Old Friends. Bookends. Welcome from the Music Director When the Singapore Symphony Orchestra requested a special year of concerts for 2016/17 because it would be my 20th concert season with them, it brought a smile to my face. My friendship with the SSO as Music Director began on 10 January 1997, and looking back at how far we have come, I feel honoured to be a part of this amazing SSO family. There is no better way to celebrate a journey than by welcoming back friends old and new – Charles Dutoit, Andrew Litton, Robert Spano, Yu Long, Masaaki Suzuki, Gil Shaham, Wang Jian, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Renaud Capuçon, and Kam Ning. We are also thrilled that two of classical music’s superstars, Yo-Yo Ma and Gustavo Dudamel, will share the stage with our orchestra. We also welcome back our dearest friend Okko Kamu for two concerts. Okko will step down as our Principal Guest Conductor after more than 20 years. He has introduced some wonderful repertoire to us, especially the music of Sibelius, and is well-loved by our musicians. With our final concert of the season featuring Crusell’s Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat, we bid farewell to Zhang Jin Min, our Principal Bassoon of 30 years who has played a key role in the SSO’s development. This season, we have chosen an exciting line-up of works from the sensuous to the sensational, from familiar favourites from the past to new music from more modern times. Among the highlights are a full concert of Broadway music, Carnival of the Animals and Harry Potter music especially for our young friends, and the BBC’s Frozen Planet in Concert for film buffs. We are also proud to perform Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie for the first time since 1994, as well as Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 in F minor with the Singapore Symphony Chorus. A major theme pays tribute to the world of books and the stories between their covers. We are excited to present Shakespeare400, where we pay tribute to the legacy of William Shakespeare through the gorgeous music inspired by his stories, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet. We are also exploring different ways composers reflect on the love and tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Aside from Shakespeare, immerse yourself in fables about fantastic firebirds, puppets who come to life, and fairy princesses inside three oranges. The SSO brings these stories to life in Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Petrushka, and Prokofiev’s The Love of Three Oranges. Come join me and our wonderful musicians as we celebrate our friendship this season.

‘Who would suppose an orchestra in Asia could remind one of Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia?’ FANFARE

Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role in educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996. Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In September 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph. In 2010 the SSO’s 6-city tour of London and Germany, which included a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie, garnered rave reviews from The Times and Sueddeutsche Zeitung. Notable SSO releases under BIS include a Rachmaninov series, a Debussy disc, Seascapes featuring sea-themed music by Debussy, Frank Bridge, Glazunov and Zhou Long, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham.

Lan Shui is renowned for his abilities as an orchestral builder and for his passion in commissioning, premiering and recording new works by leading Asian composers. As Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1997, American Record Review noted that Shui has “turned a good regional orchestra into a world-class ensemble that plays its heart out at every concert”. Together they have made several acclaimed tours to Europe, Asia and the United States and appeared for the first time at the BBC Proms in September 2014. Lan Shui held the position of Chief Conductor of the Copenhagen Phil from 2007 to 2016, and from 2017 he will be their Conductor Laureate. He recently concluded a fouryear period as Artistic Advisor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. As a guest conductor, Shui has worked with many orchestras. In the United States he has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Baltimore and Detroit symphony orchestras. In Europe he has performed with Deutsches SymphonieOrchester Berlin, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, RadioSinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Gothenburg Symphony, Tampere Philharmonic and Orchestre National de Lille. In Asia he has conducted the Hong Kong, Malaysian and Japan Philharmonic orchestras and maintains a close relationship with the China Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony. Since 1998 Shui has recorded over 20 CDs for BIS – including a Rachmaninov series, a Seascapes disc and the first-ever complete cycle of Tcherepnin’s symphonies with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra – and also music by Arnold and Hindemith with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, which has received two Grammy nominations. Lan Shui is the recipient of several international awards from the Beijing Arts Festival and the New York Tcherepnin Society, the 37th Besançon Conductors’ Competition in France and Boston University (Distinguished Alumni Award) as well as the Cultural Medallion Singapore’s highest accolade in the arts. Born in Hangzhou, China, Shui studied composition at the Shanghai Conservatory and graduated from The Beijing Central Conservatory. He continued his graduate studies at Boston University while at the same time working closely with Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He has worked together with David Zinman as Conducting Affiliate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, as Associate Conductor to Neeme Järvi at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and with Kurt Masur at the New York Philharmonic and Pierre Boulez at The Cleveland Orchestra. 02

In celebration of Music Director Lan Shui’s 20th SSO season in 2016/17, we take a walk down memory lane, revisiting his inaugural concert of January 1997, as well as his very first appearances with the SSO as guest conductor.

‘That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.’ Lan Shui brings the world’s most famous love story to life through scenes from the Prokofiev’s captivating Romeo and Juliet. Immerse yourself in the deeply reflective First Piano Concerto, which expresses Chopin’s love for his native Poland – featuring no less than the dazzling winner of the 2010 Chopin Competition, Yulianna Avdeeva.

Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers have inspired some of the most gorgeous music we know. Yan Pascal Tortelier leads the SSO in scenes from Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet, which captures the essence of the fabled tale of the Montagues and Capulets in fair Verona. Dmitri Alexeev returns with the ever-popular Second Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov, whose adagio theme inspired the pop ballad All By Myself.

HAMLET • THE YEAR 1917 ‘This above all: to thine own self be true’. An avid reader and theatregoer, Tchaikovsky looked to Shakespeare thrice for his symphonic poems – Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest and Hamlet – and the vindictive role of Hamlet lends itself well to musical representation. This Russian programme sees old friend Nikolai Demidenko take on the lyrical and virtuosic Third Piano Concerto by Prokofiev. Homegrown conductor Darrell Ang closes the concert with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12, a passionate portrait of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

Tchaikovsky’s Shakespearean dreams took flight with Romeo and Juliet, the first and most popular of his three orchestral fantasies inspired by the Bard. Spanish pianist Javier Perianes has earned glowing praise for his 2015 album of the Grieg Piano Concerto, a perennial favourite heard on Adrian Lyne’s film Lolita. Music from yet another great Nordic composer, Sibelius, closes the evening. Of the Third Symphony Sibelius described its restless finale as a “crystallization of thought from chaos”.

But first, Lan Shui brings you a heartfelt rendition of Death and Transfiguration, and the intense Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto featuring rising violinist Sayaka Shoji.

Expect some of the most sublime and spiritually uplifting music with Anton Bruckner’s magnificent Mass No. 3 in F minor, in this sensational performance directed by Lim Yau. YO-YO MA & THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE Prepare to be astounded as the SSO brings you two gala programmes featuring superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Silk Road Ensemble! On November 11, Yo-Yo Ma brings tenderness and exuberance to Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, and Lan Shui will also conduct soloist Kayhan Kalhor’s Silent City with members of the Silk Road Ensemble.

On November 12, the Silk Road Ensemble performs with their artistic director Yo-Yo Ma, who partners Wu Tong for Zhao Lin’s Duo, a double concerto for cello and sheng, a traditional Chinese woodwind instrument comprised of 17 bamboo pipes, and the first half includes Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky’s Sacred Signs Suite, which draws parallels between Russian instrumental traditions and seemingly diverse instruments such as sheng, pipa and kamancheh. More than 200 years after its premiere, Beethoven’s Fifth – the world’s most famous symphony – still has the power to shock us. It is paired here with the grand Leonore Overture No. 3 and the Piano Concerto No. 4, a piece hailed as one of Beethoven’s most original works.

Hear the flute sing and leap in the magical Flute Concerto by Jacques Ibert, featuring SSO Principal Flautist Jin Ta. Yu Long closes a brilliant evening with ‘a true Soviet masterpiece’, Shostakovich’s Fifth.

A puppet comes to life and falls in love with a ballerina in Stravinsky’s Petrushka, a colourful masterpiece filled with gorgeous Russian folk melodies. Expect grandiose and wild passion as Nikolai Lugansky returns to play Brahms’ First Piano Concerto.

Olivier Messiaen wrote of his epic Turangalîlasymphonie: ‘It is a love song, a hymn to joy; love that is fatal, irresistible, transcending everything, suppressing everything outside; joy that is superhuman, overwhelming, blinding, unlimited.” Andreas Haefliger and Cynthia Millar join Lan Shui, the SSO and combined forces for this radiant 75-minute symphony of 10 movements.

Gustav Mahler’s daring Symphony No. 1 is an exceptional work that effortlessly transits between tranquility to grandeur within an hour of music. Setting the scene to Titan is Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, known as one of the greatest, and the strangest, of the genre.

Singapore Symphony Chorus Lim Yau, Choral Director The Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) was initiated in 1980 under the direction of Choo Hoey, then Music Director of the SSO, giving its first performance on 13 June 1980 - Brahms’ German Requiem. In 1981, Lim Yau was appointed Chorus Master. Under his guidance, the SSC established itself as one of the finest choirs in the region and one of the few symphony choruses in Southeast Asia. The chorus has worked with renowned conductors such as Peter Erdei, Eric Ericsson, John Nelson, Claus Peter Flor, Okko Kamu as well as SSO’s own Lan Shui. They have amassed a wide repertoire over the years, performing such works as Orff’s Carmina Burana, Rachmaninov’s The Bells, Tippett’s A Child of Our Time, Macmillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, Kodály’s Missa Brevis, Britten’s War Requiem, and baroque classic Bach’s St John Passion, amongst many others.

The Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir (SSCC) celebrates 10 wonderful years of singing in 2016. Since its debut performance in 2007, the SSCC has given many successful concerts, including appearances with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in its ever-popular Christmas Concerts and in the great choral masterpieces such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mahler’s Third Symphony, Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Britten’s War Requiem. Under the direction of choirmaster Wong Lai Foon and assistant choirmaster Darius Lim, the SSCC provides a nurturing environment for young singers aged between 9 and 16 years, allowing them to explore their love of music while enriching them with a comprehensive initiation into the art of classical singing.

In June 2015, the choir made their first trip overseas, collaborating with the Maîtrise de Radio France in Paris. They performed Berlioz’s Te Deum at the Philharmonie de Paris as part of the Singapour en France – le Festival. The choir was also featured in MediaCorp’s SG50: The Gift of Song - These Are The Days.

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) occupies a special place in Singapore’s music community having produced a strong alumni contributing significantly to both seeding the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and other community orchestras in Singapore as well as teaching the next generation of budding musicians.

The SNYO is made up of over 180 talented young musicians representing more than 60 schools across Singapore. Under its talent development programme, selected members receive individual tutoring from professional musicians including SSO musicians.

Recognised by the Ministry of Education as a National Project of Excellence, entry into the SNYO is by a rigorous audition process. Members in mainstream secondary schools with sustained involvement in the SNYO will have their participation in the orchestra recognised in lieu of a school-based Co-Curricular Activity (CCA).
