AMY TROY

JAKE BAGGETT

Amy Troy anchors the 8 O’clock News on PDX TV and the 10 O’clock News each weeknight on FOX 12.

Jake Baggett was born and raised in lush Oregon State and his first auction experience came at a very young age when his father took him to auction. Over time Jake has learned much about the auction business through his father and his own personal experiences in the varied auction environments he has worked in. Jake joined the Stokes Auction Group family in 2005 as a bid spotter and found a new passion in helping others through the auction craft.

Your Emcee

Amy is a native Oregonian who grew up on a farm in the southern part of the state. She’s also a “Fighting Duck” who studied Journalism at The University of Oregon. Amy even started her career in television news at stations in Bend and Eugene before taking jobs in San Antonio, Salt Lake City and Phoenix. She returned to anchor positions in the Pacific Northwest in 2005 to be closer to her family and joined KPTV in April of 2013. Amy has received several honors in her career, including a prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for a story called “Kaden” while working at KNXV TV in Phoenix. The Utah Broadcaster’s Association also awarded her for Children’s Initiative Reporting. In addition, Amy been honored with Emmy nominations for Spot News Reporting & Cultural Issues Reporting. She has also been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, Arizona Broadcasters Association and Oregon Broadcasters Association for reporting. Please welcome Amy as she graciously helps us navigate through this year’s VCS GALA!

Your Auctioneer

In 2006, Jake attended the Western College of Auctioneering and after graduating has served schools, medical research foundations, and other humanitarian organizations. Many enjoy watching Jake entertain through his ability to connect with those in the audience in order to reach the financial goals many charities strive for. When Jake is not taking the stage, he often enjoys the scenery around his Oregon home near Mount Hood. He also describes himself as a “true outdoorsman” and enjoys anything involving the terrain. Any of Jake’s leisure time that is not spent tackling nature is spent following sports. Jake’s interests allow him to connect with his audience and bring passion to any items used to raise funds for the cause.

GALA CO-CHAIRS

Genevieve & Chris Long

PARENTS OF ELLA ’20 (4TH GRADE) AND ANA ’22 (2ND GRADE)

We are humbled and amazed, yet not surprised, by the very special Valley Catholic School community that we are a part of. We are moved by the generosity and thoughtful giving from our school families and friends. The Gala is a gathering and an effort like no other. It brings together our unique and diverse community, truly the heart of Valley Catholic School. Because of the unending inspiration of our gifted teachers, staff, administrators, coaches and Sisters, Valley Catholic is the “best school on Earth,” as quoted by our daughters, Ella and Ana. This is truly a night to celebrate Valley Catholic School. It is a night that makes a significant difference in the lives of all of our children. Thank you for your commitment to our school community and your generous hearts. We feel incredibly blessed… 9

“Light a Fire” “EDUCATION IS NOT THE FILLING OF A PAIL, BUT THE LIGHTING OF A FIRE.” - W. B. YEATS

Every student, every family and every classroom at Valley Catholic is impacted by financial aid. Some students, who are vital components of our student body, who bring unique gifts to our classrooms, would not be a part of our community without financial aid. Since the founding of our school, the Sisters have devoted themselves to meeting the needs of others. Tonight you can continue that legacy by making a generous donation to “Light a Fire.” Keep this in mind when raising your bid card: • On average, tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating each student • Financial aid helps keep our classrooms full and vibrant • Families attending VCS with the help of financial aid receive 50% or less of the aid for which they qualify • Your gift determines whether or not some students are able to attend Valley Catholic • Financial aid enables families who experience unexpected hardship to remain enrolled at VCS Be ready to raise your bid card during this extremely important part of tonight’s event. Matching Gifts: Many employers will match gifts that are made to “Light a Fire.” Matching gifts are often 50% to 100% of your donation, significantly increasing the impact of your generosity. For more information, go to ssmofoundation.org. 10

Frequently Asked Questions WHAT IS THE WALL OF WINE?

WHAT IS THE MINI-LIVE?

The Wall of Wine is a popular feature of the Silent Auction. For only $20, you may choose a “mystery bottle” of red or white wine. The featured bottles of wine have a value of at least $20, and often more. Tonight’s Wall of Wine was generously donated by our board directors.

The coveted, creative Grade Projects will be featured in a special portion of the evening called the Mini-Live. Grade Projects can be bid on during the Silent Auction beginning at 5:00 p.m. At 6:15 the Mini-Live will begin. Each Grade Project bid sheet will be removed and used as a starting point for the Auctioneer who will begin the oral bidding process. Be ready, this moves quickly. You won’t want to miss your chance to go home with your child’s project. All Grade Projects will be sold during the Mini-Live PRIOR to the Live Auction.

WHAT IS A SIGN-UP PARTY? Sign-up Parties are a great way for you and/or your kids to participate in unique experiences with others in our school community. Sign-up Parties range in size from 6 to 60. The Signup Party boards are on display during the Silent Auction. You may add your name to as many lines as you wish, one name per line on the bid sheet. Parties fill up fast!

WHAT IS A GOLDEN TICKET? Win the chance to go home with the live auction item of your choice! Bidding takes place during dinner. • Tickets will be $100 each. • Only 100 tickets are available – you may purchase more than one ticket. • Be ready during dinner to raise your bidder number in the air. • Drawing will take place before the live auction.

WHAT IS LIGHT A FIRE? Light a Fire is a special paddle-raise, held during the Live Auction that impacts all of us by benefiting financial aid at Valley Catholic. Our school depends on financial aid to provide all students with the opportunity to experience the stellar education offered at Valley. Light a Fire gifts help maintain our enrollment and keep the cost of tuition as low as possible. Our auctioneer will offer a variety of giving levels. You may participate at the level with which you are most comfortable by raising your bidder number. Please continue to hold your bid card in the air until the auctioneer acknowledges your bid number. You may bid as often as you like until your desired contribution level is met. See more about light a Fire on p. 10.

Mini-Live Auction The Mini-Live Auction features the creative and coveted Grade Projects, otherwise known as one-of-akind pieces of art created by our K – 8th grade students. These beautiful pieces will be on display near the Silent Auction room on the main floor. Listen for the announcements stating the Mini-Live is beginning. Bidding begins at 6:15 and moves quickly! This is one of the best parts of the evening – you won’t want to miss it. 13

KINDERGARTEN PROJECT:

Natural Impressions Chairs and Book JERI LYN DAVIS & TERRYSUE GREMAUX MEGAN WILLIAMSON & CARRIE MARKEY

This is probably the only time you’ll love your child’s fingerprints all over your furniture. The kindergarten classes decorated two chairs with playful bugs, buzzing bees and stunning flowers from their unique prints. These chairs and accompanying book of words of wisdom drawings will preserve lifelong memories of your child and their classmates’ first year of grade school. With the original design by Kindergarten teacher Megan Williamson (KW) and finishing touches by Assistant Teacher TerrySue Gremaux (KD), these make perfect practical and artistic additions to your home. Many thanks to Lois O’Halloran, Janice Butz, Alyson Grant, Elizabeth Strayer and Tamara Ottum for coordinating this project. Also, thank you to the Frank and Kobayashi families for their support.

14

FIRST-GRADE PROJECT:

Butterflies Flutter By on Canvas ALINA BEST & JULIE CANOY KELSEY WOLFE & SR. JUANA GUTIERREZ, SSMO

You can’t help but feel freedom and joy from gazing at this gorgeous butterfly collage by the first grade class. Students carefully water-colored their own paper butterflies, which were mounted on a soft blue canvas in a three dimensional array. What’s more, the accompanying book showcases what makes each student happiest. These beautiful and winsome works will remind you of the beauty and joy life brings. Many thanks to Sarah Reid and Kari Eastburn-Bonnett for coordinating this project.

15

SECOND-GRADE PROJECT:

Portland—We Love It! MEG COUSSENS ’04 & MIRANDA BRIM MEGAN SMITH & HEATHER GENTRY

The second grade class has developed a Portland-based project, and the things our children most appreciate about living here. Two photo canvasses for each 2nd grade class feature an historic image of the city. The first displays the iconic White Stag sign in downtown Portland with students’ hand drawn pictures of what they love about their city on small paper leaves. The other canvas features a vintage – early 40’s or 50’s – travel ad poster of Mt. Hood by Anderson Design Group. Each child drew a small picture on a paper leaf that represents what he or she likes about Portland; it’s a hip take on a hip place! Many thanks to Marie Bunag, Sara Hoppes, Julie Sherwin, Caroline Budiman and Genevieve Long for coordinating this project.

16

THIRD-GRADE PROJECT:

Better Together Puzzle NANCY FALLIN & MONIQUE IERARDI TRICIA CROY & AKHILA MADHUSUDAN

Each third grade student painted a puzzle piece and placed them together to show their class unity. Encasing the art is a beautiful frame handcrafted by one of our own Valley Catholic parents, Brad Spiering. Worked from black walnut and Brazilian cherry, Brad salvaged the wood from an old farmstead in Gales Creek and a remodel in Lake Grove. This is truly a work of natural Oregon art that will remain close to your heart. Many thanks to Abbie Jordan, Christina Lion, Brad and Sarah Spiering for coordinating this project.

17

FOURTH-GRADE PROJECT:

Roots and Wings Book and Painting CHRISTINA FLINT & KATHLEEN BIRRELL KIMBERLY SMITH & CAROL PAUSZ

Our fourth graders drew inspiration from the following quote: “There are two gifts we should give our children; one is roots and the other is wings. To emulate this sentiment, students sketched a tree on canvas and cut it into 60 pieces. Each student then painted a small watercolor image that illustrated his or her family. Every piece was then put back together to recreate the original tree in a soft, beautiful watercolor collage. The students also wrote short pieces about the gifts they receive from their parents. Those writing samples and a photo of each student holding his or her painting are included in a book showcasing the individual contributions and thoughts of each student. Many thanks to Jeanelle Lindsey, Genevieve Long, Stella Tan, Mari Hotchkiss and Sarah Reid for coordinating this project.

18

FIFTH-GRADE PROJECT:

Sign-of-Signs Shadow Box CONNIE HEGER ELIZABETH WHITE KARA KINCAID-MCGEHEE CAROL PAUSZ

Each student carefully etched a representation of the cross with their names and images that provide glimpses into their personal offerings from their beautiful world. The crosses are made from cut sheets of copper donated by a Portland business with family ties to Valley Catholic School. This collage of crosses will be right at home in yours. Many thanks to Stephanie Brown-Matthews, Mechelle Hansen, Amy Ware, Laura Kuhner and Bianca Nerenberg for coordinating this project.

19

SIXTH-GRADE PROJECT:

Middle School Memories The 6th Grade Class has submitted a limited edition, signed poster for the lucky successful bidder! Accompanying the poster is a photo book containing images from their special time together at Outdoor School, this year taking place at Camp Howard in November 2014. Remember the storyteller and the bird of prey show? They were all wonderful memories that both the student and family will treasure always. Photographic and design services generously donated by: Lois O’Halloran Photography and Todd Sargood, SSMO Communications

20

SEVENTH-GRADE PROJECT:

Waves of Love

The 7th Grade Class has provided an informal but engaging group shot, enlarged to poster-size and carefully signed by each student. In addition, their “Waves of Love” service experience in Rockaway Beach has been carefully reproduced in the accompanying photo book. The book is a wonderful look back at their time spent at Camp Magruder, cleaning the beach with SOLVE and spreading a “Wave of Love” throughout the community. Memories such as these are truly priceless! Photographic and design services generously donated by: Lois O’Halloran Photography and Todd Sargood, SSMO Communications

21

EIGHTH-GRADE PROJECT:

Graduates – Soon To Be

Soon-to-be graduates, here is a last, informal look at the 8th grade class. Their class photo has been made into a poster, mounted on poster board, and signed by each student. Along with this unique memento, the class will compile a photo book of their “Graduation GetAway” to take place in May 2015 at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains. The annual event will be filled with reflection, games and fun in the sun. This last look back at their time as a class will be captured in still photos and gathered into a photobook to treasure always. Photographic and design services generously donated by: Lois O’Halloran Photography and Todd Sargood, SSMO Communications

We are fortunate to have people in our school community who are willing to play a role in the success of the Gala, an event that impacts the lives of everyone at Valley Catholic. You are truly appreciated!

Gala Auction Rules REGISTRATION • All bidders must register. You will be given an identification number to use for all bidding. One number will be given per family unit or individual guest; if requested, a family unit may request to have individual numbers. • Your signature on the registration form constitutes a legal contract to buy any item for which you are successful in bidding.

PURCHASING • All sales are final and there will be no exchange or refund on items except where specified. • Arrangements for dates for all trips and similar events are the sole responsibility of the purchaser. Unless specified, all certificates for trips expire on February 21, 2016, one year from the date of the Gala. Moreover, no refunds are permitted for canceled, lost or unused tickets and/or accommodations, or if the purchaser is unable to arrange a mutually agreeable date for the purchased trip or event. • Values set forth are estimates only and are not warranted by the Valley Catholic Gala or the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation (Hereinafter “Gala Chair/Official”) for tax purposes or for general value. All items are sold “As Is.” The Gala Chair/Official assumes no responsibility for the correctness of item description. • Due to local liquor control laws, restaurant certificates

do not include alcoholic beverages, unless otherwise stated. • Gift certificates not on display in baskets will be held at the check-out desk. They may be collected from retrieval when you check out. • Payment for winning bids at the Silent or Live Auction must be made by cash, check (payable to Valley Catholic Gala), or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover). Payment in full is mandatory no later than 10:30 p.m. the night of the auction. Items too large to be taken home the night of the auction may be picked up the following Tuesday between noon and 5 p.m. at the Gala Office at the rear of the SSMO Convent, unless other arrangements are made with the Gala Chair/Official. • Unless otherwise specified, all items and services purchased at the Gala will expire on February 21, 2016. • The Gala is run in accordance with the Oregon State law regarding auction sales. The specific statute applying to auctions can be found at Oregon Revised Statutes 72.3280.

SILENT AUCTION

• Bid raises must be in the minimum amounts specified on the bid sheet. If the minimum bid is not observed, the bid is void. The Gala Chair/Official will make the final determination of the successful bidder on any written auction item. If a subsequent bid is disqualified or otherwise stricken for any reason prior to the closing of bidding, the last, highest bid on the bid sheet will be deemed the successful bid. • Some Silent Auction items may have designated “guaranteed bid” amounts. A bidder may choose to bypass all competitive bidding by paying the specified guaranteed bid listed on the bottom of the bid sheet. To do so, the bidder writes his/her bid number and name on the line next the guaranteed bid price. An Gala Chair/Official will draw a line across the entire bid sheet to indicate that the item is no longer available for bidding. • Under no circumstances may a bid sheet be removed except by the Gala Chair/Official. • Announcements will be made prior to the closing. The closing bid certified by an Gala Chair/Official will constitute the winning bid. The Silent Auction will close at 6:50 p.m. At that time, all bidding is over and no more writing is allowed on bid sheets.

• All items in the Silent Auction have bid sheets on the table in front of them. Items are located on the tables around the room. Persons desiring to bid must do so by legibly writing their bid number, full name and amount of bid in the spaces provided.

65

GALA AUCTION RULES (continued) MINI-LIVE AUCTION • Grade Projects will be featured in a special portion of the evening called the Mini-Live. Grade Projects can be bid on during the Silent Auction beginning at 5 p.m. At 6:15 the Mini-Live Auction will begin. The silent bid sheets will be removed and used as a starting point for the auctioneer, who will begin the oral bidding process. All Grade Projects will be sold during the Mini-Live PRIOR to the Live Auction. • School grade projects are exclusive to the Gala. These projects are created solely for the auction. No projects may be requested, created, copied or sold after the Gala without consulting the Gala Official.

LIVE AUCTION • Live Auction bidding will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Live Auction items are described in the Gala catalog. • Under Oregon law regarding auctions, a sale of auction is complete when the auctioneer so announces by lowering the gavel, or in any other customary manner. Therefore, once the gavel falls, the purchase is complete and the auction item has been purchased by the bidder. All sales are final and there will be no exchange or refund on an item except where specified.

• To bid, the purchaser raises his/her bidder number high so it can be seen easily. It will be acknowledged by one of the spotters; then the purchaser may lower it until he/she wishes to bid again. Bidding order of Live Auction items is subject to change after the publication of Gala catalog. • No duplicate items may be offered in the Live Auction, unless authorized by the donor, in person or prior to bidding.

GOLDEN TICKET RAFFLE • Valley Catholic Golden Ticket raffle is held in strict accordance with Oregon state law and guidelines provided by the Oregon Department of Justice. Ticket purchasers must be at least 18 years old. • Golden Ticket Raffle: Guests may purchase Golden Ticket; no more than 100 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winning ticket will be drawn on stage just prior to the Live Auction. The winner will choose from all Live Auction packages. The method of payment toward the chosen package will appear as “Golden Ticket” in the payment section of the winner’s receipt. Once the winner has chosen the package and the Live Auction has begun, no changes will be allowed by the winner. Winner may forfeit the prize and donate the package back to the auction to be sold during the Live Auction. The signature of the winner of the Golden Ticket will be required.

PROXY BIDDING • Bids may be made in absentia via the proxy bid form provided by the Gala Office and available on the auction website. Proxy bids are applicable for Live, Mini Live and Silent Auction packages. Silent Auction items with guaranteed bids are exempt from Proxy bidding. Proxy bid sheets must be received in the Gala office no later than Thursday, February 19 at 5 p.m. Proxy Bidders will be represented by a Gala official during the bidding process. • Bidders may submit absentee bids for sign-up parties, but those bids will not be entered on the sign-up sheets until after the Silent Auction has closed and all bidders present at the Gala have had an opportunity to purchase spots.

WARRANTY • The Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer, Seller or Donor may not give any warranty, express or implied, as to the quality of the description of the property listed for sale in the announcement concerning the sale. In addition, the Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer, Seller or Donor is not liable for the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or for any faulty description thereof, in any advertisement, catalog or other medium employed for announcing the sale. Purchaser shall not be entitled to damages, recession or any other remedy on account of the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or the faulty description of the property.
