Schechter’s Afterschool Program is designed to foster student curiosity, exploration and experimentation as an approach to learning. Our goal is to develop confident, curious learners eager to explore their interests. In the following pages you will find information about all our spring afterschool programs including Enrichment Classes, Afterschool Hour, Music Lessons and Extended Day.

Participate in HANDS ON STEAM PROGRAMS that promote innovative thinking and creative problem solving. In Lego Mindstorms (4-5) we’ll take you from the basics of building and movement to advanced navigation, sensors and teaching the robot how to make decisions for itself! In All About Robotics students will turn Sphero robots into Harry Potter wands, Magic 8 balls and more with the power of code (Grades 2-3). In Redstone Engineering with Minecraft (4-5) learn how to wire your buildings, create lights, hidden doors, automation and even simple logic through gamified learning. Come explore nature after school Puddlestompers (PreK-1) class! Spring topics include seed growth, signs of spring, bird nesting, frogs, trees, weather, mud and soil. Join Mr. Steve’s Science Studio in which you will experiment and test out your ideas in this makerspace environment (K-1). Get moving! Join one of the many athletic opportunities that help develop coordination, build skills and promote fitness: Running Club (1-3 and 4-5); Baseball (1-3); Basketball (2-3); Flag Football (4-5); Tennis (1-3). Other active choices await including Sports Galore (1-3); Superstar Dancers (K-1); Israeli Dance (2-3) and Hip Hop (4-5). The choices go on with theater, visual arts and cooking, all of which emphasize creativity and individual expression. We look forward to another great session with your children. AFTERSCHOOL AT SCHECHTER Extended Day For families who need their children to stay at Schechter at the end of the school day for the full afternoon, the Extended Day program is the best option. This program offers a dynamic array of activities as well as time for free play and socializing. Please email Greg Hampton at greg.hampton@ssdsboston.org for more information. Afterschool Hour Afterschool Hour is for families who want to have their children stay at Schechter for only one hour after the regular school day ends. Children can join our exciting Extended Day activities, enjoy supervised free play or take the time to socialize with friends. This is a more open alternative to enrichment classes. Understanding how computer programs work is a key skill for the STEM jobs of tomorrow. In this class we provide fun-filled, hands-on instruction on how to write, debug and execute computer programs. We will start low-tech, creating and running “human programs,” and work up to programming the popular Sphero robot, SPRK+.
Join Coach Rudy in a season of basketball! This class is geared for the student who loves basketball and wants to improve his or her skills. The class will consist of drills to develop shooting skills and ball handling techniques. Students will play a game each session! Rudy Crichlow, an elite basketball coach and the owner of Mass Commanders, will teach this class.
We will turn Sphero robots into Magic 8 balls, automated red light/green light games, Harry Potter magic wands and more with the power of code!

SCIENCE STUDIO: grades K-1........................................ $190 Steve Lechner Participate in this open-science studio focused on students I.D.E.A.S. (Inventions, Discoveries, Experiments, Activities, SCIENCE!). This workshop will include Building and Constructing Kits/Toys, Take-Apart Machine Space, Science Kit Center and a Design Center. This is not a traditional led-by-the teacher afterschool class, but a more childdirected program in which the students decide what to do based on their own interests and ideas. Mr. Steve will work as a coach and mentor guiding students through their learning experiences with advice and inspiration. If you are looking for a “makerspace” environment to test out your ideas and inventions, this is the place for you! SUPERSTAR DANCERS: grades K-1................................$195 Siagel Productions Kids will bust a move with an amazing instructor from The Dance Academy of Siagel Productions as they learn new skills, rhythm, coordination and dance routines each week. Music will vary from pop to high-energy dance songs from around the world. Second- and third-graders are invited to this special young actors’ theater class focused on character development, vocal technique, dance and confidence on stage. Students will prepare a final Musical Revue performing songs from current and classic Broadway shows! This class is limited to 14 students. Final performance will include the Drama Kids and be on Tuesday, June 9.
Warm up your singing voices! In this class we will perform songs and dances from Broadway favorites such as Mary Poppins, Annie, The Lion King and more! This class is process oriented, playful, and full of problem solving and inventive thinking. Artists will use a variety of materials: wood shapes, Styrofoam, paper, cardboard, wire, clay, papier-maché recycled objects. Ideas for the projects will come from the artists and from suggestions by the teacher. We hope to make papier-maché puppets, ceramic wind chimes and clay pottery, imaginary or realistic creations. Students may work individually or together in groups.

Welcome to Sports Galore! This is a great introduction to a variety of different sports such as hockey, soccer, football, kickball and dodgeball. The sport of the week changes every week, and we will not repeat a sport two weeks in a row. Skills of each sport will be learned in a fun-filled, non-competitive atmosphere followed by playing the game of the week! This class will be taught by Valeo Futbol Coach, Jared Lewis.
Fencing, the art of swordsmanship, has been practiced for centuries. Originally geared for combat it is now staged for Olympic gold. The sport of fencing develops quick thinking, discipline, agility and speed. Most importantly, it is safe and enjoyable.
Tennis: grades 1-3............................................................$280 Newton Parks and Recreation Learn tennis basics including forehands, backhands, serves and volleys, proper movement and the rules of the game. E X T E N D E D D AY P R O G R A M Extended Day offers students in PreKindergarten through Grade 8 an array of supervised activities as well as time for free play and socializing until 6:15 p.m. (grades PreK-3) or 6:30 p.m. (grades 4-8) each day with earlier dismissal on Fridays based on Shabbat. Registration for Extended Day takes place through the SchechterHub. Forms for Extended Day registration will be available on your account. Billing for Extended Day is processed through Smart Tuition together with regular core Day School tuition. Extended Day families who register their child for an enrichment class (on a day that she/he is registered for Extended Day) will receive a credit for that hour of Extended Day (at your billable rate). Families with two working parents who receive financial aid for tuition are also eligible to Semester receive financial aid for ExtendedSpring Day tuition.
