The worlds’ population is growing exponentially. With much of this growth expected to occur in Africa and Asia, architects and urban designers have in the recent past been challenged with the growing complexities of the new urban mega metropolis, its historical past and the new imaginations and spatial structures that its growing population brings to the spaces of the City. In the city of New Delhi for example, according to the 2021 Master Plan the population would increase by 5 million people over next five years.

In other words, from a current population of 18 million there would be 23 million inhabitants of the city.

The Urban Design / Urban Architecture studio this semester examined this relationship through the design of two projects within the city of New Delhi. The project being a green field Transport Oriented Development in Dwarka. The project contribute towards making Delhi a poly-nodal city. A mixed use program that includes commercial, residential, hospitality and recreational facilities would be viewed as a catalyst in the regeneration (and imagination) of parts of the city and would serve to catapult New Delhi into the second half of the century.

The existing street sections were developed such that there was a dedicated pathways for both pedestrians and cycle riders.The idea was to increase road width without compromising with pedestrian routes.Four street sections were changed in the entire site and this one of them.

Housing units

The housing block was resolved with 9 different units within it. A central corridor was running at the center with balconies of the units facing either the central green or the metro and the mall. The orientation is directed 135 degrees north which was the best according to eco-tect studies - one of the main reasons to make so many units. The units are of 60 sq m and 40 sqm respectively.

This project was an outcome of the need required on the site. A detailed study was done at the precinct level on land use, drainage, movement, topography and visual impact that the site had with everyone who walked past by it and the buildings that were present around it. Sarita Vihar is a residential colony, under the housing scheme of Delhi Development Authority (DDA), 1988-89 situated in South Delhi, India.

In recent times, it has acquired the status of being one of the most sought after and posh colonies of Delhi. Sarita Vihar is located close to the confluence of 3 states namely Delhi, Uttar Pradesh & Haryana and hence has arterial roads with massive traffic movement, connecting the capital with the industrial town of Faridabad, Noida & Greater Noida. It is at a 10 minutes’ drive from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, this connectivity advantage means it has become one of the most suitable places to live in South Delhi, giving the residents easy access to various places. The site is in between the housing built by DDA for MIG’s and EWS groups which are present on the southern side of the site. Although there is Indraprastha Appollo Hospital which has become boon to middle income groups and high income groups, people from the urban village cannot afford for it. Project Vigilance is a government hospital project for the development of health conditions for everyone. With this aim as a vision, a well functional and landmark building has been built for this purpose.

Section of the context The idea was to design a hospital that ensured vigilance over their patients even with less staff at all the times. The design also connects the urban village with the Out patient department and the main road with emergency of the hospital. The developed design ensures the comfort levels of micro-climate developed through fenestrations and landscape.

GANGA Riverfront Development Urban design and Landscape project AECOM, Gurugram, India Worked Under: Abhishek Malhotra, Siddharth Soni, Bhaskar Agarwal, Atanu Das AECOM had collaborated with Uttar pradesh governt to revitalize the ganga riverfront in varanasi which was one of the oldest and destination of many tourists around the world. The scope of the study was to To develop a vision and concept master plan for entire Western bank of river Ganga from the New Bridge (under construction) in South of Varanasi to Adi Keshav Temple in North. Also, To restore the image and brand value of Ghats, thus promoting cities efforts in getting listed amongst the world heritage towns. Also the document may be used as a holistic guideline for carrying our restoration works along the river bank.

For this project, I did a site visit along with urban designers at AECOM and also developed the main site plan of the ghats of Ganga that was used in various drawings that were being processed to publish a book ‘ The Ghats of Ganga’ by AECOM. For about eighteen sections, I personally took the site readings and sections on ground and drafted them later for the diagrams needed for the book.

SEABIRD-Indian Naval Base, Karwar Options for facade for housing groups AECOM, Gurugram, India Worked Under: Abhishek Malhotra, Siddharth Soni, Bhaskar Agarwal, Atanu Das The Indian Navy has appointed AECOM as the project management consultant for its prestigious Project Seabird – Phase IIA. The largest naval infrastructure project for India, it involves creation of a naval base at Karwar on the west coast of India. Upon completion, this $3 billion program and effort will provide the Indian Navy with its largest naval base on the west coast and also the largest naval base east of the Suez Canal.

During my stay at the office, I evolved the designs for a community center, police station, primary school and different housing units. Here, I shall only be presenting a few facade options I did for the housing blocks since the project is very confidential. Also, two spreads of BEAP published by AECOM as a reference for architecture and landscape details for the entire design that was proposed

Building without any skin : Developed a sketch up model personally The idea was to make a facade that shall fit in the context of karnatic-goan architecture. The architecture of these regions had very traditional system of using bright colors and sloped roofs due to the heavy rainfall in the region. Using strips for indicating different floors was a typical feature as well. Windows and balconies help in light and ventilation and also add to the facade features. Even the shafts if designed well could be the major outstanding features of a building itself.

Located on a partially hilly terrain along the coast, the project involves several technical and environmental challenges. A significant amount of site work will have to be carried out as portion of the area in the sea will be reclaimed.

Additionally the facilities have to be built on a hilly terrain. AECOM will draw upon its technical expertise to carry out this work while ensuring least disruption to the environment.

‘POINT-BLANK’

Semester 6, 2015 ‘POINT BLANK’: Post Graduate Block Design School of Planning and Architecture,Vasant Kunj Individual Project Critique: Prof. Gauri Gandi, Madhu pandit, Vikram Verma School of Planning and Architecture was built in the year 1941. The number of students were very less compared to what is today. As time is passing, the requirement is increasing, so SPA must do all things necessary to enhance its image as an institution of national importance and a center of higher learning. Among them is the establishment of an ‘Integrated’ and ‘Unified’ Campus was the vision of the project. In the many years of its existence SPA has suffered immensely due to its fragmented physical set up. We have endured several administrative constraints and communication inconveniences within the institution and faced an alienation of departments from one another. The Integrated SPA Campus hence proposes to house all Undergraduate and Postgraduate Departments of Architecture and Planning in a sufficiently large single residential complex for both students and faculty.

DADA architects won the competition that was held in which only the SPA alumni was allowed to participate. With the context provided by them, I designed the post-graduation department of SPA with all 12 major master programs that it has today. Some salient features include its apt design for the current student strength, its easy access from the residential complex, lecture center and student center. A connected green corridor throughout the campus is maintained.

‘COALESCE’: Context and Site Student Community Center Individual Project Critique: Prof. Gauri Gandi, Madhu pandit, Vikram Verma

Stream running in between

The campus layout responds to the micro-climate and topography of the steep site in the part forested hills of Kamand in the western Himalayan region as designed by BDP. Phase I includes shared state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops in learning houses situated on various levels and connected via pedestrian bridges. A market square forms the heart of the campus and creates a place to encourage social interaction and celebration. The faculty staff housing element forms a retreat on the higher levels at the campus ‘peninsula’. It is laid out in a village setting offering fantastic views. Proposed building typologies echo the traditional style of Himalayan a vernacular and strive toward a new architecture for the region.

Within this, a student community center was to be proposed. Three major spots were selected by the faculty and we were to decide where we would build the center after mentioning why we have decided to do on the site we chose.

Semester 8, 2016 Settlement Study: Sarai Amanath Khan Research Study

The Amanat Khan Sarai is located amidst all the architectural grandeur of the Mughal period in Amritsar. Though time has been responsible to ravage most of the beauty of this building, the impressions still last and what is seen will definitely give a thorough idea of what an exquisite arrangement it had been in the past. The hand of Amanat Khan, as already said above was the one behind the splendor of the Taj Mahal, captivating tourist from all across the globe.

Sarai Amanat Khan was also used as a guest house in the past or travelers along the Lahore Agra route where they would rest for a day or night before moving further. There were small rooms made for the travelers and a mosque was built for their regular prayers. After his death, Amanat Khan was buried in the same place and now the Sarai also acts as his mausoleum. So, a group of fourty students had done a site study in groupson various aspects such as physical infrastructure, architectural language, community profile, Social infrastructure and do on. I along with three other members documented the sanitation and connectivity within the entire village.

In that plot, we designed a primary school, aganwaadi, healthcare center and a conventional center.

While metro stations are often designed in idea of believing pressure on the already congested roads, they could also serve a vital role in the wellbeing of its patrons and the city. The aim is to create life around an already busy metro station. How there can be so much more to the station than just the platforms!

We chose our metro station to be Hauz Khas metro station which is in New Delhi, India. Hauz Khas village is a historic habitation around the region of Noida Hauz Khas Complex, dating to much before establishment of South Delhi city. It existed as an urban village at the edge of larger Hauz Khas area, developed by DLF after the 1960s. The village area started getting modernized in mid-1980s when designer boutiques of fashion designer like Bina Ramani, started moving in. Then, in the late 1990s restaurants started coming up in the area, today it has around 40 restaurants, bars, pubs and cafe.

The mission statement of the competition was that Architecture in Transformation should make responses to current situation and era. What concerns us is the relationship between architecture and city, and the relationship between architecture and natural environment. The competition aims at searching and constructing human space with a sense of place in increasingly-fragmented cities or unordered villages, exploring environment-friendly and sustainable ideas in the information age, and integrating creative design concepts with solid basic skills effectively in architectural education. The competition requires the participants to make detailed examinations and reflections on architectural history, exploring complicated requirements to architecture and environment by current users, pay attention to events in specific sites, and configure viable urban and architectural spaces.

The aim of this competition was to design an Unexpected City is a city of wonder, a city where imagination, creativity, and the new have boldly surpassed what has been. The Unexpected City is a city which will find a new relationship between ancient tradition, modernity, and technology. It will offer a new perspective in space of living, nature, and respect for everyone with concrete architectural and urban projects. After all, home is not ‘where the heart is’ but where the house and neighborhood reside.

We looked for design ideas for transit shelters on site, for construction workers and their families, w here the quality of life is dignified.

How ever for the idea to be viable, these shelters on site should beneficial to the builder as well. Thus, the designs needed to be not only environmentally sustainable but also economically sustainable. The competition looked at design ideas which made for good business proposals to pitch to builders. So in this project, we developed a shelter for workers with unused containers.

Different units were developed for different families on the basis of number of people in the family. Accordingly, the container contained 8-6 units at a time. Each unit ‘s users had to access the toilets from the outside. Every container had a separate toilet. The space has been used most efficiently as possible.

The urban footprints of the main streets of Badami Precinct that lead to Agastya lake have remained more or less the same from Historical times. In Earlier periods, each of these main streets were organized by particular trades. Streets such as Nekar Oni and Badakar Oni celebrated the local crafts and trades while providing a specifi c character and thus EXPERIENCE to the streets. Learning from the Chalukyas; by leveraging and harnessing existing urban points of intervention in our pilot street; Re-utilizing, Re-orgnizing and Re-cycling, we aim to bring back the cultural, historical and local experience of BADAMI Precinct.- with minimum use of resources and time and maximum impact.

According to the data of registered architects under COA the findings were 92% of the architects registered under CoA in 2001 worked in the private practice and only 8% in the public practice.

And recent data of year 2016 suggests, just 1% of the women architects out of 44 % of total registered architects joined public practice and 99 % went for private practice. Yearwise analysis of graduating students from SPA Delhi since 2010 has got the same story where 90% of them join private sector.

Now a days the building cost is not the main criteria. The total cost of the project depends upon several factors like materials, context, site location, scale, time, quality of construction etc. Some of architect’s already follow this payment on square footage. And around the world, this is being followed.

AWARENESS- Awareness of the client.

GRIHA/LEED REGISTRATION - The sustainability of the building, orientation etc. can be incorporated in scope of services.

OPPORTUNITY COST- Equitable fee for the equitable work.
