LITHERLAND REMYCA

Saturday 2nd March 2019 / The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:62 Squires Gate picked up a second win on the bounce at The Brian Addison Stadium with a solid performance against Litherland Remyca, particularly in the second half. Manager Andy Clarkson handed debuts to Max Povey in goal signed from Burscough and Jacob Davis who joined the club from Kendal Town. Gary Pett was fit enough to make the bench after what looked like a season ending injury. Gate made a good start to the game but we’re restricted to just long shots. Billy Akrigg tried his luck from distance but his shot was smothered by the keeper. James Boyd also tried his luck moments later, but saw that shot wide of the goal. And Clarkson’s plans had to be changed quickly just before the ten minute mark when Gate lost Ryan Riley to injury. The winger was starting up front but a deep gash to the knee after a challenge saw his day end early. The visitors went close when Gates new keeper Povey was tested, he pushed the ball away from goal to a Remy man but he headed the way Chance over the bar. Down the other end Billy Akrigg showed good awareness to make space in midfield for James Boyd but his low drive was wide as Gate got closer. Corners for both sides came to nothing on 25 minutes as both sides shot wide, Joey Mullen for Gate and Joel Powell for Litherland. Litherland has the last real chance of the first half and missed another easy opportunity. This time the number 9 found himself in space but curled his shot well over.

Half time - Squires Gate 0-0 Litherland Remyca After picking up a knock in the first half, Dan geay was subbed to be replaced by Gary Pett. Pett had been out since Droylsden away in the FA Cup with what looked like a season ending injury so to see him back early was a boost for the squad. Gate made another bright start to the half and went close through Dean Ing, his effort though was over the bar. The visitors then came close themselves but a long range effort cannoned back off the crossbar. Gate then took hold of the game and opened the scoring on the hour mark. Gary Pett sprayed a lovely ball out side to Joey Mullen, the full back took the ball down before crossing to find Dean Ing who fired in. Ing then added his and Gate’s second of the game five minutes later. The ball bobbled around the box was eventually controlled by Ing before he slotted past the keeper. Remyca were then reduced to ten men with ten minutes left. The defender was shown a second yellow card after being booked in the first half. Riccardo Egidi continued his good goal scoring from with his fourth goal in two games when he wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute. Sub Oliver Burgess did well to hold off his man before playing the ball back to Ing, he found Egidi in behind the Remyca defence and the front man kept his composure to slot past the keeper.

AWAY DUGOUT CHIRS HERBERT Chris is a UEFA B qualified coach and joined the club at the start of the 2016/17 season from National League side Chester FC where he was Head of Player Recruitment. In his first season, he finished third in the NWCFL. As a player Chris was a prolific striker having played for Chester City and Vauxhall Motors, as well as spells in Wales with Connah's Quay Nomads, Airbus and Welshpool. His management roles include Conwy Borough, where he guided the team to runners up in the Huws Gray Alliance and won the Huws Gray Cup, Cefn Druids and Flint Town United.

HISTORY OF TOWN Runcorn Town are celebrating their 50th season in football in 2017/18, and have come a long way from that very first season when the club were one of the founder members of the Runcorn Sunday League. They were formed as CKD, a works team from 'D' section of the local Castner Kellner plant. The club changed name to Mond in 1970, reflecting the Mond Division of ICI of which ran the Castner Keller plant, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL), joining in Division Five. At the end of that first season, they amalgamating with struggling ICI Weston, who played in the WDL Division One, added Rangers to their name and became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two. Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team, and in 1991/92 won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl. The following two seasons saw third place finishes, also reaching two more Bowl Finals of which they won one. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. Despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season, Division One proved a struggle and they were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02. Success returned in 2004/05 with the team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time. The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history. It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations under Simon Burton's leadership, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up, with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup. In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. The first season in the Premier Division saw Town continue in the same vein that they left Division One, with the team losing out on the title on the last day of the season to Ramsbottom United. James McShane once again topped the league scoring charts with Town scoring over 120 goals in all competitions. The club were also once again the last remaining NWCL side in the FA Vase, this time reaching a replay in the Last 32 before bowing out, as well as making their debut in the FA Cup, winning two games before bowing out to Evo-Stik League side Ashton United. The 2012/13 season saw Town finish fourth in the league, with the main highlight of the season coming in the FA Vase. This saw the club reach the Last 16 for the first time, losing in extra time to Walsall Wood. Another good scalp came in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 5-0 away win at Warrington which earned the "Team of the Round" award. The 2013/14 season saw Town finish fifth, and they disappointingly lost at holders Whitley Bay in the Second Round of the FA Vase, but the club had its first decent FA Cup run. Wins against Bootle, Goole and Witton Albion set up a tie at Conference North leaders Barrow, 83 places above them in the pyramid. Town shocked their hosts with a 1-0 win thanks to Andy Potter's stunning goal, with Town losing in the Third Qualifying Round to Norton United. Two poor seasons followed finishing 13th, with Town parting company with Simon Burton by mutual consent. Chris Herbert was appointed manager and he started the 2016/17 season with a brand new squad with not one player retained. There were no real cup runs this year, but Town bounced back in the league to finish third, level on points with runners-up Bootle. Town go into the 2017/18 season with renewed optimism, with the Holy Grail of promotion to the Evo-Stik still the ultimate aim for the club.

Gate could have opened the scoring as soon as three minutes into

the game. Striker Jack Williams found space in the box, but fired his shot straight at a defender. His strike partner Tarren Moxon then had a chance but fired his shot over the bar, after the visitors had done similar. It would be Gate that would open the scoring after 17 minutes and it was fully deserved. Striker Jack Williams rounding Runcorn Town keeper Andy Metcalf, leaving him on the floor before tapping into the empty net. The visitors then had two golden chances to equalise before finally finding the break through. First a corner was headed over before a freekick was well saved by Ben Fletcher with his feet. Runcorn would then equalise after the resulting corner from that save. Simon Thelwell missed from the corner and was walking back so was left unmarked, striker Mark Reed was played through and found the retreating Thelwell for an easy tap in at the back post. Chances for both sides saw the half end in the draw. Gary Pett fired a powerful freekick that was blocked on 40 minutes before Kieran Evans for Runcorn forced Ben Fletcher into another good save with his feet. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-1 Runcorn Town Gate could have taken the lead for a second time in the game virtually from kick off at the start of the second half. But an early corner for Gate has headed up and easily collected by the Runcorn keeper. On 52 minutes both teams again had the chance to take the lead. First Nick Greenall's shot was blocked then Runcorn attacked down the other end and rattled Gate's crossbar. Jack Williams, looking for his second of the game, had a great chance on 63 minutes when manager Danny Penswick played him in on goal. He turned on the edge of the box but his chipped shot could only find the roof of the net. As the game looked to be heading for a draw, the visitors would grab the winning goal. Harsh on Gate whose performance deserved at least a point. Striker Mark Reed allowed too much room on the edge of Gate's box to turn and shoot past Fletcher.

RUNCORN TOWN ANTOINE 35 JENNINGS 58

SATRUDAY 9TH MARCH 2019/NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/STADIUM /HT: 1-1/ATT:155 Runcorn’s manager Paul McManus made 2 changes from last week’s game at Ashton bringing in Carl Rodgers and Dale Jennings with Shaun Tuck on the bench after serving his 3 match suspension and an illness during the week. Craig Jones made a welcome return to the club adding his experience to the bench. Runcorn started the game poorly and were fortunate when a 25 yard shot from Foster struck the top of the crossbar with Adam Reid unable to get anywhere near the ball. When Cope broke through only a last ditch tackle from Simon Thelwell rescued the situation by conceding a corner. Runcorn had started the game slowly but when Kevin Exell was brought down near the halfway line Thelwell swung the free kick high into the Congleton goalmouth where Ellison did well to catch the ball under the angle of upright and crossbar. Congleton’s central defender Morris had an opportunity when he found himself unmarked and in space inside the penalty area but Adam Reid brought off a point blank save to block his fierce goal bound volley. A long ball out of defence from Thelwell found Shaun Weaver on the edge of the penalty area he quickly switched the play to Dale Jennings who cut inside two defenders before hitting a low shot that Ellison took full length by the foot of his post. Carl Rodgers played a superb ball that split the home defence to find Jennings free and unmarked inside the Congleton penalty area but a superbly timed tackle from Williams blocked the strikers shot as a goal looked likely. Some excellent play from the lively Exell out wide on the right touchline resulted in a pulled back cross to Weaver on the edge of the penalty area, he hit the ball first time but it flew well wide of the target without troubling Ellison. Runcorn had withstood the early Congleton pressure and done well as a team to fight their way back into this game, especially following the bright opening from the home side, Runcorn were rewarded following some excellent skill from Liam Turner who played the ball into the path of Francois Antoine inside the Congleton penalty area, he was partly blocked by the advancing Ellison but the ball broke kindly for him and the young striker responded like lightening to hit a firm volley home from a narrow angle to open the scoring in the 35th minute. The game was entertaining and swung from end to end with some good movement and football from both sides. Congleton’s Hasler-Cregg looked dangerous every time he got the ball his pace and control a constant threat. Thelwell did well with some superb tackles on the tricky wide player. A cross from him was cleared by a diving header from Marcus James then Adam Reid held onto a shot from Foster. Just as Runcorn were looking to go in with the lead at half time Foster won possession near the dead ball line wide on the right, he produced a perfectly lobbed cross that found DAN COPE on the back post whose downwards header bounced up off the goal line into the roof of the net to beat Adam Reid in the 43rd minute.

HALF TIME: CONGLETON TOWN 1 - 1 RUNCORN TOWN Congleton started the second half as they had the first with plenty of possession especially in the Runcorn half the visitors were pegged back, they defended well however with keeper Adam Reid well protected by his back four. Some tremendous play from Hasler-Cregg ended with a perfectly timed tackle from Runcorn’s Captain Simon Thelwell to save a dangerous situation. When Speed broke through his hurried shot flew high over Reid’s crossbar. Congleton had two clear opportunities following a corner on the left, Liam Turner on his goal line deflected a shot on to the upright, the rebound fell to Cope who had his close range shot blocked by the out stretched boot of Thelwell. Congleton introduced 2 early substitutes, ex Runcorn favourite Adegbenro and former player Henderson brought on in an attempt to secure victory for the high flying host’s. It was Runcorn however who regained the lead in the 58th minute when a long cross from Exell found DALE JENNINGS on the edge of the penalty area, the 01 CRAIG ELLISON 01 ADAM REID striker created space for himself but didn't take the early opportunity to shoot, as the chance appeared to have disappeared he then skilfully curled the ball into the 02 DOMINIK WILLIAMS 02 STEPHEN WAINWRIGHT top corner before Ellison could move. McManus took the opportunity to introduce 03 JACK DISNEY 03 LIAM TURNER Shaun Tuck who came on to replace Jennings, even though still feeling the after effects of his illness, Tuck however proved an effective replacement. He was denied 04 THOMASS STEPHENS 04 SIMON THELWELL a goal within 5 minutes of his introduction when he turned yet another cross from Exell home on the far post, the Referee however pulled play back following a late 05 THOMAS MORRIS 05 MARCUS JAMES tackle on Exell that floored the player, it earned Runcorn a free kick and a yellow 06 ANTHONY GRIFFITH 06 CARL RODGERS card for the Congleton central defender. No consolation or advantage here for Runcorn or Tuck. Craig Jones came on to replace Exell who obviously was feeling 07 WILLIAM HASLER-CREGG 07 DANILE BYRNES the effects of the late foul tackle and he hobbled slowly to the touchline. Liam Turner did well to take the ball off Hasler-Cregg in the centre circle and as he 08 PAUL SPEED 08 SHAUN WEAVER advanced on goal he had his powerful shot blocked by Morris on the edge of the 09 DANILE COPE 09 FRANCOIS ANTOINE penalty area, the ball then fell into the path of Shaun Weaver who also had his shot charged down by the now over worked Morris, great defending and covering by the 10 STEVE FOSTER 10 DALE JENNINGS centre back. Congleton responded as full time approached and Adegbenro worked himself an opening but his low shot from 18 yards was wide of the upright and 11 JOHN MAIN 11 KEVIN EXELL failed to trouble Adam Reid. Henderson then cut in from the left but his shot from the corner of the penalty area flew high over the crossbar. Runcorn played out the added on time within the Congleton half to earn them12 SAUL HENDERSON 12 PAUL MCMANUS selves a welcome 3 points.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid

Last week it was reported that plans by the ownership at North Ferriby United to both re-name and re-locate the club appear to have fallen through. The proposals, which understandably triggered a furious reaction from the Villagers’ faithful, were a real injustice and would have essentially amounted to the theft of a famous football club. The problem of owners going to war with their own fan base has always been an issue in football and is a problem that affects teams in the Football League and the Premier League just as much as in Non-League. It is a tricky situation for the FA and although there are some that argue that the organization should perhaps perform more stringent tests on potential owners before ratifying a sale, this is much harder in practice than it seems in principle. In an age of extreme political and economic divisions, football clubs have the potential to offer a sacred space of unity and togetherness. It is therefore a tremendously sad sight to see when fan bases become divided and disenfranchised at the hands of rash and self-serving owners. Thankfully, for North Ferriby fans at least, this period in their history looks likely to soon be over after it was revealed that owner Carl Chadwick is believed to be looking to part ways with the club. Hopefully the Yorkshire club can now be passed into the hands of a group who want to properly engage with the fan base and make Grange Lane into a place where people can get away from the stresses and strains of modern life for a couple of hours every two weeks and simply enjoy a match with people they may otherwise have never spoken to –that’s what football is all about!

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid I recently caught up with Stockport County’s Jim Gannon to discuss his side’s superb run of form of late. League affairs and the Hatters’ outstanding run of late had to be discussed; the small matter of an unbeaten 16-game charge that had seen Gannon’s side march from mid-table to the summit of National North before last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Brackley Town (that was always going to happen once I chose to write this column on how ‘great’ they have been). But putting last Saturday’s result aside against another side who have hit form at the right time, winning often becomes a habit.

In County’s case, Gannon claimed there was a combination of factors: the club, which is still parttime, has added an extra day of training to get the very best out of the squad; they have been fortunate with injuries; and the players brought in have gelled quickly. Meanwhile, old-fashioned hard work has been the garnish to these chief ingredients. But while the Hatters punch away at the top of one table, it is another which they are rooted to the foot of that may well have had the most positive bearing on their season as they prop up the rest in the disciplinary charts. Before last weekend, Gannon’s side had received just 33 yellow cards with only one dismissal from their 33 games. And this is no one-off; last year Stockport were awarded this newspaper’s award for Fair Play, and Gannon spoke then of the need to maintain standards on the pitch because eventually it will have a positive effect. They didn’t receive one red card last season, an astonishing achievement in a league as fullblooded as the National North. Of course, the good behaviour doesn’t always reap rewards; table-topping Chorley are working towards mediocrity when it comes to their disciplinary record this season. But Stockport, along with the side that beat them on Saturday, Brackley, are streets ahead when it comes to keeping players away from the headmaster’s office.

We all love a good tackle and the blood and thunder of this game, but the days of Billy Bremner kicking players for fun are long gone. Good behaviour brings its rewards, and there is something to be said for clubs that leave a lasting and positive mark on you, rather than on opposing players.

AROUND THE LEAGUE The stormy weather that swept in during the early hours of Saturday morning inevitably took its toll on the scheduled weekend fixtures. In the end, six games went ahead, three of them on grass and three on artificial surfaces, evenly spread with two games in each division. In the Premier Division, there was an important result at Yockings Park, with Bootle's 3-1 win at Whitchurch Alport moving them just two points behind City of Liverpool at the top of the table. It was Bootle's 14th successive win, and they had built a two goal lead by half time through goals from Ryan Cox and Carl Peers, before Connor Millington made the game safe with a third goal 20 minutes from time. Luke Walley reduced the arrears for Alport with a late first time shot. In the other game that went ahead in the top division, Burscough's 3-0 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton keeps West deep in relegation trouble, four points from safety. Jordan Lorde and Chad Whyte put Burscough two by half time, and Terry Cummings added a third on 63 minutes. The two games in the First Division North delivered 16 goals, and while it was maybe no surprise that league leaders Longridge Town scored four at St Helens Town, the form guide didn't suggest that the home side would battle back to earn a 4-4 draw. Richie Allen put Longridge Town ahead on 15 minutes, but two goals from Matthew Smith put St Helens 2-1 up by the break. Paul Turner equalised straight after the restart, but Josef Faux then made it 3-2 for St Helens in the 54th minute Two more goals from Richie Allen, the second a penalty to complete his hat trick, seemed to have turned the game in Longridge's favour, but an Alex Moffitt goal six minutes from time levelled for St Helens. Longridge are now seven points ahead of second placed Avro at the top of the table, although Avro have two games in hand. At the Anfield Sports Centre, Lower Breck consolidated their third place position with a 7-1 win over Holker Old Boys. There was little to suggest the final score would end as it did, as Breck only led 2-0 at the break through goals from Luke Duffy and Peter Moore. Duffy scored his second of the game three minutes into the second half, and in the final quarter of the game Breck piled on the agony for Holker with further goals from Michael Douglas, Stephen Milne, Jamie Henders and Thomas Kinsella. Brad Hubbold scored Holker's consolation.

In the First Division South, the form guide was turned on its head at the Stockport Sports Village, with second placed Stone Old Alleynians losing 8-0 to Stockport Town, who started the day in 14th place. Two goals from Gavin Salmon had the Lions two up at half time, and he completed his hat trick shortly after half time. George Blackwell and Kiarno Samms both scored twice, and Joshua Robinson chipped in with the other goal. FC Oswestry Town continued their good run of form, and their 5-0 win at Stone Dominoes continued a run that sees them at the top of the division's form table, with five wins and a draw from their last six games. Owen Lloyd, Michael O`Reilly and Liam Parry had put Town three ahead by half time, and Parry's second goal on 51 minutes and a fifth from Samuel Spridgeon five minutes later completed the scoring. Town are now sixth in the table, while Dominoes remain rooted to the bottom spot.
