Letter from the Executive Director What an outstanding year it has been for the SSMO Campus community! I am delighted to share the SSMO Foundation’s 2014-2015 Annual Report for gifts received through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. I hope it fills you with the same energy and excitement we feel promoting the SSMO-sponsored ministries of outreach, healthcare, and education. As a community, we received funds from a record number of donors, many of whom gave for the first time ever. We celebrated the addition of several new projects on campus that support our residents, students, faculty, and staff in living out the mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. Among those, the Maryville Transitional Care Unit and the Valley Catholic athletic facilities have profoundly impacted people’s lives and helped continue our tradition of excellence.

None of these endeavors would happen without the wholehearted leadership of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, the Boards of Directors, our generous families, friends, faculty, alumni, and the hundreds of volunteers on whom we so faithfully depend. Your gifts matter: They inspire others to give and create powerful momentum for positive change. Thank you for generously supporting the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, Maryville, and Valley Catholic School. Your big hearts make our work possible. With gratitude,

Letter from the SSMO Superior General The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon are grateful to our donors for their ongoing generosity. Your contributions to our livelihood come in many ways: in-kind gifts of fruits, vegetables, and useful items; financial gifts; acts of kindness and prayers.

In addition, because we believe that religious life continues to have a role in the Church and in the lives of God’s People, we accepted one new member into the Community and invited another Sister to serve full time as our vocation director.

Through your generosity our supported ministries are flourishing. Last year we focused on two outreach programs, Soup’s On and ESOL (English for Students of Other Languages). The growth at Valley Catholic School and Maryville continue to be a blessing.

In this special year of Consecrated Life called for by Pope Francis, we have eagerly shared our lives and acknowledged our faith, hope, and love of God who has led us to become the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.

At the General Chapter meeting this summer the Sisters elected leadership and outlined goals for the next five years. As a result, the Sisters will put time and energy into fulfilling these mandates: enliven our commitment to live our vowed life, seek ways to identify with and serve the marginalized, and enhance our efforts to contribute to the sustainability of the earth.

Much of what we do is possible because of your love and support. We are bound to you in prayer.

Letter from the President of the SSMO Ministries Corporation Changing times, lasting values! Clearly, these sentiments are alive and well on the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Campus. As President of the SSMO Ministries Corporation, I enjoy the unique perspective of viewing all entities ministering together — with synergy, passion, compassion, and joy. In the last year, Valley Catholic School, Maryville and the SSMO Foundation have all experienced the excitement of “changing times.” New buildings, new programs, new partnerships. The positivity on campus is palpable. We have a new field, a new field house, new grandstands, a new transitional care unit, a new therapy courtyard, and new legacy gifts from grateful families. The Spirit is blowing about with hurricane force winds that exuberantly bring to life changes that will make a huge impact on so many — now and into the future.

8

Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation

Yet, the core values that we hold dear are equally alive and well. Every day, Sisters, staff, students, residents, families, and volunteers uphold the values that have stood the test of time — since the Sisters’ founding in 1886: • Live Valiantly. • Strive for Excellence. • Honor the Unique Gifts of Each Person. • Celebrate God and Life. God be praised! Gratitude be given! Lives be touched, changed, valued — forever!

Commitment matters

“Commitment not only matters on this campus, it is part of the lifeblood that sustains us! Fidelity, dedication, and loyalty — one can’t give much more than that — to God, to family, to community, to ministry!” Sr. Adele Marie Altenhofen, SSMO, President, SSMO Ministries Corporation Annual Report 2014 – 2015

Letter from the President of Maryville Maryville sits on the southwest corner of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus, serving the healthcare needs of the local community. Maryville provides skilled nursing, long-term care, and memory care. In the past year, a new south wing was built which includes a 16-bed transitional care unit and a therapy courtyard. The therapy courtyard is making such a difference in rehabilitation, perhaps the best way to describe this is to share some comments received from our staff: Today my patient watered flowers in the therapy courtyard today. It was good functional reach. While in the garden the patient stood longer than previous days as she reminisced about her younger years when she spent time gardening.

Maryville is home to residents, but it is much more than that: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Maryville bustles with life: meal times have been expanded and room service is now available thanks in part to a new oven, staff serve meals in two remodeled dining rooms; Activity Directors offer arts and crafts, music, and bingo, with off-sight excursions to local attractions offered regularly; Nurse practitioners, physicians, and hospitalists make calls on residents weekly; Families of residents visit loved ones, often making Maryville their second home. Much of this is made possible because of you! Your support comes to us in numerous ways — all of which we are grateful.

Maryville 2014-2015 Board of Directors Bill Johnson, Chair Nickey Kemp, Vice Chair Sr. Catherine Hertel, SSMO ’58, Secretary Dave Poppe, Treasurer Bret Cope Kelly Fox ’86 Jerry Hunter Andy Kyler Billi Odegaard Sr. Maggie Pastro, SP Harper Pearse Kathleen Parry, President, ex officio

Kathleen Parry Yesterday my patient practiced navigating the ramp in the therapy courtyard. He is determined to return home to his houseboat where a ramp from the bank to the dock is the only way to get to his front door. I love the therapy courtyard!

Letter from the President of Valley Catholic School As parents, we hope that with the help of others, including family, mentors, teachers, and coaches, we can raise confident, thoughtful, and aware children. At Valley Catholic, dedicated faculty and staff support students to help gain confidence, think critically, become aware of the world around them and reach their individual potential. Our facilities are part and parcel to achieving those goals, and we continue to improve physical learning environments for students of all ages. In 2014 the high school confidently entered 4A athletic classification and began competing with larger school. Many of these competitions took place on the new turf field and were viewed from the grandstand, part of the school’s capital improvements to allow yearround multisport usage. The smooth transition in OSAA classification from 3A to 4A was validated when the high school earned the prestigious Oregonian Cup for the fourth consecutive year. The Oregonian Cup is based on excellence in academics, activities, athletics, and sportsmanship and confirms the commitment to excellence from our entire school community.

12

Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation

We endeavor to ensure that the school has the means and the facilities to attract and maintain faculty and staff, sustain healthy enrollment levels, and continue educating students according to our core values of living valiantly, striving for excellence, honoring the unique gifts of each person, and celebrating God and life.

Valley Catholic School 2014-2015 Board of Directors

Valley Catholic is fortunate to have engaged supporters like you whose generosity makes a difference in the life of our faculty and staff, and students. Thank you for supporting Valley Catholic through the Annual Fund, GAP gifts, the Gala, and capital projects.

Philanthropy matters Philanthropy is our individual response to human needs; an opportunity to give is an opportunity to be involved. Philanthropy is nurturing, caring, and serving. By being a philanthropist, we assist with community growth. By giving to charitable and philanthropic organizations, we exercise our support for the goals, the people and the purposes in which we believe. Philanthropy allows us to shape the future in which we want to live.

Heart Matters Scarlett has been at Valley Catholic since age 4 when she enrolled at the Early Learning School. She is currently a Kindergarten student in Mrs. Williamson’s class where she sits at the green rhombus table. Scarlett enjoys sharing stories about her day at the dinner table. She recounts spending time visiting friends at Maryville, planting gardens, singing songs, and making friends. Her loving spirit is nurtured every day. Scarlett learned about giving at a young age. Each time she receives a new toy, she goes through the process

of deciding what item in her toy box to donate to children less fortunate. When it comes to earning an allowance, Scarlett’s parents encourage her to save for the future, give to others, and spend a little now. When Scarlett questioned the small envelope tucked in the seam of the recent Spirit magazine, her parents explained that the Sisters and the school rely on donations to continue their sponsored ministries. Scarlett immediately opened her piggy bank and pulled out two crisp one-dollar bills. She proudly tucked the money in the envelope, wrote her name in the return address, placed the stamp, and firmly reminded her mom to mail it the next day. Parents, Shawn and Megan were overjoyed to see their daughter contribute to the community that embraces her, a place where she is flourishing. Good things really do come in small packages!

Growth matters Athletic Facilities

Maryville Transitional Care South Unit Maryville Therapy Courtyard

The face of Valley Catholic changed forever with the completion of the Athletic Facilities project. A turf field, grandstand, and field house with a locker room, coaches’ offices, and concessions gave student athletes and coaches a place to compete valiantly.

A 16-bed Transitional Care Unit at Maryville was dedicated June 4, 2015. The new unit serves individuals who are rehabilitating after surgeries and injuries.

Maintenance Building

The 13,000 square foot two-story science building will provide five laboratory classrooms, enabling faculty to prepare high school students for opportunities in the world of science. Funding for the $5.5 million dollar project is currently being acquired. The project is slated to be completed in September of 2016.

The renovation of the Kelly Auditorium, which hosts numerous performances for the entire campus, is slated to be completed in November 2015. The project includes new lighting, sound system, seats, carpet, curtain, and fresh paint.

A new 7,030 square foot building housing maintenance offices, wood shop, workstations, and equipment/supply storage is being constructed behind the Convent.
