P R O L O G U E Hello, my name is Sreejith Krishnan Kunjappan and I am a transportation designer with 1+ year of experience working as a freelancer and in a design studio as well. I have a master’s degree in transportation design and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. I have previous experience of 4+ years as a CATIA design engineer before moving to transportation design. Let me begin this introduction with my take on transportation design. I am a natural born artist and I have always relished sharing my artwork with the audience. My aim is to combine my artistic skills with my passion for automobiles and technological innovations which is why I am pursuing this career. To me transportation design is a discipline that merges art with engineering and science to translate my wildest ideas in the best possible way into products or ‘end results’ intended to satisfy the customer’s desires. The very basic nature of this profession which follows no rules or pre decided path to reach the end result is what has driven me. Every day in the design studio gives me a new learning experience and I wish to continue learning and enhancing my skills forever. Through the forthcoming pages I wish to share some of my works in transportation design. Your comments would be appreciated and I hope to receive a positive response to discuss a job opportunity. Thank you for your time and consideration.

JAGUAR D-TYPE RACE VISION

The D-Type was one of the iconic cars produced by Jaguar. What would be the future version of the D-Type? Here is my interpretation of this idea.

1955 JAGUAR D-TYPE - DNA AND PACKAGE To start, I studied the package and design DNA of the 1955 D-Type referring images and information on the internet. Aviation inspired styling and monocoque construction made the D-Type ahead of it’s time. Certain features were unique to this design like the twin cockpit tubs and the vertical rear fin.

PININFARINA LIBERTA’

Master Program in Transportation Design 2014-2016 Thesis Project sponsored by Pininfarina In the mobility of the future, in the name of environmental sustainability and autonomous driving, the car should be valued not so much for the speed or the absolute performance, but rather for the general feeling of “well being and emotions that it will be able to offer. In that scenario, what form might have the values elegance, passion, sportsmanship - that have always distinguished the Pininfarina design?

Key idea: The hammock is a symbol of comfort and relaxation. Our key idea for this project is to have hammocks in our car and bring in a new expression of comfortable road travel.

PININFARINA LIBERTA’ DIFFERENT MODES

RELAX MODE: The seats are in hammock form. Perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view while the vehicle drives autonomously.

DRIVE MODE: The seats transform into a regular seat form. Depending on the requirement the seats change form from a normal passenger seat to a more sporty bucket seat.

Switching from Relax mode to Drive mode: The hammock transforms into a seat. Steering column emerges out of the center console. Head protection moves forward.

In Relax mode both the seats are in hammock form offering perfect comfort and relaxation to the user

When the mode is changed from Relax to Drive the steering column emerges out of the center console and shifts into position. As this happens, the hammock converts into a seat and the head protection moves forward.

NISSAN I-RIDE

With growing amount of air pollution, the future of the motorcyclist seems dull. But what if an automobile could provide a clean air environment for the occupant and the thrill of riding a motorcycle at the same time? I am trying to answer this question through this project.

Alarming! Air pollution is the world’s biggest environmental risk to health, and it “continues to rise at an alarming rate” - WHO It is especially a problem in urban areas: only one in 10 people live in a city that complies with the WHO air quality guidelines - BBC Because of heavy smog, residents of twice before heading to work on

Beijing have bicycles. -

to think Siemens

Rising air pollution in many cities is killing people and becomes a visible catalyst for changing mind-sets and policies across health, energy, transportation and urban design - Futureagenda By 2050, 70 percent of the world’s people will live in cities, almost as many people as are alive today - Siemens

India is one of the largest motorcycle markets in the world which means motorcycling is a favourite activity among Indians. Indian cities are also among the top in terms of air pollution levels. How do all these factors affect the future of motorcycling? What would be the motorcycling scene in 2025? Mindsets may change and many might decide not to ride motorcycles in cities because of growing health problems due to high air pollution. But there may still be people unwilling to give up the thrill of leaning into corners. There may still be people who wish to cut through traffic on the way to office. There may still be people who wish to maintain their hobby of weekend riding. The Nissan i-Ride aims to meet their expectations.

audi R9 panigale

Audi and Ducati are 2 iconic brands under the VW umbrella. If Audi makes a supercar inspired from the Ducati Panigale superbike what would be the outcome? This is my imagination of this idea.

KEY CONCEPT: Designing a supercar inspired from a superbike is something not really uncommon. So I wanted to bring in some totally different idea into my design. My key concept here is to have an independent ‘driver module’ in the car that has all the drive controls with drive by wire technology. This driver module tilts into corners just like a motorcycle while cornering.

KEY OBSERVATIONS FROM BOTH BRANDS

Features I want to incorporate into my design: Audi Singleframe grille, sharp and edgy theme, floating surfaces, forward stance, centrally placed driver, rear engined Quattro enabled architecture, driver focussed interior, track oriented, driver tilting into corners

MERCEDES UNIMOG URBAN TRUCK

Cities are ever growing skywards. Space on the streets is decreasing with increasing number of vehicles. In this scenario, what would be the future Unimog for the urban environment? Here is my idea of a future dump truck.

UNIMOG BRAND HISTORY: A range of multi-purpose medium trucks capable of handling almost any terrain. Equipped with all-wheel drive feature. Strong build quality. Different varaints available for different needs. First developed in the 1940’s in Germany. Production taken over my Daimler Benz in 1951.

The key concept is three way unloading. This means that the truck can unload towards the rear, right or left depending on the situation. Suitable for congested urban environments. The concept is explained below.

Electronically controlled joints that can be activated or deactivated

Truck facing this way

Unloading to the rear

Unloading to the left

Unloading to the right

PROFILE EXPLORATION: Trying to extrapolate the bison’s body shape into a suitable profile for the truck. More mass concentration towards the front and a narrow rear end make it visually mighty.

Mercedes Unimog Dump Truck Concept: The main design direction is to create a single volume appearance. So the shut line between the body and the carriage has been maintained narrow. Side body access is provided for the battery and charging point.

The bulky muscular proportions are more evident in the rear view

To unload sideways the carriage tilts and the side wall of the carriage opens up. Slide plates emerge from slits at the bottom of the carriage to ensure that the load slides away from the truck body during sideways dumping.
