Letter from our President This is the start of my third year as President, and I would to thank last year’s Committee for all the hard work they have put into making SRS the best club in the North West and winning Club of the Year 2016. A special thank you must go out to Bernard G3SHF for his excellent work as Treasurer, this has now been passed to Evan M0TJU who am sure will do a fine job, l would also like to thank two other Committee members who have done an excellent job for many years and have now retired from the committee Steve G8YTP and Tom M0DCG. We have had a good year moving the club forward. We now have our Society evenings, Radio nights and with two stations, a new mast and antenna’s this can only get better, and also the Skills nights which will continue into 2017. This year we are running three nets per month - 2m, 6m and thanks to Don G8WPL a HF Net on 10m. We have had excellent pass rate in the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced License Training Courses, so a big thank you to all the tutors for all the time and effort they put into the courses. Without them we would have very few radio hams coming into the hobby. Rallies - We had a good turn out from the membership to the NARSA rally at Blackpool and our own SRS rally at Walthew House everybody did a first class job to make it a great success. JOTA with Heald Green,Cheadle and Gatley Scouts using the GB2CGS went very well with many of the young scouts taking part. I am sure we will see more of the younger generation coming into the hobby if not now, later in life. This was a good team effort by our members. Contesting - A good year for the SRS contest team who put a lot time, planning and work to get SRS known on the air. I enjoyed working the guys from Walthew House in the IOTA contest with call EJ0SR before the main contest started. Tony M0SAV Chairman and Heather M6HNS Secretary/Media Manager a big thank you for all the work that you do at home that we don’t see to make SRS as good as it is Kind regards Al G0ROW

Letter from the SRS Auditor David Hirst 19 November 2016 Hi Bernard and Nigel Well it’s the end of an era! Stirling work with the accounts this year as always. Its so gratifying to see that there is still a healthy interest in the world of Amateur Radio and especially in the SRS/PCG in this digital age. Its comforting to think that Bernard is passing the accounts “baton” on to new blood with the society in a good position and growing, which I believe is in part, down to the fantastic enthusiasm and commitment of the members of the society. I send good wishes and continuing success in future endeavours and projects, and I hope that I will be able attend a few meetings in the coming year.

Bernard G3SHF said “Eric was a regular meeting attendee when I first joined. While he was a paid up member until 2014 he hadn't attended meetings for quite some time as he and his XYL had been unwell in recent years. He was a keen CW operator and enjoyed numerous annual construction awards from SRS with all sorts of electrical and mechanical devices designed to amuse adults and children alike” Our condolensences were passed onto the family.

G-QRP club mini convention 2016 by Ray M1REK At least four members of SRS attended the G-QRP club mini convention on Saturday 22 October 2016. John M0PEK, Mike M6MPC, Andy M1LOL and myself. This was the last convention to be held at Rishworth School and the last to be organised by the present organisers. Mainly George Dobbs G3RJV who as organised this event for many years and formed the G-QRP club back in 1974. The future of this event remains unsure. As well as the normal rally stalls and features there were three talks in the lecture theatre. Roy Lewallen W7EL being introduced by George Dobbs G3RJV

The first was an Antenna question and answer session given by Roy Lewallen W7EL. Roy is the designer of the EZNEC antenna modelling software. Roy started off his talk by saying he was not an antenna expert. He said there are experts, if you ask them how long your feeder needs to be to stop RF entering the shack. They will tell you immediately 37 feet and when you use 37 feet of feeder you do not have any rf in the shack. Someone else asks him the same question and is told 37 feet, when he uses the required length he gets RF in the shack. So he starts to 16

look for what he has done wrong. It cannot be the wrong length because that guy is an expert. Roy said when he is asked the same question he always answers “well that depends” So then the questioner says “well the expert knew the answer straight away” From then on Roy started all his answers with well that depends …….. Roy answered questions about multi band antennas, comparisons between verticals and inverted Vs earthing, baluns and many other things I cannot remember. A very informative and interesting talk. The next lecture was given by Rex Harper W1REX Rex is owner of QRPme and Tuna tin kits. Rex was very entertaining he gave a short talk on alternative ways to build your radio projects. This Rex Harper W1REX consisted mainly of different places to build them. Rex builds in the park, in the library, in the town centre anywhere in fact. He also showed us alternative tools to use. He then went on to organise Britain’s biggest buildathon 110 of us built a RF probe in the lecture theatre! The last talk was given by George Dobbs about his 40 years of life in the G-QRP club. Lunch was the usual pie and peas followed by apple pie and cream. I will really miss attended this rally. Web links http://www.gqrp.com/ https:// www.eznec.com/ http://www.qrpme.com/ Ray M1REK 17

HF Ladder 2016 – Final Summary With 2016 over and the New Year having come and gone, it’s time to take a look back over last year’s Ladder. From right out of the starting gate till the very end, Barry Simpson VK2BJ had been way in front of the pack. His mammoth slot tally – 859 – was one third of the overall total. Barring six and 60 metres, he dominated every band across the MF and HF spectra. With a modest station in suburban Sydney, he reached every corner, nook and cranny in the world from his adopted home in the Antipodes. Perhaps radio waves travel better ‘upside down’. Second place belonged to Bernard G3SHF, with 265 slots, who narrowly beat Evan M0TJU (261). Bernard owes his runner-up position to his solid performance on all of the WARC bands, including the notoriously quiet and temperamental 12-metre band. Other standouts include Eric G3GMM’s and Tom M0DCG’s very respectable slot totals on 160 metres: 15 and 10, respectively. Top Band rarely lends itself to great distances – especially with typical back-garden antennas – and just getting beyond the British Isles is an achievement. Looking at the other end of the spectrum, Graham G3ZOD led the way on six metres, with a tally of 21 slots. For yet another year, 60 metres was monopolised by Alan G0ROW, with 10 slots. Once requiring a notice of variation (NoV) to operate on, 5MHz is now open to all (full) licence holders. As the solar cycle wains and with more band-capable transceivers coming onto the market, expect the popularity of 60 metres to grow in the coming years. But don’t dwell on last year’s results; 2017’s Ladder has already started. Get those slots chalked up! 73 Evan Duffield M0TJU 22
