IFMSA-NL invites you to Scheveningen from 2-6 november 2016!

2

Dear all, In the summer of 2015 a group of enthusiasts came together through Skype with the idea that they all would like to plan a SRT in the Netherlands. This plan grew within IFMSA – the Netherlands and now it’s time to welcome you to our country, from the 2nd untill the 6th of November 2016! The IFMSA Sub-Regional Trainings are amongst the most important international capacity building events within IFMSA. During these meetings, motivated (medical) students from a (sub)region can meet and participate in trainings, workshops and small working groups. By organizing this event, we hope to give (medical) students the opportunity to develop their own opinion and find their own voice on what global health entails, and make them aware of what their contribution to improving global health can be.

3

In order to ensure quality of the workshops, we are planning to choose health topics that members of IFMSA-NL or Dutch government or industry substantively have expertise on. This way, we hope to show you how certain health topics are organized in the Netherlands, and we would like you to to share with us how these are organized in your own countries. Our event will take place in the beach town of Scheveningen, near the Dutch political capital The Hague and not to far from the country’s capital Amsterdam. This means that there will be enough to do and see beside the workshops!. What rests to say is that we are very excited to host this event and welcome you to the Netherlands! on behalf of the whole SRT-OC, Nina Gelineau and Anne de Boer

Illustrated by parts of our SRTs logo, we introduce the ‘cornerstones’ of this SRT, on which the event is constructed. High quality workshops At this SRT, you will spend a lot of time in your workshop room and we will make sure that this is a pleasurable environment so that you do not want to leave this room at the end of the day. We will be working towards clear goals, and build bridges between what you learn during the event and how you would want to use this afterwards. Stimulating atmosphere Are you ready to flourish?! People from different backgrounds and with different needs come together in the same place and will be able to learn and enjoy endlessly!

7

What do you really know about this tiny country, called ‘Holland’?! Through additions in the content the workshops and by inviting Dutch experts, we offer insights in Dutch expertise as well as showcasing the topics on which improvement is needed in the Netherlands. Furthermore, imagine what the location and the social program has to offer to get to know ‘Holland’, behind the stereotypes. “Let him who would move the world first move himself” – Socrates For this event we decided to challenge ourselves as OC and practice what we preach. For example, we are investing in an event with attention for sustainability, using the opportunies of modern health care multidisciplinarity. Furthermore we contstantly measure the impact of what we do!

8

This colourful backpackers hostel creates the perfect atmosphere to feel home and unleash all your creativity, which will be great during the workshops. The hostel mostly offers 6 to 7 person dorms and double rooms. The rooms are spread throughout 3 floors and have shared bathrooms and toilets.

The bar, terrace and garden including fireplace are indispensable parts of Beach Hostel Jorplace. All 3 ‘spaces’ provide extra cosiness during your stay. The bar is open as long as there is laughter.

The location of Jorplace is favorable. Around the corner you will find public transport, supermarkets and restaurants and bakeries that offer a large variety of typically Dutch food. The hostel is in walking distance from the popular beach of Scheveningen and within cycling distance from the sanddunes.

This ancient ´city behind the dunes´ offers enormous potential. Scheveningen offers great things for your spare time, you could get a tasty herring in the harbor or a cocktail in one of the many beach bars. Scheveningen is a district of The Hague, which is the centre of Dutch politics. The parliament buildings, Hofvijver(photo) and the Palace Garden of the Royal Family are a must-see for everyone. Moreover you will find in The Hague:  Madurodam (Miniature Dutch city)  the Mauritshuis  the Peace Palace (photo)  the Escher museum All in all, the Beach Hostel Scheveningen is the ideal base to enjoy the city, the beach, the culture and the nature.

12

Workshops The SRT in the Netherlands has something for all of you! We will offer five different workshops that will focus on capacity building, but will also let you gain in depth knowledge on a specific topic. In our SRT high quality workshops is our main focus and will make this SRT unique for you. In order to reach this we focus on clear aims and goals for the different workshops, the workshops will be illustrated with situations/topics on which the Netherlands has a specific experrtise, so thet we can provide you with the most knowledgeble externals, and assure you leave the workshop with clear concrete plans which will have a clear follow up. All this will be possible by IFMSA’s best trainers on these topics!

1. Professional and Research Exchange Training on Social Determinants of Health The IFMSA started with organizing exchanges for medical students. Today, IFMSA has the biggest exchange program for medical students worldwide. The exchanges take a huge part in the work of IFMSA. The PRET aims to learn the exchange officers skills that they can use in organizing the exchanges at their best. This PRET will also focus on the global health topic Social Determinants of Health (the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life) and how to use that in the exchanges. 3.

Public Health Leadership Training The Public Health Leadership Training aims to learn participants the skills to facilitate sessions on and create projects or campaigns on a certain public health topic.

18

In this workshop there will be sessions for the general project management skills and specific sessions on one of the following three public health topics: a. Primary Healthcare Primary healthcare is the care initially given to patients by for instance their general practitioner. Primary healthcare is important to offer healthcare to everyone and to decrease the pressure on specialist care in the hospital. How is primary healthcare structured in your country and how can you improve it? b. Infectious Diseases & Antimicrobial Resistance Antimicrobial resistance is resistance of a microorganism to an antimicrobial drug that was originally effective for treatment of infections caused by it. Infectious diseases are one of the biggest groups of diseases and keep being problematic in big parts of the world. What is the future of these diseases and how does antimicrobial resistance play a role in the treatment of these diseases?

19

4.

Medical Ethics and Human Rights Medical ethics is characterized by an essentially practical orientation: identifying, analyzing, and solving ethical problems that arise in the daily healthcare practice. Human rights are standards of living, that are inalienable and apply to everyone. Increased knowledge among future medical professionals, on medical ethics and human rights, is essential to provide the best possible care for patients. In this workshop there will be a focus on discussing and analyzing ethical problems physicians may face in daily practice.

5.

External Representation IFMSA, as one of the largest students’ networks worldwide, has been well known for its representation at high level meetings and decision-making processes in different areas of the Federation’s priorities. External representation is also of huge importance in the work of the national and local organisations to strive for better healthcare and to raise awareness amongst others. This workshop will focus on learning how to apply external representation in your local, national or international activities.

20

Theme event During the SRT there will be a theme event for all the participants focussing on a general global health topic. Our theme event will excist of two sessions focussing on the topic Habitat III. Habitat III is an initiative from the UN that deals with urban development. Urban development has been a priority of the UN since 1976, when their Habitat I project started. In 1976 37.9% of the world population lived in cities, in 1996, when the Habitat II project started, this number raised to 45.1%. In 2016 the Habitat III project will launch, and the importance of urban development gets more clear each year: in 2016 54.4% of the world population lives in a city. What is the impact that urban development has on health? The Netherlands is a very small country, but is the 27th most dense country in terms of population. How do we in this crowded country deal with healthcare? Participants The workshops will be the perfect start up for new local officers, who want to get to know the international side of IFMSA, gain new knowledge and who want to get some soft skills in order to implement this knowledge for their work on the local level.

21

Because of the focus on a specific subject, the workshops are also very interesting for more advanced members who are looking for some more in depth knowledge on a certain topic.

22

Social program During the SRT we want to offer a social program that is accessible for every participant, something for the party animals as well as something for the culture and history lovers. We want to give you a taste of the many cultural aspects of the Netherlands, and the people that live here. So, are you ready to explore The Hague and Scheveningen? The location gives a lot of opportunities for the social program, because Scheveningen boulevard has a lot of clubs, bars, restaurants, and cultural/touristic highlights. Also, the boulevard has a game hall plus possibilities for more physical activities. Besides this, The Hague city centre is only twenty minutes away from Scheveningen.

23

To name a couple things we are planning to do: a city trip through The Hague city centre and a walk through the ‘Binnenhof and Buitenhof,’ the political heart of the Netherlands, and the workplace of the King. Besides this we are also planning to play some old fashioned Dutch games and experience a good night clubbing at the Scheveningen Boulevard. Furthermore, the traditional IFMSA National Food and drinking Party will also be a part of the social program.
