DANIEL PENSWICK “OUR FORM HASN’T BEEN GREAT RECENTLY BUT I’VE SEEN SOME REALLY POSTIVE SIGNS IN OUR PERFORMANCES AND THINK WE’RE CLOSE TO GETTING IT RIGHT” Good afternoon everyone,
Today we welcome Hanley Town to the Royal British Legion Stadium as we return to league action. First of all, I would like to welcome their players, committee and supporters to Squires Gate and I hope you all have a safe journey home. Hanley have had a great start to life in the Premier Division and will be looking to continue that today. They currently sit 8th in the league and have picked up 8 wins already this season, and that is impressive and shows the signs that they are a good organised side who are hard to beat. Having already played Hanley this season we have some understanding of how they want to play and I'm hoping our shape can create chances again. Our visit there a couple of weeks back ended in a 4-2 defeat and we were definitely up against a good set of players.
“THEY ARE A GOOD ORGANISED SIDE WHO WILL BE HARD TO BEAT” It has been a tough month for us, having played 3 very good sides in Atherton Colls, Runcorn Town and then Chorley in the Lancashire Cup. However, I was very happy with the way we played on Tuesday and we played fantastically well as a team. It became clear towards the end of the game that Chorley had more experience, more energy and knew how to win games at this level. The best of luck to them in the next round, it was great for us to have the chance to go up against a side like Chorley and to be able to test ourselves.
“CHORLEY HAD MORE EXPERIENCE, MORE ENERGY AND KNEW HOW TO WIN GAMES AT THIS LEVEL” Our form hasn't been great recently but I've seen some really positive signs in our performances and think we're very close to getting it right. We have 4 games between now and the end of the month to try and turn results around but we will take every game as it comes as we can only beat what’s in front of us. I’ve got my own targets and aims for the upcoming games so I will be hoping that we can achieve them and get back on track.
“I’VE SEEN SOME REALLY POSITIVE SIGNS IN OUR PERFORMANCES” I'm hoping it's going to be a cracker and we can get a valuable 3 points. Up the Gate

Report by Mark Ashmore Squires Gate hosted Vanarama North high fliers Chorley on Tuesday night who had won the competition 17 times and were the holders this time round. Both teams started the game fairly evenly with Gate being flagged offside early on through Dawson. Gate midfielder Mike Hall then pulled off a last ditch tackle down the other end to deny a clear scoring chance. Chorley were having the majority of possession in the first half and really should have scored after 13 minutes. Striker Marcus Carver walking away with his head in his hands as he fired wide of the goal with a sliced shot. Brett Dawson did well to close down the keeper on 26 minutes to force a mistake. Unfortunately for Gate he couldn't release the odd quick enough and Chorley cleared the ball. Although Chorley had plenty of possession, Gate really limited them to what they could create. Chorley had a soft penalty appeal turned down just before the half time break. The right back went down under Ben Seear's challenger but the referee waved away the appeals. Gate started the second half and had a couple of half chances on the break. Chorley got themselves in early on aswell again down the left hand side but Dave Rossall did well to cut out the ball at the near post. The follow up corner ended up in Ben Fletchers arms. Jamie Gibson sparked life into Gate on 60 minutes when he went on a mazy run. He jinked in and out of the Chorley defence but his ball through to Dawson was flagged for offside. The turning point came on 66 minutes when Gate opened the scoring. A corner sent in by Joe Noblet found the head of Ryan Riley who powered his header past Caunce to give Gate the lead! Unfortunately though Chorley hit back nearly straight from kick off. The ball scrambled in by defender Daniel Cowan after Gate failed to clear their lines. Gates night would get worse with 11 minutes left to play Chorley added a second. A corner ball fired into the back post found Adam Roscoe who smashed the ball in. Although Gate bought both Ryan Tanser and Ric Seear on to try and grab another goal Chorley saw the game out and go through to the next round.

WE’VE MET BEFORE? HANLEY TOWN 4 SQUIRES GATE 2 SATTURDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2016 Gate's plans were rocked coming into the game with no recognised keeper available, defender Ben Seeardeputised in goal. The homeside would make a good start to the game and took the lead after nine minutes. A freekick into the back post was knocked down into the six yard box and scrambled in by Daniel Cope. To say the game was slowed down by the ref would be an understatement. Both teams kept conceding things that wouldnt even be a foul in other games leading to lots of freekicks in the first half. Luckily, either team couldn't make the most of the freekicks throughout the game. Hanley Town could have added a second after 24 minutes. A long goal kick got in behind Gate but Ben Seear did well to to tip the shot over. Two minutes later though and Hanley would grab a second. The ball sent through the middle found Cope. Ben Seear in net did well to stop the ball but couldn't keep hold of it allowing Sean Mountfold an easy tap in. Gate would grab a goal of their own on 30 minutes. Mark Thornber playing a lovely ball down the wing to Brett Dawson who burst into the box with pace to delicately chip the ball over the keeper. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't build any momentum from the goal before half time to get a second. The homeside grabbed themselves a third goal just two minutes into the second half. A lovely bit of movement down the right found Cope in the middle unmarked and with Gate standing off him he fired home for his second of the game.
The homeside were then awarded a penalty on 62 minutes for what looked like handball by Paul Alexander. Stand in keeper Ben Seear would produce a moment he'd never forget when he dived the right way to his right to pull off a superb save that any keeper would be proud of. After one Seear's good work down one end Gate almost grabbed a goal back down the other through Ric. He reached Paul Alexander's cross in but just headed wide. Gate introduced Ryan Riley who had an instant impact on 80 minutes. He drove forward from midfield unchallenged and found Dawson but his cross was ruled to have crossed the line and gone out. The homeside were then reduced to 10 men. A straight red card for a kick out. Gate would then make that man advantage pay when they grabbed another goal back. Sub Mark Buchan cutting back inside and crossing to the back post to find Ric Seear who powered a header in. Gate would then concede late on. A poor clearance by the otherwise faultless Ben Seear fell straight to their midfielder who passed the ball into Cope's feet for him to score his hatrick.

FA Vasr Progression: Frist Round (1987-1988)
The club's roots can be traced as far back as the mid to late 1880s and seemed to have folded in 1912. The new Hanley Town were formed in 1966 and ten years later they joined the Mid Cheshire League playing in the Second Division. This led to one of the club's most successful periods. The club gained promotion to the First Division of the Mid Cheshire League in 1978 and in 1982 they were League Champions, after losing just 2 of their 30 games. However, that success was hard to follow and despite two consecutive thirdplaced finishes in 1987 and 1988, Town were on the slide. The lowest point came in 1994 when the club were relegated back to the Second Division of the Mid Cheshire League after winning just once all season
The next six years saw steady improvement from the club and in 2003 they were beaten in the Final of the Midland League Cup by Norton Adderley Green. Success was finally achieved under the management team of David Price and Darren Stairs in 2004–05. Hanley Town completed a remarkable treble of the League Championship, the League Cup and the Staffordshire F.A. Vase. 2005–06 saw the Midland League merge with the Staffordshire County League and the combined league became known as the Staffordshire County Senior League. However, the name change didn't stop Hanley Town claiming their second consecutive title, losing just once. There was disappointment though, in the shape of the Leek and Moorland Cup, where Hanley were defeated 4–2 by Ball Haye Green in the final.
LAST TIME OUT
HANLEY TOWN 1 BOOTLE 7 SATURDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2016/ABBEY LANE/NORTH WEST COUNITES PREIMER DIVISON In the end, it was as convincing and comprehensive as it gets. But in some ways it was hardly surprising. Joe Doran’s side came into their game against Hanley Town on Saturday on the back of a comprehensive 6-0 win over Ashton Athletic in midweek. But Joe Doran’s side went one better here, by smashing seven past a helpless Hanley to move them up to third in the league table and continue their rampant goal scoring run, which now stands at 22 in their last five games. Doran’s side clearly full of confidence, started brightly and took a deserved lead after just twenty minutes. Ryan Cox was tripped inside the Hanley box – with the referee having little hesitation in pointing to the spot. Bucks Captain Liam Loughlin stepped up and coolly found the bottom right hand corner of the net. Ten minutes later and it was 2-0 with new recruit Paul Woolcott collecting his first for his new club. The former Skelmersdale United midfielder collected Cox’s pass before firing an unstoppable effort into the top corner of the net. Three minutes before the half time interval, things got even better for the Bucks as they made it 3-0 thanks to prolific front man Ryan Cox. The forward broke clear down the left before cutting inside and letting fly with an effort that flew past the onrushing Town goalkeeper and into the net.

Less than a minute later and things got even better for the Bucks as they all but sealed the three points with Cox collect his second of the afternoon. Having collected the ball in his own half Cox raced clear before coolly slotting the ball home. A minute into the second half, and the Bucks continued their rout with Cox completing his hat-trick. Ste Jones released his strike partner with a lovely through ball, and once Cox was away there really was only going to be one outcome. And soon enough, the ball landed in the back of the Hanley net with Cox once again showing the type of composure which has helped him net nineteen times this season. Another man who is scoring for fun recently has been Carl Peers and the midfielder continued his impressive run by collecting the Bucks sixth of the afternoon. Kieran Haligan, like he so often does, advanced down the right before pulling the ball back to Peers to side foot into the net. The goal scoring continued on the hour mark, but this time it was at the other end of the pitch with Hanley notching a mere consolation. The unmarked Jonathan Higham heading home at the back post after connecting with Oliver Edwards’ cross. Ten minutes later, and the hosts were offered another change to narrow the deficit when they were awarded a penalty. But Ryan Jones superbly pushed Higham’s effort away after diving low to his left. Not to be outdone, the Bucks restored their six goal advantage with five minutes of normal time remaining. Some neat football around the Hanley box eventually saw Josh Hamilton find the bottom corner of the net with a side-footed finish. The game would end on a sour note for the Bucks though, as captain Liam Loughlin saw red after volleying the ball at Higham – following the Hanley goal scorers shocking challenge on Hamilton, which also saw him see red.
DREAM XI In a new feature, we are going to ask Squires Gate fans and committee members, who would make their dream team of players that they have seen play live. This week, Assistant manager Brian Penswick tells us who he would have in his dream XI. He picks World Cup winner Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton he also choose 3 ex Blackpool players in John Burridge, Gary Parkinson and Kenny Samson. Who would make your team? Get in touch!
JOHN BURRIDGE (BUDGIE)
BLACKPOOL
Played for Blackpool in early 70’s completely mad, played squash against him few times. Warm up was a handstand walk.
GARY PARKINSON
BLACKPOOL
“Purely sentimental reason, he was in charge when I worked at Blackpool”
TERRY BUTCHER
COVENTRY CITY
“With Booby Moore in the team the two of them are just the perfect to partnership at the back”
BOBBY MOORE
ENGLAND
“Him and terry will just be the perfect partnership at the back. Two England legends would surely have what it takes to keep out whatever anyone else has to offer. I’d like to see someone pick a better pairing than them two”
KENNY SAMSON
BLACKPOOL
“The best attacking full back, could defend as well which is always a bonus”
PAUL GASCOIGNE
ENGLAND
“Just a genius”
ALAN SUDDICK
BLACKPOOL
“The king of Bloomfield Road had better right foot than David Beckham.”
TONY GREEN “What a player till injury cut it shot”
GEORGE BEST
MANCHESTER UNITED
“Well, there was nothing that Best couldn’t do with the ball. He is one of the legends of the game and he will always be remembered for his masterclasses. He would still be able to make it in the modern game I think, and could you imagine how much he would be worth nowadays?”
BOBBY CHARLTON
ENGLAND
“He has experience, and he’s won the World Cup. Another player who could hit the ball sweetly and it would always hit the back of the net. Unbelievable player. ”
TOMMY HUTCHINSON “Proven goal scorer at every standard.”

OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks include Joshua Thorpe who is looked soiled at back for Hanley so far this season, it also include Angelo Enrico who is a very dangerous winger going forward and could case gate some problems today. He last pick was Dan cope he is Hanley leading goal scorer so far this season and will be a bit off a handful form gate defence and Goalkeeper in todays game.
JOSHUA THORPE The centre back looked solid when Gate last faced Hanley. Him and Stair had formed a somewhat solid looking partnership.
ANGELO ENRICO
DAN COPE
The winger looks dangerous eve- The forward is Hanley's top goal ry time he goes forward and is scorer so far this season with 15 always available to revive the goals in 21 games. ball or an option to go long down the touchline.
He's made 22 appearances so far picking up four MOM awards. He's made 25 appearances so far this season, scoring 7 goals and picking up 5 MOM awards.
Dean has been at Hanley now for a few season and helps them grain Promotion from the first division. Dean has bought in a few new faces this season and hoping the new face can hep Hanley stay in division. Hanley and dean have has a brilliant start to the season so fat and will be hoping to remain this good quality alll season and first high as possible. Hanley know gate has got quality after the 5-2 win earlier in the season and know gate will be no push over ad will give them good run out and will be a good game off football.
He scored a hatrick when we last faced Hanley and will likely be a threat again.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. It has been 102 years since the start of World War 1, and here at Squires Gate we have 3 members who do their bit every year. Albert Cooper, Spencer Leader and Bill White all help with the poppy appeal selling them in Lytham St Annes. Why the poppy? Scarlet corn poppies grow naturally in conditions of earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought by the Napoleonlic wars of the early 1800s, transformed bare land into fields of red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. The Royal British Legion distribute poppies every year to their poppy appeal and are a charity who provide financial, social and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!
THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY…. In our regular feature, we take a look back at the past week in football history from all around the world.
THE DEATH OF ROBERT ENKE
2009
On 10 November 2009, after years of battling with depression, German goalkeeper Robert Enke committed suicide. He was 32 years old. Enke started his professional career in 1995 with his hometown club, Carl Zeiss Jena, and later spent time with Borussia Mönchengladbach (1996-99), Benfica (19992002), and Barcelona (2002-04, including loan spells with Fenerbahçe and Tenerife), before joining Hannover 96 in 2004.
He made his first appearance for the German national team in 1997, but spent most of his international career behind Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann. When Lehmann retired in 2008, Enke became Germany's starting keeper, but was sidelined by injuries, including a bacterial infection that forced him to miss matches in September and October 2009. Nevertheless, before his death that November, he was the leading candidate to start for Germany in the 2010 World Cup.
Enke killed himself by standing in front of a train on a ground level crossing. He left a note, though the contents have never been disclosed publicly. Afterward, it was revealed that he had suffered from depression for many years, prompted in part by the death of his 2-year old daughter in 2006. He was survived by his wife Teresa and adopted daughter Leila
1996
JUST WHEN YOU THINK IT CAN’T GET ANY WORSE
On 9 November 1996, Liechtenstein hosted Macedonia in a World Cup qualifier that ended up setting a record for both teams. It was the fourth match of the campaign for both of them, including a previous meeting that resulted in a 3-0 win for Macedonia in Skopje. But a 1-1 draw with Iceland and a 3-0 loss to Ireland left Macedonia struggling for points, while Liechtenstein had lost their other two matches to Ireland (0-5) and Lithuania (2-1). Playing before a crowd of 2,700 at the Sportpark Eschen-Mauren, it took only eight minutes for Macedonia to open the scoring with a goal from forward Dejvi Glavevski (pictured). He doubled the lead four minutes later and by the break, the visitors were up by six. They stretched the lead to nine (including a third goal from Glavevski) before Liechtenstein finally got a goal from midfielder Franz Schädler in the 78th minute, then Macedonia added two more in the 87th and 90th minutes. The final scoreline of 1-11 remains Macedonia's record victory and Liechtenstein's record defeat.
Liechtenstein went on to lose all 10 of their qualification matches, finishing at the bottom of the group with no points and a goal differential of -49. Macedonia fared slightly better, with a record of four wins, one draw, and five losses, but also failed to qualify for the World Cup.
RUUD RULES THE GALAXY
2007
On 8 November 2007, Ruud Gullit took over as head coach of the LA Galaxy, becoming the highest-paid manager in MLS history. But his tenure lasted just over nine months. Gullit, the 1987 Ballon d'Or winner who starred as a player for PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan, had a checkered past as a manager, with short spells at Chelsea (1996-98), Newcastle (1998-99), and Feyenoord (2004-05) all ending in disappointment. He had been out of football for two years before joining the Galaxy, noting in his initial press conference that "Just a week ago I was on holiday in the Dominican Republic when I was asked if I would like this job, so it's happened very quickly." Nevertheless, LA signed him to a 3-year contract worth $2 million per year, the highest salary of any MLS manager up to that point. It did not take long for things to start falling apart. In January 2008, on Gullit's personal recommendation, the Galaxy signed Newcastle left back Celestine Babayaro to a 3-year deal. But the club waived him two months later after the Nigerian international proved unable or unwilling to adapt to his new surroundings. He had made only one appearance for the Galaxy, a preseason friendly against FC Seoul in which he conceded a penalty and received a yellow card in only 45 minutes of playing time. Gullit's relationship with other players--including Abel Xavier, Peter Vagenas, and star Landon Donovan--soured and the club's performances began to suffer as well. They endured a seven-match winless streak that culminated with Gullit's resignation on 11 August 2008. In January 2011, Gullit returned to management, signing a 1.5-year contract with Russian Premier League club Terek Grozny, but was sacked just six months later after winning only three matches.

GATE TAKE ALL 3 POINTS DEPSITE BOOTLES ONSLAUGHT SQUIRES GATE 1 BOOTLE 0 Saturday 15th November 2014 Bootle were Gate’s latest guests to the Royal British Legion Stadium in this North West Counties Premier League fixture. Gate went into the game without the services of top scorer Jack Sowerby ‘‘Sowers’’ who signed for neighbours Fleetwood Town on Friday. The 19 year old was the league’s leading top goal scorer with 17 goals in 17 games so far this season in the NWCFL Premier Division. Prior to the game, Gate sat in 12th position in the league on 27 points with the opponents Bootle in 10th position on 28 points. A win for Gate against Bootle and a defeat for Maine Road away to Stockport Sports would see Gate leapfrog Bootle and propel them into the top ten. Before welcoming Bootle, Gate had only lost once at home all season with Bootle very indifferent on the road, losing four and winning four, so very difficult to predict how they would perform. Both Gate and Bootle lost their last games 4-0 and 2-1 to Ashton Athletic and West Didsbury & Chorlton respectively, so were both in need of victory to get their season back up and running.
Gate made three changes to the starting line-up with Jake Forshaw, Alexander McKendrick and Mark Buchan all coming in for Rob Henry, Brett Ferguson and the recently departed Jack Sowerby. There were places on the bench for new players Keifer Cunningham and striker James Edmonds. Gate started the game the brighter of the two and within just two minutes of the game Jake Forshaw beat his man on the edge of the box after capitalising on a poor goalkeeping clearance, but saw his curling effort rebound off the post. Gate were definitely in the mood and in the 10th minute they could have scored the opener as Harry Dunn’s delicious cross met Alex Murphy’s head but his effort was scrambled off the line denying a certain goal. Bootle’s first meaningful attack came in 17th minute when Michael Roberts’s first attempt on goal deflected narrowly wide. Gate’s Mark Buchanwas the next closest to breaking the deadlock as he brought an instinctive save from the legs of the opposing keeper Joshua Clark. The last chance of the first half came to the visitors as a nice interchange between Michael Roberts and Kurt Sherlock put in Christopher Tyson in the area but his shot went well wide. As the first half drew to a close it was the away side who ended the strongest. It was Gate who came closest just after the break as Josh Westwood sent his header just the wrong side of the post and soon after Bootle went straight down the other end and had three shots saved on the line as Gate managed to clear a goalmouth scramble. Gate needed to respond and did just that in the 53rd minute as Alex Murphy scored directly from a low whipped free-kick, which was unchallenged by anybody in the box. The next turning point in the match was in the 70th minute when Bootle felt they had a strong case for a penalty but the referee waved it away. Gate almost doubled their in the 75th minute as Murphy picked up the ball outside the box and fired a shot which the keeper Clark parried up onto the post, but was quickly smothered by the keeper.
Two minutes later Gate thought that they had sealed the win with sub debutant James Edmonds putting the ball into the back of the net after a good cross from Jake Forshaw. However it was controversially ruled out for offside. Edmonds then came close again to opening his Gate account as he connected with an Alex Murphy cross but his header hit the foot of the post. In the last moments of the game with Bootle committing men forward in search of an equaliser Gate found pockets of space in the Bootle defence which they attempted to exploit. Gate continued to create numerous chances and the best came when Jack Cook ran through the Bootle defence but shot instead of squaring the ball to James Edmonds to seal the win. His shot was first saved by goalkeeper Clark and then by the opposing defender who threw himself at the ball to deny a certain goal. This was the last action of the game and Gate saw it out to get back to winning ways and leapfrog Bootle in the table.

BOOTLE 17.12.16 WHO’S IN CHARGE? Joe Duran
GROUND DELTA TAXI STADUIM LAST SEASON
BOOTLE 5 SQUIRES GATE 1 The home side lined up with a young energetic looking side and didn’t take long to get into the game. It took them just 5 minutes to find a way though Gates backline and open the scoring. Josh Hamilton finding his way into the box unmarked to finish well past Fletcher. Bootle looked lively and were first to most lose balls and kept looking to launch a quick attack each time they got the ball. Gates first real chance came down the right hand side with Mckenna his run was found by Penswick but Mckenna’s cross was cleared at the near post. Josh Kay had a chance shortly after when he was found in the middle of the six-yard box but his volley was straight at the keepers chest who did well to quickly clear the ball. Josh Westwood was the next to take aim but like Kay previously his volley was blocked this time by the face of his own player Mark Buchan. Bootle made it two when a long ball over the top caught Gates defence out and Peterson made it two. The homeside looked ever confident with a two-goal lead and made it three after 42 minutes. The ball bobbled up onto the hand of Alex Colquhoun who was judged to have deliberately handled the ball Hamilton converting from the spot to make it three before half time. Gates first chance of the second half came from manager Danny Penswick. He lined up the free kick perfectly but the home keeper did magnificently to save the shot. Gate pulled a goal back after Ash Rowley spotted the home keeper of his line. He lined up the shot from out side the box and with the goalkeeper on the floor from Buchan’s challenge, the ball bounced over the line and in. Gate tried to attack the home side but couldn’t find the fluidity they had on Wednesday night and struggled to add to the one goal they had. Bootle were ruthless in Gates box and made it 4 on 73 minutes. Right back Ste Rothwell somehow found himself inside the box to fire to Fletcher’s left and score. Unfortunately that would be the defender’s last act as a couple of minutes later he would dislocate his knee. Substitue Dom Marie rounded off the scoring for the game a couple of minutes
