MUSIC DIREC TOR LAN SHU I 01

WELCOME FROM THE CEO A Special 40th Anniversary Season

The 2018/19 season is an exceptional one for us. Not only does its second half mark the 40th year of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra – a celebration that we plan to bring to audiences beyond concert hall doors, it also coincides with Singapore’s commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Sir Stamford Raffles’ landing in 1819. The two milestone anniversaries offer us and our audiences a chance to look back on history, and to reflect on the road ahead.

Looking back: SSO 40th Anniversary Our 40th Anniversary season kicks off with performances across Singapore with our first-ever ‘SSO In Your Community’ concerts. We bring back our ‘Familiar Favourites’ series – in a fresh format to meet our audience’s changing taste in classical offerings. In our 40th Anniversary Concert, the audience can re-experience the repertoire from our very first concert in 1979. We also walk down memory lane in concerts led by SSO founding Music Director and Emeritus Conductor Choo Hoey, and by former Principal Tuba Jacomo Bairos. As your orchestra, we stage our very first National Day Concert this season. We also celebrate our Singaporean composers, including Leong Yoon Pin, Phoon Yew Tien, Kelly Tang, Robert Casteels and Syafiqah 'Adha Mohd Sallehin. There is something for all age groups in our Pops concerts, one featuring TV themes from the 80s and another showcasing video game classics.

In a series of farewell concerts marked Lan Shui & the SSO, we honour our Music Director and showcase highlights from our 22-year journey together. These include audience-favourite Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Beethoven symphonies, our landmark recording of Debussy’s La Mer and the premiering of contemporary works. World-renowned Mahler singers Miah Persson and Anna Larsson join us in a special double-night performance of Mahler’s Second – ‘Resurrection’. In recognition of the bicentenary of Singapore’s founding, we shine a light on The Age of Discovery that led to European exploration and drove Singapore’s modernisation. There is no concert hall more iconic of this era than the VCH, where we will perform a series of three concerts in February and March 2019 featuring composers from the period, including Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. We close our classical music season joined by the Singapore Symphony Chorus, with Masaaki Suzuki conducting Missa Solemnis, a work Beethoven began writing – incidentally, in 1819.

Looking ahead: Our dreams for Singapore Reflecting on the road ahead, we have three dreams for Singapore. One relates to embracing a strong cultural identity. Who Are We? presents composers who approached national identity in different ways, including Singaporeans Leong Yoon Pin and Kelly Tang, as well as Borodin, Sibelius, Lutosławski and Ravel. The youth

orchestra joins the SSO in a first-time side-by-side performance of Russian folk-inspired repertoire. The second dream is of becoming a creative global city. The vibrant flow of ideas and creativity in Creative Vienna can be heard in works by great composers who were linked to and sometimes interacted in Vienna, such as Brahms, Zemlinsky, and Webern. The third dream is about classical music flourishing in our modern times. Here we present our new Red Balloon series, featuring all-modern repertoire by Zappa, Bates, Reich and other contemporary composers. Since SSO’s inaugural concert on 24 January 1979 – held at the Singapore Conference Hall with a live radio broadcast -- the orchestra has grown in-step with the classical music landscape in Singapore. Such a special season is impossible without generous supporters and enthusiastic audiences. Here’s to 40 years of great music, and many more.

OUR STORY Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings.

Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Festival. This successful five-city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. Notable SSO releases under BIS include a Rachmaninov series, a Debussy disc, Seascapes featuring seathemed music by Debussy, Frank Bridge, Glazunov and Zhou Long, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Jarvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Diana Damrau, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham.

OUR STORY

The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians

and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996.

“LAN SHUI IS THE MASTER OF MOVEMENT, DETAIL, AND MUSICAL INTEGRITY” American Record Guide

MUSIC DIRECTOR Lan Shui is renowned for his abilities as an orchestral builder and for his passion in commissioning, premiering and recording new works by leading Asian composers. As Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1997, American Record Review noted that Shui has “turned a good regional orchestra into a world-class ensemble that plays its heart out at every concert”. Together they have made several acclaimed tours to Europe, Asia and the United States and appeared for the first time at the BBC Proms in September 2014. Lan Shui held the position of Chief Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic from 2007 to 2016, and has been their Conductor Laureate since 2017. He recently concluded a four-year period as Artistic Advisor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. As a guest conductor, Shui has worked with many orchestras. In the United States he has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco, Baltimore and Detroit symphony orchestras. In Europe he has performed with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Gothenburg Symphony, Tampere Philharmonic and Orchestre National de Lille. In Asia he has conducted the Hong Kong, Malaysian and Japan Philharmonic orchestras and maintains a close relationship with the China Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony.

Since 1998 Shui has recorded over 20 CDs for BIS – including a Rachmaninov series, a Seascapes disc and the first-ever complete cycle of Tcherepnin’s symphonies with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra – and also music by Arnold and Hindemith with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, which has received two Grammy nominations. Lan Shui is the recipient of several international awards from the Beijing Arts Festival and the New York Tcherepnin Society, the 37th Besançon Conductors’ Competition in France and Boston University (Distinguished Alumni Award) as well as the Cultural Medallion – Singapore’s highest accolade in the arts. Born in Hangzhou, China, Shui studied composition at the Shanghai Conservatory and graduated from the Beijing Central Conservatory. He continued his graduate studies at Boston University while at the same time working closely with Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He has worked together with David Zinman as Conducting Affiliate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, as Associate Conductor to Neeme Järvi at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and with Kurt Masur at the New York Philharmonic and Pierre Boulez at The Cleveland Orchestra.

Dear music lover, Twenty-two years ago, Mr Goh Yew Lin asked me if I would be interested in becoming Music Director of the SSO. I was brimming with excitement at the prospect of building this young orchestra, and little did I know that I would go on to devote my best years to the SSO and to Singapore. My friendship with the SSO as Music Director began on 10 January 1997. Over the years, I have fallen in love with the incredible warmth of the people in Singapore. To our wonderful musicians: thank you for the deep and special bond we share. Together we have achieved so many milestones. In you I see the amazing passion and patience that has enabled us to create unforgettable musical moments. We have never stopped in our search for new ideas and interpretations, and our camaraderie is as fresh as the day we first made music together. To the past and present directors of the SSO Board: thank you. For your support of the orchestra, for guiding me, and for being leaders who know and love the music. To my colleagues in the SSO management, thank you for being a joy to work with. You have brightened my days in the orchestra with your friendship and creativity. To our wonderful audience: concert after concert, you have never failed to move me with your enthusiasm and applause. You who have followed me on this musical journey: thank you for being ever so open to exploring music with us, from Zhou Long and Kelly Tang to Tcherepnin and Mahler, the latter whose popularity in Singapore today would not have been imaginable 22 years ago. It has been a great privilege to serve the SSO and Singapore. I wish all of you the very best and thank you for your continued support of the SSO.

IN APPRECIATION The SSO receives financial support from the National Arts Council. However, the funding, while substantial, does not cover all our expenses. Revenue from tickets also brings in less than 10% of our budget. So every year, the SSO organises appeals and events to raise funds from the public. We organise a Benefit Dinner in the first half of each year and an Annual Appeal towards the end of the year. All the donations go towards supporting each new season comprising both ticketed and free concerts. Apart from the direct benefit that the donations bring to us, the donations are also matched by the Tote Board or the Cultural Matching Fund. This makes your donation doubly important to us. The SSO is a charity and an Institute of Public Character. This IPC status allows SSO donors to benefit from attractive tax benefits.

MAJOR GIFTS The SSO recognises major gifts in a variety of ways, including the naming of a position in the Orchestra. Endowing a Musician Chair associates your name with an orchestral position that has a special significance to you. The SSO Concertmaster Chair is named for Mr GK Goh. We would like to thank the Family and Friends of Mr Goh Geok Khim for their donations. We are especially grateful to Mr and Mrs Goh Yew Lin for their most generous donation. For more information about making a gift to the SSO, please write to peggykek@sso.org.sg

SUPPORT YOUR ORCHESTRA WITH A GIFT TODAY! When you make a donation to the orchestra, you’re helping to spread the love for music. You’re also supporting us in our mission to nurture talent and to enrich the diverse communities in our country. Every donation helps us to finance the cost of maintaining a professional orchestra, present outstanding concerts and run programmes like the Young Symphony Explorers. For almost 40 years, the SSO has shared the pleasure of fine music with people in concert halls, public parks, and schools. Chances are, you too have been inspired by the SSO in one way or another. Now you can share this wonderful experience with others.

A donation of - $100 can help subsidise a student’s concert ticket - $1,000 can help fund a guest musician’s accommodation - $10,000 can help replace a musician’s old instrument In return, you as an SSO donor could benefit from a tax deduction of 2.5 times the amount of your donation. Every dollar you give to the SSO is also matched by a grant of the same amount from the government’s Cultural Matching Fund. This means a large portion of SSO’s funding depends on the amount of funds we raise from donors like you.

THREE DREAMS FOR SINGAPORE BECOMING A CREATIVE GLOBAL CITY CREATIVE VIENNA

EXPLORING MUSIC IN OUR MODERN TIMES RED BALLOON SERIES

This season the SSO presents music asking “Who Are We?”, showcasing composers who have used folk tunes as a link to cultural identity, including works by Singaporeans Leong Yoon Pin and Kelly Tang, as well as Borodin, Rodrigo, Lutosławski, Bartók and Ravel. The SNYO joins the SSO in this exploration in a first-time sideby-side performance of Russian repertoire.

The vibrant flow of ideas in Creative Vienna can be seen in the masterworks of composers who found inspiration in its rich culture, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler and Mozart.

The classics of today were once the new music of yesterday. We raise a courageous red balloon, eager to explore and experiment, to lift these fresh sounds into the air. We let it fly, a witness to today’s struggles, today’s issues and today’s people, drawing the eyes and ears of the audience with its boldness. The SSO Red Balloon Series will feature works from the advent of musical modernity, circa 1913, to cutting-edge pieces written by living composers – a chance to hear some of the new music of today that will become the classics of tomorrow.

SEASON OVERVIEW

STRENGTHENING OUR IDENTITY “WHO ARE WE?”

THE AGE OF DISCOVERY In January 2019, the SSO kicks off Singapore’s nationwide marking of the 200 years since our founding. We help to shed light on The Age of Discovery that led to European exploration around the world, a period that accompanied the world’s transition to modernity and in many ways drove Singapore’s own journey. There is no concert hall more iconic for reflecting on the music of this period than the Victoria Concert Hall, where we will perform a series of three concerts featuring composers from the period, including Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. We close our classical music season joined by the Singapore Symphony Chorus, with Masaaki Suzuki conducting Beethoven’s magnificent Missa Solemnis, that he began writing in the year 1819.

YOUNG SYMPHONY EXPLORERS Going to a concert for the first time can be an unforgettable experience for a young person. For some kids, that first time could develop into a lifelong love of the arts. For others, it might even be where they decide that they want to be on the very same stage one day, playing their favourite instruments. We believe that every child should have access to music regardless of their family’s financial situation. That is why we have set up the Young Symphony Explorers programme. Through the programme we provide complimentary or discounted tickets to students and other children who would otherwise not have access to our concerts. Generous organisations like Temasek Foundation Nurtures, Swire, SEA Pte Ltd and Lim & Tan support the programme. Children who have benefited from our discounted tickets come from many organisations and schools including Child at Street 11, PPIS (Persatuan Pemudi Islam Singapura), and the YMCA. Our Young Symphony Explorers also come from schools at different corners of Singapore, including Blangah Rise Primary School, North View Secondary School and Yishun Junior College. Schools can avail of affordable tickets for students by contacting the Customer Experience team at +65 6602 4245 or ticketing@sso.org.sg. The Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) made its debut in 1980, under the direction of Choo Hoey, then Music Director of the SSO and now SSO Emeritus Conductor. In 1981, Singaporean conductor Lim Yau was appointed its Choral Director. Under his tutelage, the chorus has amassed a wide repertoire, performing such works as Macmillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum, Britten’s War Requiem, and Bach’s St John Passion, amongst many others. The chorus is recognised as one of the finest in the region and one of the few symphony choruses in Southeast Asia. It has performed under the baton of renowned conductors such as Peter Erdei, Eric Ericsson, John Nelson, Claus Peter Flor, Okko Kamu, and Masaaki Suzuki.

LAN SHUI’S FAREWELL

Today, presiding Choral Director Eudenice Palaruan leads the choristers, who come from a myriad of nationalities and backgrounds. In 2017, the chorus went on its first tour with the SSO, performing at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur.

SSO NATIONAL DAY CONCERT Formed in 2006, the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir has established itself as the leading children’s choir in Singapore. With over 200 members aged 9 to 18, the choir seeks to enrich young singers through holistic choral training that nurtures artistic growth and personal development. The children’s choir tours internationally, and has performed great choral masterpieces with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, with distinguished conductors such as Lim Yau, Claus Peter Flor, Sofi Jeannin, FrançoisXavier Roth and Julie Desbordes. It has performed at the Philharmonie de Paris in a collaborative performance of Berlioz’s Te Deum with the Maîtrise de Radio France, as well as at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur, partnering the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in concert. The choir has commissioned and performed Singaporean works by Chen Zhangyi, Lee Chin Sin, and Cultural Medallion winner Kelly Tang. In Singapore, the choir has an active performing calendar, having performed at the Istana for the prestigious Cultural Medallion & Young Artist Award and shared the stage with critically acclaimed The King’s Singers. The choir released their first recording, And I’ll Sing Once More, to mark its 10th anniversary in 2016.

An up-and-coming addition to the SSO’s choruses, the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir was formed in 2016 to complement the orchestra with a chorus of young people’s voices required in many scores. It is a platform for young adults to pursue their interest in choral singing, as well as enable mature members of the children’s choir to continue their development in classical choral singing. Comprising Singapore’s finest young choristers aged between 17 and 28, the youth choir explores the best of different musical worlds and styles, ranging from orchestral to a cappella masterpieces, and spanning the Renaissance to 21st century contemporary offerings. SNYO IN CONCERT

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) occupies a special place in Singapore’s music community, having produced a strong alumni that have joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and other community orchestras in Singapore as well as teaching the next generation of budding musicians. The SNYO is recognised by the Ministry of Education as a National Project of Excellence. Entry into the SNYO is by a rigorous audition process. Members in mainstream secondary schools with sustained involvement in the SNYO will have their participation in the orchestra recognised in lieu of a school-based Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). Since April 2015, the SNYO started a new chapter with its management being transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, allowing the SNYO to draw on the knowledge and expertise of Singapore's national orchestra. The SNYO is made up of over 180 talented young musicians aged 10 to 21, representing more than 60 schools across Singapore. Under its talent development programme, selected members receive individual tutoring from professional musicians including SSO musicians.
