Famous Faces– in a brand new Pre-season Action– we catch you feature we found what famous faces used to play for Burscough all up with how gate pre season and then how they carer plan out went and report from them after they left.

“THE BEST IS YET TO COME” As we start the new campaign, Clarkson expects to build on last seasons 8th placed finish, and says his side are more than capable of finishing in the top three this season. “The lads did brilliantly to finish 8th, especially when you consider some of the budgets that other teams had. Our aim at the start of last season was always a top 10 finish, this season we are aiming even higher. The best is yet to come”

I’d like to welcome you all back to The Brian Addison Stadium, the summer period is over and the hard work has already begun for us. The lads have been putting in some good shifts during training and pre season, and we are ready for another good campaign. Last time we welcomed Burscough here, was about the same time last season, in which we had probably one of our best wins of the campaign. We have had a very testing pre season, facing some very good capable sides and I am proud of the lads who have not stopped pushing themselves to the limit, and I feel like the best is yet to come. Saturday we faced a strong, title contending Runcorn Town side which was always going to be a difficult place to visit but after we managed to win there last season, we went in ready for the challenge. I always prepare the lads the best I can, and know that we are capable of competing in this league. Burscough will be another challenge tonight, they have made a few changes to the team that came here last season and under Nick, they will be a top side. I am sure that it is going to be an entertaining game, with both sides going into tonight on the back of a defeat. Enjoy the game, Andy

MEET THE MANAGER

Nick Matthews 43 year old Matthews was appointed manager around 5 weeks ago and has had to rebuild his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. Speaking to the NWCFL website, Nick said that the first thing he wanted to do was assess the players that were wanting to stay at the club. The first training session that he held, he had around 27 lads for trials. “At the start of the season, I think every club in the league would like to say yes, we want to be in the top 3, but you have to be realistic.” With a rich history in the Emirates FA Cup, Matthews wants to recreate some of the clubs historic runs and says it would be a dream. Matthews takes on his first managerial role at a NWCFL club, but his previous role in this league was as Assistant Manager to Phil Greasley at Atherton LR, 8 years ago. He took St Helens Town to their highest position in 15 years, and finished just a point off the play offs, losing out to champions Hanley on the final day of the season. He was part of the backroom staff that took Widnes to a First Division win under Joey Dunn. Joey left and he worked under Steve Akrigg and Towey. “It’s a long term plan and we have the chance of moving to a new stadium and being able to build with the team. We’ve signed a couple of top young players, who have been at Chorley and Chester so, with some good help we want to progress as a club.”

Craig Noone, started at Skelmersdale United as a youth player and was tipped as a player with great potential. He had a trial with Royal Antwerp in 2007, and later that year joined Burscough.

ONES TO WATCH Pete Hill gives us an insight to which Burscough players he thinks will cause some problems for Gate today. Burscough have made a few changes to their squad this season, but under new management, they will be a force ready to compete in the league.

BEN LIGHTFOOT RIGHT BACK Previously of Chorley U21, and AFC Liverpool. A cultural right back who is comfortable on the ball, solid and composed. He knows where his back line is and he will always get stuck in.

ANDY PRESHO RIGHT BACK Former player of St Helens Town, Andy is a versatile player who is comfortable playing anywhere across the back four or midfield. He would be seen as a typical box to box midfielder and consistently covers wherever he is needed, he is there to pick up whatever the midfield don't deal with or he will be there to pick out a pass to an attacker in space. He has impressed this pre season, and going forward I think he will be a key part to the team.

SAM TURNBALL MIDFILEDER Previously of Chorley U21, Sam is another midfielder who can control the game, he has experience and has the ability to stay consistent throughout the game. He will win headers, battle, and go forward when we are attacking. He will be vital in our midfield this season.

Gate came away victorious in our first pre season game in preparation for the new season. Two goals from Dean Ing and a penalty just before half time from James Boyd gave Gate a comfortable lead at half time before a flurry of second half changes saw another goal for Gate this time from Jake Higham. In total six new faces were named in the squad all looking to impress Clarkson. Good pressing from Gate from the get go saw the homeside under pressure before Dean Ing pounced and fires past the keeper. Gate then had a good spell of possession in the game getting in good areas but couldn’t punish there hosts. The second goal came for after 15 minutes, Sam Staunton-Turner picked up the ball in the centre circle before spraying a diagonal pass across to Joey Mullen. Mullen took the ball down before crossing low to find Ing who calmly slotted in for his second of the game. Dave Rossall round Riccardo Egidi who flicked the ball on after 34 minutes, he found a Trialist but his low shot was wide. Gates third of the game came from the penalty spot. James Boyd took the ball around a defender and then the keeper before a second defender came clattering through the back of him. Boyd himself stepped up and calmly slotted past the keeper.

The second half saw a different performance from Gate, something which would be expected in Pre season. With a lot of changes and Trialist entering the game throughout, Gate took a while to get going. Gate did have the ball in the goal again but it was ruled out for offside. After a one touch passing move involved three players, Ryan Charnley was deemed to have gone too early and was flagged offside. A fourth goal came for Gate with 15 minutes of the game left. It was one of Andy Clarkson’s new signings that finished off another impressive passing move. Three of Gate’s Trialist’s linked up well and found left back Jake Higham bursting into the box, he took one touch before firing past the keeper with his right foot. After watching his sides performance, Andy Clarkson was pleased with why he saw: “We did well out there, considering we’ve only been back for two sessions against a side who have been back for five and played two games. The lads that came in that we wanted to have a look at in a game situation and we can take that forward.” Reported by Mark Ashmore

Before the game Gate announced that Keeper Ben Fletcher and defender Joey Mullen had re signed for the new season alongside youngster John-Jo Morris who signed after his release from Accrington Stanley. A back pass from Lancaster defender Glen Steel almost caught out Keeper Sam Ashton but he just reached the ball and cleared for a corner. The visitors had the chance to open the scoring after 10 minutes when former Blackpool striker Matthew Blinkhorn was fouled on the edge of the box. Half Time: 1—0 The second half saw plenty of changes for the visitors who changed seven of the starting eleven on the hour mark. Those changes included Rob Henry who was returning to the club for the first time. Gate themselves made changes with Riccardo Egidi and Sam Staunton-Turner being replaced. Egis’s replacement was fouled on the edge of the box after 63 minutes. New Gate signing John-Jo Morris stepped up but his freekick was easily caught by the keeper. The visitors almost pulled a goal back in the 70th minute. A cross floated over Gate’s defence but luckily the crossbar was in the way and Gate cleared. Lancaster did equalise 14 minutes before full time. Some over playing from Gate in midfield saw Lancaster win the ball back and punch on Gate who were out of position. The ball was picked up by midfielder Rob Wilson and he fired low to equalise. Reported by Mark Ashmore.

BLACKPOOL

PICTURES BY Albert Cooper The home side’s physicality proved the difference in the first half as Squires Gate edged two goals in front thanks to goals from Josh Pollard and Ryan Riley. But they were unable to hold on to their two-goal advantage, as the Seasiders - whose side included mostly youngsters but also a handful of fringe first-team players - scored twice in the final eight minutes of the opening period courtesy of Ryley Smith and Yusifu Ceesay. It remained level until the 70th minute, when Ceesay struck for the second time to put the Seasiders in front for the first time - a goal which opened the floodgates. Pool’s extra quality told in the final stages as four further goals followed, two coming from Ewan Bange and one each for Emil Jaaskelainenand Rowan Roache. Manager Simon Grayson watched on from the sidelines alongside assistant Ian Miller, but it was first-team coach Ian Dawes who took control of proceedings. The Seasiders almost made an instant impact, Yusifu Ceesay seeing sight of goal inside the opening 15 seconds. The winger engineered himself a few yards of space near the corner of the Squires Gate box but could only direct his shot wide. Pool were reliant on an excellent reaction stop from Jack Sims to stop them going a goal down on 10 minutes, the young shot stopper flying across his goal to save from Ryan Riley. The two sides exchanged gilt-edged chances to open the scoring, Ewan Bange fluffing his lines and failing to make contact from a Nathan Shaw cross before Dean Ing headed over from close range at the other end. Pool had the ball in the back of the net on 18 minutes when Bange drove the ball home from inside the area, but his effort was immediately ruled out for offside. Matters were made even worse for the young Seasiders when they went a goal down on 20 minutes. It was a poor goal to concede too, Josh Pollard beating keeper Jack Sims to a long ball over the top and poking the ball past him and into the back of the net. and slotting home into an empty net.

After a short water break, Pool found themselves falling two goals behind as Riley curled home a delicious effort from 25 yards out, giving Sims no chance. But the Seasiders reacted well, reducing the arrears immediately as midfielder Ryley Smith slotted home from close range after the Squires Gate keeper left too much of a gap for him to exploit. And Pool drew themselves level on the stroke of half time, keeper Ben Fletcher fumbling Yusifu Ceesay’s shot into the back of his own net. The Seasiders were inches away from edging in front at the start of the second half, Bange coming within inches of reaching Shaw’s teasing cross - only for it just to evade him. Centre back Harry Winstanley wasted a good chance from inside Squires Gate’s six-yard box, only getting the slightest of touches to Rowan Roache’s corner and the opportunity went begging. Squires Gate’s Dean Ing went close to netting twice in quick succession, first seeing an angled drive narrowly miss the top corner before being denied by a strong save by halftime sub Myles Boney. The shot stopper was again required to make a vital save to keep his side on level terms, getting down well to stop the right back’s fierce volley. With 20 minutes remaining, Pool got their noses in front for the first time as Ceesay added his second of the game. The winger, who had been a threat all evening, had the simple task of nodding home unmarked from Shaw’s cross. It took just five minutes for Pool to extend their lead further, striker Emil Jaaskelainen sending a sublime first-time volley on the turn past the Squires Gate keeper. Pool looked like scoring every time they came forward in the final stages and a fifth soon followed, Bange dispossesing the keeper to give himself the simple task of tapping home into an empty net. It only got worse for the home side, who conceded a sixth with eight minutes remaining after Pool were awarded a penalty for a foul on Bange just inside the Squires Gate box. Roache was the man given responsibility for the spot kick and he made no mistake, driving the ball high into the net. Bange should have added a seventh, and his second of the game, in the last minute but he squandered a free header at the back post. The tall striker made up for the miss in the final action of the game, rounding the keeper

Wren Rovers kicked off their campaign with a win on Saturday, as they hosted Euxton Villa. It wasn't the start that they had hoped for when they found themselves chasing the game at half time. First half goals from Walker, and ex Gate defender Alex Colquhoun for the visitors. But a brace from Eastwood got the hosts level with 10 minutes left on the clock and Crolla completed the comeback and secured all 3 points for Wren. They host Fulwood Amateurs tonight at 6.45 and will be looking for back to back wins.

Lytham Town visited Burscough Richmond in their first game of the season, after being promoted last season. It was a competitive game and the only goal that separated came in the 90th minute when Ben Bradley netted on his debut for Lytham. Lytham play away at Poulton tonight at 6.45 where they will also be looking to get back to back victories.

Squires Gate opened the new league campaign with a 2-1 defeat away at Runcorn Town. Gate handed a debut to Chris Morris in defence whilst they welcomed back Jake Higham and Josh Westwood to the club. New signings Josh Pollard, Luke Noble and Ryan Dodd were all in line to make there debuts from the bench. Gate were on the back foot from the start against one of the favourites for promotion Runcorn Town. Runcorn’s first chance came after four minutes when a freekick was sent to the back post to find Thelwell but his shot was tame and wide. Craig Cairns found Forbes in the middle with a Pass just behind him, the midfielder turned and shot but again didn’t trouble Gate. Andy Clarkson’s men themselves had some chance but didn’t test Runcorn. A ball over the top found Mututu Chilufya but he shot wide. Ryan Riley then sent a corner in but nobody could meet it. Craig Cairns was again involved when he nicked the ball off a Gate defender but his shot was wide. Ryan Riley made space for himself down the right hand side after 25 minutes but his cross was out behind by Runcorn for a corner. The corner though came to nothing for Gate. Gate had keeper Josh Woods to thank minutes later when he was on hand to deny Town. Craig Cairns was found with a defence splitting pass but one on one Woods stood tall to push to shot onto the crossbar. Gates best chance of the first half came on 40 minutes. James Boyd’s shot was saved by Adam Reid in goal, his follow up shot was then cleared off the line by defender Marcus James. Josh Woods again saved Gate from going into half time a goal down. He was alert to tip over Craig Cairns shot after a good cross in found the striker in the box. Half time 0-0

The homeside opened the scoring ten minutes into the second half with a long range effort. Joe Holt given too much time and from 20 yards chose his spot past keeper Josh Woods. One of Gate’s new signing’s Luke Noble almost made an instant impact after coming onto the pitch in the 66th minute. He was sent in one on one but keeper Adam Reid did well to deny to striker, the follow up Corner was then defended well by Town. Runcorn then turned on the style and doubled their lead. Craig Cairns, who had been so influectional in Town’s attack, finally got his name on the scoresheet. He was sent through by McManus and the striker made no mistake to slot the ball past Woods. Noble again looked to test the keeper as time was running out for Gate to get something out of the game. He took aim from outside the box but his curled effort was easy for the Town keeper. Eventually the goal that Gate deserved came. On his debut for the club and after several earlier chances, Luke Noble grabbed a goal back. The striker rounding Adam Reid in goal before tapping the ball into the empty net. Late chances for both sides saw both number 1’s make good saves to keeper the scoreline down. Joe Holt was denied by Josh Woods whilst Luke Noble was denied by Adam Reid. Report by Mark Ashmore

RULE CHANGES Explained by Craig Kendall, on the NWCFL website The new season has bought a few new changes to the laws of the game. Both fans and players will need to learn what they are and how they will affect the game. Here are a list of the changes, and a bit of an explanation;

DROP BALL What’s new? • If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the keeper. • If play is stopped outside the area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. • In all cases, all the other players must be at least 4m (4.5 yards) away. • If the ball touches the referee, or another match official and goes into the goal, a promising attack starts or team possession changes, then a drop ball is awarded. Why the change? • The current dropped ball procedure often leads to ‘manufactured’ restart which is ‘exploited’ unfairly (e.g. kicking the ball out for a throw in deep into the opponents half, or an aggressive confrontation. Returning the ball to the team that last played it restores what was lost when play was stopped, except in the penalty area where it is simpler to return the ball to the goalkeeper. To prevent that team gaining an unfair advantage, all players of both teams, except the player receiving the ball must be at least 4m away. • It can be very unfair if a team gains an advantage or scores a goal because the ball has hit the match official, especially the referee.

FREE KICKS What’s new? • When there is a wall of three or more defenders, the attackers are not allowed within 1m of the wall; an attacker less than 1m away from the wall when the kick is taken will be penalised with an indirect free kick • When the defending team takes a free kick in their own penalty area, the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the penalty area before it can be played. Why the change? • Attackers standing very close to, or in, the defensive wall at a free kick often cause management problems and waste time. There is no legitimate tactical justification for attackers to be in the wall and their presence is against the spirit of the game and often damages the image of the game. • The experiment where, a defending team free kick in the penalty area, the ball is in play once it is kicked and does not have to leave the penalty area, has produced faster and more constructive restart. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area and at least 9.15m away until the ball is in play. The same change has been made to a goal kick.

HANDBALL What’s new? • Deliberate handball remains an offence • The following handball situations, even if accidental will be a free kick;  The ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking players arm  A player gains control of the ball after it has touched their hand/arm and then scores, or it creates a goal scoring opportunity  The ball touches a players hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger.  The ball touches a players hand/am when it is above their shoulder • The following will not usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the above situations;  The ball touches a players arm directing from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/ foot of another player who is near  The ball touches a players hand/arm which is close to their body and has not made their body unnaturally bigger.  If a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground to support the body.  If the goalkeeper attempts to clear a throw in or deliberate kick from a team mate but the clearance fails, the goalkeeper can then handle the ball Why the change? • Attackers standing very close to, or in, the defensive wall at a free kick often cause management problems and waste time. There is no legitimate tactical justification for attackers to be in the wall and their presence is against the spirit of the game and often damages the image of the game. • The experiment where, a defending team free kick in the penalty area, the ball is in play once it is kicked and does not have to leave the penalty area, has produced faster and more constructive restart. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area and at least 9.15m away until the ball is in play. The same change has been made to a goal kick.

THANK YOU TADDY

Volunteers never get the appreciation and acknowledgement that they deserve. Squires Gate, and a majority of non league clubs are run by volunteers who basically keep the grassroots clubs alive. Over the next few weeks, a page of our programme will be dedicated to the people who have worked unbelievably hard to keep Squires Gate going. Brian Addison, otherwise known by his friends at Gate as Taddy, has been at the club since he was a player himself. Over the years, he has been player, manager, chairman, groundsman and it is clear to see why the ground is named after him. The pitch that we play on today is in amazing condition yet again, and that is thanks to the hard work of Brian and his groundskeeping staff who put in hours and hours of their time into the club.

Brian has been involved at Gate for almost 60 years, and having the ground named in honour of him is the least the man deserves. He started out as a player in the NWCFL in the 1950s, when he joined as a player as an 18 year old. He didn’t finish playing until he was 54. He joined the committee and served as vice chairman for 10 years, and as chairman for a further 5 years. “It came as complete surprise to me and to say I was amazed, pleased, humbled and proud would be an understatement.” he said when he found out about the renaming of the stadium. “It’s fair to say Squires Gate would not exist without Brian Addison. Brian’s passion and commitment to the club is something we feel optimises what non league is all about” So thank you Brian for your hard work and contribution to the club.

Brian has won an award from the FA in 2017 for being voted Groundsman of the Year, but every- On Saturday, we will have another thank you to one at the club cannot thank the man enough one of our many volunteers. Could it be you? for the work he puts in.

NWCFL NEWS NEWS FROM AROUND THE NWCFL

Arguably one of the biggest games in the NWCFL top flight was at the Vestacare Stadium as last seasons First Division North two promoted sides Avro and Longridge Town went head-to-head. Michael Shenton had given the home side the lead just after the break, but two goals in ten minutes for Longridge from Paul Turner and Samuel Maddox turned the tie on its head to gift Lee Ashcroft’s side the win. Fellow promoted side Rylands (winners of the NWCFL First Division South last season), also managed to claim all three points as they mounted a 3-2 victory over last season’s 6th placed Charnock Richard. Rylands led after fifteen minutes, only for Carl Grisham to equalise on twenty-eight minutes. Then two quick goals for Rylands looked set to have clinched the points but a late goal set-up a grandstand finish, however, Rylands held on for the three points. Elsewhere, 1874 Northwich ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over Padiham to claim the top spot on goal difference. Four different scorers on the day will please managers Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison as they look to better their mid-table finish last season. Runcorn Town and Whitchurch Alport were the other winners of the day, with wins over Squires Gate (2-1), and Northwich Victoria (1-0) respectively. Runcorn raced into a two-goal lead with a Joe Holt and Craig Cairns finish mid-way through the second-half; Squires scored with eight minutes to go but Runcorn held out for the maximum points. Over in Wincham Park, fans of both sides were fumbling for their car keys seconds before the end, when Sean Griffiths netted a 93rd-minute winner much to the delight of visiting manager Luke Goddard. There were four score draws which rounded off an entertaining afternoon. Skelmersdale United came from behind twice away at Ashton Athletic as John Kearney netted the 92nd-minute equaliser as the game ended two a-piece. At the Silent Night Stadium, the 141 spectators were treated to a superbly entertaining matchup as Barnoldswick Town and Congleton Town shared a 6-goal thriller. Initially, Barnoldswick led through Joseph Noblet, but a brace from Emini Abegbengo turned the tie on its head. However, Barnoldswick came back to level mid-way through the second half, only for Congleton to take the lead once more with a Jordan Lorde finish. The scoring was complete seven minutes from time when Ashley Brierley slotted home. Last season’s runners up looked like they were heading for a single-goal victory through a Carl Peers first-half goal but Hanley Town huffed and puffed and eventually got a late, late 93rd-minute equaliser as they ended the day thirteenth and fourteenth in the standings respectively. In the First Division North section, three new sides were all in action as Golcar United, Pilkington and Emley AFC were all raring and ready to go at 3:00 pm. However, only one of the three new sides in Golcar managed to claim all three points with a narrow 2-1 victory over last seasons fifth-placed Prestwich Heys. Ben Burnett put Golcar in front, only for Heys to equalise when Will Shawcross netted. Alex Hallam, did, however, net moments before the break which sealed the win for one of the new boys on the block. Pilkington and Emley did not have the same luck as Golcar as the former went down 3-0 to long travellers Cleator Moor Celtic, James Bell, Callum Birdsall and Josh Charlton with the goals for Craig Routledge’s side. Emley certainly did not have the rub of any green on Saturday away at Lower Breck after as in the first half The Pewitt's saw themselves two goals down within twelve minutes, and two men down due to injuries. Emley did cause Breck some concern on forty-eight minutes when John Lududu netted, but just as the official signalled for injury-time, Conor Roberts settled the tie for Gary Moore’s Liverpool side. The best result of the day fell for AFC Darwen who ran out 6-1 winners away at Holker Old Boys. The victory, which included braces for Jack Iley, Aaron Fleming and single goals for Luke Holden and Corey Harrison, saw Luke Evan’s side travel back down the M6 with three points and the top spot for at least a few days. Ashton Town has certainly made a name for themselves off the field recently after tying up with Darts Professional Stephen Bunting and they certainly hit the big fish, defeating AFC Liverpool 5-1 to secure the second spot on opening day. Meanwhile, Daisy Hill pulled off a superb 3-1 win over Bacup Borough. Hill finished second-bottom last season whilst Bacup will be hoping to push on from their eighth-placed finish last term, and with goals from Joseph Mullarkey, an own goal and a Jordan Hussey finish, secured all three points. 120 fans packed into Chadderton’s ARK Fleetech Stadium and saw David Fish’s side come from behind twice against St Helens Town and eventually seal all three points thanks to a Leon Lluobe strike on sixty-nine minutes. Whilst Steeton and Shelley rounded up Saturday’s First Division North winners with 2-1 wins over AFC Blackpool and Garstang respectively. All three goals at the Mechanics Ground came in the first half with Steeton racing to a two-goal lead through Ben Clarkson and Jack Richmond. Seconds later, Blackpool had one back when Joe Robinson scored but they couldn’t muster another goal in the second half. Whilst in Lancashire, Craig Billington netted a brace for Shelley, their first-ever league win over Garstang. The only draw of the weekend in the NWCFL First Division North came at Nelson as they came from behind against last season’s bottom side Atherton LR. William Higginson put Atherton ahead on fifty-three minutes, but just 90 seconds later the score was level as Jack Coop scored as the game ended 1-1. And in the First Division South, fans were treated to a feast to super value-for-money games up and down the region. Just two new teams entered the league this term as West Didsbury & Chorlton and Abbey Hey were both relegated from the NWCFL top flight last season. There were mixed fortunes for both sides as West ran out 4-0 winners away at Eccleshall, whilst Abbey suffered a 4-2 defeat at home against last season’s runners-up Vauxhall Motors James Cottee, Jamie Forbes, Matthew Eckersley and Joshua Tinker all netted for West as they look to return straight away to the NWCFL Premier Division. However, Abbey fell to a defeat at the hands of one of the favourites Vauxhall, as Abbey initially took the lead through Deane Smalley, but the visitors rallied with four goals, two in either half as they took control at M18. A further consolation goal was scored by Abbey’s Smalley, his second of the afternoon but that was it in front

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid By David Richardson Here we go! Nine months of twists and turns, shocks and surprises and everything in between is about to start all over again! It seems pre-season has raced by during this sweltering summer and we’re now set for the big season opener. There is a few changes for the 2019-20 season as part of The FA’s National League System restructuring, working towards a ‘Pure Pyramid’ for the 2020-21 season of 1-2-4-8-16-17. One interesting law being introduced across all levels of grassroots football is temporary dismissals also known as 'sin bins'. Players dissent will result in 10-minute temporary dismissals from the pitch. The mandatory rule change will be implemented up to Step 5 and Tier 3 and below in women's football. Perhaps the main headline in terms of promotion and relegation this season is there won’t be Super Play-offs at Step 3. Last season the four play-off winners faced off in two one-off finals for a place at Step 2. This year, only the bottom two in the National League North and South with be relegated which allows for the four champions and four play-off winners at Step 3 to be promoted. This is because from the 2020-21 season, Step 2 will be increasing from 22 clubs to 24, with four teams being relegated from each division. Relegation from Step 3 this season will see two teams go down from each division along with two third bottom clubs with the worst points-pergame ratio. This means, at Step 4, the seven champions and seven play-off winners will all be promoted. There is an eighth Step 4 division being introduced for the 2020-21 season and that will be run by the Northern Premier League – addressing some of the travelling challenges in the north of the country. There will be 24 clubs promoted from Step 5 to 4. The 14 champions across Step 5 will go up, with second and third place in the North West Counties, Northern League and Northern Counties East also automatically promoted. The remaining 11 second-place clubs will then be ranked on points-per-game and the four highest will be promoted. With the remaining seven second -placed clubs – a one-season scenario – will play-off with the seven bottom-placed clubs at Step 4 for a winner-takes-all game. There will be 76 clubs from Step 6 promoted to Step 5 – two clubs from each of the two South West Peninsula divisions and the top four from all other Step 6 divisions. The bottom two clubs in each of the 20 divisions are liable to relegation. From 2020-21, Step 5 will increase from 14 divisions to 16 and Step 6 will reduce from 20 to 17. The United Counties League and Combined Counties Leagues have been awarded an additional Step 5 division each. The West Midlands Regional and East Midlands Counties are due to lose their Step 6 status. The clubs within those divisions will remain at Step 6 subject to promotion and relegation on completion of the 2019-20 season. The Hellenic League will have its current two Step 6 divisions reduced to one which avoids operating with two divisions that are undersubscribed. Step 7 is also being aligned with County FAs to become the “pinnacle of county football”. So there you have it! Plenty of change for this season and beyond as the FA works towards a better Non-League structure. All the best for the season ahead and enjoy!
