Saturday 8th December 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 59 The goal scoring in this one got underway after just eight minutes when the visitors took the lead. Striker Christopher Bandell lifting the ball over Ben Fletcher. There were to be plenty of chances in this one and none better than on 19 minutes. Mark Buchan crossing to the back post where Tarren Moxon met the ball but fired over. Moxon was again sent in on goal when he latched onto a superb cross field ball from new man Matthew Lawlor, Moxon drove into the box but fired wide. Moxon would get another chance and made no mistake this time. The ball was missed by a Barnton defender allowing Moxon to run in on goal and fire past the keeper. As quick as Gate equalise came they could have had a second. Mark Buchan looking up to find the run of the impressive 18 year old Dan Gray but the ball was cut out by Barnton before the winger could run in on goal. Dan Gray would impress again when he sent a perfectly timed ball to find the run of hatrick hero Gary Pett on 34 minutes. The striker making no mistake after beating the offside trap he fired past the keeper for his first of the day. The visitors would then grab themselves an equaliser minutes later. A free header at the back post for Chris Smith from a corner equalling the scores. Perhaps the best goal of the game and even the season came on the stroke of half time from an unlucky source. The corner for Gate fell to Dean Ing who found Mike Hall outside the box.
The midfielder made a sweet connection with the ball to find the top corner from outside the box for his first ever goal for the club.
HALF TIME - Squires Gate 3-2 Barnton Gate started the second half fired up and took an early lead through Dean Ing. The ball falling to him inside the box a minute into the second half for him to fire past the keeper. Gate would then score a quick fire double, both coming for Gary Pett for his hatrick. The first came when the ball was pulled back to the back post for the striker to fire past the keeper. The second owed much to the good work of Tarren Moxon. The winger ran from his own half to cross into the back post where Pett was stood for an easy tap in. Barnton then had a quick fire double of their own. First striker Houghton did very well to keep control of the ball before firing past Fletcher. Then rather fortunately for the visitors defender Paul Carroll couldn’t adjust his feet quick enough as he put the ball past keeper Ben Fletcher. The visitors would end the game nine men after being penalised for some heavy tackles. But Gate would hold on to get back to winning ways.

BREIF HISTORY Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913 but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with under Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. Under John Williams in the 1970’s they had the most successful period in their history winning the Cheshire League and the Challenge Cup on several occasions. In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were played in front of crowds of over 3,500. The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 4-1 victory over local rivals Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as Winsford United won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Winsford United have a pedigree of producing fine players who have gone on to perform at a higher level. The likes of Wayne Collins and Andy Oakes have come through the ranks, netting the club transfer fees and sell-on clauses which have been used to improve the infrastructure of the club amongst other things. A period of consolidation in the 2000’s was ended with relegation to Division Two, and with it, a change of policy to concentrate on recruiting and developing local talent. To this end Dave Twite was brought in as Manager in 2003 and three successful seasons followed, however, promotion was missed each season by just a single point.

TUESDAY 14th March 2017
Gate would make the perfect start to the game scoring after 9 minutes. Tarren Moxon was sent in behind the Winsford defence before outpacing the last man and firing low into the bottom corner! Gate would then double their lead in much the same fashion. Winsford hitting the bar from Freekick that found a header, Gate then countered down the other end. Moxon again timed his run well and was found with a perfect pass he then did the rest firing in for his second! Tarren Moxon had a great chance to secure his hatrick after just 35 minutes. He was causing the Winsford backline all sorts of problems. He was sent through again but his shot was saved by the keeper. After the break it would be Winsford who would status the second half the stronger. But Gate again would show their dominance in front of Goal. Tarren Moxon was again sent through to complete his hatrick. He sent a defender and the keeper to the floor before firing into the empty net. Winsford were offered a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty. Alexander looking to win the ball from the attacker was deemed to have fouled him. Winsford stepped up to fire in and reduce the scorleine. Winsford would then pull another back on 75 minutes. A deep cross back into the back post was headed in by an unmarked player.

SATURDAY 25TH MARCH 2017
The Cheshire hosts opened the scoring after two minutes, when Gate keeper Joe Griffith saved a shot with his foot and was unlucky to see the rebound fall to Nathan Cotterell. Gate went further behind when Dave Rossall gave away a penalty for a strong tackle and Kyle Riley scored from the spot, although Griffith got a hand to it. The visitors’ bad spell got worse as mid-table Winsford made it 3-0 on 20 minutes. Gate thought the ball had gone out for a throw but Scott Taylor continued down the left and crossed for Riley to score his second. Gate pulled one back six minutes before half-time, when Tarren Moxon squared the ball for Ben Seear to stroke home. Gate improved in the second half and competed better for the ball, though half-chances for Charlie Waters and Joe Noblet were not converted. The next goal was key and it was Winsford who scored it on 64 minutes. Rossall again conceded a penalty for sliding in and, despite Gate’s protests that the foul took place outside the box, Riley completed his hat-trick with a second spot-kick. Gate would grab a last-minute goal, when late substitute Jordan Casey fainted past de-

WINSFORD UNITED GARDNER 71
Monday 11th December 2017/ Select Security Stadium/Attendance:57 It was Widnes who started brighter, and they opened the scoring after taking their first clear-cut chance of the night. Jack Banister floated a corner towards the near-post, met by the unchallenged Hodkinson who was wellplaced to glance home his first goal for the club in only his second start following a move from Bootle last month. Hodkinson was lively and his relentless pressure was causing Winsford problems defensively. His flick-on from a Mendes goal-kick released Henry in behind, but his effort was tame and well saved by Matthew Green. Green almost gifted Widnes a second on the half-hour mark, dropping a Laverty corner but Phil Doran was unable to poke home allowing Winsford to clear any resulting danger. Winsford struggled to threaten stand-in keeper Mendes in the first half, with Sean Sherwood volleying over before Scott Taylor shot straight into Mendes’ grateful gloves minutes later. Henry and Hodkinson were proving to be a handful, with the two combining well as the latter latched on to Henry’s lay-off only to see a shot blocked as half-time beckoned. Halftime: Widnes 1-0 Winsford United Widnes picked up where they left off and were awarded a penalty seven minutes into the second half. Hodkinson displayed a superb turn of pace to pick up a loose ball and drive into the area. A superb turn got the better of Perry Bircumshaw, who tripped the Widnes striker leaving referee Edward Duckworth with little choice but to point to the spot. Hodkinson, to his credit, dusted himself down and took the penalty himself, sending Green the wrong way with a composed effort to double Widnes’ lead. Straight from the restart, Widnes were awarded a second penalty in as many minutes. Banister cut inside from the left only to be tripped by Jason Fowles with Duckworth again pointing to the spot. 01 GERMANO MENDES

Hodkinson, on a hat-trick, stepped up and successfully converted from the spot again to complete his treble. Widnes’ hat-trick hero went off to a standing ovation twenty minutes from time to be replaced by Smart. Minutes later however, Winsford pulled a goal back. A decent passing moving allowed Michael Koral to power into the area, holding off the challenge of Humphreys. His drilled cross was pushed away by Mendes into the path of Gardner who stroked the ball into an empty net Winsford enjoyed their best spell after pulling a goal back, but Widnes continued to press for a fourth. Smart was lively following his introduction from the bench as he found himself one-on-one with Green only to see his lobbed effort bounce agonisingly over the bar. Henry then volleyed an effort wide before Smart had a chance to kill the game inside second half stoppage time, but he could only lift his effort over after latching on to Mike Burke’s long ball forward.
Fulltime: Widnes 3-1 Winsford United

LAST TIME OUT?
SQUIRES GATE 1 BURSCOUGH 2 This second-round tie went ahead at the second attempt and the first half never warmed up in the icy wind. Burscough, who are five places below Gate in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and one point above the relegation zone, took the lead through Whyte 11 minutes after the break. Gate drew level from a corner just a minute later, Mark Buchan controlling the ball with his chest on the edge of the area and giving the keeper no chance. In an end-to-end contest, Burscough grabbed the winner eight minutes from time with Whyte’s far-post header after Gate were caught on the break. The home side piled forward, including goalkeeper Ben Fletcher, but couldn’t force an equaliser, substitute Jack Williams rounding the keeper only to see his effort cleared off the line.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.
SANTOS RETURNS TO THE TOP
2004
On 19 December 2004, Santos won a record-tying eighth Brazilian league title, beating Vasco da Gama on the season's last day. Santos had been the most dominant Brazilian team of the 1960s, winning six league titles between 1961 and 1968. But the four following decades were relatively barren in terms of major trophies (though they did win the 1998 Copa CONMEBOL). They started a resurgence in the early 2000s, winning a seventh title in 2002, then finishing as runners-up in 2003. In 2004, led by their top scorers Deivid de Souza (22 goals) and Robinho (21), they started the season's last day in the top spot, one point ahead of AtlĂŠtico Paranaense. AtlĂŠtico were at home against relegation-threatened Botafogo, while Santos were at home against Vasco, who were stuck firmly in mid-table. Needing a win to ensure their title, Santos got off to a quick start with a goal from Ricardinho in the 5th minute. Elano then doubled the lead in the 30th minute. Marco Brito pulled one back for the visitors in the 61st minute, but it was their only goal and the match finished as a 2-1 Santos win. It was their eighth league title, matching the record set by Palmeiras in 1994. Palmeiras reclaimed the record in 2016, however, by winning a ninth title.
PRINZ GETS ANOTHER CROWN
2004
On 20 December 2004, German striker Birgit Prinz repeated as FIFA World Player of the Year despite having what, for her, was a down year. She had claimed her first World Player of the Year award in 2003, after leading Germany to victory in that year's World Cup and winning a German league and cup double with Frankfurt. But in the 2003-04 season, despite a strong performance from Prinz, Frankfurt finished as runners-up in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Women's Cup. She continued to shine for the national team, scoring 14 goals in 14 matches that year, but ended 2004 without a single team trophy. Nevertheless, she was a clear favorite for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, finishing with 376 votes, well ahead of second-place finisher Mia Hamm (286).Prinz won the award for a third time in 2005 after taking another league title with Frankfurt and the European Championship with Germany.
SAUDI ARABIA PENALIZES THE UAE On 21 December 1996, Saudi Arabia won their record-setting third AFC Asian Cup, beating the UAE on penalties. It was the first final for the UAE, but the fourth for the Saudis, who won the tournament in 1984 and 1988, then finished as runners-up in 1992. The final was part of a doubleheader at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, where Iran won the earlier third-place match in a penalty shootout against Kuwait (although Iran missed their first attempt Kuwait missed the last three of their five kicks to lose 1-1 (3-2)). The crowd of 60,000 stayed for the final and watched the two teams play to a scoreless draw before going into another shootout--the third consecutive one of the tournament, as Saudi Arabia beat Iran on penalties in the last semifinal. The experience may have provided an edge, as Saudi Arabia--anchored by goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea (pictured)--went on to win the shootout in the final, 2-4. At the time, Saudi Arabia's three titles matched the record set by Iran in 1976. Since then, however, Japan has taken sole possession
of the record with four championships between 1992 and 2011
1996

NWCFL NEWSLETTER Once again, the weather was a winner at the weekend with just six fixtures surviving the winter chills and rain. In the Premier Division, the division's form team Widnes recorded their seventh win on the bounce, posting a 4-1 victory at Charnock Richard. From the moment that Kevin Pollard flicked home the opening goal for Widnes in the first minute, it looked like being a tough shift for Charnock, made worse when they were reduced to ten men after just ten minutes when Mark Woods was shown a straight red card. Ben Hodkinson added a second goal for Widnes before half time, and the game was over as a contest once joint-manager Kevin Towey side footed home a third goal midway through the second half. An own goal increased the visitors' tally further before Carl Grimshaw grabbed a consolation goal for Charnock Richard two minutes from time. The win moves Widnes into second place in the table, albeit they have played more games than all the other teams around them. There was no shortage of entertainment at Victoria Park, with West Didsbury & Chorlton emerging victorious from a ding-dong affair at Burscough with a 5-4 win. After losing an early goal, West had posted a 3-1 lead by half time, with Tom Bailey scoring twice, and the victory will be all the more welcome as it ended a run of ten successive defeats. The defeat means that Burscough remain in the bottom four. Ashton Athletic staged a late show to defeat Abbey Hey 3-0 at Brocstedes Park, with two goals from Dale Korie-Butler and one from Danny Smith in the last 15 minutes turning the game in their favour. In Division One, Litherland REMYCA and Prestwich Heys were the only sides in the top eight that saw any action, and both picked up a point from 1-1 draws. Remy were at held at home by bottom of the league Nelson after taking the lead in the 18th minute through Paul Foy. However, the lead lasted only two minutes before Daniel Mort levelled for the Admirals. Remy stay in second place, 12 points behind leaders Silsden AFC, while Nelson still remain adrift at the bottom. Heys had to settle for a point from their trip to face Holker Old Boys, despite Ashley Stott putting them ahead from the penalty spot with his first goal for the club. However, Bradley Hubbold rescued a point from the Cumbrians with an equaliser in the 63rd minute. There was a dramatic finish to the game at Ruskin Drive, where Carlisle City scored twice in stoppage time to snatch a 3-2 win over St Helens Town. Luke Edwards gave Town a 5th minute lead which they held until midway through the second half when Robert McCartney equalised. Liam Diggle then restored Town's lead 14 minutes from time, but first manager James Tose and then Robert McCartney with his second of the afternoon earned a remarkable win for City.
