Global Village RISD | Urban Lifestyle Centre | Architecture + Adaptive Reuse | Providence, RI
Brief | The Westminster Arcade is the oldest shopping mall in the United States of America. Built in 1828, it is located in financial district, Providence. The 2008 economic downturn dwindled commerce and in 2010, it got shut to the public. This project develops the empty Arcade through a guided programmatic development of an Urban Lifestyle Center. (In collaboration with JiHan Lew). Deriving inspiration from the BMW Guggenhiem Lab and DARPAN- an Academy of Dance & Music, we try to harmonize the intention of words like ‘urban’ ‘youth’ and ‘lifestyle’ through a single move.
Concept | Amphitheatre against historical facade
Concept + Design | To observe, find paths and navigate oneself brings us closer to self-reflection. These qualities are developed spatially by creating opportunities for overlap and discussions. A central underground forum is placed on the north side and an indoor urban farm is placed on the south side. A grand staircase is created for performances that is open to the community. There are also several places to be by yourself. The urban farm is connected by a bridge to a bookstore, cafe and gallery. The arcade has restaurants, retail stores, bed & breakfast, music room and an ‘all-weather’ restaurant. A 30 storeyed residential tower is proposed on the Westminster Street side that offers affordable and compact housing to the urban population. A bikeshop is located below the grand staircase. The entrance here winds through what is a seasonal garden during the summer and a rocky landscape through the winter months. The buildings are glazed to utilize maximum daylight. 4

Repository SCAD | Comprehensive Design | Research space | Boulder, Colorado
Brief | A research space for 9 geniuses in diverse fields of study who gather to solve the next big problem of humanity. Inspired by principles of phenomenology and the unconnected logic of all matter, this project should evoke an architectural sensibility for the crisis of the 21st century. Concept + Design | Part to whole relationships and the rational and irrational geometries of architectural order inspires my design. The form follows a helical downward movement with cantilevered spaces along the external cylindrical retaining wall that houses the primary method of staircase circulation. From within, each balcony-like space is formally a jagged explosion of the sphere that seeks to create a disposition of wonder. When the person moves inward the spaces are soft and subtly rendered in wood and glass. The Community Kitchen is the heart of the design where people sit together and break bread. Food and warmth are the most primal emotions of all people. All areas except the scholar dormitories are accessible to the public.

Incubation RISD | A Studio Space | Adaptive Reuse | Providence, RI
Brief | Built in 1942, the Bank Building is home to the Furniture Design department. This project requires retrofitting the internal space architecturally without touching the facade and adjacent structural lot walls. Programmatic requirements are a Studio Space with a Multi-media Lab, Galleries, Dance studios, Black box theatre, Faculty studios, Digital fabrication and wood, metal and stone fabrication labs.
Site | White marble facade, Open skylight area, (part) Process model for elevated incubation pods
Concept + Design | Incubation is a state of latency moving toward a culmination or resolution. My design seeks to use this concept to make incubation pods using the building’s inherent quality of natural light. The pods are used as workrooms with different functions. Ambulatory space around these highlight the volume of the space so the users feel free and can inhale, exhale and breathe deeply. This has a direct relationship with the process of incubation latency and process driven nuances of a creative discipline. A gravity-less atmosphere is achieved by not building wall to wall. The beautiful skylit ceiling is retained and light channels are built inside it which transport natural light all the way to the basement. The existing foundation and walls are retained. Simple cubes are erected floor to ceiling on each level but separated from the longitudinal and cross walls of the building. These freestanding cubes are the incubation pods or work-rooms. Around these is a gallery on each level connected to the main stair via a landing. Partition walls contain restrooms. Proceeding eastward, is an ante foyer that leads one to the exit. The open air landing is a vital feature of the building site since it serves as a courtyard between adjacent buildings. 24

Above: Here the existing ceiling pattern is visible. It is retained and retro-fitted with annealed glass to be used as the 4th level for dance studios. It is accessed by the main staircase of the building. Below: A typical plan of the building. The staircase moves upward while the balconies move outwards into the open air landing.

Hydepark Studio Lotus | Residenntial | Delhi, India
A house to party with 5 rooms and a dramatic build. Conceptually inspired by the gravity and drama of materials - from heavy to light, thick to thin the plan is modern, rectilinear with open courtyards and recreational facilities. A monolithic gesture and upturning the approach of the house exaggerated by a cantilevered entrance. My contribution to the project team | Conceptual re-design, Interior finishes | Worked on material boards, plans and presentation.
