DEAR SCHECHTER COMMUNITY, D
The Schechter community is strong
uring the 2016-2017 school year, the Board devoted its energy to supporting Rebecca Lurie as she assumed the Head of School role. She is an outstanding leader who is committed to Schechter’s success. Through a communitywide strategic visioning process, the Board approved the guideposts for our innovative plan and we know that Rebecca is excited to bring this vision to fruition.
because of a dedicated It is a critical time in the life of all Jewish day schools and the Board is committed to securing the financial sustainability
Board of Trustees, an of Schechter for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of many people, Schechter’s future looks bright. As we approach
amazing Head of School, the final stages of our Generations Endowment Campaign and generous donors who support our bold, strategic initiatives.
focused on excellence and affordability, we take pride in knowing that it is the most successful Campaign in the School's history. As a result, our endowment has nearly doubled because 140 donors came forward to give outright gifts now and 43 people have informed us that they have included Schechter in their estate plans. Even as we look to the future, Schechter relies on the generous support of donors every year to provide much-needed resources to deliver an excellent education rooted in Jewish values to all students. Over 800 people supported the Annual Campaign last year! Some gave for the first time while others renewed their support for their 20th consecutive year. The school is grateful for every gift. The Annual Campaign, often considered a barometer of an institution’s health, saw record participation rates among parents and faculty and staff. The Schechter community is filled with dedicated thoughtleaders, faculty and staff, volunteers, and generous donors who all give their time and resources to support the school. The Board of Trustees work tirelessly on behalf of an institution they love and it has been my honor to serve as President. Thanks to the generosity of many and Rebecca’s inspiring leadership, I am confident that Schechter is poised for continued greatness.
L’shalom,
Lauri Union President, Board of Trustees 1
DEAR SCHECHTER COMMUNITY, A
s I reflect on this past year, I am proud of all that we accomplished and am excited for what lies ahead. In particular:
• Bringing individuals onto the Hanhallah (leadership team) and welcoming new faculty and staff to our school with specific expertise to help shape and deliver our program • Investing in teacher schedules to give them much needed time to collaborate with, and learn from, one another • Expanding our bus routes to better meet the needs of our families • Relocating our Pre-Kindergarten class to the Lower School in order to bridge our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs, and at the same time, expand our toddler program • Conducting comprehensive reviews of our curricula, starting with Science and Tanakh • Creating even more meaningful, joyful Jewish experiences throughout the school day I am reminded of the legacy left by those who preceded me every day, and I am grateful for the countless people who have contributed both time and resources over the years to ensure the school’s success. I have learned over the past year how much our school relies on the time, talent and resources of our community members and I am inspired every day by your commitment. Schechter benefits

from the generous support of alumni, alumni parents, current parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends. We continue to be a thriving institution thanks to the philanthropic support of so many who care about our students, faculty and our school’s future. Your gifts allow us to continue to provide a uniquely compelling education. I am pleased to report that we achieved our ambitious Annual Campaign goal of $1,500,000 through gifts ranging in size from $2 to $125,000+. I am thrilled to report that both parent and faculty and staff participation rates reached all-time highs – parents at 85 percent and faculty and staff at 79 percent! As we strive to make Schechter an even stronger institution, your support is much appreciated. In addition to supporting our Annual Campaign, over 500 people have given to the Generations Campaign and 43 people have included Schechter in their estate planning. Thanks to a healthy endowment, students will continue to benefit from a Schechter education for generations to come. Your generous support now ensures Schechter’s future. You understand the value of a Schechter education and the profound impact it has on our students.
In this annual report, I am pleased to highlight this year’s recipients of the Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding Alumni Award, Rahel Berkovits ’83 and Jackie Schon ’99. Both women are innovators in their respective fields and have had tremendous impact on their communities. Schechter is proud of their accomplishments and we invite you to read more about them and all of our donors, in the year to come. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Head of School at Schechter and I thank you for your support and partnership.
Todah Rabah,
Rebecca Cole Lurie ’93 Head of School
A
s I review the Annual Report and see the long list of wonderful supporters of Schechter, I am gratified to see so many people dedicated to Schechter’s success.
I firmly believe that a Schechter education inspires our children to become great Jewish
I see young parents whose Schechter journey is just beginning; I see faculty and staff who believe in the product they deliver every day; and, I see grandparents who kvell when they hear what their grandchildren are learning at Schechter. I see alumni who continue to support the school, long after they have graduated, knowing that Schechter was a force in shaping who they are today. And, I see alumni parents, like Barbara and me, who are grateful for their child’s education. Ten years ago, when Barbara and I were looking for a school
citizens of the world. for our soon-to-be Kindergartener, we wanted to find a place with a focus on substantive Jewish content, a secular curriculum that would provide a framework for educational excellence, and a nurturing, comfortable environment, with teachers who would mentor her; and, would support, encourage and shape her learning process. Schechter was the right choice for our family. We knew then that Schechter’s graduates go on to be successful in a modern and complicated world, and to possess and practice a Jewish value system in their daily lives. Barbara and I believe that the investment we made in a Schechter education for our daughter, Ashley, has paid immeasurable dividends. Today, we are more confident than ever that Ashley is poised for success as she continues her educational journey at Gann Academy, thanks to the solid foundation she received at Schechter. I firmly believe that a Schechter education inspires our children to become great Jewish citizens of the world. I hope that Schechter graduates will continue harkening back to their early educational roots; and, will support Schechter so the next generation of young American Jews can reap the same benefits. I hope Schechter parents and grandparents continue to reflect on what Schechter has meant to their children and grandchildren, and continue to support the School. Thank you all for your steadfast commitment to a place we all hold dear in our hearts.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI Rahel Berkovits ’83 At Schechter’s graduation, Rahel Berkovits ’83 and Jackie Schon ’99 were honored as this year’s recipients of the Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding Alumni Award for leading lives embodying Schechter’s vision and mission.
R
ahel Berkovits ’83 is a trailblazer in bridging the worlds of feminism and halacha in the 21st century. She is on the faculty of the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, where for the past 20 years she has been teaching Mishnah, Talmud and Halacha. In 2015, Rahel completed her studies at Beit Midrash Har’el and received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Herzl Hefter and Rabbi Daniel Sperber, making her one of the first women ever to be ordained as an Orthodox Rav. She is a founding member of Congregation Shirah Hadasha, a progressive halakhic minyan, which is enriched by both male and female participation in synagogue ritual and has published the book A Daughter’s Recitation of Mourner’s Kaddish. Many of Rahel’s Talmud students at Pardes have gone on to become Jewish Studies teachers at Schechter. Schechter classmate Glen Schwaber writes, “As an outstanding educator, an outspoken and effective community leader, a Zionist, a devoted spouse and parent, and a committed and proud Jew, Rahel’s life exemplifies Schechter’s vision and mission to the fullest.” Upon accepting the Outstanding Alumni Award at graduation, Rahel’s parents Shim and Lea Berkovits shared the following Torah lesson from Rahel: Today, unfortunately, the world is more fragmented than ever. We are divided by politics, our views on Israel, our views on religion. We are scared of the other – scared of those who think differently from us, who dresses differently from us – who speak differently from us – who are different from ourselves. Sadly chauvinism, homophobia, xenophobia and anti-Semitism have not yet ceased to exist. You – class of 2017 – are growing up in a challenging time but please “remember this important central value of what – I believe – it means to be a Jew.” The second chapter of Mishnah Berakhot is struggling with the question of balancing one’s relationship with the Divine and one’s relationship with other people. To greet and to inquire about the well-being [Shalom] of another human being means to recognize the other as worthy of your concern and acknowledgment. The mishnah seems to be saying that it would be impossible to fully proclaim God’s oneness in this world if one were to directly ignore another person – any person – standing in front of one’s eyes, who themselves is created in the image of the Divine! One cannot fully know God and proclaim God’s unity without knowledge of the well-being of other people. Not only should the recitation of Shema acknowledge other people and the wider community outside one’s self but when one greets a friend one should turn that greeting into a statement about the Divine in this world. The two statements of “God is one” and “Hello, how are you?” are really part of and parcel of one single Jewish belief statement about how we should see and treat others around us. With that Torah message I wish you – graduates of 2017 – much hatzlakha and mazal tov, as you go off to new places, face new challenges, and meet new people.

Jackie Schon ’99
J
ackie Schon ’99 was selected for her innovative business model, community service work and vision-driven leadership. In 2010, Jackie’s artistic background and “no option to fail” attitude positioned her to co-found The Paint Bar, Boston’s first “paint and sip” business (and the first business of its kind in the Northeast) with her mother, Jill Schon. Since its opening, Jackie has led The Paint Bar’s creative team, to inspire more than 50,000 customers with little or no artistic background to discover their inner artist. In addition, The Paint Bar has hosted fundraisers for hundreds of non-profit organizations, contributing thousands of dollars on behalf of their supporters. Jackie’s sister and fellow alumna writes, “My sister, Jackie, applies sensitivity and originality to every task she approaches, whether it is volunteering with Jewish Big Brother Big Sister, painting a still life, or organizing Schechter’s 50th Anniversary event. She is an intuitive and gifted artist and businesswoman; this has served her well as she has the unique ability to channel her inspiration and energy. She sees the world through a colorful lens and inspires those around her to do the same.” Upon accepting the Outstanding Alumni Award at graduation, Jackie shared top 11 lessons from her days at Schechter. Here are some highlights: • Tefillah – An hour we spent together every morning taught me patience and the importance of connecting with others. • Being Shabbat Ima taught me how to organize an event. I had to learn how to bring enough supplies for the whole class as well as figure out how to differentiate my shabbat from all the others. • Tzedakah has played an extremely important role in my life. Events like the Dance Marathon taught me about fundraising. • Respect your Elders – This is crucially important when running a business with your mom! So be kind to your parents as you just may end up working with them one day.
