CLASS OF 1938 ALUMNA HOLDS TREASURED MEMORIES
S
he remembers it like it was yesterday. As an alumna from the class of 1938, Helen Riverman Mason holds her time on the Sister of St. Mary of Oregon campus close to her heart. The graduation photograph of the nine students in the St. Mary of the Valley Academy’s class of 1938 brings back memories. At 96 years old, Helen easily rattles off the names of each of her classmates. She fondly recalls the kind Sisters who served as teachers and outstanding role models in her young life. Helen remembers when her dad bought his first automobile in the mid 1930’s. On school days, he would load the car with students dressed in uniform—a navy jumper, tan blouse and red tie— carrying sack lunches for the drive from Tigard to Beaverton. Their day began with roll call, which took place in one of the larger classrooms in the Motherhouse. As a student, Helen enjoyed English class and excelled at typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. To assist with tuition, Helen swept the floor in the basement of the Motherhouse every day after school. Following graduation, Helen went to work as part of the National Youth Administration

(NYA) implemented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was a telephone operator for General Telephone until the rotary dial telephone replaced her job. She met her husband, Art, when she went to work as a bookkeeper at the appliance store he owned. She and Art were married for 27 years. Together, they raised his daughter and enjoyed traveling. For more than a quarter of a century, Helen has remembered her alma mater with gifts to the school’s Annual Fund. Today, she spends her time knitting dishcloths of every color that she gives to her nieces and nephews as Christmas gifts. She loves spending time in the kitchen and has baked many loaves of zucchini bread in her day. She considers herself fortunate to have a life full of pleasant memories and, above all, values her Catholic faith, which has given her strength and peace.
Family, like branches on a tree, grow in different directions…. yet our roots remain as one.

This year’s $1.9 million in fundraising was fortified by gifts from nearly 1,200 donors, numerous program grants and strategic estate gifts, benefiting the Sisters’ community outreach efforts, Maryville’s continuum of care and Valley Catholic’s educational program. We are grateful for all gifts, large and small. Nearly a century ago, the campus’ sequoias were planted as tiny seedlings. Today, these giant trees not only protect and beautify the campus, they signify the strength and intention of the mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and their sponsored ministries — much like your thoughtful gifts. Letter from President of the SSMO Ministries Corporation When one considers one’s roots, webs of interconnectedness, culture and nutrient-rich humus are tapped. As human beings, we recognize we are cosmic dust particles charged with God’s creative energy. Like humus, and with God’s help, we sustain one another and support one another in our efforts to access the vital requisites for growth. On the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus, rootedness allows us to dig deep into the humus of our reality and relish the great Providence of God….Roots of plants (flowers and produce), roots of family (long-held connections to Washington County, Oregon, and beyond), roots of long-lasting relationships (of the employee and benefactor variety!) nurture us. Thank you for being the ever important “humus” in our lives – nourishing our ministries, nourishing our souls and allowing us not only to remain viable but to THRIVE! REACHING UPWARD
T
hey are majestic. Just west of the corner of T.V. Highway and Murray Boulevard twenty two sequoia trees stand shoulder to shoulder protecting the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus. Their enormous trunks measure over 25 feet in circumference. They serve as a constant reminder to remain grounded, while reaching for possibilities and higher potential. The trees have a history dating back to 1932 when Fergis Cromient ordered sequoia seeds from Atlanta, Georgia. Amazed at the size of the seed, he remarked, “To my great surprise the seed was so small I had to use a magnifying glass to get a good look.” He planted the seeds and when the trees were about a foot tall they were gifted to the Sisters. The class of 1934 cared for the young trees by carrying buckets of water from the Motherhouse. The trees were transplanted to their current location in 1943 and were a mere three feet tall at that time. Sequoias are the world’s largest single-stem trees by volume. They sprout only from seed, contained in their cones, accomplishing nothing unless the soil conditions are right. They can grow to a towering 300 feet tall and live for hundreds of years. Their roots are unique, spreading outward along the surface of the soil, capturing as much moisture as possible. Their root system intertwines with the roots of other sequoias to gain support. Similarly, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon’s mission provides nourishing soil for growth to those on their campus, their work spreads out into the community, strengthening others.

STEP INTO THE GARDEN
G
ardening is rooted in the Sisters’ history. At one time, a large flower and vegetable garden occupied the land where Valley Catholic High School stands today. Wheat grew on the front lawn of the Motherhouse until 1960, when taxation rules impacted the seasonal harvest. Today, tucked behind the large arborvitae on the east side of the Motherhouse garden beds burst with color. Measuring 40 x 100 feet, the largest garden produces a dozen varieties of flowers and just as many different vegetables. Sister Ruth Etzel and Sister Theresa Lan Nguyen believe that “gardening is good for the soul.” Donned in sun hats and garden gloves, the Sisters find delight in tending the campus gardens. During the summer they spend 25 hours a week weeding, cultivating, watering and pruning. They find joy in every minute! Their knowledge was handed down by the Sisters who came before them and they have learned that gardening requires patient labor and attention.
Letter from SSMO Superior General This year’s theme for the Annual Report “Deeply Rooted” brought to mind the sense I experienced earlier this year while listening to the students’ speeches at Valley Catholic High School’s Commencement. Whether the students were here four years for high school or for all the years of their education, they became undeniably connected to their friends and their teachers. They left with a sense that they will always belong here and that faith, hope and charity will help them deal with reality and keep them close to God. Seeing and hearing them reminded me of how important it is to be deeply rooted with those who love and support us – our amazing donors and God. Thank you for your generous support. Our hearts are filled with gratitude. We pray for you daily. Blessings,
Sr. Ruth arranges cut flowers from the garden in vases providing splashes of color to the Chapel and brightening rooms and offices in the Motherhouse. On Monday mornings, employees find small vases of fresh flowers on their desks, lovingly prepared by Sr. Ruth. The garden is a sanctuary where senses come alive: • Hear nature’s call in the birds’ songs • Smell the mystical perfume that fills the air • See the brilliant colors of blossoms and plants • Taste the flavor of fresh fruit and vegetables • Feel at peace in the serenity of a gentle breeze

VCS PRESIDENTS: A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
D
uring his tenure as VCS President from 2010-2017, Bob Weber was tasked with sustaining the more than 130 years of traditions established by the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, while leading the charge for a stronger, unified school community that shares their vision of excellence. Generations of students will benefit from of the growth experienced during his leadership: • High School Science Building - 2016 • Kelly Auditorium Renovation - 2015 • Athletic Facilities Improvements 2014-2015 • K-8 School Dedication - 2011

n July 2017, John Matcovich stepped boldly into the position of Valley Catholic School President. President Matcovich was drawn to the campus by the warmth of the Sisters and their longstanding successes and excellence in education. His role is to “ensure that the spirit and mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon is alive in every endeavor that takes place on campus. Valley Catholic is a community that values every student, giving each individual the opportunity to grow in a supportive environment
Bob considered it a privilege to work with everyone on campus to carry out the Sisters mission. Quick with a smile and handshake, he was frequently seen enjoying drama productions and concerts with his family, cheering on the Valiants from the sidelines, and handing out diplomas at Commencement. In January 2017, Bob announced that he had accepted the position as President of Blanchet Catholic School in Salem, Oregon. Upon his departure, Bob shared this sentiment, “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a positive part of this community. I will treasure the people and experience for the rest of my life.”

Sixteen of those years were dedicated to students and families as principal at St. Clare and St. Ignatius Schools. Most recently, he provided leadership as the Associate

JOY LIVES HERE: A QUEEN’S CORONATION
S
ince 1980, Maryville has crowned a resident to preside as their very own Rose Queen during Portland’s Rose Festival season. It is an occasion that engages residents and staff, and it creates excitment throughout the residence. The Rose Court selection begins when longterm care staff select a resident to represent each unit. After each unit has nominated a princess all of the staff, families, and volunteers cast their ballots and elect a winner. Each princess arrives in fashion for the announcement of the winner. Wheel chairs are decorated with roses and ribbons. Their smiles tell their stories, and it is obvious their hearts are overflowing with joy. The princesses are often dressed in new outfits and have had their hair and makeup done by Maryville’s in-house beautician. Amid cheers from other residents, staff, volunteers and family members, a crown is placed on the queen’s head! Maryville’s Rose Queen’s duties continue after the coronation, as former and present princesses represent Maryville in the Beaverton Celebration Parade. They receive well-wishes, waves and smiles along the parade route. In many ways, the Rose Court custom is a fitting tradition for the residential community. The courtyards at Maryville are filled with roses of every color. Roses, especially red ones, are often associated with love. Likewise, Maryville offers service with love, providing outstanding care for the community since 1963.
