The Quarterly Newsletter for The Society for Quality in Healthcare in Nigeria
Dear Reader, Welcome to “QQ”, our brand new platform for sharing information about the activities of the Society. “QQ” simply means Quality Quarterly and will offer amongst others, an opportunity to form a close bond between you as a member and the Society for Quality in Healthcare in Nigeria, while taking you through a journey of the “SQHN” activities. Over the years, we have sought ways of reaching out to our members, care givers and healthcare beneficiaries in general through the use of Seminars, Conferences and Workshops, which are designed to provide knowledge for safe practices and quality in Healthcare in Nigeria. I believe that “QQ” will present another positive step in that direction. This year, the Society experienced tremendous growth in all categories of membership - Students, Standard, Institutional and Corporate members, and we are hopeful for continued growth and active involvement of all members in 2012.

Over the years, it has been identified that a gap exists in the quality of care and services provided by both private and public healthcare practitioners in Nigeria. A few attempts have been made to address this quality gap nationally but not much progress has been made. In 1990, Late Professor Ransome-Kuti (then Minister of Health) set up a committee on Quality Assurance in the Private Health Sector. Since then, not much progress has been made to address the issue of quality in Nigeria. In 2003, a group of healthcare professionals came together to promote the idea of a non-government organization being registered to drive this initiative and take the discussion of quality in healthcare to a wider platform. By May 2006, The Society for Quality in Healthcare in Nigeria was incorporated as a not-for-profit charitable organization, which has multidisciplinary involvement. It is governed by a constitution, with a focus to bring about a wider understanding and acceptance of Quality in Healthcare towards improved patient outcomes and reduction in healthcare delivery costs. This will also be a platform to share best practice and successful strategies
