Director’s Note
Like many of you in the audience, I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz once a year, when it was broadcast on TV around Thanksgiving. That led me as a child reading all of L. Frank Baum’s adventures in Oz, and immersing myself in that wonderful fantasy world. I never imagined, though, that I’d be directing it as my 40th production at Valley Catholic. However, the opportunity presented itself as I looked at our students and thought it would be a perfect fit.
As it turns out, it has been. This is the largest cast of a show since 2019, and I’m so grateful that we not only have dedicated high school students, but a delightful group of 14 middle schoolers who have joined the ensemble. With 42 students on cast and crew, this production has come together in a truly wonderful way-- students working together on Saturdays to build the set, working hard in and outside rehearsals, and making up lost time after a week of ice.
I’d like to thank our production team, and the parents of the cast and crew who have dedicated hours to this production. Kelliann Wright and Brittney Clark, I cannot make these musicals come together without your energy and coaching on vocals and choreography-- especially this year, when my mobility was compromised! Matt and Tracey Curfman, thank you for joining us again to design and execute more magical scenery for Oz! Karin Presnell and Kris Arbaugh, the costumes for the show look amazing, and I’m constantly in awe of your resourcefulness and creativity. Esther McFaden, your technical know-how has brought the magical elements of the production to life! And to all the other parents who have given so much time and talent in making lobby decorations, designing the poster and program, working on the sets, and everything else involved-- I’m as always truly grateful and humbled by your generosity of spirit, and all you do for our kids.
Finally, a huge ‘thank you’ to the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon. Because of you, we are able to continue to thrive as an Arts community at Valley Catholic. We are all truly blessed! I’m so excited that you’re all here tonight to join us in telling this wonderful story of friendship, courage, and heart, reminding us that home is surrounded by those who love us, and there’s no place like home.
Dearest Anoosheh,
Time goes by too fast. It feels like 2007 was just a moment ago. We cannot be more proud of the person you are becoming.

To our Dearest Kaylee-bug,
It’s hard to believe that your time behind the VC curtain is coming to a close. You were thrown into one of your biggest roles in life, Stage Manager, while only a Sophomore, but it was a part you’ve been playing since a kid. As you step back and pass the torch to the next generation this spring, we see you rolling into your future. Just know your family always has your back… quite literally since we let you tattoo the family motto onto it!
Seniors
Dear Cameron and Kaylee,
Your dedication to drama over these many years have provided an invaluable example to your classmates, and to the next generation. Cam, it seems like just yesterday that you entered the auditorium as a sixth grader, shyly wanting to participate in our production of Much Ado About Nothing. Seven years and 14 productions later, here you are in your final Valley show. You’ve grown so much, this year in particular. Well done, and congratulations.
Kaylee, you joined our department in the most unusual of circumstances, and ran sound for a Zoom show from home. You then became our stalwart stage manager, and our productions for the past few years have been as strong as they’ve been because of your tireless work. Enjoy your last experience as a VC techie-- you’re leaving a legacy as the next group of tech crew learns from your expertise.
I’m so proud of you both, and excited to see where you go from here. Keep in touch, because never forget that you have a home at Valley, and there’s no place like it.
~Paterson
Cameron, You’ve always had a flair for the dramatic.
As a fearless 6th grader you barrel rolled out of your first audition and never stopped. It’s been an amazing ride watching you grow and mature. Your stage presence, enunciation and projection will serve you well in all of your scientific pursuits. We love you so much and are so very proud of you!
Love, Mama and Papa
Theatre Etiquette Reminders:
RULES OF THEATRE ETIQUETTE…so everyone can enjoy the show!
1. Turn your phone and other devices off. Anything that makes noise or creates light during the performance is distracting to the actors and other audience members. Please leave the auditorium if you have to use your phone.
2. Any recording or taking photography during the performance is strictly prohibited.
3. Be sure to take out anything with a noisy wrapper before the performance (cough drops, candies, etc.). Again, this is a distraction to the actors and your fellow audience members.
4. Please refrain from talking during the performance. We can hear you!!
5. Please wait until intermission to use the restrooms. If it’s an emergency, please exit the auditorium as quietly as possible, and return to your seat at a scene break.
6. Show your appreciation! Applause is always welcome after a scene, act, and especially at the end of the show.
7. While children are welcome to the performance, please use your discretion. If you know your little one will not be able to sit through the performance without running around or crying, please do not bring them to the show.
8. Cast members can be met in the lobby after the show. Therefore, please do not go backstage during the performance or intermission.
9. Use your common sense…if a behavior would be annoying to you during a show, don’t do it! Please show the same respect for the Actors.
10. ENJOY THE SHOW!!
Dearest Zoya, We are so proud of you. You work hard at whatever you decide to do.
Your heart of gold keeps our buckets full and your razor sharp wit makes us laugh everyday.
Much love, Amme and Abu
Leiya,
If I were king of the foreeeeest! What a great character choice for you! The cowardly lion is literally puuuurfect. I mean if you didn’t already have the lions mane with your head full of hair, you definitely have the courage. When we found out that you had landed this role, your dad and I were beyond excited and so proud of you! You have come such a long way with theatre and it has been truly inspiring and emotional watching you grow within yourself through all of your characters.
To the theatre department: Thank you all for supporting Leiya. Theatre has allowed our cub [lol] to open up, grow more confidence and be her true self. Gaining so many beautiful friendships and people she can count on through her journey.
We are so proud of you Lei for putting in so much effort into the things that you love. Theatre is your heart. Theatre has shown you that you have always had the courage. Guess you and the cowardly lion have more in common than you thought! Not to mention your strong connection to the Wizard of Oz!!! Look at you!!!
We love you Leiya! Break a leg! - Love, Mama #2, Dad, Zander & Grandma
Dear Cam,
We just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing friend to all of us. Thank you for the backstage giggles, leading us through theater, and being a supportive friend to us. You're so talented and we love to be around you whether it's sitting together at lunch or onstage performing with you, we love you. Now go off to college and be free!
