Goodeveningall, and welcome to tonight’s NWCFL Premier Division match between Squires Gate and Charnock Richard. A warm welcome to the travellingfans, aswell as our loyal home supporters.

We’ll be hoping to bounce back tonight, after what was a very frustrating 3-2 defeat to Winsford United on Saturday. We dominated large periods of the game, but some poor defending, missed chances and back luck meant we came away with nothing on a day we certainly deserved at leastapoint.

Charnock will be sure to provide another tough test for us tonight, but we’re confident in ourselves that we can get back to our best and return towinningways.

After tonight we make thetripto Yorkshireto faceEmleyAFCinthe second round of the FA Vase, it’s a huge game for us and it’d be great to see as many of you as possible supporting thelads.

Thank you for all your support, enjoy the match!

Q&A

NATHAN PENNINGTON

Nathan! You're the cover star for today's programme. How are you settling into Squires Gate?

I’ve settled in really well, it helps when everyone at the club is very welcoming, players management and most importantly the fans and volunteers.

pick the hero up my biggest fan Paul (my grandad). I don bothers me playing home or away I feel like I can get up for both home or away games, it helps thatthefans travel with us.

You've put in some class performances already this season, and pulled off some match winning saves to become a fans favourite. How do you prepare yourself mentally for a big game? Preparation is the most important part, getting a good nights sleep before any game, with a clear head that’s fully focused on the game. What is your matchday routine? Do you prefer home or away matches?

I get up and go for a cold shower straight away to wake myself up. Go downstairs get a strong coffee, bowl of 3 weetabix and 2 slices of toast. Then headoff to .

You won player of the month last month, how does it feel to have your performances recognised?

It feels great, especially coming into a new club and settling in straight away because sometimes it takes time to get going and I’m glad that’s not been the case.

The penalty shoot-out against West Allotment. How did you prepare for that? What goes through your mind when facing a penalty?

I don’t feel a lot goes through my mind, when it goes to penalties I tend to keep myself away from the team talk as much as I can to keep myself focused because I know what I can do in shootouts,

I have great record in them.

I try not to overthink what the striker will be doing and focus on Squires Gate have a growing fan base, as well as a strong social media presence. Has the support this season both at matches and online given the squad a boost? Yeah massively, especially the fans coming to away games like they do gives us a massive boost as well as at home when we can feel them behind us. It’s nice to see all the photos from Ian of the players and fans which go on social media and in the programme what comes out every home game, I think it really shows the spirtof the club.

debutant goalkeeper Pascal Jungo no chance.

Gate further behind on 16 minutes. An unfortunate slip from Westwood allowed Winsford to break in behind the Gate defence, with a clever back heel teeing up the striker to bury the chance from just inside the area.

Evans’ men went close to grabbing a goal back just two minutes later, with a header from Westwood cleared off the line. The Gate slipper did well to meet another corner just minutes later, but his header was straight at the goalkeeper.

Gate were growing into the game, and went agonisingly close on 34 minutes, with Nathan Cliffe rattling the bar after being played in behind by James Boyd.

It was Boyd though who got Gate a goal back before the break, tapping home at the back post after Theo Ball did brilliantly down the left to fire a low effort across goal.

Theo Ball went close, with his low effort beating the keeper but cleared off the line after a brilliant run by Riley.

Cliffe got Gate’s second goal of the game to get them back in it on 70 minutes, unloading an incredible strike on his weak foot from distance that flew into the top corner.

Gate took momentum from this and continued to dominate, and somehow didn’t equalise from a corner. The initial header was saved, with rebounds from Boyd, Welsh and others all incredibly cleared off the line from close range in the space of ten seconds.

An excellent cross from Riley that was destined for the head of Ball was agonisingly cleared over the bar, before appeals for a penalty after a clear foul on Cliffe were somehow waved away by the referee. Westwood was then denied an equaliser, with his brilliant header into the bottom corner denied by the offside flag. Gate continued to push but just couldn’t find the equaliser.

CHARNOCK RICHARD

LAST SEASON

Premier

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHARNOCK...

In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C.

The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947 48 season, losing only two games,andscoring107 goals.

The 1967 68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001 2, 2006-07,2010-11 and2011-12.

The 2013 14 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the West Lancashire League, with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles.

an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league.

Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016 17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up inDivision 1.

The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League),theyhave

Charnock won the NWCL League Cup in 2021 22 when overcoming Cammell Laird 5 0 in the Final at Chorley’s Victory Park.

CARL GRIMSHAW 499 NOT OUT

Carl! Thank you for taking your time to chat to us! A real chance to get an insight into your illustrious career as you near that impressive milestone.

Hi. Thanks for asking these questions, I’m happy to answer infull honesty.

You're a recognised player for Charnock Richard, and in the NWCFL. 499 goals is unbelievable at any level. Just how proud will you be when that strikehitsthenetforthe500th time?

Scoring 500 goals for Charnock for me would be just incredible. It will be the icing on the cake for my footballing career. I’m 38 years old, still playing and still loving the great game so to reach this milestone will be amazing.

This will be my last season at this level I think, age (and recovery) is getting the better of me. Many people tell me ‘you’ll know when your time is up’ and I feel thattimeis ever so close.

Can you give us an insight into your typical matchday routine? Do you prefer home or away games? Any superstitions?

I don’t really have any matchday superstitions, mainly because farm life at home dictates what I do every Saturday morning and Tuesday/Wednesdaydaytimes.

I manage my sons football team, CMB Bulls in Bolton so we play every Saturday morning. I really have fallen in love with kids football, watching them progress and helping them develop into such good footballers is really rewardingfor me.

Preparation on match days is important for me, I hate not being organised, hate being late and hate rushing so to get ready for a game I like to take my time andprepare atmyown pace.

Deep heat and muscle rub is key for me now, never play without it. Also, I never wear underwear under my football shorts (not sure why but throughout my career Inever have)

You'd have come up against quite a few players and teams in your career. Who is the one player you hate playing against? Who is the toughest team you have faced?

As you will probably be aware I’m not scared of any team or player to playagainst.

The Liverpool sides are always tough and aggressive but I enjoy the battle, City of Liverpool were probably the ones who made it really difficult for me, especially the fans. I’ve played against manytough defenderstoo.

CARL GRIMSHAW // 499 NOT OUT // PICS BY @STEVENJTAYLORPHOTOGRAPHY

What is it about Charnock Richard that has made you wanttostaythereforsolong?

Charnock Richard to me has always felt like home from the minute I arrived. From my younger years at Eagley playing against them I remember thinking, ‘I wish I played for them’.

I scored a hat trick v Longridge in the semi final of a cup at Lancaster City once, enjoyed them all. There has been so many that feeling of scoring goals is trulyamazing.

Yourproudestachievement?

It’s a great family club with so many valuable volunteers helping out there who genuinely love the club like I now do. They make you feel important, treat you so well and welcome you like one of the family. I say it to everyone, once you go to Charnock it’s very difficult for you to leave because they are just fantastic people running a fantastic club!

YouralltimeCharnock5aside

team?

All time Charnock 5 a side team is difficult to choose, so many great footballers.

Keeper Ben Ascroft / Callum Jakovlevs

Defenders Ross O’Farrell/Spen Bibby/Marcus Haydock

Midfield Andy Roberts/Mike Fletcher/Nathan Fairhurst/Ash Young Striker - Me/Jordan Darr/Dave Burrows

My proudest achievements are winning the last 4 golden boots on the league. So happy with them.

What are your plans for when your time on the pitch comes toanend?

People often ask after my football career is over will I continue coaching/managing adults football. I can honestly say that it isn’t for me, certainly at this moment in time. I’d never rule anything out but not right now. I’m loving managing my lads team and with how busy work life is, I just don’t have the time.

Anyembarrassing stories from your time on the pitch?

Go on, talk us through your top3goals?

My 3 most memorable goals, jeez that’s difficult. I scored a great lob over Jordan Gidley head v Barnoldswick in the FA Cup (could’ve been vase) in extra time, enjoyedthat one.

Scored a great 18 yard header v Leek Town away (think that was in the FA Vase)

When my playing career is over I will enjoy the rest, focus on my lads team and get them the very best they can be. Work life is always hectic so will always be busy with that. My love for Charnock will always be there and I have every intention to stay in touch with the great people there, certainly be a regular supporter and help out where I can.

Not any embarrassing stories sorry. First time my boy came watching me play was in a cup final at Fleetwood, (I got sent off) he thoughtI was going to prison.

Last thing you do before steppingoutontothepitch?

Last thing I do before going on the pitch is shakes the hands of all myteam mates.

If the Charnock squad went in the jungle. Who would be the first to back out of the challenges?

Danny Reagan or Callum Jakovlevs would wimp out of any challenges.

And if you went on Love Island, whowouldwin?

Spencer Bibby would win love Island

Q&A WITH STEVEN TAYLOR

Hi Steven! Thank you for taking your time to speak to us. For those who don't know, could you tell us briefly what your role is at Charnock Richard and how you got involvedwiththeclub?

My role at Charnock Richard is club photographer. I got involved with the club through Ian Moore, your own qualityphotographer.

What started out as a few games soon became week in week out as well as preseason training etc. when on the rare occasion there are a no 1st team game I’ll go and give some time to the reserves.

relationship with the players and more often than not I have a chat with one or two and get to know how there feeling about the upcoming game. I then get my high viz beat on, take a few warm up pics before the team go back inside for their final instructions. I then gamble on what end we will be attacking andtakeupmyposition.

This season the gamble hasn’t gone to well at times to the point where I missed the opening goal away at Silsden earlier in the season. At the final whistle I’ll try and get some player expressions Whilst theyleave thefield.

I love non league football. I officiated as a level 4 referee for some years so it gets in your blood. It’s also very accessible. You can get close to players and management and there are very few ‘bigegos’ kickingabout.

Footy scran now. What is your go to matchday scran and what clubs do you think have thebestatthislevel?

As for scran, I don’t get much time to eat on match day. I am though reliability informed that our meat and potato pies are good.

From what I see Avro do the best match day food. It’s more Michelin star than match day scran.

Your all time Charnock 5 a side?

5 a side team. Mmmm, no pressure here! I have a great relationship with all our squad but here goes:

Calum Jakovlevs

Marcus Haydock

Lewis Haydock

Could you give us a quick rundown of what your matchday routine looks like as aphotographer?

I generally arrive at the ground at least an hour and a half before home games in order to get a feelfor theday. Ihavea great

We know how important volunteers are to the game, and especially how photographers like you and Ian Moore are for clubs at this level. It really helps boost social media content but what makes non leagueuniquetoyou?

Nathan Nickeas

Carl Grimshaw

Sub: Owen Green.

Sorry to those who haven’t made the cut but it is what itis.

We can't talk about Charnock without talking about the man who's close to reaching an impressive milestone, Carl Grimshaw. Just how important hashebeentoCharnock?

Grimmy is a top class man both on and off the field. On the field I don’t think anyone would argue that in the 18 yard box he’s deadly. I refer to him as an ‘old fashioned’ striker. Other players will do his running knowing that if the ball goes in the box there’s a high probability Grimmy will be on theendof it.

Off the field he’s a great example to the kids, who adore him. He has time for everyone and is a great ambassador for the club. If you mention Charnock to anyone , they always ask about Grimmy. Top bloke who loves Charnock.

Programmes now. We were pretty impressed with the Charnockprogrammewhenwe came this season. What makes a good programme to you? Have there been any that impressyouatthislevel?

I’m impressed with the current Squires Gate programme and love the current covers you do. Albert looked brilliant. Hats off to all those that put the programmes together. I know our own Ian Livesey puts some serious effort in to ours. It’s just another task that happens behind the scenes thatnotmanyknowabout.

THE GAFFER: RICHARD TRACEY

Tracey started his career at Sheffield United in 1997 before moving to Rotherham in 1998.

He appeared for Carlisle United in the famous Jimmy Glass game against Plymouth Argyle, in which the keeper scored in the 94th minute to keep Carlisle United in the Football League. Tracey’s other clubs featured Macclesfield Town, Scarborough, Bradford Avenue, Ossett Town and Ossett Albion.

Tracey went on to manage Ossett Albion between 2013 and 2018 before being appointed as manager of Emley in May 2019.

ONE TO WATCH: JOE JAGGER

Joe is on loan from fellow NWCFL Premier Division side, Avro.

He has already bagged two hat tricks already this season.

The second hat trick scored against Thackley took him onto 12 goals for the season. He will be one to keep an eye on.

THE GAFFER: ZACH CLARK

A recognisable face for Gate fans, Zach Clark once featured for Squires Gate before moving to Barnoldswick Town. Clark took the reigns at Garstang in November 2021 after

the departure of Richard Cookney.

Zach now has a UEFA B license and has Garstang currently sitting 8th in the First Division North and are unbeaten in their last 3 games.

Last time out, Garstang beat Gate at The Riverside back in July, 3 1 in a pre season friendly.

ONE TO WATCH: JOE NOBLET

Another familiar face among the Gate faithful. Joe is famous for his ghost goal at Ashton Athletic all those years ago and even appeared on Take Me Out!

After leaving Gate, Joe

went on to play for fellow NWCFL Premier Division side Barnoldswick Town, before joining Garstang where he always manages to score a goal against us.

THE BEST

PENALTY TAKERS

IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Who are the best Premier League penalty takers in the history of the competition? We look at which players could best handle the pressure of taking a spot kick, while also reflecting on who wasn’t able to convert from the penalty spot as well in the PremierLeague.

TheOnlyPlayertoScore100% ofPenaltiesinthePremier League

Well, of players to have taken at least 10 penalties in the competition, at least. When offered as a quiz question, most people will opt for Matt Le Tissier as their guess.Wrong.

This accolade is held by former Manchester City midfielder and dominant powerhouse, Yaya Touré. The Ivorian star might have lost his cool about not being given a birthday cake for his 31st birthday, but he certainly held a cool temperament from the penaltyspot.

He took 11 penalties in the Premier League and scored with every single one of them. The player with the next most penalties and a 100% conversion rate is Dimitar Berbatov (nine from nine).

Seven of Touré’s 11 Premier League penalties turned out to be the winning goal in the game, while five put his Manchester Cityteam into the lead.

MattLeTissierDidMissa Penalty?

No this is not a conspiracy. He may have scored 25 penalties in the Premier League, but Matt Le Tissier did miss a spot kick in the competition. The only man to save a Premier League penalty taken by Le Tissier? That would be Nottingham Forest’s Mark Crossleyin March 1993.

That penalty save mattered, too Forest went on to pick up a 2 1 away win that day at The Dell, despite Le Tissier making amends (of sorts)afterhis 22nd

minute penalty miss, when he scored Southampton’s only goal of the game inthe72nd minute.

That was Le Tissier’s third penalty as a Premier League player, after scoring the previous two he took in the competition. He would never miss in the English top-flight again, with his next 23 successfully dispatched past theopposition goalkeeper.

The Guernsey born forward went on to make Nottingham Forest pay for his saved penalty against them, as he scored his next four penalties against them in the Premier League, including three against his nemesis Crossley more than against any other club in thecompetition.

TheBestoftheRest Danny Murphy scored with 18 of his 19 penalties taken in the Premier League (95%), with his only miss coming for Fulham at Manchester City in April 2008 Joe Hart the goalkeeper to ruin

THE BEST PENALTY TAKERS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE // MATT FURNISS

his 100% record with his ninth attempt from the spot in the competition. However, he scored from the rebound to equalise for Fulham, before they went on to win 3 2 and pick up a crucial three points in their battle for Premier League survival (a battle theyultimatelywon).

Of current players in the Premier League to have taken at least 10 penalties, Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson (92%) has the best record from the spot having missed only one of his 12 in the competition. That miss came against Cardiff City for Bournemouth in August 2018, with Neil Etheridge being the goalkeeper to destroy Wilson’s 100% record.

QuirkyPenaltyRecordFacts

Unsurprisingly, Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer is the player with the most penalty goals in the competition (56), having also taken the most in the Premier League (67). Frank Lampard (43), Steven Gerrard (32), Harry Kane (30) and Mark Noble (28) follow Shearer in the Premier League penaltygoal rankings.

Only three players have missed at least 10 penalties in the Premier League: Alan Shearer (11), England’s all time record scorer Wayne Rooney (11) and Teddy Sheringham (10).

Three different players have scored a Premier League penalty for as many as four different clubs, with the trio of Teddy Sheringham (Spurs,Manchester United, West Ham and Portsmouth), Darren Bent (Sunderland, Charlton, Aston Villa and Spurs) and Yakubu (Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Blackburn and Everton) holdingthat record.

A round of applause is due to both Bobby Zamora and Obafemi Martins. These two players are the only two that have scored a Premier League penalty with both their right foot and their left foot that shows someextremeconfidence.

Thierry Henry never saw a Premier League penalty saved, but he still missed two of his 25 taken in the competition. Weirdly both of his penalty misses came via hitting the post against two of the only three Finnish goalkeepers to play in the Premier League (Jussi Jääskeläinen and Antti Niemi). Finish? He could. Finnish? Hecouldnot.

Three players to take at least 10 Premier League penalties have a 91% success rate: Leighton Baines, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf and the late Gary Speed. Of the three, Baines took the most penalties (22) twice as many as Speed and Leboeuf (11). His first Premier League penalty miss came in October 2014 versus Manchester United and David de Gea, ending a record of scoring each of his first 14 penalties in the competition.

Middlesbrough’s diminutive Brazilian Juninho may have been one of the most popular players in club history, but he wasn’t any good at penalties. A shoutfor one of the worst penalty takers of all time in the competition, no player in Premier League history has taken as many penalties as he has (four) without scoring one Paul Merson (three) and Mike Newell (three) came close, though.

The player with the most Premier League goals with every one of them coming via penalties is former Liverpool midfielder Jan Mølby (7), while the player to score the most Premier League goals without a single one being a penalty is Les Ferdinand (149 goals).

Zamora only took two penalties in the competition, too just 10 months apart. Martins’ took four penalties, two with each foot, and scored one and missed one with both his right and left foot turns out he never really found the correctformula.

WhoistheWorstPremier LeaguePenaltyTaker?

Juan Pablo Ángel is the worst penalty taker in Premier League history, of player to have taken at least 10 in the competition. He only scored half (five) of his 10 penalties for Aston Villa between October 2001andOctober 2006.

The Colombian striker scored four of his first five, but then missed four of his final five two of those came in the same game against Fulham in February 2005, seeing both penalties saved by Edwin van der Sar across the space of just five minutes and 44 seconds.
