TWO

SUGARS We caught up with manager Luke Evans over a brew this week, as he gave us his thoughts on the week ahead...

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to this afternoon’s game with Burscough. I’d like to start by welcoming their supporters and staff.

The first 40 minutes against 1874 Northwich is exactly what this team is about. That is the sort of football I expect from the lads, and you wouldn’t We’re well underway with the league season now, have believed were yet to win a game. They are a very good side, and at the end we had Jordan to and it’s fair to say that we are disappointed with how the results have gone. But we are all working thank for keeping us in front. He’s a terrific keeper, hard in training to make sure we put things right on and we are very lucky to have him. the pitch. Burscough are yet to play a game, so they will be raring to go ahead of the game and we know that I would like to personally apologise for the performance last week against Bootle. A big thank we need to be better. you to those who travelled down to support us. It’s not been the ideal start for us in any sense but we want to remain positive and remember that we still have the majority of the season to play out yet. We have to remember that it’s a weird season for everyone and there has been some freak results for quite a few teams. I’m not saying it’s acceptable to concede 7 but if you look at the results around us. It doesn’t look out of place - Winsford scoring 10 goals the other week for example…

I’d like to say a quick thank you to all the volunteers who continue to work hard to keep the club running. I appreciate it, and I know I speak for Tony when I say he does too. As a club, we are really starting to build something here and I do believe that once we start getting a couple of wins under our belt then we will become a very solid team to beat. Keep the faith, and thanks for your support. Luke

BURSCOUGH 1955/56 saw arguably the club’s greatest ever achievement as they won the First Division Championship ahead of non-league giants Wigan Athletic. In 1959 they reached the First Round of the F.A. Cup for the first time; going down 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra in front of a 4,200 gate at Victoria Park. In 1970/71 Burscough joined the Cheshire County League, finishing runners-up to Rossendale United. The following season they won the Liverpool Non-League Senior Cup and in 1974/75 the Cheshire League Cup was lifted. The Linnets also reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper on three other occasions.

In 2000/01 season the Linnets won the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first ever time after beating Conference side Southport. Following the resignation of John Davison the club appointed Shaun Teale as player manager in May 2002 and the ex-Aston Villa defender went on to sensationally lead the club to its greatest ever achievement as Burscough became the smallest club to ever win the FA Trophy following a tremendous 2-1 victory over Tamworth at Villa Park on Sunday 18th May 2003 in front of a crowd of 14,296 spectators and televised live on Sky.

FROM THE ARCHIVE

Words from Gibbos 92 blog. It was a promising start to the match from both sides, and Trafford almost took the lead in the 3rd minute when Andy Smart’s free-kick was headed towards goal by a Burscough defender. It had been end to end so far, and the away side were keen to exploit the flanks. Shelton Payne on the wing for Trafford was getting abuse off his own team mates after a couple of minor mistakes. As is so often the case with football, Payne went and proved a point just a minute later when he scored a fantastic solo effort. Cutting in from the right hand side, he beat three defenders, before firing the ball into the top left hand corner from the edge of the box.

Four minutes later and Shelton Payne should have doubled his and his sides lead. His pace proved too great for the struggling Burscough defence. Taking the ball around the keeper, he then dragged his shot wide of an open net. Will Ahern also wasted a fantastic opportunity, when he found himself one on one with goal keeper Read. Shipton charged down the left hand flank and sent an asking cross into the Linnets box. Burscough defender Dave Roberts got his head to the cross, but the ball fell to Shelton Payne who fired the ball back across the face of goal to make it 2-0 to Trafford. The home side did have the odd moment of joy possession wise, but I find it hard to remember many clear cut chances. Trafford were keen to capitalise on a slow Burscough defence, and so kept knocking the ball over the top for Michael Oates to run on to. It was Oates who had a chance on the stroke of half time to make it 3-0, but instead of calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net… it went out for a throw in.

A projector was showing the Arsenal v Blackburn FA Cup match on the wall. Fans were crowding the bar to buy their half time drinks. I just sat on a small table by the door with Lucy and Grandad, admiring the vast collection of football scarfs dotted around the room. Every country in Europe was represented. Every region of non-league football was represented. It was brilliant. Through the gap in the door, I could see the teams coming back out for the second half. Trafford were out first for obvious reasons! It was clear for all to see that Burscough would have been in for the hair dryer treatment at half time. The words of their manager must have paid off too, as within just 5 minutes the home side pulled a goal back. The ball fell for David Lynch, who smashed the ball into the right hand corner from 20 yards out. A minute later and it looked like Burscough had levelled the match when Louis Mayer headed the ball past Read in the Trafford goal. The linesman saw an offside, and the goal was disallowed. We suddenly had a game on our hands, which was good from a neutral perspective. Martyn Andrews went close with a rasping effort, before substitute Chris Palmer didn’t quite get the contact on a low cross. Palmer knocked the ball towards goal with a scuffed effort, but the ball was scrambled off the goal line. Michael Oates was then denied again by Horn as Trafford began to play their fast, relentless style of football. The visitors scored their third on 78 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty after Martyn Andrews was tripped in the area. I thought it was a very soft penalty, but it really wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the match. Shelton Payne placed the ball on the spot, and cooly converted to score his hat trick.

It had been a very pleasing and comfortable result for Half time arrived, and Trafford in all fairness could have been Trafford. The result was made even better when it was revealed that both Skelmersdale and Mossley had dropped leading 10-0. We made our way over to the Barons Club for half time. Walking through the door, I noticed a group of men points in the promotion chase. I have seen all three sides on numerous occasions this season, and I feel it will be in the corner with no tops on. For a moment I thought I had Skelmersdale and Trafford who take up the two automatic walked into Burscoughs top of the range gay bar. Then it all promotion places. Mossley started the season off well, but became clear. The lads who were playing football on the seem to be fading somewhat. neighbouring pitch when we arrived were now using the bar as a changing room.

Atlético’s When you research the history of Atlético Baleares, you can’t debut season was a mixed bag, with impressive home form help but feel that something, somewhere has gone very earning a tenth place finish. 1994/95 COLOURS

In a brand new feature, we will be taking a look at some kits from the past. In True Colours, you can relive some of the best and worst strips from every Premier League campaign. Our contributors for this feature are - Russell Cox (@RussWWFC), AET Shirts (@AETShirts), and The Shirt Union (@TheShirtUnion) We asked them to pick 2 of their favourite kits, and 2 of their least favourite kits. Read more about which kits they chose.

RUSSELL COX (@RussWWFC): This season was probably the birth of the modern-day Premiership as a top-ranking league, although it would take a few more seasons for the transformation to fully take place. Whereas Serie A was top dog for the first few years of the 1990s, the World Cup of 1994 saw a big influx of top stars into the English League. Success of the players varied and Tottenham Hotspur were at the forefront of this craze with Jurgen Klinsmann being amongst the most successful. This was the start of the era of a lot of clubs changing their kits every season and Aston Villa had some of the best in their history with a great home and away set sponsored by Muller Yoghurts. The kit was worn by the likes of Uho Ehiogu, Paul McGrath, Dean Saunders and Dalian Atkinson. Villa had won the League Cup the previous season and big things were expected of them. But it was to be a disappointing season. In the UEFA Cup, they beat Inter Milan on penalties but lost to Turkish side Trabzanspor in the next round. The league table saw them finish in 18th place and in any other season they would have been relegated but league restructuring saw them stay up. Blackburn Rovers would memorably win the league at the expense of Manchester United although the latter had an interesting shirt with an image of Old Trafford incorporated into the design. Chelsea sported an interesting orange and grey design for their change strip and although it's often considered as one of the worst kits of all-time, I actually quite liked it. There's not much to dislike amongst this seasons shirts but being picky, the Liverpool third shirt and some of Manchester United's goalkeeper shirts have not aged well. Pictured left: Man United home shirt, with Old Trafford incorporated into the background. Pictured right: Aston Villa’s home shirt, with the blue pinstripes.

THE SHIRT UNION Great designs and successful seasons aren’t the only contributing factors that makes us remember a shirt fondly. Sometimes it’s key iconic moments draped in those jerseys, and the 1994/95 season was so jam packed full of them, that it almost put Roberto Baggio’s penalty miss that summer firmly in the shadows. Who can forget Jurgen Klinsmann’s introduction to English football and his ‘diving’ celebration to light-heartedly mock the crowd. Robbie Fowler’s 4 and a half minute hattrick at the tender age of 19 against Arsenal. Or perhaps even the uglier moments such as when Eric Cantona decided to take crowd control into his own hands at Crystal Palace. All iconic moments, all in some fantastic 90’s football attire. Perhaps the pinnacle moment of the 1994/95 season was Matt le Tissier’s goal of the season, a 35-yard strike after jinking past Blackburn’s midfield which nestled into the top corner. Le Tissier, of course, was better known back then for his goal contributions for Southampton than tweeting about Covid-19. At the time, Southampton rocked one of the great shirts of that season. The chevron on the home shirt actually cleverly deputises as an extra-large version of the Pony logo, working really well with The Saints’ traditional stripes, whilst the Dimplex sponsor looks great in place too. At the other end of the scale there was Everton and Umbro. Now, we’re all up for logo distortions and funky patterns, but this one has a real slap-dash feel to it. Broken up into chunky panels that sit to the side of the shirt and under the arms, there is an addition of another panel, this time grey and dotty in complexion, and acting somewhere between an off-centre stripe and a sash. It’s all rather uncoordinated. Something a little more co-ordinated in terms of symmetry was the Chelsea away shirt. But that’s where the plaudits stop unfortunately. If you’re going to use a design that oddly divides the shirt using panels, stripes and piping, then at least use a colour scheme that compliments it.

Controversial orange kit from Chelsea in 1994/95.

We’ll round out the 1994/95 season by favourably highlighting the Liverpool home and away kits of this season. Big logos were all the rage in the 90’s, and Adidas were no different. Whether it was creeping over a player’s shoulder or appearing from under the arms like 3 beaming lights, we found it hard to not pay homage to this notable style at least once in this series. Sometimes templates get a bad wrap in the football shirt world, but this style was so popular that even to this day shirts with those huge stripes command eye-watering prices. We might not like Liverpool, but these shirts deserve some recognition.

Wimbledon (A) As I've probably said before this is kind of my era so I'm going to struggle when this article gets out of the '90s! but all the kits of this season bring back memories so its tricky to find any ones I really dislike. This is a bit plain I guess, doesn't do much, didn't they have a red one around this era too, that was better.

Hello Blackpool! I hope you are keeping well in these uncertain times, that life has not been too disrupted by these recent changes to what we are allowed and not allowed to do. Until said otherwise, football continues to roll on in it’s own special way, from the top of the pyramid to the bottom, different rules dictate who can attend and who can't, and how many are allowed in the turnstiles if they are.

Well, the back cover of this book defines itself as “biographical fiction” so a definition of the term is as good a place as any to begin. FOOTBALL IN: LUXEMBOURG Last issue, we began our new feature about football in Luxembourg. This week, we learn more about the history of football in the country, as @LuxembourgFooty give us an insight into what we could expect if we were to ever watch a game there. The History Of Luxembourg Football Despite never being a powerhouse in European football, Luxembourg does have its history – a history of more than 100 years. It all started 114 years ago when an English language teacher called Jean Roeder decided to build a football club.

ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE? If you enjoyed reading this, be sure to check out @LuxembourgFooty on Twitter for all the latest updates. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be finding out more about the lower leagues, a usual match day experience, what are the best teams in Luxembourg and the best stadiums.

He spent 11 years in the UK before, and after returning he felt he couldn’t live without his beloved sport. But even though he returned home in 1890, he had to spent years searching for a pitch, trying to convince the country that it helps to stay healthy and it isn’t dangerous or brutal at all. In 1906, Roeder was finally able to recruit 11 players (mostly his pupils from high school). They together founded CS Fola Football and Lawtennis Club, holding their first meeting on 9 December that year. Two years later, there were enough clubs to form their championship, which was first held in 1909/10, won by now-defunct Racing Club Luxembourg. After next year’s title being won by Sporting Club Luxembourg, the national team played their first-ever friendly game against France, losing 1-4 on 29 October 1911. Their first victory however came almost three years later, beating France in a 5-4 thriller. Surprisingly, for unknown reasons, the championship wasn’t held in 1912-13. The biggest club in the country at the time was arguably Hollerich (x5 winners, x2 runners-up) in the 1910s. Another team worth mentioning is Fola, who won two and finished 2nd twice as well.

A look at two notable games, previously played on today’s date.

31st October 2009

20th October 2015

Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham

Chelsea 1-3 Liverpool

Arsenal emphatically swept aside claims from Tottenham that they were ready to challenge the supremacy of their north London rivals with a convincing victory at the Emirates.

Liverpool piled the pressure on Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as Jurgen Klopp secured a hugely impressive first Premier League win since taking charge at Anfield.

The game turned inside 11 seconds shortly before the interval as the Gunners struck twice to set up a victory that gave manager Arsene Wenger 1000 Premier League points since his arrival at the club in 1996.

Chelsea made the perfect start when Ramires headed them into the lead after only three minutes but Liverpool's confidence was not dented and Philippe Coutinho equalised spectacularly in first-half stoppage time.

It also ended any hopes Spurs may have harboured of ending a winless league sequence against Arsenal that now stretches back 20 games.

Mourinho will have been demanding a fast start and his players delivered. Azpilicueta raced away down the left flank and picked out the on-rushing Ramires, who beat Alberto Moreno to the ball and powered a header into the net from close range.

Robin van Persie reacted quicker than Ledley King to meet Bacary Sagna's cross in the 42nd minute, but Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes should have done much better than fumble the ball over the line. Referee Mark Clattenburg played a clever advantage after Benoit Assou-Ekotto had fouled Eduardo and, while Spurs inexplicably waited for a whistle that was never going to come, Sagna set up Van Persie for his second from eight yards. As the linesman flagged for a foul by Assou-Ekotto on Eduardo, Spurs defenders stood around obligingly as referee Clattenburg played a splendid advantage. Sagna took advantage with a ball into the box that was bundled home by Van Persie.

With half-time approaching, Liverpool drew level. The visitors worked the ball to Coutinho on the edge of the box and he danced inside before curling a fantastic effort into the far corner. Oscar nearly caught a back-pedalling Simon Mignolet out from 40 yards but just five minutes later Chelsea's season hit a new low as Coutinho grabbed his second. With Stamford Bridge stunned and chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" emanating from the away end towards Mourinho, Liverpool got their third on 83 minutes.
