FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK “I THOUGHT THE SUBS GAVE US ANOTHER DIMENSION SO IM LOOKING TO CHANGE THINGS ROUND ” Good afternoon everyone, Today we welcome Winsford United to the Brian Addison Stadium. As usual, I would like to give a warm welcome to their players, committee and supporters and I hope you all have a safe journey home. This is the first meeting of the season between the two sides so I look forward to seeing how they have progressed since last season and I look forward to another entertaining game.

“I look forward to seeing how they have progressed since last season.” Winsford are in great form and will be looking to continue that today. They've beaten some of the top teams in recent weeks and came from behind to beat Irlam last time out. It shows they've got character and we know we'll have to be at our best. I think they will be well aware of how dangerous we can be on the attack so they will be set up well and hard to break down. Last season, they did the double over us and all credit to them but I feel we have added a lot more quality to the squad since then, as our position this season does tell. There’s still a long way to go but we are getting some really good results and we’re playing some good football so as long as we continue to do that then I’m happy.

“I think they will be aware of how dangerous we can be on the attack”

I'm expecting an improvement on last Saturday. Whilst we had our fair share of the game I was disappointed we didn't create more. We looked pedestrian in possession and I'm hoping to add some speed and creativity today. I thought the subs gave us another dimension so I'm looking to change things round. Let's hope it's a cracker and we can get some vital points.

Up the Gate

Danny .

Reported By Mark Ashmore

Squires Gate suffered a defeat at home to Maine Road on Saturday after the visitors came from behind with two first half goals. Squires Gate made a lively start to the game winning an early Freekick after three minutes but Matt Mahoneys ball into the box was too close to the keeper who easily collected. Gate striker Brett Dawson would then almost open the scoring on seven minutes. He weaved his way through the Maine Road defence and shot from outside the box. That shot took a bobble and almost found its way into the bottom corner only for the Maine Road keeper to tip it around the post. Maine Road would then get a toe to the ball before Ben Seear could shoot at the front post. It was from the corner that Gate would win a penalty. The ball finding its way out to Richards at the corner of the box, he charged inside and at the third hack of his feet was bought down for a penalty. Brett Dawson would step up to convert the penalty right into the top corner. The visitors didn't really look to threaten Gate going forward and were arguing amongst themselves up until the 34th minute when the game turned. A weak back pass was played short to keeper Griffiths, he tried to reach the ball but couldn't. That allowed Connor Hughes to nip to the ball and follow it into the net. Maine Road would be buoyed by their equaliser and stepped up a gear finding the net for a second time just before half time. A mistake in defence for Gate allowed Jamie Roe to tap in at the front post after his good work.

Pictures By Albert Cooper The second half was a frustrating one for Gate who tried and tried to find an equaliser but just couldn't make the break through. They saw appeals for a penalty turned away in the 56th minute when a shot from outside the area was blocked by a hand in the area. Gate had corner after corner but just couldn't capitalise from any of them. First a corner fell to Paul Carroll on the edge of the box but his speculative effort was volleyed wide of thepost. Brett Dawson then had a chance when he was sent right through the middle of the Maine Road defence but he was second to the ball with the visiting keeping rushing out and clearing. Gate made a couple of changes in search of another goal but even the subs couldn't help break down Maine Road. It was the manager who had the best chance late into the game after he bought himself on. Fellow sub Joe Noblets corner in was glanced over by the manager.

Q&A This week we caught up with Gate Player Seydou Bamba. This will be Seydou 4th spell at Gate with his first back in 2007/2008. Bamba joined gate from Padiham early on in the season and we found out what encouraged him to start playing football and if he remembers his first ever game he watch as a kid also who he would be in a 5 side team with. What encouraged you to start playing football? Which players inspired you as a kid? One of my PE teachers at school was an ex pro, and invited me to his football camp and it took off from there. My two favourite players that inspired me were Ryan Giggs and Rivaldo What is your first ever memory of playing football? Do you remember the first game you played in? Or the first goal you ever scored? It would have to be playing against Abedi Pele’s team (ex Marseille midfielder, father of Andre Ayew who currently plays for West Ham) I was 13 playing against players 2 years older than me. First goal I ever scored was in school tournament in Ghana. It was a header from a corner

Stinger haha. If you could pick one team for Squires Gate to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against? Non-league wise it would be good to play against AFC Fylde as it’s a local team. Pro team wise, Manchester United of course haha (wishful thinking) There has been goals galore at Squires Gate this season, what is the mentality behind the team compared to last season? I wasn’t here last season so I have no idea what the mentality was last year. It could have been because of the players that departed last season such as Jack Sowerby, Alex Murphy, Harry Dunn to name a few. This season I think it has to do with players stepping up in place of the other players. A perfect example was Ryan RiYou been played in a range off position ley. He had to step up his game which he for Gate, which is your best position for did and he got his reward with a move to you and where would you love to play if the league above. This season it’s been u got to choose? more about players being more confident I have played in every position (apart and taking chances. from goal keeper) but predominately a As this is your second spell at gate, Do center forward left winger. I would say you remember your first ever game and my best position in the past was playing goal for Gate? on the wing, running up and down. But This is actually my 4th spell at Gate. The over the last few years I have come to first one being 2007/2008 season under enjoy playing left back and if I had to Andy Clarkson, then under Russ McKenna choose now, that would be my favoured then Dave McCann and now Danny. My position. But I am happy to play anyfirst game was the 2007/2008 season at where. home against Ramsbottom United. I startWhat is your favourite celebration when ed up on the wing and scored on my deyou score a goal? What is the best but with a volley. This picture is from that celebration you’ve ever seen? game I don’t really have one to be honest, may- What was the first ever game you went be just one hand in the air. It just depends to as a kid? on the type of goal scored and at what This would have to be when I lived in Ghamoment in the game. Definitely don’t na. I watched the Ghana national team have a signature celebration like play in a friendly

if you could play with anyone to in any position who and why, past or present? Pro wise definitely Rivaldo. Non league wise, Nigel Taylor (Ex gate player and assistant manager). He could hit a ball from anywhere with accuracy and find you What is your Favourite ground that you have played at? It would have to be Macron stadium. I played there for Clitheroe in the final of Lancashire Challenge trophy final against Chorley. Even though we lost, it was a great experience. If you were to play in a 5 a side team with any 4 players of your choice, past or present, who would you pick and why? Peter Schmeichel, Ronaldinho, Neymar and Zidane. Good shot stopper and 3 players who are great on the ball in small spaces What was the first shirt you ever owned? Did you have a name on the back of your shirts? AC Milan If you could bring 3 PL players to Squires Gate on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Rashford (direct, great pace), David Silva (great vision) John Terry (experience) What is the last thing you do before you walk out onto the pitch prior to kick off? I don’t really have a thing if I’m honest What is our expectations from Rest off season and where would like us to finish at end of season? I expect us to compete against every team that we will be facing for the rest of the season. I want us to at least finish in top 10

Q&A This week we caught up with Gate Defender Paull Carroll. Paul joined Gate at the start of the season from AFC Blackpool, we interviewed his and found out about his time so far at gate and about football in general. What encouraged you to start playing football? Which players inspired you as a kid?

Rather than a ground, as they didn’t have one at the time, I’d say FCUM as you were generally playing in front of crowds unusual at our level My Mum worked at Man Utd for 17 years, so There has been goals galore at Squires Gate this and they had a they came with a repertoire of from a very early age I was immersed in football season, what is the mentality behind the team songs/chants/flares….probably as close to pro either going to games or just even hearing stocompared to last season? level experience as im likely to get. ries from my mum etc. As a child Bryan Robson With not being here last year its hard to comwas my hero and fortunate enough that one day If you could change one rule in the game, what pare, but clearly we go out to win every game & he took the time to come and sit with me for would it be and why? try to do that in a positive manner not by looking lunch whilst I was waiting for my mum, a nice to nick games, but we also don’t know when we If you were to play in a 5 a side team with any 4 small gesture but one I’ll always remember. are beaten, we’ve come from behind in a numplayers of your choice, past or present, who What is your first ever memory of playing foot- ber of games & there is a strong mental belief would you pick and why? ball? Did things to do!! I joined Dean Sports FC at about 9 Hillingdon Borough where we were disappointed you have a name on the back of your shirts? & the earliest games I really remember were the to lose 2-0 to two counter attacks, and probably Utd Shirt, think it might have been the sharp QF & Final of the Manchester County Cup which my worst moment on a pitch when I dislocated viewcam one, but no, no names on the back. we won I think I was 11/12, I’ve even got the my ankle & broke my leg against silsden. I was video somewhere & Danny Higginbotham played out for 9 months after being told by the consult- If you could bring 3 PL players to Squires Gate for the other team. on a free transfer, who would you sign and ant I’d never play again. What is your favourite celebration when you score a goal? What is the best celebration you’ve ever seen? I don’t score enough to really have a celebration, but if I did have one it wouldn’t be the Seear chest bump!! Haha. If you could pick one team for Squires Gate to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against? I’d have to say a Brazilian national team, just so you could not touch the ball for 90 mins

and realise how bad I really was, plus great for the pre-season fitness chasing them for 90.

Who would you say has been the best opposition to come to Gate this season, and who has been the toughest to play against within your time here? Padiham, 4-1 probably flattered us that day they hardly gave us a kick, we’re a very strong powerful side solid at the back and a threat up top. What is your Favourite ground that you have played at?

I don’t have superstitions unlike some I can think of! What is your expectations from Rest off season and where would like us to finish at end of season? Continue the goals & tighten up at the back, we can definitely push ourselves for a top 10 finish Prediction for the game? 2-0 Gate

INTRODUCING

WINSFORD UNITED Everything you need to know about today’s visitors This afternoon we welcome Winsford United FC to The Brain Addison Stadium. Winsford united are coming into this game with 10 with so far this season and sitting In 14th just above Squires Gate. Gate and Winsford has played each other a massive 23 times since 2002 with Winsford wining 11 and gate with 7 and 4 draws times so today will be tough games looking at the record. This will be the first side these this season and both will be looking to win this going in to the away game in March.

Winsford United come into the game on the back or a massive 3-1 win away to Irlam also a loss to Stockport County where they took them all the way to penalties and lost 5-4 in the shootout after 4-4 after extra time. Last Season Winsford finished 14th with 52 points and 14 wins, Winsford will be looking for more of the same in terms of league position.

THE BOSS: LEE DUCKWORTH Lee joined Winsford united at aged 17 in 1998. he also played 2 summers in America in between season at Winsford whilst at university. He then left Winsford to sign for Newcastle town n 2004/2005 season and finished to Fleetwood Town In the North West Counties Premier. After that he then resigned for Winsford in 2006 to helped winsford win the NWCFL 1st Division title and then after that his talent was recognise by new Formed 1874 Northwich to become their Assistant player manager and with in the first season help them to a 3rd place.

Position: Defender App: 31 Goals: 4

Stadium: St Luke’s Barton Stadium

Much like ourselves the player/manager is a key man in the side. The left back has plenty of experience at this level and higher and will be a key influence in the back four. He's played every game for Winsford so far this season, something which no one else in the squad has done.

Capacity: 3,000

If gate wants to score today they will have to be there best to be a handful for lee and his others defender in today game.

Manager: Lee Duckworth Chairman: Mark Loveless Record attendance: 8,000 Website: ww.winsfordunited.co.uk Twitter: @winsfordunited 2015/16 position: 14th

MIDDLE OF THE PARK Scott Taylor Position: Midfielder App: 25 Goals: 4 The nippy little winger was a danger against Gate last season and looks to have kept up his good form this season. Predominantly right sided, lets hope he's less of a danger this season. He's found the net four times so far. Scott will be a handful for gate defender today with his pacey and skills he will be running up and down the winger and getting in as many cross as possible. Scott not got too many goals this season but I betting on him to score a few more with a bit of the season till to go.

THE FINISHER Kyle Riley Position: Striker App: 32 Goals: 19 The big man up top has been a threat at the level for the past couple of years. Always causes a problem in and around the box and has the presence to bring other players into the game. Currently Winsford's top goal scorer with 19 goals. Kyle will be a real handful in the box today for gate Defence and gate will be there best to keep Kyle out in todays game. Kyle is Winsford top goal scorer and I have no doubt he will be there for the remained off the season.

THE BLUES HISTORY Winsford United were founded in 1883, as Over Wanderers and played football in the Welsh Combination Football League. They changed their name and moved to their current ground, the Barton Stadium (then called the Bean Latham Playing Field), a few years later. However, after excessive spending, the club soon folded. They re-formed just before the outbreak of the First World War, and re-grouped after this had finished under a committee led by Mr. R. G. Barton, becoming a founder member of the Cheshire League. From then until the late 1970s, Winsford United played football locally in Cheshire. Highlights of this period included one FA Cup first round appearance, against Peterborough United, and Cheshire league wins in 1920–21 and 1976–77. During this period, in the late 1970s, the club also reached the quarter finals of the FA Trophy and featured future Welsh international goalkeeper Neville Southall. The Cheshire League merged with other regional divisions to become the North West Counties Football League in 1982, with Winsford doing sufficiently well to enter the Northern Premier League Division One upon its formation in 1987. They were promoted from that in 1992, and enjoyed their highest ever finish as runners up of the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 1992–93. They also reached the FA Cup First Round for a second time, losing to Wrexham, and won the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup. The successful team was broken up, however, when manager Mike McKenzie moved on to local rivals Witton Albion.

LAST TIME OUT

IRLAM 1 WINSFORD UNITED 3 PREMIER DIVISION/SATURDAY 21ST JANUARY 2017/SILVER STREET /ATT:69 Winsford almost returned to their habit of conceding early goals and in the first minute Christian Lawlor was presented with an unguarded net but he put the ball wide of the target. The Blues were finding it hard to put a meaningful attack together in the early stages and the hosts looked the most likely to open the scoring with Matthew Boland’s speculative lob drifting just wide of the upright. GOAL!! Irlam opened the scoring on 23 minutes by way of the penalty spot when Lawlor was perhaps harshly adjudged to have been hauled down by Sam Parr and Steve Mills stepped up to convert. Both teams were finding it hard to play good football on the clinging surface and it was difficult to remember one clear cut chance for the visitors in the first period. SECOND HALF Winsford opened the second half brightly with Brandon Moores’ shot being deflected for a corner and Liam Collins’ goalbound effort being blocked. The Blues had the ball in the net on 63 minutes but the Referee ruled out James Rothwell’s strike for an earlier push.

GOAL!! Man-of-the-Match Rothwell was in action again on 75 minutes, releasing Moores down the right but his run into the box was halted by Richard Peter’s crunching tackle. The Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and at the same time producing a red card, sending the Irlam defender in the direction of the changing rooms. Kyle Riley stepped up to send the ball straight down the middle and high into the centre of the net. The visitors were clearly on top at this stage and looked the more likely to take the three points. GOAL!! A free kick awarded on 82 minutes gave Player/Manager Lee Duckworth the chance to direct the ball into the box and his strike was perfectly placed to find Rothwell who converted from the edge of the six-yard box. To their credit Irlam did not give up the chase and as full time approached Winsford were put under severe pressure but the whole defence and in particular new signing Jack Taylor and local youngster Josh Perry, was on top form as attack after attack was repelled. GOAL!! Two minutes into injury time the result was put beyond any doubt when debutant goalkeeper Matthew Green spotted Moores waiting unguarded on the halfway and he launched the ball perfectly for Moores to collect and after carryiWhite from the narrowest of angles for what was the goal of the game ng the ball forwards down the right wing, driving hard under home Number One Lee. A fine battling second half show by Winsford and a thoroughly deserved three points in their fourth consecutive league win

VIEW FROM AWAY END

JASON LOCKE

In our regular feature, we ask away fans to give us an insight into their expectations for the season, about their time watching their club and some general football questions. This week, we caught up with Jason Locke, we found out about what his expectations was this season. we also found out if he was a manager of a 5 a side team who will be In it, we also found out his most memorable and game for at Winsford

Deigo Costa. (Choice 3) All teams need a real ugly player to scare opposition and if Scott Taylor wich 1874, Yes they share our ground but we did dont play then we dont have one. beat them 0-4. The next best is West Didsbury Have you been to Squires Gate before? If and Chorlton.

What are your expectations for the season Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? after your 14th Place finished last season? Obviously the best away ground I been is North10th place will be an improvement from last season. This is Ducky's 1st full season so a new learning curve for him which he is doing brilliantWhich players do you think will be the ly. After a decent start with nice FA cup run we hit a slippy patch losing 7 on trot. With alot of biggest threat to gate? credit to the board they stuck by Ducky, Kev and We have a few threats so to name a few BranTic and have been rewarded with a great don, Scott, Kyle, JJ, Nath. run and some fantastic performances.

What has been the most memorable moWhat improvements do you think need to ment and game for you within your time be made to improve on last seasons finish? watching Winsford United Consistency, I think most fans would say this but at this level we hardly have the same 15 players 2 weeks running. So to keep getting the players to play well is a credit to Ducky and his team.

After a up and down start to the first half of the season what are your expectations for the rest of the season?. For the players to keep giving all they have for 90 minutes. Us fans love watching players give their all, an example would be Dale Jennings who just keeps going at full pelt if we winning 4-0 or losing 4-0. If this happens we easy make top 10 and possibly higher. I personally would want to put any pressure on the team.

What teams Has been the best opponent so far this season? In the Cups we have played teams a few leagues above us and have done our town proud. We went Whitby and got a 3-3 draw in FA Cup.( losing replay in last minute of extra time). Then lost to Stockport County on pens after a 4-4 extra time draw. In our league AFC Bootle and Runcorn Town been best opponents so far

Most memorable moment was away to Ashton when their female physio had a race with our male Physio Steve. From dugout to 6 yard box, Ashton physio left our Steve for dust....... Memorable game was beating our friends 1874 4-0 on boxing day. St Lukes Barton Stadium was packed the blue crowd was rocking. And we even had fans run on pitch to celebrate. The beauty of non league football

Which players will be key for you this season? Key players for me will be the forwards as you only win games by scoring goals. We have 4 great forwards Kyle, Nath, JJ and Liam. So if we keep them fit and provide them we should score goals which hopefully win matchesI

so, what was the score?

This my 1st trip to Squires Gate If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Winsford United players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why GK Schmichel. Best I seen on BPL Defence. Lee Duckworth. Simply a Winsford United Legend and current Player Manager. Midfield. Gerrard. Best ever BPL player. Midfield. Danny Kerr. Fittest player in non league football got a bit of everything with just his goal scoring letting him down. Striker. Luis Suarez. Do I really need to explain ? Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Been Wembley to watch Wigan Athletic in FA Cup. And some say the magic of the cup is dead. Ideal scenario would be England in Euro or World Cup final. Failing that Winsford to win FA Vase Are you looking forward to the second half othe second and what do you expected to see from your team

f you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and Really excited for 2nd half of season as there a why? few teams we didnt turn up against so I be exDavid De Gea. (Choice 1) Every team needs to have a great keeper, we have a couple, and De Gea the best.

pecting the lads to wanna show we are alot better than previously. I expect to see full effort and players play for team not themselves

Albert Moreno. (Choice 2) He sits on Liverpool bench each week as not quite good enough so if he wants to get better he may aswell come and learn from Englands best left back ... Lee Duckworth

Prediction for tonight’s game? Todays game be a 3-1 Winsford win

SQUIRES GATE 1 WINSFORD UNITED 3 TUESDAY 22ND MARCH 2016 The game started in favour of Winsford with the mid table side still looking like they had something to play for. The visitors didn't give Gate time on the ball and dominated in midfield where they outnumbered Gate. Gate struggled to get the ball forward and find with either Buchan or Tanser up front until they'd settled around 15 minutes in. Mark Buchan did well to get past player/manager Lee Duckworth in the corner but his ball to find his strike partner, just fell the wrong side of him. After either side had early chances, the game turned very end to end. Gate had a chance from a corner after Mckennas shot was deflected into Highams path who won the corner. From the corner Winsford cleared and went down the other end to narrowly miss wide of the post. Gate would take the lead in the game after 21 minutes. A quick long throw from Ferguson sailed over the Winsford defence to find Buchan. He ran onto the ball and hit it first time past the helpless keeper. The Scotsman showing his quality with the first time finish. Winsford always posed a threat throughout the game and equalised on 34 minutes. The ball played diagonal to Taylor's feet on the wing. He took the ball down and beat Ferguson before striking across goal into the opposite corner. The game continued to be an end to end game with both teams looking to take the lead. First McKenna then Tanser having half chances but both failing to find the target. The second half saw Winsford start the better of the two teams and Gate chasing the game as the visitors looked to keep possession. The second half saw a lot of half chances for both but neither really had the quality to take the lead. Had Winsford had better quality up front they could have been in the lead with several chances on goal. Winsford did take the lead but it could have been avoided for Gate. Mistakes at the back saw Kyle Riley slip the ball under Thompson and but the visitors in the lead. Then the turning point came in the game and Gates spirits rose. Winsfords centre back sent off for a second yellow lifting Gates spirit. Chances for Gibson and Trout followed but Gate really were unlucky not till hit the target. Winsford scored a third soon after, another mistake at the back allowing Riley in again to add his second

WINSFORD UNITED 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 SATURDAY 9TH APRIL 2016 Squires Gate made it four games without scoring and six games without a win as they went down 2-0 away at Winsford.

Gate were missing defender Josh Westwood who had been superb so far at the back but welcomed back player/ manager Danny Penswick in his place Gate had some early scrappy shots to start the half as they pressured the home side. Ryan Tanser and Joe Noblet both had early chances but neither connected with the ball as they would have likedAgainst the run of play the homeside took the lead. The ball played over the top from defence found the run of Ryan Mellor who hit the ball first time to beat Woods in goal. The score line was a harsh one on Gate but had they had taken the early chances it would have been a lot different. Joe Noblet was the next to try his luck after the Winsford keeper Latham scuffed his kick. The ball landed at Joes feet but he scuffed his kick and the ball dribbled back into a grateful keepers hands. Get had more than enough chances to at least equalise with both Noblet, Stayte and Gibson having chances as the half came to an end. Neither team really had a clear chance until ten minutes into the second half. Jamie Gibson working hard to put the keeper under pressure to put the ball out. But Gate couldn't capitalise from his good work from the corner which came to nothing. The game started to settle with neither team really creating a chance. But then the homeside saw their chance and struck again. The ball played in from the right hand side found Winsford captain Kyle Riley to head past Woods. Gates best chance of the second half came from a Freekick. Joe Noblet fired the ball into the penalty spot but Ryan Tanser could only head over. That would be Gates last chance of a disappointing second half. Winsford happy to see out the point whilst Gate didn't look like threatening with heads dropped. Winsfords last chance of the game had Gates hearts in mouths. The homeside having a goal ruled out in the 91st minute for a foul on Josh Woods

MORRIS HAT-TRCIK SEALS ALL 3 POINTS AT HOME TO AFC LIVERPOOL SQUIRES GATE 3 AFC LIVERPOOL1 SATURDAY 30TH JANAUARY 2016

Gate made two changes from last Saturdays defeat away at Abbey Hey with Mike Hall and Mark Buchan, who picked up a shoulder injury in Saturdays game, replaced by Daniel Morris and Jamie Gibson. Gate made the best possible start to this game and took the lead after two minutes. First Jamie Gibson’s shot was deflected for a corner. This was fired in to find Danny Morris on his first start for the club free at the front post to head home! Ryan Tanser could have made it 2-0 for Gate quickly after the restart after strike partner Morris fizzed the ball across the box but Tanser just couldn’t find the extra inch to meet the ball. Gates lead didn’t last long though as on the 10th minute AFC would equalise. The lethal striker Ryan Cox, who already has over 20 goals this season, catching Fletcher off his line first time to equalise. There wasn’t much Fletcher could have done differently the shot coming out of the blue from 30 yards out caught everyone by surprise. Gate looked dangerous on the break and as the ball was cleared from a Liverpool corner Gate broke. Unfortunately Gates counter came to nothing as Tansers cross went out but the opportunity was clear with Liverpool pushing so many men forward. Minutes later the visitors had the chance to take the lead but Barry’s shot cannoned off the bar as Gate soaked up the pressure. Captain Richards and Joe Noblet linked well down the right hand side as part of a good flowing move for Gate but the latter ran out of room on the edge of the box and he tried to beat his man. Gate had a chance from a free kick soon after. The wind caught the ball, which was eventually found by Westwood who headed down to Morris, but his shot was fired over. The second half bought a sour note for Gate as Alex Colquhoun went down under a heavy elbow from AFC’s left back. Thankfully after a long period of stoppage he was back to his feet, soon to be substituted for Stayte. It was Stayte who would set up Gates second goal. His ball sent Ryan Tanser through in behind the Liverpool defence but his shot bounced off the post. But Danny Morris was in the right place at the right time to fire into the roof of the net for his and Gates second of the game. Liverpool had the chance to level but Josh Westwood was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball wide before an AFC attacker could touch the ball. Gates third came in the 80th minute. A free kick sent in by Joe Noblet found the head of Danny Morris who leapt highest to put Gate 3-1 up. Ben Fletcher made sure of the points in the 90th minute with a quality double save to deny AFC.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY In our regular feature, we take a look back on this week in football history. `

THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF MATTHIAS SINDELAR

1939

On 23 January 1939, 35-year old Austrian star forward Matthias Sindelar was found dead, along with his girlfriend, Camilla Castagnola, at her Vienna apartment. Although the official records attribute their deaths to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, rumors persist of murder and suicide. Nicknamed "the Paper Man" due to his height and slim build, Sindelar spent his entire professional career with FK Austria Vienna, joining them in 1924. He debuted for the Austrian national team in September 1926, scoring a goal in a 2-1 win over Czechoslovakia. He soon became an integral member of the Wunderteam, winning the 1932 Central European International Cup, taking silver in the 1936 Summer Olympics, and finishing fourth at the 1934 World Cup. In all, Sindelar made 43 official appearances for Austria, scoring 27 goals. Following Austria's annexation by Germany in 1938, Sindelar declined to play for the new unified team despite repeated requests by German manager Sepp Herberger. Although he cited age as the basis for his refusal, others took it as a sign of protest against the Nazi regime. Thus, when he was found dead a few months later, conspiracy theories ran rampant. Some suggested that he committed suicide in order to avoid Nazi persecution, while others suggested that he and Castagnola had been murdered by the Nazis for harboring Jewish sympathies. While one the two chimneys in Castagnola's apartment was known to be defective, making carbon monoxide poisoning the most likely explanation for their deaths, one of Sindelar's friends gave a 2005 interview suggesting otherwise. In 2005, a BBC documentary crew spoke with Egon Ulbrich, a longtime friend of Sindelar's, who claimed that a Vienna official had been bribed to record the deaths as accidental. According to Ulbrich, Nazi rules prevented state funerals for victims or murder or suicide, so the declaration of Sindelar's death as accidental ensured that he could be buried with full honors.

SKY SPORTS SACK ANDY GRAY AND RICHARD KEYS

On 24 January 2011, Sky Sports suspended commentators Andy Gray and Richard Keys for making sexist remarks. Although the suspension was originally announced as indefinite, it proved to be permanent, as their contracts were terminated soon afterward. The pair had provided commentary for Sky Sports since the start of the first Premier League season in 1992. On 22 January 2011, they were covering a match between Wolves and Liverpool that included a female assistant referee, Sian Massey. When they believed their microphones were turned off, they discussed their belief that women "don't know the offside rule." Keys went further, anticipating a mistake by Massey (she did not make one, as her only offside call was correct). Keys then criticized a recent column written by West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady, saying "The game's gone mad. See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Yeah. Do me a favour, love." After the recording leaked, their comments drew widespread condemnation. The pair were scheduled for the Chelsea-Bolton match on 24 January, but before kick-off Sky Sports announced their suspension, saying the comments were "totally inappropriate" and "inexcusable from anyone at Sky Sports." One day later, the network ended their relationship with Gray, citing a separate incident from the previous December. Keys, meanwhile, resigned on 26 January after the release of previous comments of his own. The two have since moved on and now provide commentary and analysis for TalkSport and Al Jazeera.

IT’S ALMOST LIKE NOBODY WANTED TO WIN IT On 26 January 1992, every player on the pitch at the end of extra time in the African Cup of Nations Final got to take a penalty kick as Côte d'Ivoire beat Ghana, 00 (11-10). Ghana entered the tournaments as favorites, based on the presence of their star midfielder and captain Abedi Pele, the reigning African Player of the Year. He was the team's high scorer through the earlier rounds and provided the match winner against Zambia in the group stage, but was suspended for the final after picking up a second yellow card against Nigeria in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Côte d'Ivoire advanced to the final on the back of their outstanding defense, having not conceded a single goal in the tournament. On offense, the team was wellbalanced, with each of their goals scored by a different player. In the final, the day's best chance fell to Ghana, as striker Tony Yeboah chipped the ball over keeper Alain Gouaméné (pictured) and into the path of Ghana midfielder Prince Polley Opoku, but Opoku sent his shot over the bar. The match remained scoreless through extra time, setting up the penalty shootout. There, the balls flowed into the goal until Ghana's Isaac Asare missed his shot, but Côte d'Ivoire's Joël Tiéhi did the same with the next attempt. The teams went through twelve kickers each, with the last shot taken by Ghana defender Anthony Beffoe. He drove the ball into the waiting hands of Gouaméné to end the match at 0-0 (11-10).
