Dear participants, On behalf of the whole SRT-OC, we are happy to welcome you as participant of the Sub-Regional Training of IFMSA-NL. In the summer of 2015 a group of enthusiasts came together with the idea that they all would like to plan a SRT in the Netherlands. Now, in the fall of 2016, 11 dedicated OC members are making daily progress in the organization of thĂŠ SRT of IFMSA-NL, where participants and trainers from around countries will meet in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. The Cornerstones on which we have been building this event from the beginning are progressively being incorporated, and we would like to take you through them! The trainers and our OC member on workshops are working hard to ensure the high quality of your workshops. Our whole team is working together, joined by the Assisting Committee, on creating all that is needed for the promised stimulating athmosphere for this big diverse

group, with special attention to well-being and the social program. Your adventure called ‘getting to know Holland’, will kick-off the moment you arrive at the airport and will continue through the whole week. Last but not least, we are still practicing what we preach, making our event as sustainable as possible and adding other ideals we stand for to this SRT. In this booklet you can find all you need on different aspects of this SRT. Read it carefully, for it will both make you even more excited as well as give important information for every participant. Dive in & see you in Scheveningen! on behalf of the whole SRT-OC, Nina Gelineau and Anne de Boer

The conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life, all contribute to a person’s state of health. These factors are called the determinants of health. Most of the activities of IFMSA are related to social determinants of health and the strive for health equity. Health is shaped by a lot of different processes looking to the different social determinants of health, such as education, social support, socioeconomic status, employment and ethnic background. Another factor associated with many health challenges is urbanization, which is related to water, environment, violence and injury, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol as well as the risks associated with disease outbreaks. Thus there is a strong link between urbanization and the social determinants of health. More than 54,5% of the world population lives in urban areas in 2016 and it is likely that these numbers will continue rising. It is projected in 2050
16
two out of three people will live in cities. The way cities are governed have a large impact on the world population and their health status, because it connects to an impressive number of (social) health determinants. Besides that, cities are increasingly providing leadership in resolving global development issues having an effect on health, such as health equity, climate change and food security. Therefore cities have a large impact on global processes. From the 17th to the 20th of October the United National Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development will take place in Quito in Ecuador. This conference takes place once every 20 years within the UN framework. During this conference governments of the 193 Members States will make political commitments for sustainable urban development. The name of the conference is in short: habitat III. The habitat III process and all the preparation and consultations leading towards this meeting is an interesting process for you to get to know of. It shows you that the health status of a population is determined by all kinds of different determinants, reflecting health is interwoven in our entire society and the way it is governed. It is also a good example how people and parties of all different kinds of field collaborate
17
interdisciplinary to aim for a healthy city. Last but not least it shows you the way how city governments deal with global processes really has an impact on a global scale. Just as the slogan of IFMSA: Think globally, act locally. We hope your will gain loads of new insights from this theme event and it will inspire you to be involved in local processes having an impact on a global scale and not to be afraid to fight for a spot at the decision making table as health and youth should be represented. There will be one session with external speakers on the 3rd of November with all participants together and on the 4th of November we will divide you into smaller groups for an interactive part of the program around the theme-event.

Social program During the SRT we would like to offer a social program that is accessible for every participant, thus catering to both the party animals and to the culture and history lovers. We’ll give you a taste of the many cultural aspects of the Netherlands and the people that live here. You can play some old fashioned Dutch games and experience a good night clubbing in a bar dedicated to a Dutch celebrity. Furthermore, the traditional National Food and Drinks Party (NFDP) will also be a part of the social program, so don’t forget to bring traditional drinks, snacks and if you have any traditional games bring them too! Quite often people bring alcoholic drinks as well to the NFDP. We have a policy to limit (binge)drinking, but would still like you to have a nice party where you can taste traditional spirits. That’s why there’s an explicit limit of 15 bottles of alcoholic drinks for the whole event. We therefore ask you to also bring non-alcoholic national drinks.

On arrival day there will be two AC-members to help you with finding the way. Nevertheless, it’s good to know the route before you arrive. We recommend you to go to the accommodation via train station ‘the Hague Holland Spoor’ (Den Haag HS), since this is the easiest way. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the Hague HS (Holland Spoor) Every 30 minutes a train to the Hague will depart from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, from platform 5-6. Walk to the train station, platform 5-6. Take the train with direction ‘Vlissingen’ and get off at the Hague Holland Spoor station (Den Haag HS station). This is the third stop o The Hague HS (Holland Spoor) to Jorplace Step into tram 1 with direction ‘Noorderstrand Scheveningen’ (tram is across the street from the main entrance of station HS) and get off at the stop ‘Keizerstraat’. behind the Albert Heijn supermarket. This tram ride will take around 15 minutes.
27
The train from Schiphol to the Hague costs €8,30. The tram costs around €3. You have to buy a ticket for every time you’ll take public transport. In the tram and bus, only cash is allowed (all coins and notes up to €20). If you’re planning on travelling through the Netherlands after the event it is advisable to buy a "public transport chip card" (in Dutch: OVchipkaart) for €7.50 (non-refundable). Before you travel you need to put money on the card, the fare will be deducted. This way you will travel on a reduced price in the bus, tram, train and subway as compared to single fare tickets and save a €1 fee per train ticket. The card can be used in all forms of public transport throughout the country. If you will stay in Amsterdam a few days, you can instead opt for a "Amsterdam Travel Ticket" for 1, 3 or 5 days (see: https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/overige-kaartjes/p/amsterdamtravel-ticket)

Sponsorships & Fundraising Your OC has been working hard to arrange sufficient funds for our SRT. After writing numerous fund- and sponsorship applications, we have managed to receive funds through the foundation Van der Santheuvel, Sobbe, from the Wiggers van Kerchem foundation. This foundation supports projects in the healthcare area, as well as social projects that impact positively upon our society. The ‘Wiggers van Kerchem’ foundations has come to exist through a legacy of miss Johanna Catharina Isabella Wiggers van Kerchem, who lived from 1884 until 1973. It is quite extraordinary to realize that without her efforts and decisions, our meeting would not have been realized. We would like to thank foundation Van der Santheuve, Sobbe and fund Wiggers van Kerchem for their generosity. Currently, we are still in consultation several companies that offer sustainable food, gifts and conference material. Hopefully we will be able to announce other collaborations during our SRT!
