REDEFINING THE BOUNDARY Concept Statement When our team started this project we observed that there was a disconnect from people and place in the urban environment. This became evident as we were exploring the history of redlining in the neighborhood that affected marginalized groups through systematic racism. We sought to deconstruct the idea of redlines as a means of oppression and walls as boundaries, and reform them as inclusive spaces.

Historical Redlining This man was one of the first blacks to own a home in the then all-white North Park Hill as the Post reported in 1961. The dream of raising his kids in an integrated community quickly vanished as the record number of residents fled for other areas and surrendered North and Northeast Park Hill. Some of the “Unscrupulous” Realtors were selling these near-new homes at deflated prices as part of the disinvestment and redlining which was started by fear and rumors of falling house value.

Closing Statement

We observed that there was a disconnect from people and place in the urban environment that waslargely due to redlining and other racist practices. We sought to deconstruct the idea of redlines as a means of oppression and walls as boundary, and reform them as inclusive spaces. As gentrification continues to pose a threat to minority communities, what role does architecture play in reshaping spaces and groups?
