Saturday 8th December 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:61 It took Gate just two minutes to open the scoring when Riccardo Egidi pounced on an Ashton Athletic defensive mistake. Egidi kept his composure when the ball fell to him in the six yard box to slot past keeper Martin Pearson. Gate struck again just two minutes later. Striker Ric Seear picked up the ball on the edge of the box before curling a shot low through a crowd of people into the bottom corner. The goals seemed to wake Ashton up who didn’t come into the game until the 15th minute. Adam Gilchrist had two golden chances to grab a goal back for his side but couldn’t convert either. First he shot wide before minutes later Ben Fletcher saves well down low before Gilchrist fires over the spilled ball. Dean Ing had the chance to add to Gate’s lead in the 24th minute but he headed over from a freekick inside the six yard box. Gate got the third goal they were craving on the half hour mark. Ryan Charnley curling the ball past Pearson in goal into the bottom corner to extend Gate’s lead. Adam Gilchrist finally got his goal on the stroke of half time for the visitors when he was left unmarked at the back post heading in past Ben Fletcher.
Half time: Squires Gate 3-1 Ashton Athletic Gate added a fourth early into the second half as the condition began to deteriate. Adam Summer sending in a corner into the near post decided the keeper and went straight into the goal. Summer was involved again four minutes later when his cross was turned into his own net by an Ashton defender. Gate had the chance to add another minutes later but Dean Ing’s Goal was ruled out for offside. His low drive was spilled by the keeper, Riccardo Egidi picked up the ball and chipped it to the back post where Dean Ing was waiting but his header was offside. Ashton came close in the 68th minute but their strike from outside the area hit the bar. Dave Rossall was in the right place to clear the ball. Ashton reduces the goal difference six minutes from time when Marcus Cusani beat Ben Fletcher. Gate finished off the scoring a minute before full time. Sub Finley Clarkson getting in on the goal scoring when he pounced on a defensive mistake to round the keeper and roll the ball into the empty net. The win moves Gate upto 8th in the league, Andy Clarkson’s side host Silsden next Saturday looking to go six games unbeaten.

ANDY WESTWELL Played for Chorley and Horwich RMI before joining Charnock in the 1995/96 season. Was a member of the side that won the West Lancashire League First Division title (Now the Premier Division) in 1997/98. After 129 appearances and 4 goals he retired in 1999 and joined Nigel Simmonds, as his assistant, at the now defunct Leyland Motors. Andy returned to Charnock in March 2001 as manager and has led the team to the most successful spell in the clubs history.
HISTORY OF THE GREENS In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. In 1957 they moved to the Preston & District League, where they have spent most of their time, apart from a brief flirtation with the Bolton Combination. In the Preston & District League they were soon amongst the honours, beating English Electric in 1957-58 to take the Guildhall Cup. Success also came in this competition in seasons 1963-64, 1968-69, and more recently in 1992-93. A number of league championships have also come their way, including winning the Premier Division in 1988-89. The 1967-68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001-2, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12. In 1993 the club moved to the West Lancashire League, and since then both the First and Second teams have gained promotion to the top division of their respective sections. They have also been successful in the West Lancashire League, winning the Premier Division Championship on seven occasions, in seasons 1997-98, 2003-04, 2008-09, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also won the Richardson Cup in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2013-14 and again in 2014-15. Numerous other honours have also come their way over the years including two recent Goldline Trophy victories at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium ,the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy in 2009, and the Northern Counties Senior Cup in 2012-13. The Reserve team have also been amongst the honours in the West Lancashire League. Following winning the Reserve Division championship in seasons 1996-97 and 1997-98, they completed a league and Houston Cup double in 2013-14, losing only one game in the entire season. The 2013-14 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the West Lancashire League with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles. The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League), they have an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league. The Academy team caters for younger players making the step up into adult football. The three senior teams are now referred to as the First team, Reserve team, and Academy team. A large number of junior teams also play in the Mid Lancs Colts Junior Football League and the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, with a youth team also playing in the Lancashire Sunday Football League. The club moved to Mossie Close in Charter Lane in 1968, after playing elsewhere in the village, and the adjoining club house was opened in 1988. A new ground has recently been developed on the opposite side of Charter Lane, known as Mossie Park, which now stages West Lancashire League games, with the new changing rooms having been opened in July 2011. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1.

HISTORY OF THE WHITCHURCH ALPORT Whitchurch Alport Football Club has just completed its 70th season having been formed in 1946.The club took its name from the nearby Alport Farm which was the home of local footballer, Coley Maddox, who lost his life during WWII. Alport started out in the Shrewsbury& District League, winning the title two years after their formation. The club spent a year in the Birmingham League before becoming one of the founder members of the Mid Cheshire League in 1948. Alport went on to enjoy some success in the 50’s and 60’s, reaching numerous Cup finals – one of which saw the club contest the Welsh Amateur Cup Final against Chirk AAA in front of 5,000 spectators at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. Arguably their finest hour though, came in the 1969-70 campaign when Whitchurch became the first side to take the League Championship outside of Cheshire. They also won the Shropshire County Cup but in pursuit of the treble, Kidsgrove Athletic denied them of unrivalled success with Whitchurch beaten 4-2 in the League Cup Final. Still, it didn’t stop the town’s Council from honouring the club with a Civic reception acknowledging the team’s outstanding achievements. Whitchurch Alport has always had strong links with Crewe Alexandra with a number of players having worn the red jerseys of both clubs. Peter Gowans, Billy McGinley, Willy Mailey, Richard Wainwright, Kevin Rafferty and Nick Longley are all fine examples of the association between Alport and the Alex. Local lad Stuart Mason played professionally for Wrexham, Liverpool, Crewe and Chester, while former Northern Ireland striker Jimmy Quinn began his playing career at Yockings Park. The Reds have always been blessed with a hard working committee but perhaps the most revered of them all was Bernard Painter who served Alport well in several different guises, before he passed away in the mid 90’s. Bernard was instrumental in the club’s formation so it’s only right that he’s still remembered with fondness up Black Park Road. Season 1973/74 saw the club achieve its highest honour to date by defeating Cardiff College 2-1 to become the first English side ever to win the Welsh Amateur Cup under the stewardship of the late Eddie Morris. But a decade later and Alport were in decline. A disastrous decision to field only local players resulted in backto-back bottom place finishes with barely a handful of wins across two successive campaigns. The committee approached Pete Wainwright – then manager of Kidsgrove Athletic – to try and persuade him to come to Yockings, and he set about abolishing the local-player-only policy. With his assistant Willy Mailey (ex-Everton and Crewe Alex goalkeeper), they set about transforming the club’s fortunes and Pete is still a regular visitor to the ground where he has served as player, manager, groundsman, secretary and Chairman, before having the title of Club President bestowed upon him. In 2009, Alport won the Shropshire County Cup at Shrewsbury Town’s stadium with a 1-0 win over Wellington Amateurs. But just four years later, the Reds resigned from the Cheshire League just a few short weeks before the campaign began, and there was a question mark against the club’s future. They survived – just - and took the decision to play in the Mercian Premier Division, but it was far from plain sailing from there. After a couple of seasons in the Mercian, there was an even bigger decision to be made: Alport had seen an opportunity to apply for North West Counties League status. Originally, their application to join NWCFL was declined but an appeal was successfully heard at Wembley Stadium - with the FA’s appeals committee overturning the original decision. There was much hard work ahead to make the dreams become reality though. The ground had to be brought up to NWCFL regulations, not to mention being able to field a team to be able to compete at Step 6. But in August 2015, Whitchurch finally stepped onto the field to compete at the highest level in their history, earning a 1-1 home draw with Rochdale Town in front of a crowd of 83, with Luke Woollam becoming the first player to score for the club as a NWCFL outfit. Initially, the Reds began brightly, losing only five of their first 15 league games. But a harsh winter saw interest wane and many of the better players decided they’d had enough. Alport limped over the line simply to complete their league fixtures, but a miserly 16 points from 34 league matches told its own story. On May 27th 2016, the club unveiled a joint management team of Luke Goddard and Carl Everall. They set about assembling a brand new youthful and energetic team, whilst appointing experienced coaching staff, in order to help turn around the club’s fortunes after the harshest inaugural season imaginable. On September 10th, WAFC competed in the FA Vase for the first time - losing narrowly after extra time at home to Wellington FC - and then, on Monday April 17th 2017, the club record attendance at Yockings Park was set when an incredible 670 spectators watched a vital league clash against Litherland REMYCA - 36 more than had attended a midweek home game against City of Liverpool 5 months earlier. Alport’s average gate last season was an astounding 236 with nearly 5,000 people watching the home games. Whitchurch were beaten semi-finalists in the play-offs during Goddard and Everall’s first season, and they will hope to be amongst the front runners again in 2017-18. On Saturday August 5th 2017, the club competed in the FA Cup for the first time in its 71 year history. Over a hundred fans followed the club to Walsall for an Extra Preliminary round tie and were overjoyed to see their team take the lead. Sadly, hosts Walsall Wood scored three times to advance into the next round, 3-1. Two days later, co-manager Everall announced his decision to take on the full time role as Head of Foundation at Crewe Alexandra Football Club – leaving Goddard in sole control of first team duties supported by his excellent backroom staff

AROUND THE LEAGUE Although Storm Deirdre did its best to affect the weekend fixtures, in the end 21 games were completed across the three divisions. The stand out match of the day was the top of the table clash in the Premier Division, with City of Liverpool extending their lead at the top of the table to six points after their 2-1 win over nearest challengers Congleton Town. Anthony Brown gave the Purps an early lead but Emini Adgebenro levelled for Town six minutes into the second half. However, parity was restored for only four minutes as Craig Cairns struck his 18th goal of the season to give the Purps a vital win. Runcorn Town remain in third place but are now 11 points adrift of top spot after being held to a 1-1 draw by Irlam at the Pavilions. Both goals came at the end of the first half, with Charlie Doyle's opener for Irlam being cancelled out by Harry Brazel in first half stoppage time. The foundations for Bootle's 3-2 win at Northwich Victoria were established in the opening 15 minutes, as the Bucks raced into a three goal lead thanks to two goals from Connor Millington and one from Ryan Cox. But a Joel Brownhill penalty early in the second half gave Vics hope, and when Jordan Darr struck a second with 20 minutes left, an exciting finale was guaranteed, but Bootle held on for a win that keeps them in fourth place. The highest scorers of the day in the division were Burscough, whose 5-0 win over bottom club Abbey Hey included doubles from Chad Whyte and Connor Finlayson, although Charnock Richard ran them close with a 4-0 win over Litherland REMYCA, with Charnock captain Carl Grimshaw notching his second hat trick of the season. At the bottom end of the table, Winsford United continued their recent good form with a David Short hat trick being the highlight of a fine 4-1 win at home to Padiham that moved them nine points clear of the drop zone. The Blues are now three points ahead of Hanley Town, who remain third from bottom after going down 1-0 to a Joshua Nicolson goal at Ashton Athletic. There was better news for West Didsbury & Chorlton, who got off to a winning start in David Powell's first game in charge with a 20 win at Whitchurch Alport, although they remain second from bottom of the table. However, the win, secured by first half goals from Jamie Coombes and Lee Gavin, means they are now just six points from safety. The game between Squires Gate and Silsden was abandoned after 40 minutes due to a power failure at the Brian Addison Stadium. In the First Division North, with Longridge Town and Carlisle City inactive, the opportunity to narrow the gap on the top two was picked up by Prestwich Heys, who are bnow six points off second place after their 2-1 win at Atherton LR. Two goals from Max White set Heys on the road to victory, although a late consolation from Aaron Rodgers set up an exciting finish. Michael Douglas was the start man in Lower Breck's win over Shelley, scoring four times in a 6-0 win that keeps Breck in fourth place, ahead of AFC Darwen on goal difference, who came from behind to win 3-2 at Daisy Hill. It turned out to be an exciting second half at New Sirs after a goalless opening 45 minutes, with Ashley Stott and Danny Warburton giving Daisy a two goal lead before Karl Turner, Corey Harrison and Samuel Knowles all struck in the space of ten minutes to give the visitors victory. Andrew Lewis and Anthony Lyons were on target from AFC Liverpool in the 2-0 win at AFC Blackpool, and a fine second half comeback from Nelson earned them a 4-2 win at home to Cleator Moor Celtic. Two goals from Tom Mahone had given Celtic a half time lead, but two goals from William Harris and one apiece from Mark Sharples and Alexander Grice steered the Admirals to victory. Bacup Borough were the highest scorers of the day, with Jordan Wilmore scoring twice in the 6-2 win at St Helens Town. The First Division South is headed by Rylands after Ste Boothman struck a second half hat trick in their 3-0 win at home to Alsager Town, but with just six points separating the top seven clubs, there are plenty of contenders breathing down the necks of the leaders. Wythenshawe Amateurs are a point behind in second place, following their 5-2 win at home to Stockport Town. The scoreline doesn't tell the full tale of an exciting game, as two goals from Kiarno Samms had given Town an early lead, before Daniel Egan (with a penalty) and Jordan Burton both struck in first half stoppage time to pull the Ammies level at the break. Joel Aikenhead then gave the home side the lead, but victory was only secured by stoppage time goals from Daniel Egan (another penalty) and Rory Fallon. A few miles away from Hollyhedge Park, the Ammies local rivals Wythenshawe Town didn't have such a good afternoon, going down 5-0 at home to FC Oswestry Town. David Howarth and Liam Parry both scored twice for the visitors in a convincing win, although Wythenshawe Town remain in fourth place, a point ahead of Stone Old Alleynians who came from behind to earn a draw at St Martins. Two goals from Karl Bailey had given Saints an early lead, but James Lee and Kyle Blake ensured that the visitors picked up a point. Vauxhall Motors lost a bit of ground on those above them, after a last gasp equaliser denied them all three points at home to Cheadle Town. Rhys Clooney had given Town a half time lead, and it looked like goals from Thomas Mitchell and David Webb would be enough to earn the points for the Motormen but Ben Brooks struck in stoppage time to secure a point from a 2-2 draw. Late equalisers were also a feature of the other two games, with Edward Driver's 89th minute goal earning New Mills a 1-1 draw at Cammell Laird 1907, and Cheadle Heath Nomads had to rely on an 88th minute leveller from Andrew Simpson to pick up a point from a 2-2 draw at home to Eccleshall, after two goals from Louis Downs had put the visitors ahead. In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid WE all thought we’d made progress since those dark and distant days when bananas were thrown at black players. Not so, it would seem, given the Spurs fan who launched a banana skin towards Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recently. Following that, the whole issue of race and prejudice in sport became a national topic of discussion last week when a group of Chelsea supporters were alleged to have racially abused England international Raheem Sterling during a Premier League clash against Manchester City. The deplorable footage captured by Sky cameras have given football, not just in England, an opportunity for introspection in how sleights against Black Asian and Minority Ethnic players or coaches is still so clear to the surface of football – and how racism can be tackled. And if you wonder what that has got to do with the Non-League game, I would suggest you might be a little complacent about potential racism at our levels. Recently, an Eastleigh fan was convicted of directing racist abuse at the end of last season towards the Ebbsfleet United goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore, who was also verbally abused at Boreham Wood last month, though Wood deny it was racially motivated. That incident, which saw Ashmore leap into the crowd to protest, is now being investigated by the FA. The encouraging thing about the Eastleigh episode is that fans around the offender reported him to the police, who took action in prosecuting, and the club acted decisively in banning him and condemning his behaviour. Fair play to all. My experience is that there still remains an issue with black, Asian and minority ethnic people in the game. They need representation in positions of influence, that would erode further lingering racism, subconscious or overt. Interviewing the Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson recently for the Non-League Paper, it occurred to me again just how few BAME people there are in board rooms. There has been progress in more being given managerial jobs, though still far from enough to be fair. The fuss over Sol Campbell getting the Macclesfield job – the club hoping that it won’t be back to the National League that he’s leading them – shows that the mere spotlight on them is unequal. It does seem that ethnic-heritage managers have to succeed more than their white counterparts if they are to get more jobs. Real progress will come when they are allowed to be ordinary and to fail, and be considered again, without the same levels of discussion about their abilities as there are now. What might help that cause is an increase in the number of BAME people in executive roles inside clubs and indeed governing bodies and League boards. Now, I accept that a lot of Non-League clubs represent rural or small town areas where there are either loW population, or even no, BAME communities. Where there are ethnic communities, however, it needs club administrations to be more open-minded and inclusive, and to work towards recruiting more BAME people in dug-outs, committees and board rooms to reflect the teams they are often putting out. Who knows, it might even draw more supporters from an often untapped market. Non-League can be traditional, even backward here and there. But it can also be bold and brave in some of its initiatives. This should be one of them.
