Review of Events Message from the President - Alan G0ROW

SRS Links:

My first year as your President I feel has gone really well. The Constitution has now been amended for 2015 and the HA account has now been opened and Trustees have been appointed.

Stockport Radio Society www.g8srs.co.uk

Early in the year we approached Walthew House with a view to acquiring the store room for our exclusive use. In October we were given the go ahead. This will become a real asset to us as we can move forward to establish more permanent radio stations within the JB room. The storeroom has now been cleared and the storage shelves have been refitted with brackets. This was achieved with the help of Nigel 2E0CKA, Heather M6HNS, Tony M0SAV and myself.

RSGB Region 3 www.rsgb-region-3.org.uk

We are now getting more of our own club members taking courses and moving up the licence tree. l am keen to promote this so that the future of SRS is guaranteed. I would like to thank all Committee members for their hard work in the past 12 months. If you hear me on the Bands give me a call as I am always happy to hear from a club member. The joy of Amateur Radio is speaking to people.

Message from the Chairman - Tony M0SAV This year seems to have flown by, possibly because of all the continued activity within the club. It certainly does not feel like twelve months since I was appointed as your Chairman. Along with the assistance of the Committee and members, the club continues to grow, both in membership and knowledge. Since the updating of the course syllabuses the training group have had a hectic time re-vamping the slides we use. This in itself, has been a mammoth task, so a big thank you to all, especially Heather M6HNS for compiling the courses slides. Our courses see candidates from not only within the Greater Manchester area but further afield. This can only be a good omen for the club and our trainers. Looking forward, we are in the process of having two possibly three mobile stations for use in the club. This will cut down on the assembly and strip down time so giving more time on air. It is intended that the stations will be used for all aspects of our great hobby. The Committee is focused on taking the club forward and hoping to attract younger members to carry our hobby onwards into the next century and beyond. So for next year, more outings, special event stations, try your hand at small contests from Walthew plus more. If you have an idea for a project then lets hear about it. If you are prepared to front it then we, the Committee, will support you all we can. Our annual rally always proves successful, plus we are looking at resurrecting the odd member’s surplus equipment sale. As you all know we won two awards at this years NARSA rally at Blackpool - Best Stand and Best Website, thank you to all concerned, a remarkable achievement. Winning these awards puts Stockport Radio Society at the forefront of RSGB region 3. Peak Contest Group (SRS contesting arm) continues their winning streak in 2015. Again putting SRS on the map worldwide. Congratulations to all operators and helpers who brave the weather to put the stations together, and then take it all apart after the contest. So here’s to looking forward to another productive year in 2016. On behalf of myself and Alan G0ROW, May I take this opportunity to wish all members a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. 2

Morse Code

The Peak Contest Group (SRS Contest Group) entered this years CQWW SSB contest. The 48 hour event saw 4522 QSOs with 666 Multipliers, scoring just 6M points by the G5O station. This compared well with last years figures:- 3625 QSOs, 647 Multipliers giving 4.8M points.

The contest group operators were Dave G0LZL, Tom M0DCG, Evan M0TJU, Kieron M5KJM and myself. We were pleased to be joined by visits from SRS by Nigel G0RXA and Tony M0SAV who were quickly pointed towards the operating ‘hot seats’ on both Saturday and Sunday, plus on Sunday Heather M6HNS and Nigel 2E0CKA who, after a brief introduction to the station and the contest rules, also found themselves in the ‘hot seats’ making QSOs with a little supervision and support.

My thanks to all involved with the event and particularly to our visitors who were game to join in with the operating and will hopefully be “visiting” us again in future events. PS While Nigel G0RXA and Tony M0SAV have been contesting for some time now and were able to join in very quickly, for Heather M6HNS and Nigel 2E0CKA this was their first experience of contesting and with a little help they were soon contributing to our score. So if anyone is interested in giving contesting a try please do not be put off because you lack experience. We can help with this. Our next SSB contest is the WPX contest another 48 hour event over the last weekend of March

In 1965 I married and continued with SWL. Two children came along so expansion was limited as family life took over.

Subs Reminder

In1987 I did my RAE for my VHF licence and received the call sign G1ROW. I later took the morse test in 1992 and then received my HF licence G0ROW.

Just a quick note to remind you that your subs for 2016 will be due for renewal on 1 December, 2015

I joined SRS which then met at Dialstone Centre. I retired at 63 from my position of Purchasing Manager and found myself with more time to enjoy the hobby. I met the late Jim Barlow G3VOU at SRS and he gave me a lot of encouragement to get more involved.

Can you please let Nigel 2E0CKA know when you will be paying your subs, so that Nigel can inform our Treasurer – Bernard G3SHF.

I was invited to join the committee in 2010 and one of the first things I did was reinstate the clubs nets on VHF and HF on Tuesday evenings from my home QTH using the call sign G8SRS and this ran for a number of years.

If you would like to pay directly through the bank, please let me know and I will send you the Bank information.

The opportunity came along to plan and site aerials at Walthew House and I formed a sub committee of 4 to achieve this. The club nets now run from different members home QTH. We offer all members the chance to chair a net. I have become a mentor for the On Air Team to help members operate.

Many thanks for your continued support of Stockport Radio Society, and we look forward to seeing you at one of the next meetings.

One of my other committee duties is to invigilate over most of the exams for the various licences. I am also the Course Secretary. My main interests are SSB HF and collecting paper QSL cards. On December 16th 2014, I was elected President of Stockport Radio Society.

HF Ladder Report by Evan M0TJU We're now in the final stretch of the HF Ladder for 2015. Only a handful of days remain before the conclusion: 2359UT on 30 November. Despite the late hour, the Ladder continues to gain entrants: Heather M6HNS, Nigel 2E0CKA and Tony M0SAV, with respective (all-phone) slot totals of seven, nine and 32 as at 4 November. Added to this, Pete M1PTR managed to 'find' a whole stack of QSOs, which have propelled him from the bottom part of the leader board to the middle. Carsten continues to lead overall and in the CW and digimode sections; his massive total of 749 is mostly made up of Morse (439) and digital (295) slots. He used late September's CQ WW DX RTTY contest to great effect, and has added 92 digi slots since the last Ladder snapshot. Second place presently belongs to Evan M0TJU, who has only two thirds of Carsten's total tally, with 487. Alan G0ROW has overtaken his traditional rival, Kieron M5KJM, in the race for the phone crown, with 164 to Kieron's 156. Kieron remains in third place, overall, with 282 - his slots shared fairly evenly between phone and CW. Logging problems continue to beset Mike M6MPC and Ray M1REK. The former has had trouble uploading his October QSOs to Club Log, and Ray is still struggling to get his contacts for the past few months onto that website. Band conditions have been marginally better during October, on average, than during the previous month: sunspot numbers have consistently been at highish levels and the effect of high-speed solar streams were not as noticeable as they had been in earlier months. In the final fortnight of the month, the ten-metre band was regularly open on transatlantic and intra-European paths - a fact happily noticed by the Peak Contest Group, who did the CQ WW DX SSB contest on the 24th and 25th of October. For those hoping for a surge in their high-band slot counts as we head into the home straight, sunspot numbers should remain healthy throughout November; just be aware of the continuing presence of high-speed particle streams and the possibility of impacts of material from CMEs - the unfortunate side effects of the near -maximum stage of the solar cycle. P.S. I will be taking the next (and final) snapshot of the HF Ladder sometime on the evening of Tuesday, 1 December, meaning that, by that time, Club Log should contain all QSOs completed during the 2015 calendar year prior to 0000UT on the first of December. Should any of you believe that you will have difficulty with that requirement, please let me know. (I suspect that some of you will be participating in the CQ WW DX CW contest, held on the couple of days before the Ladder's end. Therefore, uploading contest QSOs to Club Log by 1 December may be difficult.) I'll send an email reminder about the submission deadline to the Friends of SRS group towards the end of November.
