The ideal patient-doctor relationship is really a partnership. Research has shown that a strong doctor-patient relationship leads to better medical outcomes and patient satisfaction. An important element of this partnership is communication. Open and honest exchange of information is critical to managing good health and identifying health issues as early as possible.

This means feeling comfortable asking questions, sharing health concerns and taking an active role in the exchange. Below are a few tips to enhance communication with your doctor during clinic visits:

• Start by making a list of concerns prior to the visit. It’s possible you may not have a chance to get through your entire list, so prioritizing your questions and concerns is important.

• Be prepared with the details about your symptoms, medications and any special needs you might have while in the exam room.

• Bring a trusted friend or family member. Ask them to take notes so you can pay close attention to what the physician is saying and asking. Ask them to remind you of important details or questions that you may miss.

• Following the visit, review your notes and start making preparations for the next steps. Make sure you understand what is needed for any testing, supportive therapies, new treatments and subsequent follow-up visits.
