The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “WE’VE SHOWN SOME POSITIVE SIGINS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS BUT WE’RE STILL LACKING THAT LIMIT BIT OF SOMETHING ” Tonight we welcome Bootle to the Brian Addison Stadium in what I'm sure will be another exciting encounter. Last season Bootle just missed out on promotion and they'll be hoping to go one better this time round. They have a strong spine and some great attacking players. We've shown some positive signs in the last few weeks but we're still lacking that limit bit of something. We've got the talent, we've got the workrate. We're just lacking that little bit of luck. Football is a confidence game and I know as soon as we start picking up points we're only going to get better.
Let's hope after last weeks first point we can get our first victory tonight. Up the Gate

Tuesday 3rd October 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 82 Gate first chance game after 10 minutes. Midfielder Nick Greenall picked the ball up on the edge of the box, but his shot was fired over. The visitors could have opened the scoring and though they had after two minutes. They saw their shot saved by Ben Fletcher twice, the second on the line. The opening goal was unlucky not to come for Gate after 13 minutes. Instead it came for the visitors. After Tarren Moxon played in a teasing ball into the box the visitors cleared. They then opened the scoring down the other end. Kane Hickman finding himself in space from 25 yards out to fire into the bottom corner. Gate looked to get back into the game straight after the goal and almost did. Gal Pett played a great ball into the path of Jack Williams, but the striker caught the ball with too much power and fired over the bar. The visitors extended their lead on 26 minutes through a bullet header. A cross into the box after a Padiham Corner was cleared, found the head of defender Luke Holden, who headed in past Fletcher.
It was Gate that made a promising start to the second half, going close after 10 minutes. After Tarren Moxon was fouled, Gal Pett went close with a freekick. Gate would eventually grab a goal back after increasing pressure in the 77th minute. Gary Pett stepping up from the spot to fire the penalty into the bottom corner to give Gate hope. That hope spurred Gate on to look like a much different team. First Tarren Moxon came close when he couldn’t stretch far enough to reach Gal Pett’s deep cross. Then Danny Penswick’s freekick found Pett at the back post, but his stab at the ball was saved by the keeper. Gate would get the deserved goal their second half performance deserved late on in the 88th minute. Tarren Moxon took the ball in his stride to burst past the defender, before firing low last the keeper to equalise for Gate! Moxon then came close again late on to winning it for Gate, unluckily for Gate, his shot was saved. Gate keeper Ben Fletcher then had to be alert in the 93rd minute to make a point blank save to secure the draw for Gate

Saturday 7th October 2017 //The Reacreation Stadium // Attendance: 353 Gate were forced to make a an early change before kick off when Ben Fletcher was still in traffic. Midfielder Mike Hall going in goal and getting man of the match. West would take the lead just three minutes into the game. Winger Steer curling the ball inside the near post to beat Hall. Mike Hall then had to be alert on 7 minutes to pull of a superb save. He pushes the ball up before Jake Higham acrobatically cleared off the line with an overhead kick. Gates first chance of the game didn’t come till the 11th minute. A freekick to Gate after a foul on Penswick founds it’s way to Moxon at the back post, but his cross back in was too heavy. The home side would then go close on 15 minutes, luckily for Gate though they shot wide after Carroll missed his tackle. West would double their lead on 19 minutes. Farr to easy for them to just thread a pass through to Steer for his second of the game. Gate had a great chance to grab a goal back after 30 minutes, with not one but two shots falling to Thornber. He found the ball at his feet before shooting twice, both shots blocked by West. Gary Pett was the next to have a great chance for Gate. On 37 minutes the ball fell to the midfielder at the back post but he fired over. HT - West Didsbury 2-0 Squires Gate Gate would have to be alert early into the second half when they had to clear a west corner after a scramble in the box.
Gate then had a corner of their own after Moxon put the keeper under pressure, but Moorhead's header flew over the bar. Gate then mounted a counter after West had pushed forward, Tarren Moxon found Mark Buchan on the wing who returned the pass but Moxon's shot was weak and easily saved. The homeside would add another goal in the 71st minute. This time midfielder Matty Kay heading in at the back post after Gate allowed the cross to come in too easily. Dean Ing then had two seperate chances to grab a goal back for Gate. First his shot from distance just went over the crossbar. He then put a low cross into the box but that was put out for a corner, Gary Pett firing over the resulting corner. Striker Tom Bailey would then get in on the act on 81 minutes for the homeisde with a goal very similar to Kay's goal previously. The cross coming in too easily again and Bailey found himself at the back post to head in. Gate would get themselves a goal back a minute later. Sub Jack Williams firing low past the keeper after Mike Hall had left the ball for him. Sub Williams would then grab another goal into added time. A quality pass from manager Danny Penswick found the run of Williams who ran into the box and stretched to poke past the keeper. West coming close to clearing off the line but the retreating defender couldn't reach the ball.

THE BOSS
JOE DORAN & PHIL STAFFORD Former Bootle player and captain Phil Stafford has been appointed joint manager of Bootle FC, work-
.ing alongside Joe Doran. Joe Doran being working hard on his own for years and last year took Bootle to one off there highest finish but he and the club decided to bring in a good joint manager beside. There decide to bring in ex Bootle player and captain Phil Stafford. joe said in a stamen ot the league I have known Phil since school and we have played in the same teams on more occasions than I can remember. We have always shared the same values and philosophies about football and I can’t wait to get started with Phil. He has passion and commitment but more importantly brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club and I believe as team we can achieve our ultimate goal of the club. I am really happy that Phil agreed to join me at Bootle I know he has great affection for the club as do I so we will not rest until we succeed in our targets. 1st Division. Phil guided the REMY to their highest ever place finish of 3rd last season before eventually losing out in the playoffs to City Of Liverpool. Prior to joining REMY he guided Maghull FC to their first West Cheshire League Championship in his first full season of management. Phil and Joe will be joined by current Assistant Manager Richie Boswarva who will continue in his role. Tony Ellis, Nick Browne and James Hayes complete the management team.
BREIF HISTORY The original Bootle F.C. was formed in 1880 and played adjacent to Bootle Cricket Club, on Hawthorne Road. The club was Everton FC’s main rivals and competed with Everton for the prestigious place in the newly formed Football League. Because only one club per area was permitted to join, Bootle narrowly lost out, despite the fact that in the run up to the decision Everton was banned from the both the FA Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup the previous year. However, Bootle lost out and in 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, which became the newly formed Football League second division. That season was the most successful as the club finished league runners-up and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, losing to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing in a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out after one season due to ongoing financial problems. Ironically a new local club, Liverpool, took Bootle’s place in the second division. The possible resurrection of a Bootle team became a distinct probability in August 1947 when local councillors identified the popularity and talent on show in the ‘Bootle JOC’ league and knew the town was big enough to be put back on the football map with its own team again. For years now it had been an exporter of its many players to other clubs, both professional and semi-professional. The promise of sponsorship money from local businesses brought great optimism and the issue of one-shilling shares further boosted club finances. After local residents were assured that the ground at Bootle Stadium (Maguire Avenue) would not be used solely as a football ground, an application to join the Lancashire Combination for the 1948/49 season was made and accepted. Club colours even posed a problem, red or blue were dismissed for fear of showing favour to either of the ‘big two’ so it was agreed that, as the original Bootle FC wore white shorts, this colour would be adopted. Players mostly came from the local league and surrounding clubs, however one player that Bootle overlooked was a tall, blonde, ex-prisoner- of-war German, Bert Trautman. Trautman, then living in Huyton, trained with Bootle at the stadium for several weeks but, with the area taking such a heavy pounding during the war, it was decided not to tempt any local bitterness and he was allowed to join St Helens Town and of course moved on to FA Cup and Manchester City folklore. They kicked off their new campaign in 1948 against Barnoldswick and district. The league was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons and also a change in Council priorities they withdrew from the league and folded during the 1953–54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton with Frank Doran Senior being one of the founding members. The club played in the various local Bootle leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination – winning the leagues and cups on various occasions the club requested to change its name to the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. This was accepted in 1973 and a year later ‘the Bucks’ joined the Lancashire Combination. After winning the Combination in both 1976 and 1977, Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in the first season, and was promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North-West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division (Which is now called the Premier Division). The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when the club was relegated to the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park on Copy Lane closed its doors for the final time. In 2006 the club, with a new ground on Vesty Road, Bootle were elected back into Division 2 of the North-West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division winning the league Championship in the process. In 2009/10, the first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a more than respectable 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012. The 2016/17 season was Bootle’s best in the North-West Counties. Joe Doran’s side finished second agonisingly missing out on the title to eventual winners Atherton Collieries. The Bucks collected their highest ever points total, finishing with 92 points for the season. Doran’s side also reached the semi-finals of the Macron Challenge Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup. The 2016/17 season was also a memorable one for striker Ryan Cox, who wrote his name into the club’s history books. The hotshot forward netted 44 times in the campaign breaking Stevie O’Neill’s record of 42 for the most goals scored by a Bootle player in a season. Since 1953 Frank Doran Senior has been the mainstay of this era for Bootle FC.
VIEW FROM AWAY END
SAM INKSON
This week we interviewed Bootle fan Sam Inkson, we found out what his expectations as after Bootle good finished last season. We also found out what gate player that he secretly admire and we also found out what other club didn't know about Bootle. He also told us what his 5 a side team would be if as a manager off one. What are your expectations for the new season after last season 2nd Place finish? We had a great season last year and we always knew this one would be more difficult. It’s fair to say we’ve had a inconsistent start to the season, shown some of the class from last year at times but also been a learning curve aswell. Hopefully for the rest of the season we can just improve game on game, win as many as we can and see where we end up. Hopefully that is in one of the promotion places !
This season will been different to last because?
Fans from other club don't know that Bootle? In 1892 lost their place in the football league second division in due to financial problems, a side called “Liverpool” took their place. What could of been eyy !
If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld. 3 fantastic players that would walk into any team in the prem, I’m not a spurs fan by the way haha !
The league as a whole has become stronger. Widnes, Charnock Richard and that When was the last time you seen Squires Gate play? team who rent our ground coming up and Northwich Vic’s and Burscough coming down has really improved the standards also all teams have bought well West Dids Their resilient 2-0 over Bootle at our place last year. You were fantastic that day I & Chorlton in particular.. think our lads thought we would roll you over but it wasn’t to be. Bootle fans give the Squires Gate players a well deserved round of applause at the end of the game.
What has been ur most memorable moment of all time at Bootle?
If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Bootle players and
I’d have to go for the amount of last minute winners we had last season, the never 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? say die attitude. Abbey hey at home springs to mind, a Ste Jones winner in the 97th minute to keep us in the title race was special. Tony Rendell is a rock at the back for us. Paul Woolcott is the iniesta of non league. Scheimichal in goal, Steven Gerrard as the captain, Henry up front.
Do you think you have what it take to push yourself that little bit closer and win the league and get promotion? Runcorn Town have been unbelievable and they are so well organised back to front, they will take some beating. We’ve got a lot of new faces this season and maybe a different style of play aswell last season we had the you score 5 we will score 6 attitude at times as I mentioned before I’m sure if the team improve week on week we won’t be far off that top spot !
What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? When the fixtures were released the first games I looked for were the annual 6 points from AFC Liverpool and the two games against the team who rent our ground
What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? My favourite away ground in the league is Congleton, very hospitable there.
Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? I was a Ben Seear fan, I love natural goalscorers. I think the gaffer Danny Penswick has to be admired can’t be easy playing and managing at this level.
Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? With Liverpool I’ve been a few times, more bad memories than good! Ideal scenario has to be Bootle winning the Vase at Wembley.
Your most underrated player is? I don’t think any of the lads are underrated however I think that because Kieran Halligan always gives at least a 8/10 performance every week that it’s almost forgotten about how good he actually is, we just expect it from him.
Gate should keep eye out on what player from Bootle ? Obviously Ryan Cox, 44 goals last season and bagged a few this year. Lennon Whewell will be one to watch recently signed from Reymca only 19, the lad will go places, remember the name.
The best away fan are? Linnets. I think they rub some people up the wrong way but I love that, they are loud, they travel in numbers and they appeal for anything and everything. Bit like myself.
Prediction for today game? 7-4 Bootle win

Cox 22, Hailgan 51 Saturday 7th October 2017 / TDP Solicitors Stadium // Attendance: 195 Goals from Ryan Cox and Kieran Haligan helped Doran and Phil Stafford’s side return to winning ways after last weekend’s disappointing defeat away to Charnock Richard. After a tight opening, the game’s first real chance fell the way of the visitors. Ashford Blake broke clear down the right before the forward crossed for Adam Farrand who saw his effort superbly blocked by Jordan Gidley in the Bootle goal. But just like he's done so often in the past, Cox put the Bucks ahead with 22 minutes on the clock. After disposing Andrew Smith inside the Hey half, the hotshot forward advanced before letting fly with a thunderous drive from the edge of the box that found the corner of the net. Bootle went close to doubling their lead in the opening minute of the second-half. Captain Liam Loughlan released Lennon Whewell, but the forward's effort was blocked by the foot of Hey keeper, Elliot Wynne. Five minutes later and Doran and Stafford’s side would double their advantage. Some neat build-up play, eventually saw Cox find Haligan inside the Hey box before the right-winger let fly with a low-drive that found the bottom corner net. Both sides traded chances in the last thirty minutes with Bootle youngster Cameron Grant turning Connor Millington’s cross wide from closerange. While at the other end, Hey's best chance of a consolation fell to Peter Watling. Substitute Robert Swallow released the forward but his low-drive went wide of Gidley's far post. “I thought it was a really good performance,” said Doran speaking after the game.“It’s great to get a clean sheet; only our third of the season. That’s what we asked the lads the to do before the game – protect the zero, and they’ve done it.” The Bucks joint boss also believes his side must start to enjoy their football after a start he described as "not good enough". Doran said:“Let’s not beat around the bush the start hasn't been what we wanted, and everyone knows that. Myself, Phil, the team, and even the tea lady know the start to the season hasn’t been good enough. “After 12 games last season we were on 24 points, after 12 games this season we are on 21. We can’t control what other teams do if they’re picking up points and playing well then good for them. We have to concentrate on what we need to do, and that is to take each game as they come; look to advance in the cup competitions and most importantly: enjoy our 01 JORDAN GIDLEY 01 ELLIOT WYNNE football.” 02 MATTHEW COUGHLAN 02 MATTHEW COOK 03 JONATHON SWATTON

BOOTLE

Tuesday 23rd August 2016
Bootle made the better start to the game with some early possession but Gate stood strong and showed good determination not to jump in to rash challenges. For all the away sides possession though Gate took the lead after five minutes. It was the man who came into the starting line up how had the final touch in the box. Ben Seear tapping the ball in after a good corner from Moblet found him in the middle. Gate again sustained heavy pressure from Bootle but the away side couldn't find a way through. Dean Porter in net for Bootle did well to catch a Freekick from Gate but rushed the throw. The ball fell to Ric Seear who fed through Alex Mckendrick but his touch was heavy and the ball rolled out. The visitors would find an equaliser on 21 minutes. Penswick fouling a Bootle attacker just outside the box. Up stepped Steve Jones to our the ball into the bottom corner past Fletcher. Bootle would go on to score a second this time Jones grabbed his second of the game from a header into the box. Perhaps the best goal of the game came from Joe Noblet. He struck a superb Freekick from outside the box right into the top corner of the goal. Even a professional keeper would have struggled to save from the midfielder in form. As quickly as Gate scored the goal Bootle would equalise. Lethal striker Ryan Cox heading past Fletched just before the half time whistle. The second half saw a much better performance from Gate despite the two goals they scored first half. Gate would equalise on 57 minutes after a good start to the second half. The cross coming in from Jamie Gibson on the right found the head of Ric Seear to level the scores. The goal seemed to take something out of Bootle who's heads dropped. Though Gate had to call on Ben Fletcher in goal to save them as Bootle tried to find a winner. Fletch saving the ball which fell to Jones who in turn out the ball over the bar not expecting to get a second chance. The striker could have sealed his Hatrick but for Fletchers good save. Gate would make the visitors pay with just five minutes left on the clock. A Freekick near the corner flag was fired in by Joe Noblet. The set piece found the head of Brett Dawson for the inform striker to glance a header into the bottom corner for his third in three games. Gate saw out the game despite seven minutes added time played by a generous referee to remain unbeaten

SQUIRES GATE

Saturday 17th December 2016
Midfielder Mike Hall started in goal for Gate and played possibly his best game for the club. He had to be alert after 2 minutes to tip over a deep corner from the homeside after a bright start by Gate. Striker Brett Dawson started the game up top on his own in a demanding role and could and probably should have opened the scoring for Gate on 6 minutes. He was sent through one on one but saw his effort denied by the legs of keeper Jones. Three minutes later though Dawson would make up for his miss. He sent his full back the wrong way before passing across goal to the back post. Running in was midfielder Ben Seear, playing in an unfamiliar centre midfield role, to fire past Jones. Gate then had chances through Dawson again who's thunderous strike from distance was tipped over and Danny Penswick who's long range effort went wide of the post. Bootle started to mount pressure of their own looking for an equaliser and went close on 20 minutes. First Gate had to defend three corners in a row with the final corner poked wide at the front post. Then Mike Hall pulled off a superb save to tip over a shot after some nice play from Bootle. Gate could have made it 2-0 on 34 minutes but had an effort cleared off the line. Joe Noblet doing well to beat his man before squaring to the back post to find Richards but his scuffed shot in was cleared off the line. Gate would hold onto their lead until half time.
The second half would see Gate double their lead after some good defending from Bootle pressure. It was Defender Seydou Bamba in the right place at the right time to fire in after the corner fell to him in the middle of the goal. Gate would then go on to defend heroically after Bootle went more direct in the second half. Gate had two great chances in the last 10 minutes. First Brett Dawson was wrongly flagged offside from a defenders header with a clear path through on goal. Then Jake Higham beat the offside trap to square to Dawson but his shot was well saved by the keeper. Gate held on to record their first win of the month and become the first team to beat Bootle at home this season. It's also the first team Gate have done the league double over.

THE BIG INTERVIEW This week we interviewed Gate Capitan Mike Hall, we found out what encouraged him to get involved in football. We also found out what teams he was looking to facing in our division and found out about his time at gate. What teams are you looking forward to facing this season? I've heard City of Liverpool have a decent atmosphere at home and are doing well in the league at the moment so as a team I haven't played before that'll certainly be interesting.
Which teams do you think will be tough this season?
What is your goal target for the season ? Just a goal, from anywhere on the pitch, off any body part or via a number of deflections!
If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with. Who would you pick and why?
The 2 Runcorn teams are always up there, although we deserved more at Home to Runcorn Town. Bootle will be difficult on Tuesday evening but as my Dad was born there I'd hate to lose that one.
Scholes, Henry & Ronaldo - the three best players to have played in the Premier League in my opinion.
How well are you settling in at Gate after stepping as captain due to the departure of club Legend Rico?
What the first thing you do before any match?
It's been tough as it wasn't something I'd overly thought about before the season starting. Of course Rico was a great captain as well as a really great guy. In terms of myself, I just try to be myself rather than copy anybody in particular. I actually think as a young squad we have some good potential leaders so if I do focus on passing on words, it's mainly for the young guys so hopefully I can help them to settle in to life in adult football.
Go out and check the pitch - even though I decide what footwear to use before I even get there!
What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off?
What encouraged you to start playing football?
I'm sure the lads will have picked up on it but I always 'empty the bladder' just before the ref knocks on the door, just to be sure I'm 100% empty!
Mainly my dad, who took my to Foxhall F.C. aged 4.
What is the dressing like after gate getting on a good run if form
Who was your footballing idol as a kid?
I'll let you know over the next few games! When we got our highest ever finish a few years back, it was always lively and the players loved coming to games to prove a point as quality-wise we arguably weren't as talented as other groups that've been here. That's what we want to try and re-create sooner rather than later here.
One of my earlier one's was actually Peter Schmeichel (Certainly come in handy recently!). Zidane was and still is my favourite player though, he could do anything despite a lack of pace, which always gave me a glimmer of hope!
If you weren't a Midfielder/ Goalkeeper, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time? I think I just need right back to complete the set - I'd also like just one game up front to finally open my Squires Gate goal account!
What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game?
What if personal targets do you set each time you step out on that pitch They're quite subjective targets as opposed to numerical ones, but if I feel I've positively affected the game and dictated as much of the tempo of the game as possible I feel I've contributed the best that I can for the team.
Do you prepare any differently for big game then you do for normal ? I try not to but some players try to and it works for them. I prefer to treat it as a normal game as I prefer to be relaxed over pumped up.
What European team u loved for Gate to go up against in game As with us so far this season, the psychological side of the game is massive and probably under appreciated for a long time. For me, the best players manage their own head effectively, and the lesser players capitalise on big team's weaknesses by being psychologically strong in terms of self belief.
If you could pick one BPL Team for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why? Pains me to say it as an Everton fan but Liverpool at home would create a unique atmosphere and a special evening. Plus I think it'd be the first game that Magsy would be out-energised on the touchline by Jurgen Klopp!
What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? I think it was a miserable 0-0 game at Bloomfield Rd between Blackpool and Preston. I was stood behind the goal and could hardly see a thing all game ass there weren't many shots that day!
Favourite ground you have ever played at? I've been lucky enough to play at Leicester's king power stadium , though it was before they became champions so I might be being biased because of that!
I'll go with Borussia Dortmund away, again for the atmosphere and stadium.
After being at gate for some time what is your most memorable game at gate and why? Bootle away! Only 11 players and my first game in goal for Gate, which resulted in a clean sheet but also an unbelievable team spirit from start to finish.
Prediction for today's game? We don't do it on purpose but there's always goals both for and against us, so I'll go 3-2 to Gate!
THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.
EUROPEAN CUPBOOTS KICKS OFF HETHE DIED WITH HIS ON
1955 1987
On 6 October 1987, Roald Jensen, widely considered Norway's greatest player, died while training with his old club, SK Brann. He was 44 years old. Nicknamed "Knicksen"( meaning "juggler") for his tremendous technical ability with the ball, Jensen joined Brann in 1956 as a youth player, then made his first-team debut in 1960 when he was 17 years old. He earned his first cap for the national team that same year. In his first three seasons with Brann, they won the league twice (1962 and 1963), but his fourth season ended in relegation, prompting his move to Scotland, where he turned professional and became Heart of Midlothian's player from outside the UK. He remained with Hearts for six seasons, then returned to Brann in 1971 and stayed until 1973, when a dispute with the team's manager led to Jensen's retirement in 1973 at the age of 30. He continued to be involved with the club, however, and was training with them when he collapsed and died. Three years after his death, the Norwegian football association honored Jensen with the creation of the Knicksen Award, given annually to the best player in Norway's top flight. In 1995, Brann further celebrated
HIBS JUST GOT REAL
1964
On 7 October 1964, Hibernian hosted Real Madrid in a friendly, beating the Spanish champions 2-0. Accepting an invitation from Hibs manager Jock Stein, Real Madrid arrived at Easter Road having won the last four La Liga titles and having finished as runners-up in the previous season's European Cup. Their line-up boasted a number of stars, none brighter than their prolific forward pairing of Ferenc Puskรกs and Francisco Gento. But they were up against a Hibs team that included six Scottish internationals, including forward Willie Hamilton. But it was Hibs' unheralded 19-year old midfielder Peter Cormack who scored the opening goal to put the hosts up 1-0. They then got a second, though reports disagree as to who scored it; some say it was forward Jim Scott, while others claim it was an own goal from Real Madrid left half Ignacio Zoco. Either way, it cemented a 2-0 victory for Hibs that saw the
SOMETIMES, IT HELPS TO READ THE RULE IN ADVANCE On 8 October 2011, South Africa played to a scoreless draw with Sierra Leone, thinking the result qualified them for the African Cup of Nations. They were wrong. It was the final match for both teams in Group G of the tournament's qualifying stage, with South Africa starting the day one point behind group leaders Niger, who were playing Egypt at the same time South Africa faced off against Sierra Leone. With the latter two locked in a scoreless draw midway through the second half, South Africa received news that Niger had fallen behind Egypt by the score of 3-0. If the scores held, South Africa and Niger would finish level on points, but South Africa would have a goal differential of +2 to Niger's -2. Content to play for the draw, South African boss Pitso Mosimane made a late substitution, bringing on a midfielder in place of a striker. And, when the match ended 0-0, the South Africans celebrated the result with a dance and a lap of honor before their exultant fans. What they failed to realize, however, was that goal differential did not serve as the tie-breaker. Instead, the rules of the tournament provided that teams level on points were to be ranked by their headto-head record against each other. That metric favored Niger. South Africa lodged a protest, claiming that goal differential should have been the deciding factor, but later dropped their appeal. Niger advanced to the Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage after losing all three matches.
