VALUES for Life
Greetings
Dear Schechter Community,
“
L We are grateful for the support of our amazing faculty, staff, parents, alumni and alumni parents, grandparents and Jewish community members, which you offered last year in so many ways.
”
ast year was a momentous one for our beloved school. The year began with the Board engaging with and listening to you, our community, to learn about your hopes and dreams for Schechter. Those discussions, which reaffirmed our mutual passion for our mission, led to a community conversation about the type of leader who could help the school achieve our goals. When one of our own, Rebecca Cole Lurie ’93, stepped forward with the exact qualities we most needed and a deep passion for everything Schechter stands for, we knew it was beshert (a fortuitous event that was meant to be).
We are grateful for the support of our amazing faculty, staff, parents, alumni and alumni parents, grandparents and Jewish community members, which you offered last year in so many ways. With your support, we closed our largest Annual Campaign ever at $1,515,000 and have now raised $9,200,000 in gifts and pledges toward our $12,500,000 Generations Endowment Campaign goal. Over 250 of you attended sessions to share your views about our school’s vision and to offer your help to achieve it. With your input, we were able to identify the three pillars for exploration in our ongoing strategic planning process: • 21st Century Learning Through a Jewish Lens • Inspirational, Authentic Jewish Experience • Engaging, Collaborative and Caring Culture and Community As we eagerly enter our new school year, we look forward to seeing Rebecca’s leadership unfold and the wonderful impact we know it will have on the school this year and in the future. Thank you for all you have done to help bring us to this exciting moment. L’shalom, Lauri Union President, Board of Trustees

Dear Schechter Community,
S
ince last spring, I have connected with many of you and in that process I have learned a tremendous amount about your vision for Schechter. I am truly inspired by the passion this community has for our school and its mission. With that in mind, aligned with our emerging strategic vision and together with our Hanhallah (leadership team), I have established a set of very ambitious goals that we, together, will achieve for Schechter:
“
• Facilitate intellectual curiosity and a love of learning in every student through an innovative, rigorous and engaging program I am truly inspired
• Ignite a spark in Judaism and love for Israel
by the passion this
• Foster a caring, collaborative and joyful culture and community
community has for our school and its mission.
”
And ultimately we hope that Schechter will be such a compelling experience that families will decide to move to Boston in order to attend our school. One of my first steps in launching this process was to hire Mark Springer as our new Associate Head of School for Program and Instruction. For the past 21 years, Mark has been the principal of the Mason Rice School in Newton, which has been rated the top public elementary school in the United States. With Mark’s guidance, this coming year will be focused around building Schechter’s fundamental capacity to provide an outstanding educational program. I am exhilarated by the opportunities for our school, which I know will be possible because of the extraordinary efforts of our faculty and staff together with your continued support. L’shalom, Rebecca Lurie Head of School

#ThereIsNoPlaceLikeSchechter At Schechter we… Facilitate an engaging, innovative and rigorous educational program that brings out the best in each and every student.
“
I believe that teaching is as important as parenting in building a strong ethical and moral character in children. I personally am grateful for a job that is meaningful and has the added spiritual component of helping to pass on to the next generation a tradition of which I am proud.
”
Reena Schultz ’73 Lower School Director of Support Services/Instructional Specialist

At Schechter we… Ignite a spark of Jewish identity and a love of Israel in our students.
“
Being part of Schechter’s Jewish community has helped me create long-lasting relationships and connections. Schechter has inspired me and led me to appreciate and love learning and living a Jewish life. David Gerard ’16

At Schechter we‌ Cultivate a collaborative, joyful and inclusive community.
“
Schechter has an outstanding community of students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni. We are so grateful that from the moment our children started at Schechter, its community felt like a second family, and the school felt like a second home. Amy and Jason Comander, Schechter parents

Highlights from the 2015-16 School Year An Early Start to Engineering and Physics in Preschool
S
cience is an everyday activity for our preschoolers. The Koffim class had a mini-lesson in engineering and physics in which they explored what happens to marbles, ping pong balls and pompoms when they are rolled down and through a homemade bottle maze. Through trial and error, the children worked together to make decisions regarding angles, inclines and planes in order to discover the most efficient way to get the balls to land in the cups.
Kindergarten Celebrates Shabbat with Song and Dance In addition to their celebrations in preparation for Shabbat each week, kindergarten students have engaged in a more in-depth study of Shabbat. Each student made a kiddush cup, challah cover, tzedakah box, havdallah set, challah plate and many more Shabbat items. The Shabbat unit culminated with a family program celebrating Shabbat through song and dance. Weekly Parasha Comes Alive in Grade 1 First graders not only learned about the plagues, but with the help of their teachers, they experienced them! The children acted out the plagues in each classroom using their bodies: they used food coloring to change water into blood; jumped through the classroom as frogs; walked through hanging lice in the door (rice stuck to long strips of tape!); roared like wild beasts in the hall; collapsed as diseased livestock; had stickers placed over their bodies like boils; heard thunder, lightning and had tissue paper hail rain down on them; watched a buzzing field of locusts; covered themselves for darkness and pretended to paint blood on the door post.

Second Graders Study Immigration and Family Journeys As part of a unit on immigration, second-grade students studied the immigration patterns of Jews around the world and interviewed their own family and friends to gain a more personal perspective. Using what they learned in the interviews, students created posters documenting the immigration process of their interviewees. The culmination of the immigration unit was the “Family Journeys” play during which the students took their families and guests on a trip around the world as they traced the history of Jews from Abraham and Sarah to the Jews of Spain and Eastern Europe, singing songs in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino.
Third Graders Go Back in Time with Colonial Day Third-grade students took an in-depth look at American history this year beginning with an interactive unit on colonial times. Each student researched one of the colonies on his or her own, while the class learned about the Massachusetts colony together. As a culminating activity, students and teachers dressed in colonial clothing. The students rotated stations from calligraphy writing with a feather on old-looking, tea-dipped paper to other stations including churning butter, marble games (no iPads here!), making a silhouette and more!
Fourth Graders Visit the JFK Museum As part of their unit on biographies, fourth-grade students learned about primary sources and civil rights during a field trip to the JFK Library and Presidential Museum. Their learning focused on John F. Kennedy’s contribution to civil rights, a key component of our social studies curriculum and extensive Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights movement. The trip dovetailed with the students’ reading of Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Wooodson, an autobiography told in blank verse that begins in 1963, and is this year’s all-school read. Their trip to the Library made learning come to life.

Fifth Grade Students Practice Decimals at Shoolman Campus Shuk Fifth grade students used their math skills to navigate through an Israeli shuk. The stores included an Israeli food shop, Judaica boutique, sports store, pharmacy and a clothing store with the latest fashions. To integrate Judaics and math in a real life setting, students were assigned to shop and spend 200 shekels and enter all the debits and credits. Students practiced adding and subtracting with decimals. The goal was to come as close to zero as possible without overspending or borrowing money from a friend or the bank.
Schechter Students Excel in Letters About Literature Writing Contest Sixteen sixth graders and 14 fourth graders advanced to the semi-finals of the annual Massachusetts Letters About Literature writing contest. In this contest, students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. The program administrator writes, “Our judges read each letter with great interest and appreciate having the opportunity to listen to and learn from your students... They clearly excelled in this year’s program, and we hope you will pass along our congratulations to them.” Kol HaKavod to all of our semi-finalists!
Seventh Grade Students’ Interests Magnified in Science Seventh-grade students enjoyed several free “Microscope Days” during which they could look at objects of their choice under a light or dissecting microscope. Students looked at a variety of things, from blueberries to stickers to pieces of their own hair! The objects that proved the most interesting were electronic as students could see individual pixels in the screens as well as the red, green and blue colors that combine to make up images.

Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team wins Jewish Day School League Tournament! Mazal tov to the Schechter Girls’ Varsity Basketball team and its coaches, Bill Ferreira and Josh Bartley, on their victory over Maimonides in the Jewish Day School League Basketball Tournament Playoffs. The girls won the championship 53-51 in overtime.
Eighth-Grade Takes Audiences to Oz and Back in All-Hebrew Musical Production Mazal tov to our eighth grade students and thank you to the many faculty, staff and parent volunteers who made this year’s all-Hebrew musical production of The Wizard of Oz possible. Artistic Director Trudy Fagen shares, “it was great to see the children and backstage parents come together as a working theatre community. The love, support, hard work and pride they took in each other was evident in their magical performance. The production is truly a living breathing art form that, as a whole, was larger than its parts. There is no way to quantify the enormous amount learned from stage crew, parent helpers, actors and production staff nor the magnitude of beauty and entertainment that was manifest.”

Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding At Schechter's graduation, Heidi (Birnbaum) Aaronson '96 and Yossi Abramowitz ’78 were honored as this year's recipients of the Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding Alumni Award for leading lives embodying Schechter's vision and mission.
Yosef Abramowitz ’78 is an
influential, entrepreneurial and innovative leader in the field of solar energy. President of Gigawatt Global and its Israeli affiliate Energiya Global, he is a 2015 Nobel Prize nominee for Gigawatt Global’s work with the Rwandan solar field project, which now provides 6 percent of the country’s power. He co-founded the first Israeli solar company, Arava Power, in 2006. CNN named Abramowitz as one of the top six Green Pioneers worldwide.
10
In his own eighth-grade graduation speech at Schechter, Yossi wrote, “In this school, I have developed two special interests: Tanakh and science. I will pursue my interest in Tanakh at Hebrew College next year, and will start studying for a career in science at Brookline High School. Schechter has prepared me well in both of these areas, and I look forward eagerly to next year.” Upon accepting the Outstanding Alumni Award at graduation, Yossi’s daughter shared the following words from her father, “During my time at Schechter, I doodled my first solar invention which was a solar powered electric car. It’s not an accident that I ended up in solar energy in Israel given my love at Schechter for science.”
Alumni Award
Heidi Birnbaum Aaronson ’96
was selected for her significant contributions to the dental profession and to her community. Heidi organizes an annual public health event with the Red Sox – Tooth Day at Fenway – that brings awareness of the dangers of chewing tobacco and the risk of oral cancer. Heidi gives back to her community by providing dental exams and treatments to soldiers who are preparing for active duty and to the Jewish community by participating in a program that provides free dental treatments to Holocaust survivors. Her contributions to the field of dentistry have earned her one of the Massachusetts Dental Society’s top awards, the “Ten Under Ten.” Heidi’s brother Daniel Birnbaum ’94 writes, “And while I am certain that she is proud of all of her accomplishments, Heidi’s proudest moment was when she walked her 5-year-old daughter, Abby, to her first day
of kindergarten at Schechter, to the very same classroom in which she was a student 28 years ago. As evident from all she has done in her career thus far, Heidi clearly embodies Schechter’s vision and mission.” Upon accepting the Outstanding Alumni Award at graduation, Heidi shared the following, “I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a dentist, and Schechter helped nurture and encourage that desire from the very beginning… And part of the reason why I was able to fulfill my dreams, succeed in school and become a dentist, marry an amazing man and raise our two beautiful daughters in a loving, Jewish household is because Schechter instilled in me a love of Judaism, a passion for learning, an understanding of the need for tikkun olam and, most importantly, showing me that no matter what you want to do in life, anything is possible.”

Strengthening our community, our school, our future We are so pleased to share that we have raised a record $1,515,636 for this year’s Annual Campaign, from 861 donors – a 10 percent increase. Thanks to all of you, we
educated over 480 children ages 18 months through grade 8. Your support benefits all the wonderful learning happening every day, all day long, at the school. Your support touches every part of the school – our students, dedicated faculty and staff, our classrooms, the science rooms, libraries, the afterschool program, our creative and performing arts and athletic programs, and our other beautiful indoor and outdoor physical spaces. Your support enables us to provide financial aid to more than 50 percent of our students – enriching our community with their presence. You help us provide students with the learning, encouragement and self-confidence that develop future leaders with a strong value system and moral compass – so needed in the world. The Generations Endowment Campaign for Affordability and Excellence has also had a very strong year. We have
now raised a total of $9.2 million in pledges and gifts for our endowment, including both outright and legacy gifts, towards our goal of $12.5 million. As you will see in this report, we welcome 33 members to our Generations Legacy Society, chaired by Shira Goodman, alumni parent and past Schechter president. Members of the Society have included Schechter in their estate plans. This is a powerful vote of confidence in the school and a testament to the important impact it has on our children. All of this is possible thanks to the hard work of our Board of Trustees, volunteers, staff and our many donors. A special
thanks goes to the Annual Campaign Chairs, Michael Hackel and Ellis V. Morris; VP of Development, Abby Sosland; and Generations Chairs, Harvey Freishtat, Yael Miller ’73 and Barbara Resnek, who have worked tirelessly to help us achieve our goals. And thank you to all our donors – students, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends, who respond with great generosity in support of Schechter.

Generations Legacy Society Members of the Generations Legacy Society are individuals or couples who indicate that they have made provisions for the school through their estate plan for the benefit of future generations of children. When the legacy gifts are realized by the school, they become a part of the school’s endowment. With the establishment of the Generations Legacy Society, planned giving has become an important vehicle for supporting the school alongside Annual and Capital or Endowment Giving. To learn more about how to make a legacy gift and join the Generations Legacy Society, please contact Natalie Matus, Associate Head of School for Institutional Advancement, at 617-630-4617 or natalie.matus@ssdsboston.org.
