LUKE EVANS I am pleased to be welcoming you all to our home game as we face Litherland Remyca. We are delighted to be back playing at home after suffering back to back defeats in two very tough away games. In both games we were gutted to come away with nothing as we felt in both games we deserved at least a point but it wasn’t to be. We have found a way of playing that we are happy with and we are finding a level of consistency with performances albeit not always with results. For me at this time of the season the level of performance is key to our progression as a group. We have to keep pushing ourselves as there is still so much to play for. Not only points but the players are also playing in order to be in our plans for next season and be part of the the great things this club is planning to do. If you look at the league table and say we have nothing to play for I may as well bring players like Mark Ganley off his doughnut stall and into the first 11. We have to show a level of professionalism and also pride to give 100% until the seasons end. We know that today’s game will be tough but I feel we can beat anyone in this division and if we play to the levels that we can we will be ok. Today marks the last game for Gary Pett we have loved having Gal back and we wish him well for the future. In other news Matt Farnworth has also told us that he will miss the last month of the season as he moves down to London with work. I hope Farny can stay in football in some capacity as Squires Gate is the third club that we have worked at together and he has been brilliant at every single one. He gets a hard time from me as I demand his best every time but I will be genuinely gutted to see him go as not only is he a very good player but also a great guy. We all wish him well. Lastly, our goalkeeper Jordan and his beautiful partner Bekki are expecting their first child and the newborn could not ask for better parents than these two. Now with all that out of the way let’s get on with the football cheer the lads on to three points and enjoy the game! Luke

Our mid-long term aims are to work with local councils to identify a site and build a community facility for all sides under the REMYCA banner as well as the local area. In 2013, the Management Committee of REMYCA began exploring the potential to grow and develop the club. The aim is for a sustainable club - a community based model offering football opportunity with good coaching to all ages from seven years upwards. The first stage of the new development plan was to add Litherland to the club name so as to identify with the local area and enhance the community ethos of the club. REMYCA vs City of Liverpool The printer was churning out team sheets, the bottle bar was selling real ales and craft beers by the dozen, and the choice of Chicken Curry or Scouse stew for lunch, was a tough choice. There was an infectious buzz about the place helped by the opposition being City of Liverpool.

From the archive this week, we look back to a game from March 2019, when Litherland REMYCA faced City of Liverpool which bought in a crowd of over 570 fans! Laurence Reade writes about his visit on his blog laurencereade.com so if you want to read more about his travels, take a look at his ground hopping website!

There’s is an interesting case. Playing in purple as a mixture of the red of Liverpool and the blue of Everton, they were set up in 2015 to be the only fan-owned non-league club playing within Liverpool’s boundaries. The set-up is very similar to FC United of Manchester but instead of the formation being anti something specific, FCUM’s being the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United, here its the more general removal of the game from its working class roots.

Whatever their reasons, they certainly draw a crowd, GroundhopUK have been involved in three 500-plus crowds that I can recall. There was Bridlington on the 2013 hop that drew 1,569, this and Sawtry on the Peterborough & District Hop that drew 534. DAVE EVANS & NICK GERRARD

Speaking to The Gate from Litherland REMYCA is secretary Dave Evans and club photographer Nick Gerrard. They talk about what they love about non league footy, why they are involved with REMYCA, the 3 Premier League players they would bring to the club and their prediction for today’s game. First of all, what got you into football and REMYCA? DE:I used to play for the reserves at REMYCA. When I stopped playing, I managed the reserves and then went onto manage the first team. I had a break from REMYCA for a while and then returned to manage the youth team and again the first team. Now I am club secretary. NG: My family we’re all Liverpool supporters so naturally my allegiance went with the Reds. When I was about 14 , I started going to the match with my mates from school. On Saturdays we played snooker in the morning and in the afternoon if we where at home we went to watch Liverpool on the Kop. Similarly, my Evertonian mates would watch their team from the Gladys Street when at home.

forward planning, no advance tickets needed or being a member of the clubs official supporters club to qualify to go into a ballot for a ticket. You can just turn up and pay your money. The other uniqueness of non league is its affordability. The price of the modern game has gone mad with many ordinary working class fans being priced out. Non league gives access to live football which is crucial for families as many parents can’t afford tickets for premier league. I think non league also has a big role to play in bringing people together. Through my photography, I do my little bit to help promote the club. However, this is tiny compared to what all the other volunteers do, not just on a match days, but also throughout the week. Remyca has scores of teams from U7s to vets and this would impossible without volunteers giving up their time helping the club.

Did you own any football shirts growing up? Who did you support, and who was your footballing idol? DE: I supported Everton growing up and I still follow the blues. NG: Can’t remember the year, it was mid 80s and Liverpool drew against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield. I can’t even remember it being that memorable other than I think it was televised and on a Sunday which was unusual for the pre Premier League era. The first REMYCA game was about 4 years ago when they played Holker OB at the last day of season. Think it was 2-0 win.

This season has been tough for REMYCA. In your opinion, do you think you have what it takes to survive this season? DE: It’s been a really tough two seasons to be fair in the Prem Division. Last season we started quite well, but then dipped into the second half of the season and the start of this season, we had struggled. STEPHEN KING

Speaking to The Gate this week is stand in captain Stephen King who talks about his career, which player in the REMYCA team is the practical joker and his usual match preparation for an away game. Here is what he had to say: First of all, what encouraged you to get into football? Who did you support growing up? Football was the sport that all people played in school growing up and I suppose that’s where I started playing myself, on the school yard before school, lunch time and sometimes after school. I support Everton. Did you own any football shirts growing up? Who was your footballing idol? I had a couple of Everton kits but I didn’t go the game as my dad is a Liverpool fan. I followed me dad playing football when I was younger, most weekends I’d be going with him, he played a half decent standard. Used to enjoy the old St Helen's ground that used to have the dog track around it for a season or two. Could you give us a brief insight into your career? How did you become captain? I have played either Saturday or Sunday and sometimes both for about 15 years now, most of the time for local sides or teams with lads I grew up with, but to be honest I am more than ready to start playing for a vet team. The legs are not what they used to be. As captain, do you think there is more pressure on you? How do you get your team fired up? I am only stand in captain at the moment due to an injury. I don’t feel any more pressure no, whether I wear it or not I don’t feel it changes anything about my game If you were to play alongside any player in the world, who would you pick and why? I honestly couldn’t pick one, too many good players to choose from and if I was to pick one I would be putting myself up alongside them upfront rather than at the back. What has been the best goal you have ever scored, and the best goal you have ever seen? I haven’t scored many for the REMYCA but I had a season 12

further up the pitch with BRNESC and the Warby where I scored a few, but the majority of them were tap ins or headers. The best goal I have seen was at Maghull, we was 1-0 down in a cup game and Colin McDonald scored a Ban Basten esc volley to take it to extra time. It was a worldie. Colin Quirk has come close with a few at Remyca to be fair to him. Who has been the toughest opposition you have played in your career? Which ground is the toughest to go to in the NWCFL? I have played against some tough sides in pre-season friendlies who have fielded a mixture of youth, trialists and first team players at Accrington, Tranmere & Southport but that’s what you want in preparation for the season. In terms of the NWCFL there are plenty of tough sides and places to go so it would be hard to single one team or ground out. Do you remember your first REMYCA game? What was the score? I couldn’t to be fair, I think it might have been Chadderton but I can't be sure. When we left Maghull to come to the REMYCA with the manager I was suspended so I missed a few games before and had to watch before I eventually got a kit on. If you were to play under any manager in the world, apart from your current gaffer. Who would you pick? Probably and old school no nonsense manager, the way in which its played nowadays is different to when we first started playing 20 years ago. Runner ran, players played and goal scorers scored. Which team mate is the practical joker in the team? What has been the best prank you have pulled? Practical joker, Colin McDonald is probably the life and soul of the changing room and I have been around the changes with him for near on 6 seasons now and when were not in the changes were in the clubhouse bar. Ask Flynn about the Inhaler What is your usual pre match preparation for an away game? We meet at the park hotel for most away games and it usually consists of an Aldi shop run with loads of sweets but Ben Morrow ends up eating them all or stashing them for on the way home. He has a terrible sweet tooth.

A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S GAME SQUIRES GATE

LITHERLAND REMYCA

Having lost their previous two, Gate will be wanting to get back to winning ways against a team who have struggled to get going this season.

Litherland have pulled off some great wins in the recent weeks, beating Hanley 4-1 and Avro 1-0 and they narrowly lost to 1874 Northwich.

However, REMYCA managed to hold Gate to a draw in the previous meeting so it’ll be a test for the hosts today.

A team who will put in a shift, and they will have some momentum going into today’s game.

LAST TIME OUT SQUIRES GATE 3

Ing (58, 66) Egidi (90) Saturday 2nd March 2019 /The Brian Addison Stadium/ Attendance: 62 The visitors went close when Gates new keeper Povey was tested, he pushed the ball away from goal to a Remy man but he headed the way Chance over the bar. Down the other end Billy Akrigg showed good awareness to make space in midfield for James Boyd but his low drive was wide as Gate got closer. Corners for both sides came to nothing on 25 minutes as both sides shot wide, Joey Mullen for Gate and Joel Powell for Litherland. Litherland has the last real chance of the first half and missed another easy opportunity. This time the number 9 found himself in space but curled his shot well over. After picking up a knock in the first half, Dan geay was subbed to be replaced by Gary Pett. Pett had been out since Droylsden away in the FA Cup with what looked like a season ending injury so to see him back early was a boost for the squad. Gate made another bright start to the half and went close through Dean Ing, his effort though was over the bar. The visitors then came close themselves but a long range effort cannoned back off the crossbar. Gate then took hold of the game and opened the scoring on the hour mark. Gary Pett sprayed a lovely ball out side to Joey Mullen, the full back took the ball down before crossing to find Dean Ing who fired in. Ing then added his and Gate’s second of the game five minutes later. The ball bobbled around the box was eventually controlled by Ing before he slotted past the keeper. Remyca were then reduced to ten men with ten minutes left. The defender was shown a second yellow card after being booked in the first half. Riccardo Egidi continued his good goal scoring from with his fourth goal in two games when he wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute. Sub Oliver Burgess did well to hold off his man before playing the ball back to Ing, he found Egidi in behind the Remyca defence and the front man kept his composure to slot past the keeper .

JORDAN SINNOTT

Our front cover for today’s programme was designed by club photographer Albert Cooper and as a club we want to pay our tributes to Jordan and send our deepest condolences to his family. Jordan - a non-league player for Matlock Town - died on Saturday 25th January after being attacked during a night out. Three 21-year-old men are being held by police on suspicion of murder.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Jon Stead said “It’s just been a bit surreal. I’ve experienced family losses but I have never really lost a really close friend before.

I’ve experienced a lot of new emotions and it has been really tough, but I’ve drilled it into myself that I just needed to keep playing football because that’s what Jordan would want.

The visitors actually had the ball in the back of the net after ten minutes through experienced striker Richard Brodie but he was flagged offside. A minute later Dean Ing showed good strength to hold off the defender, he played the ball back to James Boyd but his shot was over the bar from just outside the box. Soon after Ing was involved again when he gave Gate the lead. Gary Pett flicked the ball on to Ing who lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper. The visitors found an equaliser after Gate failed to clear in the box. After the ball scrambled around defender Ben Stanton was there to poke home. Done the other end Ryan Riley looked for an instant reply but his the wall with a freekick before Gary Pett volleyed over the bar. Gate went close at the start of the second half when Gary Pett took aim, the keeper spilled the ball but Skem Cleared. Gate retook the lead when defender Cameron Gourley headed in for his first for the club. Skem looked to respond from a freekick on the edge of the box but keeper Jordan Gidley stayed calm and collected the cross. Gate extended the lead every further in the 72nd minute through James Boyd. The midfielder stayed calm to spot away the penalty after Jake Higham had been bought down in the box.

SQUIRES GATE Ing (44) Illey (76)

Ashton started on the front foot and pounced. Adam Gilchrist pounced on the weak header before rounding Gildey and rolling the ball into the empty net. Gate looked to reply when Gary Pett flicked the ball onto Dean Ing but the big strikers first time shot was well saved by Pearson. Gate’s hard work since the opening goal was rewarded two minutes before half time when Dean Ing fired in. Jordan Gidley found Ryan Riley on the right wing, he found Boyd who in turn found Ing who turned and fired past Pearson.

Second half substitute Jack Iley then gave Gate the lead in the 74th minute hen he 5 finished off a quick counter passing the ball into the back of the net. Sadly for Gate though the lead lasted just two minutes when the referee pointed to the penalty spot. 6 Defender Cameron Gourley was judged to have handled the ball in the area after an 7 unlucky bounce from the ball hit his hand. The penalty was converted by Adam 8 Gilchrist who sent Gidley the wrong way for his second of the game. Just as Gate were getting settled again, the homeside struck again. Just two minutes after the 9 penalty Marcus Cusani fired in from the edge of the box after Jordan Gidley had punched the corner clear. The last ten minutes saw Gate press and attack Ashton 10 looking for an equaliser but sadly for Luke Evans men it just didn’t come. 11

Chris Tuck @NonLgeProgs

28

This week, we spoke to Chris Tuck who runs the @NonLgeProgs Twitter page, and has a massive programme collection. He talks about his local non league team, his favourite grounds and his current ground count. Here is what he had to say: First of all, what encouraged you to get into football, and more importantly your groundhopping adventures? My dad loved his football, both playing and watching, pretty sure thats what rubbed off on me. Groundhopping came in two phases. When I realised I’d ticked quite a few of the 92 and then secondly when money was tight, visiting local nonleague grounds.

good pics etc. are always appreciated!

You run the @NonLgeProgs Twitter page, what influenced you to start the page? What can readers expect to find on the page? I love football programmes and decided to catalogue my collection. Instead of doing a spreadsheet I thought I’d just photograph each cover. At that point I set up @NonLgeProgs thinking a couple of people might be interested in the photos. 2 years later and we’ve 7.5k followers! The site has programmes from my own collection but also followers send their pics from their most recent to pre-war. We have themes to keep things interesting and regular comps to give programmes away.

Which non league club to you live closest to? Can you give us a brief insight into their ground, their league, etc? My closest non-league team is Sholing FC. Their ground is functional although improvements are now taking place. The local step 5/6 league is the Wessex league. Decent standard, Sholing were promoted to the Southern League South & West last year.

You probably receive a lot of programmes, and you have been full of praise for the Squires Gate issues this season. What makes a good football programme to you? I’m not too choosy, if a club has gone to the trouble of putting one together, probably by a local volunteer, than I’m just happy to get one. Of course an attractive cover, stats, articles,

Do you remember the first game you attended? What was the score? Non-league wise I used to watch my dad play for Salcombe Marines in South Devon. I was taken to my first ground, Home Park, for Plymouth Argyle v Swindon when I was 6. Can’t remember the score but I do remember the ref falling over!

Did you have any football shirts growing up? Who was your footballing idol? I was given my first football kit at 7 years old. It was the Southampton ‘Rank Xerox’ kit. From then on I got various new saints kits throughout my childhood. Which team did you support growing up? What was the reason behind supporting them? As per above we moved to Southampton from Devon when I was 7. The kit was the bribe and it worked!

How many grounds have you visited? I’m currently on 494. I’ve done 81/91 league grounds in England (70 with Southampton) so ideally need to get that completed at some point.

The best game you have ever watched? The worst? In general, and ones that you have attended on your travels? An 8-2 win over Coventry City at the Dell in 1984 with two hatricks (Wallace & Moran) was special to see. More recently the 8-0 win over Sunderland was fun. Also, even though we lost, seeing saints play Inter in the San Siro in the Europa League was incredible. The worst? too many with saints, cup defeats at Tranmere, Shrewsbury and Port Vale to name a few! What makes non league unique to you? As a supporter it’s just a relaxing place to be. Watching Southampton can be stressful to say the least (!) so nonleague is a place I can just get some fresh air, chill out and enjoy a cheap game of football.

Pictured above: Chris’ local non league teams

What is the best goal you've seen, live and in general? I watched Southampton home and away whilst Matt Le Tissier was at his best. Out of his top 100 goals video I saw over 90 live. Incredible goals, guess Blackburn away when he beat exSaints goalkeeper Tim Flowers was one of the best. Your favourite grounds? The Oval, home of Glentoran takes some beating. The Dell (RIP) obviously. Anywhere with big old floodlights like at Barrow in Cumbria. Overseas it would have to be San Siro, De Kuip, home of Feyenoord and the Vallecas stadium in Madrid home of Rayo Vallecano.

Pictured above: The Dell, Southampton

What is your usual matchday routine when visiting a new ground? Arrive early, get the programme and take some photos. Go back into the town if I’ve not been before. Then back to enjoy the game. Have you ever visited any games abroad? What makes the experience different in other countries? Yes I write stadium reviews for an American website (www.stadiumjourney.com) so this gets me out and about. Have seen football in 13 countries so far. The difference is the ability to take your beer onto a packed terrace, sing, jump up and down, see some tifo and pyro and basically wish the English premier league hadn’t become so sterile, middle class and dull!

Pictured above: De Kuip, Feyenoord

Have you visited any obscure grounds? What made them different to the others? I like the army grounds at Aldershot and Tidworth, plus the navy ground at US Portsmouth. A bit out of the ordinary and I will be there! What grounds are you planning on visiting in the next few months? I’ve just got back from Belgium. Oostende was a great tick and a lovely place. Heading to Boston United in Feb to tick their ground before it’s demolished. I don’t plan too far ahead to be honest. I try to watch my home town team Barnstaple Town when they play locally. 29 31

US Portsmouth v Swanage Town and Herston From the archive this week, we take a look at a ground mentioned by Chris Tuck in our groundhopping feature. But the article itself is from footballgroundsinfocus.com. The game was played back in 2012 at the Victory Stadium in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. Wrote by Justin Holmes. US Portsmouth 0-3 Swanage Town and Herston

“Fancying a trip to the south coast today for the first time in quite a long time, I bought my train ticket to Portsmouth without knowing for sure where I would end up. Portsmouth versus Walsall in Football League One was tempting, although having witnessed Football League action the night before, with Charlton's bitterly disappointing home defeat to Crystal Palace last night, I chose a more tranquil affair instead and pay a visit to a club that has aroused my curiosity for some time. The Victory Stadium is about a ten minute walk from Portsmouth and Southsea rail station and whilst the vast complex of sports pitches is easy to find - particularly for me, as I had watched county cricket here back in the nineties, access to the football ground within it is not, with no specific signposting and one has to walk past a security hut to enter the complex, walking past various sports buildings, rugby and hockey pitches to finally get to the football ground. Spectators are distant from the action due to an athletics track circling the pitch, with hard standing available around the outside of the track apart from behind one end, although this grassed area is still accessible to spectators. There is a 500 seater main stand that has comfortable seating that is well protected and offers excellent views of the action, although it certainly would not win any design awards. Although the ground is open with some rather unattractive, functional buildings close by in the complex, facilities far exceed what one usually encounters in the Wessex League Division One, grass banks with sporadic trees add a nice touch, as does the presence of Landport Gate, the original main entrance gate to the city, to the side of the stand.

In the background one can see some of Portsmouth's taller buildings, including, most notably, the Spinnaker Tower. The friendly gateman roves around spectators collecting admission and offering programmes, which were a pretty good effort considering the level of football and perenially very low quantity of readers.

30

up just one win and one draw from their opening six games.

Today would be United Services Portsmouth's first game in this year's competition, and form would be difficult to guage, as almost unbelievably in mid September, they are yet to begin their league campaign, although they did beat Cowes Sports in the League Cup last week. On a beautifully warm and sunny afternoon, the game had a quick start, with the visitors opening the scoring with barely a minute on the clock. The ball was floated over from the right, and a defender, in plenty of space, bizarrely chose to chest the ball across his own area, allowing Liam Currell to take a touch before driving low into the corner. That did not seem to wake up the home side, and the first half was quite a tepid affair with few chances, with United Services playing some good passing football without ever really threatening apart from one fierce shot which dipped just over the bar, as Swanage looked very comfortable with their lead. In the second half, although Swanage had an opportunity to double their advantage when they had a shot cleared off the line, United Services looked slightly more threatening than they had in the first half, but it wasn't until the 68th minutes when they came close to scoring, when a player who looked a long way offside strode forward for a one-on-one opportunity, but he delayed and delayed waiting for the keeper to commit, but he took the ball wide and his eventual shot hit the post. Within the next couple of minutes and United Services also had a shot cleared off the line and then when the ball was played inch perfect from wide low into the box, the forward could only scuff his shot, with the ball tamely hitting the goalkeeper from barely six yards out. Swanage still had the odd chance and one felt the game really could go either way, until fourteen minutes from time, when Swanage scored a second. The ball was played to the edge of the box, and Currell took the ball forward, sidestepped the keeper before passing the ball into the net for his second of the game.

As the game entered added on time, Swanage really put some gloss on the scoreline with a real contender for goal of the season - I doubt I shall witness a better goal at any level of football this season. Paul Best gained possession in his own penalty area, strode forward, jinking past numerous players and evading challenges before bursting into the box for a oneThe match would provide the opportunity for a giantkilling, with on-one opportunity with the keeper, and he showed terrific composure after such a long run at the end of 90 minutes to a club from the Dorset Premier League visiting a club from a step above, the Wessex League Division One. Swanage Town shoot the ball past the keeper and into the net. and Herston have already successfully overcome a club from the Wessex League Division One in the previous round, beatIf you enjoyed reading, check out footballgroundsinfocus, a ing Andover New Street 3-0 at home, their first win the FA great website for fellow groundhoppers. Rylands went close to opening the scoring at the start of the game when Kane Drummond had all the time in the world to score but fired wide under pressure. Down the other end Luke Holden took aim but he volleyed over the bar. Once again Jordan Gidley saved Gate’s blushes when he was quick off his line to deny the hosts the opening goal. Gate went close themselves when a free kick just over the half way line found Luke Holden, he flicked the ball onto the back post but Josh Westwood just couldn’t reach it. Holden was again involved when he came the closest for Gate to opening the scoring. He was found at the back post but his header was denied by a superb save from Michael Emery in the Rylands goal. Emery then had to be alive when the following corner came straight at him, he clawed it away into the path of Cameron Gourley but the defender’s shot was blocked and cleared. Gate defenders put there bodies on the line in the 28th minute when three different players blocked shots before the corner in was cleared. Luke Holden and Dean Ing looked to link up again in the 30th minute but the latter couldn’t reach Holden’s flick on. James Boyd took aim as he looked to give Gate the lead but his turn and shot was saved by the keeper. Rylands eventually opened the scoring. Experienced striker Freddie Potter turning the ball in from a corner just before half time. Gate started the second half with a substiution with Nana Adarkwa replacing Ryan Dodd. The winger made an instant impact when he turned inside the box but his shot was straight at the keeper The second half was a much better display from Gate who looked to control the game and keep the ball on the floor more. The equaliser came when Jake Hingham burst forward from the back into the box, he found Adarkwa inside the box, the winger turned and chipped the ball over the keeper. The shot looked to be going in but Dean Ing made sure of it following in for his fourteenth goal of the season. Gate looked to take the lead but with everyone up for the corner they chose to take it short, the ball was cleared, Morris for Rylands burst forward but saw his shot trickle wide. It looked like Gate would be picking up a good point on the road but with just two minute of the game left, Rylands took the lead. Sub Matthew Farnworth losing the ball in midfield, Kane Drummond found Sub Lewis Buckley who linked the ball over Jordan Gidley to win it.

Carl Jenkinson THIS WEEK IN HISTORY On 5th February 2011, Newcastle earned a dramatic point against Arsenal coming back from a 4 goal deficit to draw 4-4. Newcastle were in their first season back in the Premier League after a one season spell in the Championship and had already beaten Arsenal away in the league.

8 FEBRUARY 2014

That infamous strike from Cheik Tiote was the equaliser for the Toon. On 4th February 2004, despite being a man down, Manchester City came from a 3-0 deficit to beat Spurs 4-3 in an FA Cup fourth round replay. The teams had played a 1-1 draw in Manchester to set up the replay at White Hart Lane. Goals from King, Keane and Ziege in the first half looked to have won the game for Spurs but a second half comeback and a 90th minute strike from Jon Macken gave City the lead.
