Chairman’s Corner Hello to all Members I hope that you all enjoyed the festive season and received all the presents that you wished for. Well here we are at the start of a new year 2018, which I hope is going to be as successful as 2017 was, and better, with more activities in the pipeline. Thank you to all who attended the AGM and Social Evening. As you all know 2018 will see the separation of the formal AGM and the in-house awards and Social Evening. We are looking for a licensed venue with wheelchair access within Stockport to hold our presentation and social evening. There are a few venues available which we will be looking at in due course. As I write this, arrangements are taking place with the SRS Contest Group for the 2018 season at Common Barn Farm. A trip to Ireland for IOTA, for this, the SRS Special Events Group will be on air from Walthew House. Check the SRS website for contest dates. The SRS Special Events group will be at Manchester Airport Visitor Park for the two day TAS event, and also at Woodford Museum on the Sunday following the SRS Rally. Further events are in the planning stage. So keep watching the SRS web page and social media for updates. We are still looking for members to chair the evening nets. If you have the coverage with your setup please come forward. We are also looking for members to assist the Contest Group and also the Special Events Group. This would be in setting up and taking down the stations, with some operating as well (operating not compulsory). So if you have time available please get in contact with myself or Bernard G3SHF. I have received an apology from the management at Walthew House regarding the heating, or lack of it. The boiler is broken and requires replacement; they are in the process of raising funds to pay for new one. Don’t forget to register if you wish to take part in the Centenary Award, the Blue Sapphire and Diamond Award is also now active. Please read the rules for all awards regarding points scoring. Vice Chairman - Alan Gurnhill G0ROW - To cover for all aspects of the Chairman’s role in the absence of the Chairman Treasurer (Programme Manager) - Evan Duffield M0TJU - Keeping the accounts in good order, and advising the Committee of any financial matters. Preparing the accounts for audit and presenting at the AGM. Maintaining register of society equipment. Organising club talks and radio nights. Secretary (Media Manager/Rally Asst) - Heather Stanley M6HNS Keeping minutes of all meetings, and ensuring that all correspondence is correctly handled. Keeping the website and the RSGB up to date with all matters of club activities. Compiling the quarterly QUA newsletter, and sending articles into Radcom on club activities. Membership Outings Co-ordinator - Kieron Murphy M5KJM - To organise two membership outings per year (Spring and Autumn). Advertise the Committee of the events proposed and Heather M6HNS for advertising to the membership SRS Station Manager - Phil Hodges M0XYA - To oversee all aspects of the club’s radio stations and antennas. To report any problems regarding misuse, breakages, missing parts or breakdown of equipment to the Chairman in the first instance and the Committee to see what course of action to take.

Bob Glasgow GM4UYZ receiving his BEM which was awarded in the Queens Honours list in June 2017 for services to Amateur Radio. Following on from our last newsletter, we are very proud to show you the presentation of the BEM to Bob Glasgow GM4UYZ Bob was able to invite 12 guests to the event (He said ‘I would have loved to ask for more but I couldn’t). My guests were my wife, my father, two daughters and two grandchildren, my uncle and aunt and four members of the Cockenzie and Port Seton Amateur Radio Club.’ The Provost of East Lothian opened the preceding of the order of events that would be taken place during the Investiture. He then passed over the service to Angela Leitch, Chief Executive of East Lothian who read out the “citation” that had been submitted for me obtaining the BEM. Once that was finished the BEM was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian, Michael Williams MBE. After the ceremony we were invited to afternoon tea. The awards ceremony took place in the Town Hall, Haddington, East Lothian on Monday 23 October 2017 at 14:30

Bob Glasgow GM4YZ Honorary Member of Stockport Radio Society At the final Committee meeting of 2017, the Committee discussed the achievement that Bob had received, and it was agreed unanimously to make Bob Glasgow an honorary member of SRS after receiving his BEM for services to Amateur Radio. Tony M0SAV said ‘It is a great achievement for Bob to receive this award and a massive compliment to amateur radio. We are very pleased to bestow this Club honour to Bob’. Heather M6HNS sent Bob a letter confirmimg this, and his reply is below. “Thanks for the email and my, this is a year of surprises…..once again speechless and very thankful for the new honour…really stumped for words. Many thanks to all concerned for making me an Honorary Member of the Stockport Radio Society which I will accept with great pride. Little did I ever think that something like that would ever happen ….. I can still remember my first visit when I came along with John Hrycan M0BEX on one of my works visits to Manchester. Pity John and his son let it all lapse but I know family issues with him at the time forced it upon him. Maybe one day he might return. I must admit I was made so welcome and whenever I could on my visits to Manchester I would come along to the club nights. I have given talks at the club… the one I remember most was the GM2T and the IOTA contest trip to Tiree. See what I did you all…. Contesting is one of my main features within the hobby and I always go out of my way to try and contact you, my way of supporting “my” other club …. Always looking at the results as well to make sure GM2T is above you though…………….!!!!!! I do keep an interest in what is going on with regard the club although many things I can’t take part in due to location. You are a very active club and like here at CPSARC always striving to do more….. RAIBC The Charity Working for Radio Amateurs with Disabilities Stockport Radio Society recently joined the RAIBC. Here is a bit of information about the group from their leaflet.
Background - Established in 1954, RAIBC is a national society and charity, dedicated to supporting Radio Amateurs and short-wave listeners with disabilities. The RAIBC logo is recognised throughout the amateur radio world. The Club is a UK Registered charity, no 802348, and is run and managed by a group of amateurs forming the elected committee. The committee comprises various members of the RAIBC, all representing the wider range of abilities and talents found within its ranks. The Audio Library contains the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced manuals and an 8-disk video of the an intermediate course with audio track. Also available are Instruction manuals for the Kenwood TS590, TS480, TS570, TMV71e, TMG707 and the Icom 703. Morse practice discs are also available. RAIBC is able to loan amateur radio equipment to members with disabilities. The equipment may have a voice synthesizer chip fitted for blind or partially sighted members, or may have have other modifications to facilitate use. We have a stock of Morse tutors for loan to members who wish to learn or improve their CW. Radial - is the bi-annual newsletter distributed to all members and supporters. These recordings can be downloaded from the members only area or are available each month by post on mp3 CD. If you have difficulty reading printed material and wish to receive the monthly Reading Rattle CD, please contact the Secretary. Practical Assistance - We have a wide network of members with disabilities and a small pool of able bodies supporters across the country. Where possible they will provide practical advice and assistance, but we cannot erect aerials or provide an installation service. Our remit is to help with the often prohibitively expensive modern accessible equipment and the granting of basic antennas. It is very much up to the individual to make friendships or endeavour to find support through amateurs in local clubs. We also try to assist amateurs who find themselves in residential care and have difficulty continuing in heir hobby. Advice - Becoming disabled or visually impaired can leave some amateurs wondering if they can continue in their hobby. We can give advice on many aspects of amateur radio, from getting started through to tacking the most technical challenge. SRS Contest Group - Where they operate / Contest dates A bit of information about the Group For all four of the CQ Worldwide CW and SSB contests, we operate from a caravan near the B&B at Common Barn Farm, about 3 miles northeast of Macclesfield. The entrance to Common Barn Farm is along Smith Lane, Rainow, a little over half a mile from the road’s intersection with the B5470 (the Whaley Bridge-Macclesfield Road) which, in turn, is about 200 metres north of the village of Ginclough. Although the postcode for the farm is given as SK10 5XJ, you may want to set your satnav destination to either SK10 5XQ (if you approaching Smith Lane along the B5470 from the Macclesfield end) or SK10 5UX (if you are travelling on the B5470 from Whaley). These postcodes are respective points about 100 metres south and north of the Smith Lane/B5470 intersection. When approaching the farm from the Smith Lane/B5470 intersection, the farm will appear on your right. You’ll see the antennas! Below are the dates of the contests that we will be taking part in. Trip to Bletchley Park At a recent Committee meeting, the discussion of trips for 2018 was brought up. Bletchley Park was suggested. After sending out a brief email, we currently have 21 members booked on the trip. If you are interested in joining the trip, please email Heather on info@g8srs.co.uk who will add you to the list. CQWW CW Contest October 25/26 2017 The SRS Contest Group entered the 48 hour CW contest on the above date. While HF conditions were not at their best, we felt we had an enjoyable and successful contest in weather conditions that were at best challenging. High winds, heavy rain, snow and sleet. Yes typical contest weather! Tom's photo of our aerials gives some indication of Saturday mornings greetings! We made 5021 QSOs and scoring 5.5M points compared with 3646 QSOs and 3.5M points last year. 10m activity was small with 11 QSOs while 80m generated 1025 QSOs, more than we have made on this band in the last 10 years. The major bands of course were 20 and 40m, with 40 generating 200 more QSOs than 20m. Plenty of DX about and it's always a thrill to BE CALLED by VK, ZL, China or Japan. Today we started the 'Tear Down' that will take a couple of days. My thanks to the operators Kieron M5KJM, Evan M0TJU, Carsten G0SYP, Dave G0LZL, Tom M0DCG and returning group member Pawel M0DSL. Our thanks also go to Pete M1PTR who not only set up our computers and network but also spent considerable time assisting with the station build/tear down without the pleasure of some operation. SRS DXCC Ladders 2018 Welcome to a brand new year of DX’ing and a clean sheet start for all. Congratulations to last year’s winners Barry VK2BJ, winner of the Jim Barlow trophy, and to Neil M6NAE, winner of the Foundation certificate. To start the New Year we’ve added a VHF/UHF DXCC section known as the ‘2 & 70 DXCC Ladder’. This ladder is primarily for digital voice Internet based users (e.g. DSTAR, Fusion etc) all modes are welcome but please note with RF modes DXCCs are limited on these bands. We’ve also renamed the HF ladder to ‘HF & 6 DXCC Ladder’ to clarify which bands are included. This is the first time we are running the ‘2 & 70 DXCC ladder’ so expect some teething troubles and bear with us as it settles in. Firstly, while setting up this ladder I’ve temporarily had to bend some rules to enable Clublog to record the DXCCs. This is because ARRL DXCC awards (on which our ladder is based) allows DSTAR as a mode but does not count Internet based QSOs as DXCC 4 credits. To get around this for now the QSO mode has to be set to an accepted mode such as FM. To avoid uploading incorrect data into Clublog I am looking for alternative solutions.

HF & 6 DXCC Ladder January got off to a good start with the RSGB AFS CW & SSB contests, which may explain the 40 and 80 scores for some of us. These two contests run 1400-1800hrs a week apart with mostly inter G contacts and European opening towards the close. Looking at the scores there were some openings on the upper HF bands though as last year the lower bands remain the most active at this time of year. You will note the absence of Barry VK2BJ who has kindly stepped aside this year to allow others to compete for the trophy. Evan M0TJU is currently leading the pack so it’s game on for the rest of us!
2 & 70 DXCC Ladder Welcome to those who have joined, I hope others will join as the rules and submission process mature. I know Neil M6NAE is keen to get some competition! Note that anyone who joins the regular SRS VHF/UHF net will be able to claim at least one DXCC – ENGLAND. Neil M6NAE leads the field with 25 DXCCs to date using C4FM mode on 70cm.
