SURFACE

where we interact with the design, no longer limited to a computer screen

I’m not sold on the table top as an interactive surface, I feel like I would be hitting buttons all the time I would not mean to, what if you get water on the surface? Ect. But really any surface could respond well to interactive design, off the top of my head I thought of bookcases (like in libraries) where finding a book could be made easier. It could tell you if its been checked out, when it should be back, random info about the book Armchair of the sofa as a remote? What?

DATA

the type of information one displays

Some of the most interesting examples I found were in terms of retail. With everything moving towards online, minimal interaction, how do you bring that into real life settings? http://www.psfk.com/2012/05/online-shopping-in-real-world.html

overview

Multi-task Whiteboard The multi-task whiteboard is a device anyone has access to and can put in their home or office. It is a place to write quick notes or bits of information to oneself (just as a tradition whiteboard serves the same function). However, this multitask whiteboard then transfers these quick bits of information to another designated device (such as a phone, iPad, computer) and sorts it into the appropriate categories. A meeting gets put in the Calendar, a reminder gets put in a To-Do list, a quick note or doodle is sent to the notes application.

How it Works

Whiteboard Has the physical appearance and touch of an actual whiteboard.

Setting up Device Each whiteboard will come with a registration # one enters on their external device, therefore linking the two components

Control Panel Allows one to select where they want this information shared by tapping the corresponding dot with the marker.

meeting @ 2 p.m.

The board is touch sensitive and records the information transcribed to an external device. Therefore, even if erased - evidence of the message remains on the external device.

Answering more ?s What size is the whiteboard? Theoretically the whiteboard can be any size. For my demonstration I will use a typical hanging whiteboard one would see in an apartment or behind someone’s desk. How many devices can connect with the board? For feasibility reasons, for now I will say the board can connect with up to two devices. When writing on the board, the user will first designate which device they’re connecting to and then which application (Calendar, notes, To Do list, etc.) What does erasing the board do? When information is erased from the board, it is not erased from the external drive, but rather given a mark of distinction in order to indicate the task was erased from the board. This way, information cannot be lost if accidentally erased or if erased to make more room for new information. How many applications can one connect to the board? Right now, I see the board as having the capability to connect with up to four applications (Calendar, Reminders, Notes and Contacts). It might also be possible to let the user select the destination for each selector when registering their device. Therefore... It does not matter where on the board the information is written because you make your selection before writing. Color/Type of dry erase marker is irrelevant because it is based on touch, not ink.

This video will show someone interacting with the board, selecting where the information will be stored, writing a message and how the two devices are conected (how when you write on the board it is transcribed into one’s phone or other designated device.

This project challenged me and my design capabilities in new ways than I’ve experienced before. This is the most open ended project I’ve ever dealt with. It took some time to get comfortable enough with the project in order to successfully complete it. I would have preferred a little bit more direction in the beginning. I do not think a few parameters would have limited our brainstorming or design process. I understand one has to take initiative in design, but I feel as though even in real world projects we will be given a project direction. Overall, I am happy with my final project and felt I pushed through some of the frustrating aspects of this project to overcome it with a successful idea and presentation.
