DECEMBER IS DISEASE PREVENTION & TREATMENT MONTH Rotary's top priority is the eradication of polio, but Rotarians take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease. They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. They also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments, and partners to reach the one in six people in the world who can't afford to pay for health care. Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms, from supporting studies to helping immunize people to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure. The world relies on Rotary to tackle these global challenges, and to set an example for others to follow. JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service. Vocational Service calls every Rotarian to: 1. Aspire to high ethical standards in their occupation; 2. Recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and; 3. Contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society. During January, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Source: http://www.rotary5790.org/SitePage/vocational-service#sthash.6jjke2yx.dpuf

PROFILE: DISTRICT 7020 BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Interact District 7020 is made up of 10 beautiful countries & territories. This month we feature the beautiful islands of The Britiah Virgin Islands.

Christopher Columbus On his second voyage to the Americas in 1493, Christopher Columbus spotted these beautiful islands and named them "Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Vírgenes" (Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins). Later shortened to Las Vírgenes (The Virgins), the Spanish Empire claimed the islands in the early 16th century, but never actually settled them. In 1648, the Dutch established a permanent settlement on the island of Tortola. Seeing an opportunity, the stronger English navy captured Tortola from the Dutch in 1672, and then annexed INTERACTION| 8 Anegada and Virgin Gorda in 1680.

PROFILE:Â DISTRICT 7020 BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS During this same period of time, while continually trying to expand its influence into the Caribbean, the Danish West India Company built settlements on nearby Saint Thomas, then on Saint John in 1694; Denmark later purchased Saint Croix from France in 1733.

During World War I, the United States, worried that the Germans could possibly use the islands as a submarine base, purchased Saint Thomas, Saint John, Saint Croix from Denmark, renaming them the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Britain retained control of these islands, and since the mid-1960s, they've moved away from the longestablished agriculture-based economy towards financial services and tourism. Today the British Virgin Islands remain under the control of the British Government, but are administered by a hands-on Governor appointed by the Queen of England. Steeped in the history of the British Navy, the islands are ringed by shipwrecks; the most famous of these - The RMS Rhone - is now a national marine park, and a favorite scuba diving point. Ferry service connects the outer islands.

LET'S GET SOCIAL Social Media Etiquette Tips Grammar and Communication There are appropriate shortcuts for social media, but don’t go overboard. Otherwise, no one will be able to understand you, and they may think you’re lazy and ignorant. Know what @means: @ is a sign that means you’re responding to or directly addressing a particular user or message. On some sites, it even tags that person. Use the word, not the number: Substituting "2" for "to" looks like you’re in junior high. Social media is a step up from texting: Unless you’re updating all your messages on a mobile device, remember that social media is a step up from texting. If you’re typing on a keyboard, you can type out the whole word. Don’t make stupid mistakes: You’re not receiving an official grade from your tweets and updates, but you are being judged on your grammar mistakes. Edit your work: Take a few seconds to review your messages so that you can correct any mistakes. Avoid exclamation points: They’re warranted sometimes, but punctuation marks are annoying to read and make your writing look juvenile. Always be honest and transparent: With so many distractions going on online, keep your messages short, clear and truthful. Know which rules you can break: Regular abbreviations and certain punctuation marks — like ellipses — can be used more freely on social media sites.
