SQUIRES GATE FC CAN CONFIRM THAT CURRENT CHAIRMAN STUART HOPWOOD IS TO STEP DOWN AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SEASON.
Squires Gate FC can confirm that current chairman Stuart Hopwood is to step down at the end of the current season. Stuart is in his 11th season at the helm of the club having taken the role on and thrived in the position. Under his leadership Gate have become a well-respected NWCFL Premier Division side, one of the longest reigning in the league.
Stuart leaves the club with a much-improved ground, two new stands and a functional clubhouse. He leaves the club in a stable financial position with no outstanding debt and a bright future. A big highlight under Stuarts tenure would have been Gate’s progression in the FA Vase which saw us come narrowly close to going into the semi finals of the FA Vase. Only Hillingdon Borough stood in Gate’s way winning that game on the day 2-0. The club would of course like to put on record it’s eternal gratitude for the efforts Stuart has gone to for the benefit of the club over the years and wish him well in his retirement. We would also like to thank his daughter Emma, who helped run the bar and kitchen on match days. We hope that both will not be strangers in the coming season’s and welcome both to return to a game in the near future. At this moment in time the club are assessing several options but would welcome anybody interested in becoming chairman of the club or joining the committee to get in contact with Secretary John Maguire on 07881 767443.

WEST DIDSBURY 3 EVANGELINOS 36,84,86 SATURDAY, MARCH 18
Squires Gate cane bitterly close to recording a much needed win against West Didsbury & Chorlton but were denied by two goals on the last 10 minutes.
The game looked all set for a 1-1 draw after Gate had equalised at the start of the second half before a triple substitution injected life into the visitors. ATTENDANCE: 65 Gate were down to the bare bones in this game with seven first team players either GATE: injured or unavailable. In heavy conditions the football on show was still to a high standard with both SPEIGHT ,CARROLL,BAMBA, ROSSAL, teams still trying to play football on what was a worsening pitch. MOORHEAD, B,SEEAR,PENSWICK, WATERS,MOXON,NOBLET,SMITH West had the chance to open the scoring after 11 minutes with the first chance for either side. A deep cross was played into the back post where Joe Shaw met the WEST DIDSBURY: ball but poked it across goal. Gate were then saved when keeper Andy Speight did ASHwell to save, the follow up corner came to nothing. LEY,TINKER,BOTCHEY,BAYUNU,ROGERS,P Gate's best chance of the opening exchanges came when Charlie Waters took aim OTTS,MCGRATH,MASON,HENDERSON,SH from the edge of the box. The winger is still looking for his first goal for Gate but AW,EVANGELINOS fired this one well over the bar. Minutes later Gate would go close again but just missed that little bit of luck. 16 year old debutante Connor Smith did well to battle Reported By Mark Ashmore for the ball in midfield before finding Ben Seear but Seear's cross in was smothered by the keeper before Tarren Moxon could meet it. Player manager Danny Penswick had to put his body on the line a minute later, he Pictures By Albert Cooper dove in to block a shot from the edge of the box after Speight did well to punch clear. West would take the lead after 36 minutes through Nic Evangelinos. He showed a lovely touch in the box to evade keeper Andy Speight who had come to close down from his goal before tapping into the empty net. THE BRAIN ADDISON STADIUM
The second half would start perfectly for Gate who took the lead after one minute. Ben Seear was the first to pounce after the ball got stuck in the mud in the six yard box, he fired into the bottom corner to level the game. Gate would then go on to impress, battling hard and seeing alot of the ball. Unfortunately the game would change in the last 15 minutes. West were able to bring on three subs whose impact changed the game. The visitors ramped up the pressure and would make it count. The ball tapped in at the front post by Evangelinos for his second of the game. Just two minutes later and that man again would fire his hatrick goal. He picked the ball up from the edge of the pox and unleashed a lovely curling shot right into the bottom corner.

Squires Gate suffered another defeat on the road on Saturday after a goal after two minutes saw them make a nightmare start to the game.
SATURDAY, MARCH 25 ST LUKE’S BARTON STADIUM ATTENDANCE: 145 WINSFORD: GREEN,FOSTER,MIDDLETON,DUCKWORT H,HOWELL,ROTHWELL,STEELE.TAYLOR, COTTERELL,RILEY,JOHNSON
Winsford United took the lead in fortunate fashion. Gate keeper Joe Griffith very unlucky after saving the first shot with his foot the ball rebounded out to Kyle Riley who opened the scoring. Anywhere else on the pitch and Gate would have cleared the ball. Gate then went further behind after eight minutes when Dave Rossall gave away a penalty for a strong tackle in the box. Kyle Riley stepped up to the spot to fire past Griffith who got a hand to it.

Gates bad spell would continue when Winsford made it 3-0 on 20 minutes. Gate all but stopped playing after the ref had called for a throw in but the homeside continued. Taylor carried on down the left hand side and squared to Riley for him to extend Winsfords lead. Gate would grab a goal back just before half time. Tarren Moxon squaring the ball to Ben Seear who stroked the ball past the keeper just before half time. The second half saw Gate raise their standards and start competing more for the ball. Half chances for Waters and Noblet came for Gate but they just couldn't find that bit of luck. The next goal was key in this game and unfortunately for Gate it came for Winsford. Dave Rossall again sliding in to win the ball saw the referee award another penalty. Gate appealed that the tackle happened outside the box, but to no avail. Kyle Riley fired in the penalty for his third of the game. Gate would grab a goal back very late into added time. Jordan Casey on as a 80th minute sub fainted past defender Lee Duckworth before sliding the ball into the net on his debut.

INTRODUCING
CONGLETON TOWN Everything you need to know about today’s visitors This afternoon we welcome Congleton Town to The Brain Addison Stadium. Congleton Town are coming into today’s game with 10 wins out off 37 games and sitting just above gate in 16th Place. Congleton have played gate 31 times since 2002 Congleton have won 11 , Gate have won 8 and has been a massive 12 draw between the two teams. Today will be no expect as both teams are fighting for survival. Gate and Congleton have already played this season back in August where Congleton came out on top where there won 3-2 but once again there was goals.
Congleton come Into today’s game after a recent lost to Lancashire Cup winners Ashton Athletic 1-0 but they gave it there all, there also coming off a 3-3 draw to Barnoldswick Town. Congleton haven't won in 7 games and heading towards the foot off the table so they will need to look to they top goalscorer Declan Fletcher who has already scored 22 goals in 40 appearances and I have no doubt he be looking to add a few more and help Congleton In there survival bid.
THE BOSS: ANDY ALSTON Andy been with Congleton Town for many season but I think he will agree the second half to season hasn't gone as well as he would liked. Congleton Town are normally a top half finished but in recent season they have been dropping down the table bu Andy and his Coaching staff is hoping they will end the season on high and keep his team in the Division.
Andy also sometimes players for Congleton but this year he had enough in his squad for him to stay on touchline and giving his order and to keep a close eye on what he need to improve on going into the final games of the season.

Manager: Andy Alston Chairman: Steven Burgess Record attendance: 6,800 Website: www.congletontown.co.uk Twitter: @CongletonFC 2015/16 position: 6th
MIDDLE OF THE PARK Scott Sephton Position: Midfielder Apps: Goals: Sitting just in front of the back four, Scott protects the defence and shows calmness and quality on the ball. He's been at the club for the last couple of seasons and has always impressed. This season he's picked up six MOM awards. Scott will be hoping he can help the back line out todays and keep gate attack and he will also be looking to get forward as much as he can and see
THE FINISHER Declan Fletcher Position: Striker Apps: 40 Goals: 22 The big man has really thrived with Scott McGowan's departure from the club and had made that spot up top his own. A focal point for Town's attack, Fletcher leads the way with 22 goals in 40 games.
Declan is Congleton main man to causes a be threat for gates defence today and will be hoping to get pass and though on goals so he can add his 22 goals all ready this season.
HISTORY The club was formed in 1901 and joined the Crewe and District League, and were crowned champions in their first three seasons from 1901 –02 to 1903–04. In 1904–05 they finished in fifth place. They then joined the North Staffordshire and District League in the 1905–06 season finishing in third place. Up until the outbreak of World War I their highest league placing came in 1914–15 when they were runners-up. When the league resumed after the war Congleton spent one last season in the league, 1919– 20 finishing as league champions. they struggled most years at the higher level of the Northern Premier League and after finishing in last place in the 2000–01 season, they were relegated to the North West Counties Football League Division One. They did though reach the fourth round of the FA Trophy where they lost 6–2 to Worksop Town. The club remained in Division One which was renamed the Premier Division for the 2008–09 season. At the end of the 2008–09 season, Congleton finished fourth in the Premier Division, behind AFC Fylde, New Mills and Newcastle Town, with only the first placed side gaining promotion to the Northern Premier League. Regardless of where they had finished, Congleton would not have gained promotion because they did not submit a promotion application. At the end of the 2010–11 season joint managers Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg stepped down. Giuseppe "Joe" Paladino, ex-Wigan Athletic goalkeeper, who was assistant manager at Rossendale United at the end of last season was appointed at the beginning of the season, but some disappointing results and declining attendances saw his reign short-lived. He was replaced on 6 November 2011 by Dean Sibson, who took on the role of caretaker manager until
LAST TIME OUT
BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 3 CONGLETON TOWN 3 PREMIER DIVISION/THE SLIENTNGIHT STADIUM/SATURAY 25TH MARCH 2017 /ATT:141 Callum Jones was the hero as he headed in his first 2 goals for the club inside the final 20 minutes. There were 4 changes to the side that lost to Runcorn Linnets a week ago. In defence, it was Alston for Alston as Andy replaced Ben. Nathan Haynes’ work commitments meant Clevon Beadlemade his first appearance in a month. Up front, Ryan Hibbert replaced the suspended Brian Matthews while Dylan Sweeney replaced Mike Koral. The Bears started well and could have taken the lead inside 3 minutes when Declan Fletcher found Sweeney with a low cross. His shot was blocked however and Rick Bailey could only put the rebound over the bar. Barlick opened the scoring after 10 minutes with their first real chance of the game. Aaron Hollindrake took the ball past Alston and fired a low shot past Ross Heywood at his near post.

Congleton were close to equalising when Fletcher won the ball 30 yards from goal. He decided to have a go and his shot went only just over. He then latched onto a cross into the box but couldn't get his shot away. The ball moved on to Hibbert but his effort was covered by Jordan Gidley. Barlick then doubled their lead in the 36th minute. Callum Jones miscued a clearance and the ball went through for Harry Thompson to finish past Heywood. The Bears were back in the game 5 minutes before the break when Beadle was fouled just outside the box. Hibbert’s free-kick was fumbled by Gidley and Bailey was on hand to score his 5th goal of the season. Barlick were quickest out of the blocks in the second half and restored their two-goal lead inside 5 minutes. A cross to the back post was headed back across goal and fired in by the unmarked Kenneth Taylor.
VIEW FROM AWAY END In our regular feature, we ask away fans to give us an insight into their expectations for the season, about their time watching their club and some general football questions. This week, we caught up with Congleton Town fan Paul Brindley. We asked him what was his expectations was for the season, what was his dream scenario would be at Wembley and if he been Wembley before.
What are your expectations for the season What grounds that you enjoy visiting? after your 6th place finished last season?
Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score?
My expectations for the season when it began were to be up in the top area of the table and definitely the top 6 or possibly even higher
I haven't made it yet to watch a game at Squires Gate so that will be top of my list for next season as again work will stop me travelling to today's game
After a great start to the first half of the season. what are your expectations for the remaining games off the season and where do you hope you’re finished? What improvements do you think you have made to improve on last season’s finish? I felt we had built a squad that could challenge but from early on results suggested that it was going to be a very up and down season which is becoming all to familiar for all Congleton supporters and official. After a reasonable start results started to drop off from October which led to a very tough winter with some very disappointing results and ones which left us way off the pace in the division and after exiting the All cup competitions we were Concentrating on the league from as early as the 1st November. The season has produced some good memories and moments and some not so good What teams Did you enjoyed going up against or played this season? Teams I have enjoyed us coming up against are 1874 Northwich a local game with players who played for both clubs and they always have a large fan base both home and away. Also the game away against then was probably are best away performance and result of the season. Ashton Athletic as well as two of there management team are ex Congleton players and it's always nice to see them
Grounds I have enjoyed visiting - due to work my opportunities are limited in this area but I always enjoy visiting the grounds I haven't been to before and have this season crossed a few more off my list These being Hanley Town, Cammell Laird, Irlam and Barnton
Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there?
With my favourite two to visit probably being Ashton Athletic and AFC Darwen
I have visited the old Wembley stadium once which was to watch my other love Port Vale FC. Friendly clubs with good facilities in totally differ- They beat Stockport County in the final of the ent surroundings Auto glass Trophy many years ago. My dream is Which players do you think will be the big- to one day see Congleton play at the new Wembley and it wouldn't matter who they were playgest threat to gate? ing or what the competition was Biggest threat to Gate this afternoon I hope will be all the team but if I had to pick I would say our centre forward Declan Fletcher always a handful for the opposition and our captain Scott Sephton who controls the play from the midfield
What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Congleton Town? Most memorable game I have ever seen as a Town supporter is probably a Cheshire Senior Cup game a couple of years ago away at Altrincham who were a couple of leagues higher than us and we played at their ground against a very good team on a perfect pitch cut like a bowling green We went there with little chance and played amazingly and won the game 4-1 Our star man was our midfielder Jack Graham but that night the whole team were superb .It's one of those games that is still talked about now it was that good.
Are you looking forward to the last few months off the season and what do you expected to see from your team? The remainder of the season which including today’s game is a total of 5 games I would like us to get as many as points as possible to push us up towards a mid-table finish which will hopefully give us a starting block for next season
Prediction for tonight’s game? On to today's game, as ever it is hard to predict as that has been the story of Congletons season. However I think it could be an entertaining game but very tight 2-1 Congleton is my prediction

WE’VE MET BEFORE? SQUIRES GATE 1 CONGLETON TOWN 2 SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 2015 Gate made a good start to the game and could have gone ahead through Mark Buchan. Brett Ferguson made a good run down the left and crossed a superb ball into the box but Buchan couldn’t reach the cross. Billy McKenna found good space on the edge of the box to receive the ball from the throw in but his shot cannoned back off the crossbar the ball falling to Cummings but he couldn’t convert inside the six-yard box. Congleton’s first chance of the game came for their Number 8 but the midfielder pulled his shot wide of goal not testing Fletcher in net. Gate had the next chance but again the woodwork came to Congleton rescue. A good backwards header from Buchan found Cummings but his shot cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and out much to Gate’s dismay. Cummings had another chance soon after but again his shot cannoned back of the woodwork for the third time in the first half for Gate. With Congleton’s first real chance of the game they took the lead. Scott McGowan beating Gate’s offside trap to run clear and slot the ball under Ben Fletcher to open the scoring. Congleton would make Gates day worse when just a minute before half time they doubled the lead. The second half was as action packed for either team and mainly consisted of Gate trying to break Congleton’s defence down. But Gate struggled to create clear chances like they had in the first half. A change in system for Gate allowed them to attack the game more. Captain Danny Penswick had the chance to pull one back for Gate but his free kick was superbly saved by the Congleton keeper. Gate would find the break through with 7 minutes left to play. Mark Buchan rising highest to head the ball home and give Gate a renewed hope. Josh Westwood could have pulled it back to 22 but his header from the corner with 3 minutes to go was wide. But Congleton would defend well and see out the 2-1 victory. Gate unlucky on the day and should have left School Road with all 3 points.
CONGLETON TOWN 1 SQUIRES GATE 1 SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2016 Gate made a good start to the game and had all the possession in the opening five minutes. As early as three minutes Gate had their first chance but the Congleton defender did well to Shepard the ball out of play after Gate hit the home side in numbers. The home sides first chance came on six minutes but striker Brian Matthews fired wide of goal after doing well to bring the ball down. First Nathan Trout then Joe Noblet had chances for Gate but neither could capitalise. Trout sent the ball over the bar after the corner fell to him and Noblet half volleyed the ball from the edge of the area but that hit a Congleton defender and was cleared Gates couldn't capitalise on their good start and went behind after sixteen minutes. Gate allowed the home side too much time to pick a cross on the left hand side. He picked out the home sides number 10 who's header found the bottom corner to give The Bears the lead. Gate could have equalised ten minutes after. Good link up play between Tanser, Buchan and McKenna but Buchans low drive was well saved to the keepers left. Again McKenna was involved when he received the ball from Buchans hold up. But his cross was punched clear by the keeper. Gate had the last chance of the first half after good work from the front two again. But Tanser dragged his shot wide of the post. Gates first chance of the second half came from a Freekick. Josh Westwood with a great chance at the back post but he just could stretch far enough to reach the ball. Gate made a great improvement in the second half and Jake Higham could have equalised. But his shot was straight at the keeper. Gate wouldn't have to wait long after that to find the equaliser though. Nathan Trout picking up the ball in defence. He took a touch before clipping the ball towards the path of Tanser. The striker bought the ball down with class before beating his man and firing low past the keeper. The goal was well deserved by Gate who had battled well throughout the second half. Billy McKenna had a great chance to find both Tanser and Buchan in the box on 74 minutes. After working hard to win the ball back, he chose to shoot instead of crossing to find the two waiting.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY In our regular feature, we take a look back on this week in football history. `
SEGIO RAMOS ARRIVES
1986
On 30 March 1986, Real Madrid back and La Liga Best Defender Sergio Ramos was born in Sevilla. He started his professional career with Sevilla's B team in 2003 and joined the first team the following year, making 39 appearances. His strong performance that season led to him being named the 2005 La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year and attracted the interest of Real Madrid, who signed the then-19-year old center back that summer for €27M (funded in part by the €20M sale of forward Michael Owen to Newcastle). Despite joining a team full of Galácticos, Ramos jumped right into the starting line-up, with more than thirty league appearances in each full season since moving to Madrid. There, he won back-to-back La Liga titles in 2007 and 2008. He added another league title in 2012, as also won the Copa del Rey in 2011 and 2014. Ramos has also earned several individual accolades, including four straight La Liga Defender of the Year awards from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, he became the team captain after the departure of Iker Casillas. He is currently in his twelfth season with Real Madrid with over 500 appearances. He has also enjoyed success with Spain, winning two European Championships around the 2010 World Cup in which he started every match.
1998
THIS CUP RUNNETH OVER
On 4 April 1998, Paris Saint-Germain won their second Coupe de la Ligue, beating Bordeaux on penalties, 2-2 (4-2). It was the third straight final to go to a shootout. The teams met before a crowd of 77,700 at the Stade de France, Bordeaux started as the stronger side, with midfielder Johan Mocoud sending one shot off the post before burying a strike in the 30th minute. But the momentum shifted in PSG's favor by the end of the half, with one near miss and one shot cleared off the line. The Parisians finally drew level in the 80th minute, after a missed penalty rebounded to forward Marco Simone, who fired the ball into the net. A few minutes later, Simone nearly put PSG ahead, but his shot hit the bar. They did take the lead in extra time thanks to a header from their captain, Raí (pictured) (107'), but Bordeaux's Jean-Pierre Papin restored equality seven minutes later with a goal from a free kick. In the shootout, Bordeaux fell behind early, as PSG goalkeeper Vincent Fernandez blocked their first attempt, then Papin sent their second attempt wide. PSG, meanwhile, converted their first four, which was enough to secure the cup without the need for a fifth kick.
ENOUGH CARDS FOR A ROUND OF POKER On 7 April 2001, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich battled to a 1-1 league draw that included a total of fourteen yellow cards and three ejections. The match was part of a tight title race--Bayern were in first, just one point clear of second-place Dortmund, who would claim the top spot with a win in front of their home supporters. The visitors started strongly, with forward Roque Santa Cruz putting them ahead with a 6th-minute strike. Shortly afterward, the contest degenerated into a brutish display that held little resemblance to a football match. Bayern were the main culprits, accumulating a total of six yellow cards before the break, including two for left back Bixente Lizarazu, who was ejected in the 35th minute. With Bayern a man down, Dortmund equalized in the 52nd minute with a goal from striker Fredi Bobic. Just three minutes later, Bayern went down to nine men as midfielder and captain Stefan Effenberg (pictured, from a different match) received a straight red, but the hosts could not capitalize on their numerical advantage and the game ended 1-1. By that time, Dortmund had a player of their own sent off, with right back Evanilson receiving a straight red in the 90th minute. In all, the referee showed ten yellows and two reds to Bayern, and two yellows and a red to Dortmund, for a league single-match record total of 15 cards. Bayern went on to win the league that year, while Dortmund finished in third.

10 MEN GATE FIGHT BACK TO GRAB ALL THREE POINTS AT WIGAN ROBIN PARK Wigan Robin Park 2 Squires Gate 3 Saturday 12th April 2014
Squires Gate travelled to Wigan Robin Park in what was another important game in their quest for Premier League survival. Having battled well against league leaders Norton United the week before, Squires Gate arrived in Wigan full of determination, and it was bottom side Wigan who started the brighter side, a free kick just outside the area was saved confidently by the returning Ben Fletcher, and again it was Gate who had the best chance of the opening 15 minutes when a clever ball played over the top to Jack Sowerby who saw his shot tipped round the post. At nearly 17 Minutes on the clock and a clearance from the Squires Gate defence was returned to the pitch quickly, this left two Gate defenders out of position allowing Stephen Milne to finish well for the home side on 17 minutes, It was again the home side who had the next talking point, a ball played through the middle of the Gate defence resulted in keeper Fletcher bringing down the Wigan attacker, Fletcher was given a straight red card and the resulting penalty was converted past stand in goalkeeper Andy Richards by Philip Howard on the 27th minute. Into the second half and both teams looked equal with most of the play being battled for in both midfields. It wasn't until the 66th minute that the breakthrough came, a foul outside the box by a Wigan defender allowed the freekick to be delivered, the freekick met the head of one of the Wigan defenders resulting in an own goal. At 2-1 the goal seemed to raise the morale of the away side who went back on the attack. The introduction of Billy Mckenna from the bench offered another attacking threat, the striker looking full of confidence was bought down right in the corner of the pitch, but the resulting free-kick couldn't find a man in blue. It was Mckenna again whose clever run sent him through, but seemingly the keeper had it under control, until a poor touch and re-bound from the keeper allowed Mckenna one on one to finish well and slotted the equalising ball home on the 74th minute. Gate full now of confidence, having come from 2 -0 down with just 10 men carried on attacking looking for the three points, and that man Billy Mckenna again on the right who whipped in a perfect cross, which was met by the head of sub James Washburn to give Gate the lead this time on 90 minutes.

Squires Gate Under’s 13 Makes Cup Final After a good day of youth team games at The Brian Addison Stadium, including wins for Foxhall Under 18's and Fleetwood Juniors Under 18's, it was Squires Gate Under 13's who stole the show. The say save the best till last and that's just how it happened on Sunday. Squires Gate Under 13's are through to the Hogan Cup Under 13's final after an impressive 5-0 win over Poulton on Sunday afternoon. Nick Grindley's youngsters all performed out their skin to secure their place in the final against a strong Poulton team. At this moment in time the finals don't yet have a confirmed home but as soon as we know we'll let you know so you can support Gate's Under 13's in their final. A big thank you to Steve Mclellan for photos from Gate's victory, you can view them in the 'Photo' tab on the website SEPTEMBER 2016 Sun 04
