WELCOME
As I write this letter, the first performances of the inaugural season of ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage are about to happen. It’s hard to believe that just one year ago the Paramount Center was still under construction, and the formation of a new arts organization– one that brought the best in world theatre right here to Boston’s historic theatre district – was barely an idea. It’s a great privilege to be able to add to the cultural choices in the community by populating these four new and distinct venues with work from all over the world. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Emerson College for making this possible. I invite you to explore the rich array of works we’ve planned this season. Our opening selections - the playful, Sound of Music inspired Fraulein Maria and the world premiere of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later are followed by a wonderfully diverse group of projects from our two programming streams: LEGENDS: Established, highly regarded institutions and artists whose work is seen and celebrated around the world—and now in Boston PIONEERS: A new generation of acclaimed artists whose ideas are redefining the theatre and pointing to the future And, as is our policy, we always make sure that some of these works will engage the imaginations of the whole family—young and old alike. This winter/spring we have a distinctive Irish Festival, the first visit in 40 years from the legendary Peter Brook, F. Murray Abraham as Shylock, a celebrated piece from Robert Lepage (who is currently finishing his RING for the Metropolitan Opera), the amazing PSY from Montreal, a stage adaptation of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises by ERS, the Civilians investigating the development of Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, and much more including a stroll through Boston Garden unlike any you’ve experienced before. In addition to theatre, we are rapidly expanding our film and music offerings. Keep an eye on ArtsEmerson.org for announcements of classic films, mini festivals, first-peek screenings, and more plus live music acts for a diverse range of tastes. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure. I look forward to welcoming you to our theatres. Warm regards,
Rob Orchard, Executive Director p.s. If you are not yet a member, I encourage you to join and get first dibs on our “extras”—workshops, discussions, and special members-only events. (Our first members-only event—an invited dress rehearsal for The Sun Also Rises—was held at the Paramount in August, where members of Elevator Repair Service were in rehearsal prior to their premiere in Edinburgh. Don’t miss their return this spring—see pages 18-19.)

AFTERMATH NEW YORK THEATRE WORKSHOP
March 20, 2003. A date that the ordinary people of Iraq will never forget. A day that changed their lives forever. In June 2008, the award-winning creators of “The Exonerated” traveled to Jordan to find out firsthand what happened to the Iraqi civilians who fled in the wake of the Iraq War. Blank and Jensen interviewed some 35 people—a cross-section of lives interrupted—who fled the chaos and violence that befell Iraqi society for the relative safety of Jordan. Following the visit to Amman, these encounters were crafted into a jarring, illuminating and unforgettable play that gives voice to the upheaval of everyday life in a country struggling to find its way back home. Originally developed and produced by New York Theatre Workshop in 2009, with the support of Hopkins Center for the Arts, Dartmouth College. AFTERMATH was made possible by the generous support of The MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.

PETRUSHKA BASIL TWIST
Known the world over for his astonishingly innovative puppet shows, master puppeteer and Guggenheim Fellow Basil Twist spins new magic around the legendary Ballets Russes production. Set to Stravinsky’s classic score, Petrushka tells of a tragic love triangle between the clown Petrushka, the alluring Ballerina, and the dashing Moor, three magical creatures whose stories emerge amidst the swirl of the Russian carnival. The program opens with an abstract fantasia of puppetry set to Stravinsky’s Sonata for Two Pianos, performed by Russian identical twin pianists, Julia and Irina Elkina. Nine hidden puppeteers combine Czech and Japanese traditions in a tour de force of music, movement, design and storytelling. 7 PERFORMANCES ONLY

THE BATTLE OVER
ATLANTIC YARDS THE CIVILIANS
The Civilians presents the culmination of a long-term investigation of the controversial Atlantic Yards development project in Brooklyn and its effect on neighborhood and community. This lively presentation of theatre, dance and music draws inspiration from interviews with the real life players in the story of a divided borough: residents both old and new, community activists, developers and politicos. The Civilians will present this dramatic story using actual words from the interviews, showing many sides of this multifaceted issue and the process behind one of the largest urban developments in the country. Far from an indictment of the project, Atlantic Yards examines how the conflicts erupted, where the process went wrong, what is at the heart of urban communities, and what can be learned from the debates of the last seven years. 7 PERFORMANCES ONLY

MIND BLOWING CIRCUS
LES 7 DOIGTS DE LA MAIN
A merging of acrobatics of the body with acrobatics of the mind and soul, PSY explores the surreal underworld of the human psyche through the liberating language of circus arts. Sitting in the quiet of a psychiatrist’s office, the voices in a man’s head instruct him to climb on a trapeze and hang by his toes. An obsessive - compulsive patient crosses a busy intersection, his attempts to avoid contact leading him to perform acrobatics across a sea of pedestrians. Trapeze, juggling, aerial ropes, Chinese poles, and German wheels fill the stage, as The 7 Fingers brings out humor, beauty, and the commonality of everyday human limitations, celebrating the power of the individual and finding moments of strength, courage and joy while flying through the air. 8 PERFORMANCES ONLY

THE COLOR OF ROSE KATHRINE BATES
Now we get to hear from Rose. As the aged Rose Kennedy prepares herself for a pressing interview, she revisits her past through the eyes of her youth and middle-age. Young Rose Fitzgerald dreamed big, but she couldn’t have imagined that she would become one of the most venerated icons of the 20th century. Events in her life – tragedies and joys – branded her face into the American psyche. Enduring 104 years from cradle to grave, this woman of complexity, strengthened by faith and love of family, inspired the nation. Her candid reflections paint a unique and fascinating picture of the legendary Kennedy family. 14 PERFORMANCES ONLY

IRISH FESTIVAL
The late Senator Edward M. Kennedy once described Massachusetts as the “the most Irish-American state in the union,” and the city of Boston has been called “the Capital of Irish America.” The cultural, political and social ties between Ireland and Boston date back hundreds of years. ArtsEmerson: The World on Stage celebrates this bond with The Irish Festival, presenting important voices in Irish Theatre and celebrating the richness of the Irish theatrical tradition.

THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN DRUID THEATRE
The Cripple of Inishmaan is a comic masterpiece with eccentric island characters trading stories to within an inch of their lives while a young man tries to make sense of who he is. It’s 1934 and the sleepy island of Inishmaan is abuzz with the news that Hollywood filmmaker Robert Flaherty has arrived on the neighboring island of Inishmore to film his movie ‘The Man of Aran.’ For orphaned Billy Claven, who has been relentlessly scorned by Inishmaan’s inhabitants, the film represents an escape from the poverty of his existence. He vies for a part in the film, and to everyone’s surprise, it is the cripple who gets his chance. This production revives the unique partnership of the Druid ensemble with writer Martin McDonagh and Director Garry Hynes. 6 PERFORMANCES ONLY

Hold tight as the ordinary turns extraordinary in this vivid and exhilarating play. Catapult from the bustling streets to the skies above Dublin, then plummet deep to the bowels of the earth as three people are ripped from their daily lives and thrown into a fantastical world of singing serial killers, avenging angels and love-sick demons. As their stories progress, the narratives begin to intersect and crisscross, and their emotions, yearnings, and desires simmer and occasionally explode. Filled with humor, hope, and so much humanity that one leaves the play with a greater sense of being. While the characters journeys may end when the lights go out, yours will be continuing the tale for long after. 8 PERFORMANCES ONLY

SERIOUSLY THRILLING STUFF THE SCOTSMAN
The First World War is over, but some battles still rage on. This is the backdrop for Ernest Hemingway’s first major novel, The Sun Also Rises, which follows a group of weary, aimless and frequently inebriated American expatriates on a search for identity, diversion, and redemption. Told with spare and tightly written prose, Hemingway’s novel comes to life on a stage littered with liquor bottles and cafe chairs as the story winds its way through France and Spain and lands in the streets of Pamplona where bullfighting and the fiesta are in full swing.

Brook’s long awaited vision of Beckett’s Fragments plumbs the depths of Beckett’s sparse, dynamic texts, revealing humor and humanity. Says Brook, “Today, with the passage of time, we see how false were the labels first stuck on Beckett – despairing, negative, pessimistic. Indeed, he peers into the filthy abyss of human existence. His humor saves him and us from falling in. He rejects theories and dogmas, that offer pious consolations, yet his life was a constant, aching search for meaning.” 7 PERFORMANCES ONLY Photo: Arthur Franc

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE THEATRE FOR A NEW AUDIENCE
16 PERFORMANCES ONLY From the internationally lauded collaboration between New York’s Theatre for a New Audience and London’s Royal Shakespeare Company comes Shakespeare’s tragicomedy, fresh from hugely successful runs Off-Broadway and in StratfordUpon-Avon. Starring Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham in his riveting portrayal of Shylock, and directed by Darko Tresnjak (former Artistic Director, Old Globe), the play has been arousing controversies for centuries with raucous and gentle comedy, tender poetry, and its struggle with mercy and justice. In this riveting update, religion, race and sexuality collide with love, family and justice and the currency of society and humanity has never been so changeable.

THE ANDERSEN MODERN DAY PROJECT AFAIRY TALER EX MACHINA / ROBERT LEPAGE
The Opéra Garnier in Paris has commissioned a Québécois songwriter to write the libretto for a children’s opera based on a fairy-tale by Hans Christian Andersen. During his stay in a friend’s apartment on rue Saint-Denis he meets one of the Opéra’s senior managers, a man with some odd and unusual likings, a young janitor and graffiti artist of North African descent, as well as a dog who could well be guiding the tale along its way. Freely inspired by two stories by Andersen (The Dryad and The Shadow) and from anecdotes drawn from the famed Danish author’s Parisian travels, The Andersen Project explores the confrontation between romanticism and modernism, recognized and underground art forms, and past and present. 9 PERFORMANCES ONLY

A NEW EXPERIENCE IN PARTICIPATORY THEATRE. INCLUSIVE AND EMBRACING. I’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING QUITE LIKE IT.” BANK OF SCOTLAND CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
SUSURRUS Susurrus is part radio play, part sonic art, and part stroll in the park—a poignant story of misplaced passion that sensuously refracts the themes of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and includes music from Benjamin Britten’s opera of the same name. Edgy young Scottish playwright David Leddy’s site-responsive work melds dramatically spiraling theatrical writing and performance art in an unconventional location: the audience listens to Susurrus through the headset of an MP3 player while following a charted path through Boston’s exquisite Public Garden. It’s a play without actors, without a stage and with only one person in the audience: You.

“This is personal. The experience is not collective, but individual. You’ll wander Boston’s exquisite Garden alone. And, by the end, what begins as a loving family chronicle will, I guarantee, have you deeply disoriented, conflicted and emotionally stunned. ” Rob Orchard, ArtsEmerson p 27
