SHUTTLE FROM THE BROADMOOR WORLD ARENA PROVIDED BY

The health care system can feel uncoordinated and costly. One in 10 U.S. adults ration medication because they cannot afford their prescriptions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, the more a patient must pay at the counter, the more likely they are to abandon their treatment. Other Americans simply lack convenient access to primary care providers and pharmacies, and go undertreated as a result.

Pharmacy services exist to fill these gaps in care. Because these companies sit in the middle of the health care delivery system, they have the unique ability to spot and solve problems across the supply chain to drive affordability and deliver improved clinical outcomes. Before filling your next prescription, check out these insights from Express Scripts:

• CHECK YOUR COVERAGE: At a time of rising drug costs and access barriers, some pharmacy services companies are helping people take their medications as prescribed.

• TOOLS TO STAY ADHERENT: Half of all treatments fail because people do not take medication as prescribed, and nearly one-quarter of hospitalizations are due to medication non-adherence, according to the American Hospital Association. Further, chronic conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease have been on the rise for more than two decades — today, 60% of U.S. adults have at least one chronic condition. One of the biggest — and costliest — challenges with managing the rise of chronic conditions is ensuring patients get on and stay on the medicines they need.

SMART CHOICES

• UNDERSTAND YOUR PHARMACY BENEFITS: Prescription drug coverage is the most frequently utilized benefit that employers and health plans offer. On average, a pharmacy benefit is used approximately 11 times a year. Unfortunately, pharmacy care benefits, like all healthcare benefits, can be confusing.

• PHARMACY ACCESS: Pharmacists often fill care gaps in their communities, particularly where there are

shortages of physicians, such as in rural areas. One in five Americans live in rural areas, yet less than 10% of physicians practice in these communities. This means longer wait times to get an appointment and more difficulty accessing pharmacies.

Ensuring equitable access to affordable, quality pharmacy care and health services will not only improve health, but it will also help individuals, families and communities thrive. 

Easy ideas to stretch your retirement budget

Retirement may mean you have unlimited time to enjoy each day, but it does not mean you have a budget to match.

You probably already know staying active is essential for aging with grace, so instead of letting limited funds keep you at home, explore some ways you can enjoy your leisure time without breaking the bank.

HIT THE GYM

Many fitness centers offer special rates and programs for older adults. Hitting the track or

joining a group fitness class are easy ways to socialize while getting some exercise. The discounted membership is also an investment since staying fit is important for physical and mental health.

ENJOY EARLY DINNER DEALS

You can still enjoy dining out occasionally, especially if you take advantage of lower-cost meals designed with older adults in mind. Many specials are for meals earlier in the day, which is consistent with a growing trend toward earlier dining. According

SMART CHOICES

to Yelp, the number of people eating from 4-6 p.m. has grown 9% (up to 26% from 17% in 2019). Eating earlier promotes better digestion, and earlier meals are often lighter portions for smaller appetites. For example, Cracker Barrel’s Early Dinner Deals feature smaller portions served from 4-6 p.m. on weekdays. Menu items include a variety of homestyle favorites like chicken ’n’ dumplins, meatloaf, catfish and more.

CHECK OUT THE LIBRARY

Your local library is filled with hours of free entertainment, but it is not just the kind you will find from getting a library card. You can undoubtedly find a book that covers any genre or interest you can name, but most local libraries also offer programming tailored to special interests, and the sessions are typically offered for free or at a low cost. It is an easy, affordable way to pick up a new skill, meet a favorite author, learn about a topic that intrigues you, and more. Other resources to explore include your library’s DVD collection and

internet access if you do not have a computer at home.

NURTURE A GARDEN

Tending a garden may seem like a seasonal activity, but you can make it a year-round hobby. Researching and planning is a good way to carry your gardening enthusiasm into the cooler months and you can start seedlings indoors to extend your growing season. While you are digging into

this low-cost pastime, remember the results of your efforts, such as fresh fruits and veggies, can help cut your grocery costs, too.

MIND YOUR MONEY WITH DIY

Saving money at the grocery store is just one way you can make DIY projects work for you. There are dozens of other examples of ways you can put your skills and interests to use by passing time doing something you enjoy while

benefiting your bank account. If you like to tinker with cars, figure out what repairs you can handle yourself and avoid hefty service fees. Crafting and sewing might mean you have ready-made gifts for special occasions and a way to repair or repurpose damaged clothing instead of discarding it.

ASK ABOUT DISCOUNTS

You may be surprised by how many places offer discounts for older adults that they do not readily advertise. In some cases you will find the information on their website or signage, but other times you may find it easier to just ask. When you are booking an appointment or checking out, inquire about discounts for older adults, including any restrictions, age requirements, the amount of the discount and other pertinent details. Sometimes the discounts are offered on certain days or for specific services, or they may require you to join a loyalty club. When dining out, many restaurants offer a variety of loyalty perks. 

An aging population embraces FITNESS

Data from the American reveals fitness programs for older adults are the third fastest-growing fitness trend this year. It is a smart move for businesses in the fitness space, considering the rapid shift in demographics. People over 60 are projected to make up nearly a quarter of the population by the year 2040.

A mix of aging baby boomers, advancements in medical technology, and an overall increase in life expectancy are the main drivers. With this aging

population comes a greater emphasis on health and wellness to enhance the quality of life and make those golden years as enjoyable as possible.

FITNESS PROGRAMS FOR THE AGING GROW

Gyms, fitness instructors, health coaches, and medical professionals are stepping up to the plate to promote healthy aging via regular fitness, both in person and online. These programs often focus on low-impact exercises, such as

swimming, resistance training, yoga, and walking, to help reduce the risk of injury while providing benefits like improved cardiovascular health and muscle strength.

Wearable technology is among the fitness industry’s top trends, specifically for weight loss and mental health. Smartwatches, fitness trackers, and other devices can monitor activity levels, motivate users to exercise, and track heart rates and overall health progression. This information can inform healthcare and personalize fitness goals.

Weight loss exercise programs can help with common conditions in seniors, such as joint pain from osteoarthritis, heart disease, and diabetes. Furthermore, exercise positively impacts mental health and can reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults.

AGING AND THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE

Aging elevates the risk of chronic illnesses, cognitive impairments, and falls due to changes in muscle strength, bone health, brain function, and other bodily functions. Regular aerobic and musclestrengthening exercises can prevent or manage disease impact, preserve independence, and enhance quality of life. Additionally, exercise can improve balance, flexibility and strength, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

In addition to physical health benefits, exercise can positively affect mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Plus, exercise in a social setting, such as a group fitness class or walking group, can combat loneliness and promote socialization for older adults, further enhancing mental health and boosting happiness.

Ultimately, there is no such thing as being too old to exercise. With proper knowledge and guidance, people of all ages can incorporate regular physical activity into daily life.

CHALLENGES FACED BY OLDER ADULTS IN FITNESS

Despite the benefits of regular exercise, some older adults may face challenges in participating in fitness activities. Physical limitations due to age or existing health conditions may make certain types of exercises difficult or even dangerous. There may also be financial barriers for some older adults living on a fixed income. Finding appropriate fitness programs catering to their needs and

SMART CHOICES

abilities can also be a challenge in certain locations, such as rural areas. Fitness professionals can incorporate modifications and adaptations that make exercises more accessible for older adults, like low-impact options or discounted rates for seniors. Additionally, the availability of online fitness programs can help bridge the gap for those living in rural or remote areas.

HOW OLDER FOLKS CAN BECOME MORE ACTIVE

Seniors should consult a doctor or physical therapist before starting new regimens. Experts can identify safe exercises while accommodating existing health conditions. They may also recommend local community programs or resources.

Many gyms and fitness centers offer discounts or affordable specialized classes for older adults.

Some insurance plans may also cover fitness programs or gym fees for older adults as part of their benefits. Those unable to join in-person fitness options can utilize online resources and apps designed for older adults looking to stay active.

A TREND THAT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW

Experts anticipate active lifestyles among older Americans

will grow in popularity as tailored, inclusive, and accessible offerings expand. Encouraging other healthy habits — better nutrition, sleep habits, and stress management — can further these efforts and lead to a more productive and fulfilling life. As one-fifth of the U.S. population enters their golden years, society must collectively prioritize the health and wellness of all age groups 

The role of a home health aide

Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but there are plenty of others who do their part to maintain the wellbeing of individuals, including home health aides.

Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, are brought in to assist a person with activities of daily life. An HHA typically helps a person who may need some assistance with tasks they cannot perform due to illness or disability. HHAs may work in a person’s home, group home or another care facility

AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location.

HHA s may perform various duties, such as:

• Assistance with personal care tasks like dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from bed to chair, etc.

• Checking a client’s vital signs.

• Monitoring a client.

• Light housekeeping.

• Meal planning and cooking.

• Picking up prescriptions.

• Companionship.

HHA s typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.

Individuals can find the services of HHA s who may work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital will have connections to HHA services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential s to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A HHA will be compassionate, patient and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, HHA s must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.

Home health aides serve vital roles in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

AMADA SENIOR CARE COLORADO SPRINGS:

Long-term care insurance policy expertise

SPONSORED FEATURE

Do you have long-term care insurance? Perhaps you were smart and bought your policy years ago, and it has brought you — and your family — peace of mind (and protected your assets).

As advertised, long-term care insurance is one of the best ways to financially prepare for the non-medical expenses not covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Long-term care insurance was designed to reimburse policyholders a daily benefit amount for services to assist them with the activities of daily living — things like bathing, dressing, meal preparation,

medication reminders, housekeeping, shopping, toileting and more. It seemed like a win-win for a time when you might be ill or have reached old age.

That was then; this is now.

Have you been notified that your premium is going to increase because of higher-than-expected aggregate policyholder claims costs? Have you found the options offered challenging, cumbersome and/or intimidating?

“Long-term care insurance companies are trying to frustrate their customers by raising rates and hoping they will reduce their benefits, or — worst-case scenario

— drop the policy altogether,” said Ken Jenson, owner of Amada Senior Care Colorado Springs.

“They never mention that using the policy and filing a claim will stop the premiums if they use the policy. Most folks do not understand how these policies work. That is why I am willing to visit them and educate the customers for free.”

Just as you may have sought help from a professional when considering long-term care insurance initially, you can count on an Amada Senior Care professional to help you get the most out of your policy benefits. As advocates for policyholders,

they can help you navigate the sometimes-complicated world of long-term care insurance in several ways, including:

• Helping you understand and verify benefits.

• Guiding you through a review and filing of claims.

• Identifying and analyzing the requirements of a policy.

• Billing long-term care insurance carriers directly at the request of policyholders.

Call Amada Senior Care Colorado Springs today at 719-377-9121, where you have a friend in the long-term care business. 

THE VILLAGE COOPERATIVE OF UTE VALLEY:

Hassle-free home ownership is now under construction

The Village Cooperative that is coming soon to Colorado Springs is designed to provide a maintenance-free home ownership option to active adults (55+) — working or retired — in an independent, pleasant and secure living environment. With over 60% of the homes already sold, construction has begun.

Owner-members can select from a variety of one bedroom, two bedroom and two bedroom with den homes with no steps within a three-story building built over secure underground parking. Those who reserve now will also be able to choose their home’s interior finishes. This community includes many amenities, including a club room, reading areas, community area with kitchen, hobby shop, guest suite, garden plots, while-you’re-away services and underground parking with a car wash bay — all wrapped up

in a fully secure building. The homes are equipped with all appliances, including a washer and dryer, in-home storage, walk-in closets and individually controlled heating and cooling.

Because of the building design, style of management, ownership structure and prevailing attitude of the members, this senior housing option provides a lifestyle that lives very different from a single-family house, townhouse, condominium, senior apartment or assisted living facility. The cooperative lifestyle gives each owner a standard of living, an involvement with others, and a degree of comfort and security not found in other types of housing — all for a fraction of the price of a patio- or ranch-style home.

In addition to a maintenancefree and worry-free lifestyle, owner-members in the

community also see a 3% equity appreciation for each year they live at the Village Cooperative. But probably the greatest difference between life in cooperative housing and living in other housing options is the pride of ownership and community. Their attitudes reflect

a sense of belonging and the underlying awareness of pleasant and secure living, reminiscent of the neighborhood where they lived and raised their families.

Focused on caring for seniors

PHPprime has more than 300 primary care physicians and advanced practice providers, primarily from independently owned practices, that are there to care for you. The network of primary care practices is centered on a shared mission: to deliver high-quality, coordinated care. By focusing on a team-based approach, PHPprime emphasizes personalized care that helps older adults manage their health and navigate the complexities of aging.

The center of attention: Senior health

Older adults often experience a range of complex health issues, from managing chronic conditions to coordinating care across multiple specialists. PHPprime is dedicated to meeting these needs through patient- and family-centered care. By adopting a team-based approach, which includes primary care providers, nurses, care coordinators and other health professionals, PHPprime ensures that each patient remains at the heart of every decision, promoting their overall health and independence.

One key component of PHPprime’s care strategy is encouraging older adults to schedule annual wellness visits with their primary care provider. These yearly assessments are vital for detecting potential health concerns early and managing chronic conditions proactively. By establishing regular communication, primary care providers can build stronger relationships with patients and tailor care to individual health goals and needs.

Convenient and accessible care

PHPprime understands that accessing health care can be challenging for older adults, which is why many of our practices provide same-day appointments and 24/7 access to care teams. To enhance convenience, many of our clinics are equipped with essential diagnostic services, including lab work, x-rays and ultrasounds. For patients who prefer remote care, PHPprime also offers telehealth visits, allowing them to receive medical attention from the comfort of their homes.

Beyond medical care, PHPprime takes a holistic approach by offering lifestyle support through health coaches, educational programs and connections to community services through a team of nurses and social workers. This comprehensive model is designed to enhance overall wellbeing and help older adults lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

PHPprime primary care practices are contracted with most major health insurance plans and accept Medicare Advantage.

Committed to coordinated, patient-centered

care

PHPprime is committed to delivering high-quality, coordinated care tailored to the needs of older adults. Through this commitment, PHPprime continues to play a pivotal role in helping older adults maintain their health and independence.
