Members Profile John Rolls Out His Kit For Rallies John Kay – M0PEK - is becoming more of a familiar sight at rallies and radio events these days and, with his array of military vehicles and vintage radio equipment, he’s a hard man to miss.

Stockport-based John’s interest in amateur radio started at the age of 12, when he built his first crystal set, providing him with the basics he needed to ensure his love for ‘the hobby’ would endure. At 15, he acquired a military radio – an R209 receiver - and it was this, allied to an avid fascination for military vehicles, which was to see him spend close to 40 years of his leisure time chasing facets of both hobbies.
John, said: “It seemed like a natural progression going from acquiring military communications’ equipment to buying vehicles to transport the radio gear. “In 1969 I bought an Austin Champ, and this led to my continued interest in militaria – it can be really addictive,” he joked. John currently owns a WS19 set complete, and several other military radio sets, including some from Larkspur range, and virtually all of the Clansman range. He also boasts a variety of Bundeswehr SEM range handheld and vehicle receivers and, unsurprisingly, is a member of the Vintage and Military Amateur Radio Society (VMARS).

1952 Humber and Radio Equipment John’s most recent outing was at the Stockport Radio Society (SRS) Rally 2015, where he displayed a 1952 Humber, built by the Rootes Company and which has a 4.25 Rolls Royce B60 Engine. His other vehicles include another Austin Champ, with a C13 installation – although this is currently undergoing some restoration work - and a Pinzgauer Radio Vehicle. “My Most unusual vehicle was a Volvo Sugga TP21 (Swedish word for sow). Its official title was Radio Command All Terrain Vehicle, said John. ”This was fitted out with Swedish radio equipment, but it has now been sold and lives in Holland.” Apprenticed at Ferranti in 1969 as an Electronic Engineer, he was soon travelling all over the world installing Ferranti computer systems. Nowadays, John is primarily involved in fixing computer systems on oil and gas Industry installations, particularly in the North Sea off Aberdeen, Morecambe Bay and occasionally in Saudi Arabia. John has been a member of SRS for approximately three and half years, and currently uses a Clansman VRC321 from home and a PRC320 when mobile.

HF Ladder Report by Evan M0TJU Frequencies Since the last snapshot of the leader board was taken, in late May, nearly a third more slots have been earned, despite much of this period being characterised by mediocre band conditions. The Ladder has also gained an extra participant, Ray M1REK, who has been delayed in getting info onto Club Log due to technical issues. His 63 slots put him right in the middle of the table. There has been a some shuffling of the positions on the leader board, but nothing terribly radical. Little movement, either, occurred in the shares for the various bands of the slot total, even with the last couple of months straddling the summer solstice and constituting ‘peak summer’. Carsten G0SYP continues to be way out in front in terms of slot totals; in fact, his tally of 636 represents a full third of all slots earned so far this year. His nearest rival, Evan M0TJU, has 394. Carsten and Evan are placed first and second, respectively, for both CW and Digimodes. However, the two are well down the list in terms of Phone (i.e. voice) points. The battle for the Phone crown is taking place between Alan G0ROW and Kieron M5KJM, with respective totals on the mode of 141 and 147. With Phone being his only mode, Alan has only half of the slot total of Kieron, the latter’s high activity on CW taking his overall score to a healthy 268. Third place for CW goes to Bernard G3SHF, who has gained all 160 of his slots using that mode. Meanwhile, Phone ‘bronze’ goes to Nigel G0RXA, with 59. Looking at the share of slots across the bands, little has changed in the preceding couple of months. The proportion of slots earned on the higher HF bands (15, 12, 10 and 6 metres) was only 1 percent higher than at last count. With the period from late May to late July covering what is (usually) peak sporadic E (Es) season, one may expect the high-band slot totals to increase sharply. However, the relative absence of spectacular sporadic E outbreaks this summer, in combination with poor solar conditions in recent weeks, has put a dampener on activity. Don’t let that put you off; there is plenty of Es season left, and – with some luck – the low sunspot counts and high-speed particle streams from our nearest star will not persist.
