all is finally here and I for one am very thankful as this starts my favorite time of year—for many reasons. One reason is that I’m what you’d call the ardent nonprofit supporter and this is the time of year when many nonprofits are holding their annual fundraisers. As you know everything is bigger in Texas—especially our hearts. I hope as you flip through the pages and notice the nonprofit event ads, you consider getting involved. You won’t be sorry. To get you thinking “fall forward,” we’ve packed this issue with tons of great ideas. Find inspiration in: football, see “Tailgating Texas Style,” (page 35); college, see “Making the Grade,” (page 18); fall fashion, see “Red-Haute Fall,” (pages 12 and 58); comfort food, see “Game On,” (page 48), “Powerful Lineup,” (page 46); hunting, see “Bring Home the Bacon,” (page 57); shopping, see “Canton’s First Monday Trade Days,” (page 64), “Fall Faves,” (page 74), “Hair Sympathy,” (page 75); end-of-summer entertaining, see “It’s Fall Y’all,” (page 50); and seasonal beauty, see “Ozarks Golf Wonderland,” (page 67). Like I said, packed. It was about this time nearly a decade ago (my, how time flies!) we were preparing to launch PRIME Living. Our office was buzzing with excitement as we got down to the business of who PRIME Living was going to be when it grew up. As it is true with people, it also happens with magazines that what they start out aspiring to be isn’t where they end up. We have been fortunate enough to work with some very talented photographers and journalists who, through collaboration with our amazing team, helped morph PRIME Living from regional to a Texas publication. As we celebrate PRIME’s 10th year, I’m reminded that I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up and still adding to my bucket list. Happy fall y’all!

THE COMMODORE PERRY ESTATE Plans call for the restoration of the historic landmark the Commodore Perry Estate and

the creation of an urban oasis on the property located in the heart of Austin. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate is comprised of a 10,800-square-foot Italian Renaissance-style home and formal gardens enclosed within a 10-acre walled compound on the headwaters of Waller Creek. The new luxury hotel will be managed by Auberge Resorts Collection and will encompass 53 guest rooms, flexible event space, and a destination restaurant featuring a culinary experience driven by locally sourced ingredients, including those sourced from the estate’s own organic gardens. Craig Reid, president and chief executive officer of Auberge Resorts Collection, and a former Austin resident says, “As we have with the other historic hotels in our collection, we will honor the architectural heritage of the estate while infusing the unique character that defines Austin.” aubergeresorts.com/perry-estate-austin

pumpkin? Instead of stopping by your local grocery store to pick one up, get the family together and make a trip to either Dewberry Farm in Brookshire or Barton Hill Farms in Bastrop. These farms outside of Houston and Austin open late September until early November, and for six weeks they will keep you busy, active and well-fed all day. In addition to their large pumpkin patches, these familyfriendly farms have activities galore. Find your way through a corn maze, feed some animals in a petting zoo, chow down on some barbecue, or even watch some pig races. For a wristband price of about $12 per person at both farms, the whole family can search throughout acres of land for the perfect pumpkins. bartonhillfarms.com dewberryfarm.com

MY PLATES Alumni and fans of The University of Texas now

have another way to express their support for the Longhorns with the release of the redesigned University of Texas “UT Tower” license plate. The new plate design features the iconic UT Tower entirely in the familiar shade of burnt orange. In addition to the Tower, the plate also features the burnt orange Longhorns silhouette logo and the ever-popular slogan “Hook ’em Horns” along the bottom legend of the plate. “This launch of the new Tower plate offers Lone Star residents the ability to have seven letters—or mix of letters and numbers—on the plate. This provides flexibility for many message possibilities,” says Steve Farrar, president of My Plates. myplates.com

>> FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE THAT GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

TINY TEXAS RESTAURANTS Long before there were tiny houses, there were tiny restaurants such as the Burger Bar in

Cleburne. In a red brick building that measures just 12 feet by 12 feet and seats only four at its old school counter, it once housed a pioneer wagon yard and livery stable office, a taxi dispatch station and finally the Burger Bar. The same family has been serving up hot juicy hamburgers since 1949 and the secret may be in the 100-year-old grill. Another example of a successful small place is Bailey’s Barbeque, a hole-in-the-wall joint in downtown Fort Worth. Serving good ole Texas barbecue in a signature brown bag, they are a true Texas gem. facebook.com/burgerbar49

>> FOR THE NOSTALGIC VINYL FAN

VINYL RECORDS While CDs collect dust, vinyl supply is having a hard time

keeping up with demand. The vinyl consumption trend has continued with consumer sales growing annually. Not only is the retail side growing in Texas markets, but Texas is now home to Hand Drawn Pressing, a vinyl records manufacturer in Addison. They are the manufacturing arm of Hand Drawn Records, a full-service, artist-centric independent music company based in Dallas. To celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding independently owned record stores in the U.S. and thousands of similar stores internationally, Record Store Day was conceived in 2008. The annual celebration continues to grow each year as more consumers are turned on to vinyl. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica. handdrawnpressing.com recordstoreday.com

>> FOR THE CENTRAL TEXAS HEALTH CARE SEEKER

TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

In 2018, Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital is planning to bring its brand of specialized medical care to Central Texas in a big way. “We are constantly evaluating new opportunities, and working to advance our mission to provide all children and women with the specialized care Texas Children’s delivers,” says Texas Children’s president and CEO Mark Wallace. “We are dedicated to providing families with the right care, in the right place, at the right time. Adding pediatric-focused urgent care, primary care and specialty care, as well as maternalfetal medicine options in Austin will help us to serve the state of Texas even more successfully.” texaschildrens.org
