INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

“I am a Painter turned Interior Architect. I like to observe my surroundings and conceive of inspiring typologies. I feel that composition & minute detail are crucial to mark-making. In Architecture, construction and part to whole relationships are important. I try & blend the rawness of spirit and material to evoke a sense. I believe building has an opportunity to learn from art. I am inspired by ancient architectures of Italy and the Byzantine. They have a strong sense of place, rooted in a language that speaks to time and the eternal quest of spirit.

1 Arcade Brief Redesign the oldest shopping mall of the United States built in 1884. The Greek Temple facade has to be retained intergrating the adjacent lots to create an Urban Lifestyle Center (Providence, RI). Concept To create a sense of belonging for the migrant youth population. The journey from one place to another in the building is at focus. Links are made. Solution From the underground discussion space radiate primary functions like urban farm, housing & retail. Plenty of walking space and niches overlook thickly vegetated plots. During winter, exposed earth, stone and snow create a natural interface.

9 Six degrees of separation Brief Exhibit 8 objects from the 18th CE within a social framework of their relationships. Concept Every person is 6 connections away from one other. This is my concept: The 6 degrees of separation. Solution The objects are housed in a permeable free-standing wooden structure held together at the top with a glass canopy. This expresses the permeable nature of social relationships that can be built & taken away as well. The visitor can enter the exhibit from any of the 6 openings and move round to explore how objects are connected socially.

13 Mapping underground Brief Design an exhibit showing the evolution of the London Tube Map. Concept The tube is underground. I wanted people to go underground to discover how the map’s evolved. Solution The ground is dug 7’. Poured concrete walls and a roof with sky lights forms the overall structure. Displays along the circulation are present at regular intervals.

17 Collonaded bridge Brief Make an element that introduces the Risd Museum to the street. Concept: A gathering space. Solution: I created a risen surface that connects the pavement to the entrance. A woden deck is used as a gathering & seating space.

19 Un-earthing Brief Re-adapt an existing space to house The Brown University’s collection of artefacts. Concept The act of un-earthing is used as the basic idea for this project. Solution Exhibits are displayed behind partition walls around the floor space. Mixed-use spaces for video, reading, studying, storage and display are configurated by drywalls. A clean, elemental space with a stepped stair and ramped approach; ribbon glazing on two sides and shingle decking on the other side, gives the building a seen/unseen presence.

25 Bistro culture Brief Retrofit a built retail space in a bustling part of town to make a cafeteria for the students and local population. Concept: Re-organizing forces. I felt this zone already had many eateries and cafes; what was needed was a place to relax and discuss ideas, in an informal setting. Solution: The building is treated like a container vessel for people pouring in from the street. There is a sharp twist in the structure at the back. It takes people upstairs.

31 The Wall apartment Brief Design an apartment for a family of 6 in downtown Providence. Concept The “Wall provides a strong division between living and working environments. Solution The wall is the dominant element in my design. Partitions on the living side divide space into separate zones, leaving the historic facade untouched.
