Chairman’s Corner Thank you to all for your condolences regarding the loss of my mother who reached the ripe old age of 96, I don’t know whether I will be able to follow that. Thank you also for the donations to the British Heart Foundation Well we have had a hectic couple of months both contest wise and outside Lovely picture of Tony at events. Two RSGB contests and two outside his daughters wedding events, you can read more about these in this edition. As you are now aware we are pursuing the outside events to advertise our club and the hobby. It is surprising how much interest is shown not only by fellow armateurs but also the general public. With two shows completed we have made notes as to how we can progress to make the show more attractive. We will be having a meeting soon to discuss these events, any members wishing to become involved in any capacity whatsoever will be most welcome. After the TAS event a comment from the TAS staff was “see you next year”, also we are officially invited to the AVRO two day events next year. These events allow you the members to participate by getting involved either on the stand or just visiting. It gives us encouragement to organise more of the same. As I keep saying “It is your, the members, club” the committee are there to organise the running of the club. We need your input, contact by email, phone, in person or on the club nets.

It is a short chairman’s corner this time as with funeral arrangements and now my daughter’s wedding I don’t know whether I am coming or going, as they say. 73, 88 till next time Tony M0SAV Chairman

Silent Key - Wilf Johnson M0ABW (24.07.17) News has come to Bernard G3SHF of the passing of Wilf M0ABW. Wilf was a club member for many years and was active from Romiley on both HF and VHF. Very sad to hear of his passing after a long illness. Our thoughts go out to the family of Wilf. 5

Special Events Station GB0XWB Transport and Aviation Event - Runway Visitors Park Manchester Airport The SRS Events team put on their first outdoor event in July at the Transport and Aviation Event at the Runway Visitors Park at Manchester Airport. The team did two days at the event and had two stations running on HF and VHF, using the special events callsign GB0XWB (to celebrate the Singapore A350 starting service at MAG). A few pics below from Dave Almond SWL

The Events Committee Evan M0TJU, Neil M6NAE, Heth M6HNS, Nigel 2E0CKA and Tony M0SAV Missing from the picture are Phil M0XYA and Nigel M6YKK 8

Special Events Station GB0AHM Avro Heritage Museum Event - Woodford This is the second event that the team put on, literally two weeks after the TAS event. This was the first time the Avro Museum had put an event on like this, and it was a major success. With a flyby from the Lancaster Bomber and Avro Anson, and a radio out of a Lancaster Bomber on show which had been rebuilt by our own John 2E0GCX the day was a great success.

All the images from both events are available to view on facebook or view our ‘onedrive’ storage drive - please email me and I will send you a link. Aswell as the events team, can I send a special thanks to Neil’s daughter (m6NAE) for the catering for both events and to Bob M6TMA for the loan of his collapsable gazebo, and to all those members (and families) who turned up to support us. 9

Stockport Radio Society Rally welcomes record numbers Traditionally held on the second Saturday of July, this year, 2017 was no exception as Stockport Radio Society (SRS) opened its doors to traders and visitors looking to seal some deals on all things radio-related - and a few items not so. While most people were still asleep, SRS members toiled away, getting the interior of club HQ at Walthew House, ready for buyers, sellers and the just plain curious, with one trader arriving at 6am! Heather, M6HNS, said: “Our stewards (members who had offered their services), helped traders into the club ready for the start of the rally. “With the usual opening time of 10am still 45 minutes away, and the traders all set and ready to go, we decided to open the doors to the throng of waiting attendees at 9.15 am, something that was much appreciated.”

SRS chairman Tony M0SAV, said: ”With the smell of bacon butties filling the air and traders and visitors fed and watered, the rally went off at a pace. “Despite one of the (relatively) local major retailers holding their rally on the same day, we welcomed a record number of buyers through the doors of club HQ, and witnessed many people arriving with empty hands leaving laden down with their purchases.”

10

Closing the doors at just before 2.30pm the traders packed up and said bye bye until next year. SRS would like to thank everyone that help make the rally a success, including: rally organiser Nigel G0RXA, stewards Nigel 2E0CKA, Evan M0TJU, Tony M0SAV, Neil M6NAE, Bob M6TMA and everyone that helped put Walthew House back to how it was before the rally. A final thank you goes out to Dave Wilson M0OBW for presenting SRS with their Club of the Year Trophy 2016 and we hope to see you all again next year. 2 of our Stewards Ed 2E0CFM & Bob M6TMA

NFD results for 2017 The Peak Contest Group took part in the 24 hour CW contest in early June, in the Low Power (100W) Assisted Section. (Assisted meaning we could use the DX Cluster and the Reverse Beacon Network to locate stations). As has been the practice for a number of years we used the call G3LX/P. I'm very pleased to say SRS came 2nd in this section, the winner being De Montfort University ARS M2A/P. As always we look closely at the stations we compete with to see if we can make improvements for next time and the following observations will be considered.

Presentation on Radio Via the Internet Gareth Jackson M6IGJ did a first class presentation on Tuesday evening on Radio via the Internet using hand radio's, connected via a link/node and explained the technical bits on how easy it is to complete. He then did a practical demonstration using with his equipment. We could hear stations calling from different parts of the world, and 5B4 call from Pathos in Cyprus. Gareth did opening contact, and as you see from the pictures Arthur G0EOM who also has 5B4 call wanted to speak to him. Gareth handed the hand set to Arthur then had a QSO with the guy, The evening ended with a lot of questions that Gareth was only too pleased to answer. l thank Gareth on behalf of the members and we show our appreciation in in the normal way and look forward to the next one.

Article and Image from Alan G0ROW Welcome to the following New Members Thank you for joining SRS and we hope you enjoy the nights with us. I was very pleased to receive this notification from Bob Glasgow GM4UYZ who has been a member of Stockport Radio Society for a number of years. On behalf of Stockport Radio Society can I say Congratulations (Heth M6HNS – SRS Secretary and Media Manager)

What a Surprise…. A BEM (British Empire Medal)

On the 17 June it was announced that I have been awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Under the BEM Honours list which is officially published in the London Gazette see below the official extract:

British Empire Medal 2017-06- (The Stationery Office), St Crispins, Duke Street, Norwich, NR3 1PD, 01603 622211, customer.services@tso.co.uk280375261961

Civil Division

14

Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood St. James’s Palace, London SW1 17 June 2017 THE QUEEN has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of Her Majesty’s Birthday, to approve the award of the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) to the undermentioned:

Robert Edward GLASGOW Secretary, Cockenzie and Port Seton Amateur Radio Club for services to Amateur Radio, the community and charity in South East Scotland. What can I say I was absolutely overwhelmed and even speechless, hard thing for me that is… I have no idea who nominated me and to who it was or were I must thank 99you from the bottom of my heart that you feel that I deserve the honour. I see what I do is just being me and I love doing it, I do have the odd down moments but being a positive person you just get through them and move on. It is a great honour so many, many thanks. When it is to be presented I have no idea as the letter I received said that they would make contact later. We will also be invited to the Queen’s Birthday party which I assume will be next year. Yvonne the XYL is now in panic mode about a dress, hat, etc, etc and I am in panic mode as those that know me it means I must disturb the moths and spend some money…… There is a plus point though when it comes to going to the bar I won’t need to spend any money, royalty doesn’t carry money so they must be treated …. I know I won’t get away with that will I but I have to try and keep the “Bobby Deep Pockets” tag going. Serious though it is a pleasure to accept this award on behalf of Amateur Radio. It is a great hobby. Thanks again to whoever nominated me. 15

The ‘Windy Isle’ - Arranmore Island Stockport Radio Societies IOTA 2017 Entry EJ8KO (Article by Bernard G3SHF / Photos Pete M1PTR)

After an uneventful journey through North Wales to Holyhead and across Ireland from Dublin, our expedition finally reached the northwest coast. From there the ferry journey from Burtonport, Donegal to Arranmore Island was relatively quiet, with sunshine, a smooth sea and a fair breeze to see us on our way. This contrasted well with our arrival in the remote west of the island where the lighthouse and cottages are situated 150 feet above the fierce Atlantic waves. These were being whipped up by high winds, crashing into blackened rocks protecting rugged cliffs from the relentless pounding seas. Not without reason is the thinly grassed cliff top treeless, supporting only a few sheep and seasoned tuft cutters. Our journey had started early, 03.45am, quietly in Stockport travelling to collect our 80 foot trailer tower heavily loaded with stakes and ample supplies of Uncle Tom’s blue rope. By 8.00am we were safely aboard Irish Ferries ‘Epsilon’ departing Holyhead meeting other team members for an Irish Breakfast that finally woke us up. The familiar journey from Dublin saw us arrive in Burtonport with the local ferry behind schedule and the crew literally running up and down the slipway to quickly reverse cars and trailers onto the ferry. Our trailer must have been the largest and was last to be reversed on board worryingly quickly down the centre of two rows of cars with barely an inch to spare next to a gleaming Mercedes – but I guess these lads do this all day long! Evening saw the two trailers unloaded, the lighthouse cottages occupied when our taxi arrived for our supper trip to the metropolis followed by light, black refreshment. On Wednesday and Thursday the cottage lounge was stripped of furniture and our four contest tables installed with our rigs and computers. Outside was another story with high winds, heavy squalls driving our antenna teams indoors from time to time. Despite the weather, we quickly got our long wire and folded dipole listening antennas up and our first Spiderbeam erected after careful retuning at ground level.

16

Tommy-EI2HXB Tom-M0DCG & Peter-EI4JR

During the course of the day we had the first of our visits in the form of Tommy EI2HXB, Ian MI1CCU and Peter EI4JR who had contacted a number of our team members while they were activating Lichtenstein earlier in the year. It was great to meet the guys and chat. Peter EI4JR took the opportunity to capture much of our efforts on camera by taking many pictures of the team and station set-up leaving us with lasting memories and a large pack of ‘The Black Stuff’. Thanks lads. n.b. Peter swiftly put together a very professional video of the day and this is available on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWsSOASYmF0 We also had a visit from Fred ON6QR and his XYL. They were hoping to enter the IOTA contest from Tory Island about 25 miles north of Arranmore. Unfortunately their ferry had been cancelled due to the bad weather so they operated QRP from Arranmore. Thursday evening saw our third visit to the metropolis for our daily fix of ‘The Black Stuff’. (There’s a pattern emerging here!)

17

On our return in the taxi the wind was even stronger and fairly howling through the sash window in my room despite attempts with much tape to quieten the noise down. Friday morning arrived revealing the shattered remains of our Spiderbeam. After a quick planning meeting we removed the remains and decided to ‘beef up’ the second Spiderbeam and leave its erection tunill just before the contest start, hoping the wind would die down by then. Spiderbeam Assembly

The antenna team then moved onto the trailer tower and TH5 plus dipoles for 80 and 40m fortunately without further problems. Late Saturday morning saw us tackle erecting our second Spiderbeam after attempts to strengthen its structure.

We failed! With the Spiderbeam atop our mast and nearly vertical, a strong gust caught the assembly and stressed the fibreglass poles beyond their limits shattering two sections. Yet another planning meeting saw us fabricating dipoles for the HF bands with testing completed just minutes before the contest start at 1200 GMT.

18

After the disappointment of our antennas the station performed remarkably well though conditions on the HF bands could have been better. All too soon the contest was over with 2316 QSOs in the log and 6.3M points claimed compared with 2237 QSOs and 7.7M points scored last year. By the time our taxi arrived all antennas and masts were down and the station stripped down. We treated ourselves to Donegal Haddock, chips and mushy peas before again testing the island’s supply of ‘The Black Stuff’. Thanks to all the IOTA team on Arranmore: (l-r in the picture) Carsten G0SYP, Kieron K5KJM, Evan M0TJU, Bernard G3SHF, Sarah 2E0KUHm om M0DCG, and Peter M1PTR. A particularly thank you to Sarah 2E0KUH who did a sterling job organising the food and meals that set us up each day….and not forgetting Dave G0LZL who provided invaluable support getting the required equipment together before our departure. IOTA Team

Also I would like to thank all the guys back at Stockport Radio Society who helped and supported us with our preparations, in particular Tony M0SAV for his work preparing the trailer mast for the road.

We will be back! – After a planning meeting of course. 19

100th Year Anniversary - 2020 I know it sounds a long way off, but I have been tasked with creating the next brochure to compliment the 75 year anniversary brochure. The original was compiled by Laurie Newman G4ZDO in 1995. Firstly if you have never seen the 75 year brochure, send me an email, and I can send you a link to the ‘old dog earer ‘ version. My request to all members from 1995 onwards, is the following:

 Do you have any stories from

  

1995 onwards that maybe of interest for the centenary brochure? Are there any special events that you think we need to cover? Are there any competitions that we have won that are not being done any more? Would you like to write something on the latest aspects of Amateur Radio that is coming into use?

These are just a few points, but I am sure that you get the idea. This brochure is bring produced to commemorate your club, and your help would be greatly appreciated. If you need to contact me, please email me on hethstanley@gmail.com or via the bat phone on 07506 904422 21

HF Ladder 2017 With summer in the UK now in full swing we are seeing some outdoor events involving radio and opportunities for inter G contacts. You may think this wouldn’t yield many HF Ladder slots but don’t forget that we have seven DXCC prefixes within the UK. These being G, GD, GI, GJ, GM, GU & GW. With eleven bands to play with, if you worked each prefix on all bands, that’s a potential 77 slots! Now I know that’s most unlikely, but even if you managed to bag a few prefixes on the most popular bands of 40 & 80m it would give you a good start on the leaderboard. At the time of writing the International lighthouse weekend has just finished and was an ideal time to for inter-G contacts. Further a field across Europe, there’s always stations on the band participating in the World Wide Flora & Fauna (WWFF) programme (established to recognise the importance of protecting nature, flora and fauna). The contacts are generally quite short with the remote station providing the WWFF location reference, which can be a national park or preservation site. The web site http://wwff.co/ agenda/ gives details of planned operations and maps of all WWFF locations. Keep looking at the Propagation Wizard in Club Log to find the best time and band for your setup. Also, there is SM3CER, http:// www.sk3bg.se/contest/ for contest operations and NG3K, http:// www.ng3k.com/Misc/adxo.html for announced DX operations.
