doctor or physical therapist if you have any dizziness, loss of balance or trouble seeing. Be sure to tell them whether you fell in the last year.

3. CHECK YOUR MEDICATIONS

Many drugs can cause dizziness, loss of balance, blurry vision and more. If you have any of these symptoms, review your medications with your pharmacist or doctor. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

4. ASSESS YOUR HOME’S SAFETY

Assess your home to fix or remove anything that could cause trips or slips, such as throw rugs, clutter, poor lighting and wobbly furniture or handrails. It is also a good idea to install a secure grab bar in the shower and next to the toilet for sturdy support on slippery floors. If you cannot make these safety improvements yourself, ask a friend or family member to help. Check with your doctor, physical therapist or area agency on aging for local programs that offer home safety assessments.

5. WORK WITH A PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Physical therapy (with exercise) focused on balance, stability and the ability to perform common tasks is recommended and can prevent falls, according to the

14 | SENIOR LIFE 2021

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Physical therapists are able to help you avoid a fall in the first place, as they are movement experts who can work with you to assess your fall risk factors and develop a plan to address them. They will advise you on making your home safer, educate you about medical risk factors linked to falls and design a safe balance training program specific to you. To learn more about the handson care, patient education and prescribed movement that a physical therapist can provide, visit choosept.com, where you can contact a physical therapist directly for an evaluation. Here at Amada Colorado Springs, it is our goal to meet

all of a family’s senior care needs and to exceed their expectations of what care can be. If we have been brought in to provide in-home care for a senior, we go beyond assisting them with activities of daily living like cooking and housekeeping to enrich our client’s life in the most meaningful ways we can. This could mean discussing a favorite scripture with Aunt May, or baking Dad’s favorite cookies, or even helping Grandma keep her prized flower garden tidy. By adding these personal touches to the care we provide, we are able to show our senior clients that they are truly valued as we vastly improve the quality of their lives.

When home is no longer the ideal environment for a senior, we will guide that senior and his or her family to the assisted living environment that ideally suits their unique needs and preferences. We will even continue to check in on clients who have moved to senior housing communities, just to make sure we haven’t missed an opportunity to be of service to them. We invite you to contact us at Amada Senior Care Colorado Springs to learn more about how we can help a senior in your life age with dignity and give your family the peace of mind they deserve. How active seniors can protect their vision Metro Services

Retirement may be seen as a time to slow down and enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation, but today’s seniors clearly did not get the memo. Modern seniors look and act a lot different than traditional depictions of retirees. The shift in attitudes regarding aging is noticeable in the growth of active retirement communities, which are designed for aging men and women who want to engage in activities where no chairs are required. Active seniors may not fit outdated stereotypes of cardiganclad grandparents shuffling about dusty retirement homes, but even the most energetic retirees may still be vulnerable to agerelated health complications. For example, the American Optometric Association (AOA) notes that men and women over the age of 60

may be vulnerable to age-related vision problems. A certain degree of vision loss is natural as men and women age, but that does not mean active seniors have to sit idly by. In fact, there are many ways for active seniors to protect their vision so they can continue to get up and go without having to worry about losing their eyesight.

MAKE YOUR DIET WORK FOR YOU

The AOA notes that a number of eye diseases can develop after an individual turns 60, and some of these conditions can be minimized with wise lifestyle choices. For example, a healthy, nutrient-rich diet can protect vision over the long haul. The National Council On Aging (NCOA) notes that studies have found that omega-3 fatty

acids, which can be found in foods like spinach, kale and salmon, can reduce individuals’ risk for agerelated eye diseases. Seniors can speak with their physicians about other ways to utilize diet to combat age-related vision problems.

PROTECT YOUR EYES AND LOOK COOL AT THE SAME TIME

Active seniors spend lots of time outdoors, and that may have an adverse effect on their vision. The NCOA notes that lengthy exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause both short- and long-term eye damage. Thankfully, such issues are easily avoided if seniors wear sunglasses with UV protection when going outside. Brimmed hats also can protect the eyes from harmful UV rays.

BE MINDFUL OF SCREEN TIME

Much has been made of how much screen time is healthy for young people. But seniors also are not immune to the potentially harmful effects of spending too much time staring at their phones and other devices. The NCOA recommends seniors employ the 20-20-20 rule in regard to screen usage. Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This quick exercise can help to reduce eye strain. An active lifestyle benefits seniors in myriad ways. Seniors should take steps to protect their vision so they can continue to get up and go for a long time after they retire. 

MAKO robotics assisted total joint replacements SPONSORED FEATURE

No surgical procedure is a onesize-fits-all venture. Dependent upon a patient’s natural bone anatomy, the current state of any preexisting injuries, and the severity of the specific injury or condition in which they are looking to treat, surgeons must take these factors into consideration and individualize every single procedure they perform. With this, many surgeons are looking to continuously advance intraoperative technologies and improve procedure accuracy in efforts to improve patient outcomes overall. Thus sparked the development of robotic assisted total joint replacements. The first intra-operative robotic assisted navigational system was developed by a company called MAKO Surgical Corp. in the fall of 2010. They were eventually absorbed by another medical device company, Stryker

Orthopedics, which has since renamed the system Mako Smart Robotics and has advanced this technology to include capabilities for total knee replacements, partial knee replacements and total hip replacements. How Mako SmartRobotics works After thorough evaluation by an Orthopedic specialist, a CT scan will be ordered to take images of the arthritic knee or hip. After reviewing the imaging, your specialist will use the CT scan to create a personalized 3D model of the joint replacement to fit within a one-millimeter variance on top of your joint, creating a seamlessly perfect fit. Once in the operating room, your surgeon will then take the customized joint replacement and, with the help of Mako’s precision guided technology, secure

the replacement. This precision guidance technology is referred to as Mako’s AccuStop technology, which helps the surgeon stay within the operative boundaries as defined in the modeled preoperative plan. The robot itself is non-operative without the surgeon to guide it. Total Joint Replacement procedures are intended for those who suffer from degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis, posttraumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis and hip dysplasia. Dependent upon the severity of your condition, your doctor may recommend a specific robotic assistant joint replacement procedure. Robotic Assisted Total Joint Replacements are leading the charge in minimally invasive joint replacement procedures and have a 96.1% overall patient satisfaction

rate (Stryker Orthopedics). We at Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group are pleased to announce our latest addition: Mako Robotic Assisted total joint replacements, offered as both in-patient and out-patient procedures at The Orthopedic and Spine Center of Southern Colorado, our in-house surgery center. To learn more visit www.CSOG. net. To schedule a consultation, call 719-632-7669 and ask for the Joint Replacement Center. 

How to help seniors adapt to automotive tech Metro Services

Modern automobiles are more technologically advanced than ever before. That tech is not just making driving more comfortable and convenient, but also safer. In a recent analysis of motor vehicle accidents, researchers at the International Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that vehicles with blind spot and lane departure warning systems were involved in 11% fewer sideswipes and head-on crashes than cars that did not feature such systems. In addition, the IIHS estimates that the number of automobile crashes in the United States could be decreased by 85,000 each year if every vehicle were outfitted with a lane departure warning system. Driver assistance systems have made driving safer for millions of people across the globe, but one demographic may need some extra help adapting to modern vehicles and may even need a little extra encouragement to utilize tech that can keep them safe behind the wheel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that in 2018 the United States was home to 45 million licensed drivers aged 65 and over. That marks a 60% increase since 2000. Though seniors’ perceived unwillingness or inability to utilize modern technology is often overstated, some aging drivers may need a little extra help as they try to learn how to use assistance technologies in their vehicles.

LEARN THE TECH YOURSELF

Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all

the safety features in the vehicle. Salesmen demonstrate these features every day, so it should not take long for them to show you the ropes.

BE PATIENT

Each person adapts to a new technology at his or her own pace. It is important to remain patient when teaching aging drivers how to use the tech in their vehicles. Old habits die hard, and while some drivers may quickly adapt to tech like backup cameras, others may not be so quick to abandon driving techniques they have been safely using for decades. Stay the course, remain patient and allow senior drivers to adapt at their own pace.

TEACH ONE TECH AT A TIME

It can be overwhelming for drivers of all ages to adapt overnight to all the tech in their new vehicles. When teaching senior drivers how to utilize various driver assistance technologies, take it one tech at a time. When coupled with your patience, this approach can help seniors avoid being overwhelmed and increases the likelihood that they will embrace the tech in their vehicles. Many senior drivers utilize driver assistance technologies every day. A patient and methodical approach to showing seniors how their vehicles can help them stay safe behind the wheel can be a road map to helping seniors adapt to life in modern vehicles. 

An alternative treatment for brain health. TMS is a non-medication treatment for depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

24 | SENIOR LIFE 2021

has been used by patients who suffer from medication-resistant depression with great success. TMS treats mental health conditions using waves of magnetic energy produced by an MRI coil. The magnetic energy travels from the coil to the brain, transiting the skull (hence the name transcranial). The regions of the brain treated and the pattern of magnetic energy pulses used (called a protocol) vary, based on the condition to be treated and evolving medical research. The use of TMS has been approved by the FDA since 2008. We offer free evaluations, three-minute treatments, free educational classes, acupuncture and biofeedback to support your recovery. Additionally, we accept Tricare, Medicare, V.A. and all commercial insurance. Many people wonder if TMS is the correct solution for them.
