S ing a p or e S y mp hon y Or c he s t r a ‘A fine display of orchestral bravado for the SSO and Shui’ The Guardian
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the
673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans alltime favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996. Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five‑city tour of
Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. Notable SSO releases under BIS include a Rachmaninov series, a “Seascapes” album, two Debussy discs “La Mer” and “Jeux”, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Diana Damrau, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham.

JEAN SIB ELIU S (18 6 5 -1957 ) Finlandia, Op. 26
8’00
The heartfelt and mighty Finlandia Hymn is widely acknowledged by Finns as Finland’s second national anthem. In its original form from 1899, it was the finale of seven pieces performed as a musical backdrop to a series of tableaux depicting scenes from Finnish history. These still dramatic scenes were part of a Press Celebrations event, a thinly disguised nationalistic protest against increasing press censorship from the Russian Empire, which Finland was subject to until her independence. With subsequent performances the following year, this piece quickly became the musical symbol of Finnish nationalism. To avoid Russian crackdown, it was performed under many alternative names at various concerts, from the inconspicuous “Impromptu” to an unpretentious “A Scandinavian Choral March” to the frivolous “Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring”. Later reworked into Finlandia, the tone poem is formed from Tableau 5 “The Great Hostility” and Tableau 6 “Finland Awakes”. As the titles suggest, the work begins in a mood of tragedy and depression, as Finland struggles under the yoke of oppression. But Finnish sisu - resilience, stoic determination, courage and grit - soon surge to the surface. The Finns cast aside their chains and Finlandia is born. On 6 December 1917, 18 years after this musical awakening and one hundred years ago today, Finland declared its independence. Oi Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs koittaa. Finland, behold, your day is dawning.

Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto is one of the most prominent Finnish musicians of his generation, active in all three aspects of music-making. As a composer, Kuusisto has written in a great variety of genres, including chamber, vocal and orchestral. The Canine Kalevala, Kuusisto’s “opera for the whole family” became massively popular at the famous Savonlinna Opera Festival and elsewhere. His next opera Jää (“Ice”), based on the award-winning book by Ulla-Lena Lundberg and commissioned by the Finnish National Opera, will be premiered in January 2019. Besides the Violin Concerto performed tonight, Kuusisto has written concertos for piano (2015/16) and bassoon (2017). His Trumpet Concerto was premiered in the United States in November 2017. Written in 2011, Kuusisto’s Violin Concerto is written for and dedicated to his friend and musical colleague, tonight’s soloist Elina Vähälä. Both have worked with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra (Sinfonia Lahti), with whom tonight’s conductor Okko Kamu was Chief Conductor from 2011-2016. Kamu himself was Principal Guest Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra from 1995-2017. By turns mysterious and dramatic, melodious and moody, playful and martial, the concerto was initially conceived as a concertante work involving unusual instruments - including electronic ones. This plan was later dropped in favour of a conventional violin concerto in three movements. However, the 15-minute first movement begins unusually with a mysterious, wandering cadenza which lays out the themes it is based upon. Tension and pace builds, leading to the galloping entry of the orchestra. The solo violin soon returns in a flowing, lyrically pensive mood. No programmatic content was intended by the composer in the rhapsodic musings between soloist and orchestra, which culminate in an energetic rush. The music continues without a break into the 8-minute second movement. The Lento marking describes the meditative, ethereal atmosphere that builds into an impassioned passage of drama and urgency, eventually dying away quietly.
The percussion instruments, which have been embellishing the score throughout the concerto, come into the fore in the 7-minute final movement. Wood blocks, snare and timpani beat out rhythms as the soloist scurries in a series of spirited jaunts. Sometimes belligerent, sometimes playful, but always vigorous, the orchestra strides confidently into the final coda, with soloist having the final word and leading the score to a dramatic finish.

JEAN S IB ELIU S Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82
30’00
Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony was premiered by the composer conducting the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra on 8 December 1915 — his 50th birthday. By this time, Sibelius was a national hero. After the performance, his friend and champion Robert Kajanus proclaimed: “As far as our Finnish music is concerned, it scarcely existed when Jean Sibelius struck his first powerful chords… a tremendous sound arose from the wilderness... Finnish music’s mighty springs came bursting forth... Jean Sibelius alone showed the way.” It is easy to dismiss Sibelius as a “melodic” composer, a simple “Romantic” tone painter of nature. But nature’s apparent simplicity is complex, yet profoundly logical; so is Sibelius’ unique symphonic process and the way he depicts nature in music. Entering a new phase of life as a composer after his austere Fourth, Sibelius’ Fifth is a work that heavily preoccupied his thoughts as a symphonist. No other symphony of his endured such extensive revision. Two later versions were made post-1915, reducing the original four-movement structure into three by joining the first two. The final version of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 was completed in 1919, the year after the Great War. The first movement begins with classic “dawn music” – a serene horn greeting with woodwind bird-calls answering. This unassuming rising-and-falling “dawn motif” is the basis of the entire symphony. As the mood of anticipation unfolds, the motivic material is developed into a swinging figure that foretells the finale. Trumpets herald the dawn. Gradually, the music begins exploring its harmonic edges, becoming misty and ominous. It never sounds completely “modern”, and yet is clearly unconventional in its strange, otherworldly progression of material. The strings quieten into wisps of fluttering chromatic chaos as Sibelius fragments his motifs and subjects them to organic metamorphosis. A lonely bassoon wanders across this star-lit limbo. There is no real melody, no true subject. This is no Romantic tune, nor pastoral melody. In the darkness of the primeval Finnish forest, time is suspended in awe and trepidation. Light and shadow lengthen, phrases ebb and grow, building momentum. The dawn motif blazes forth in full sunlight again. A subtle shift of gears takes place as the first movement seamlessly melds into the original second movement with a miraculous change of meter right in the middle of a phrase.
This scherzo-like section gathers pace, laying the ground for the trombones to triumphantly re-state the dawn motif in the home key of E-flat. Trumpets lead the conclusion in a splendid tempest of unstoppable energy. The second movement is a tender Andante mosso, quasi allegretto, its title a hint of its deceptive tempo, feeling neither slow nor fast. Using a five-note rhythmic motif, Sibelius weaves a variety of lyrical themes to create a mood of idyllic nostalgia. Hints of the next movement’s “Swan Hymn” appear inconspicuously on the basses and brass, and the movement ends amidst heartfelt yearning. One day, on his routine walk through the countryside, Sibelius watched as 16 swans flew overhead, a sight which took his breath away: “One of my greatest experiences! My God, what beauty: they circled over me for a long time. Disappeared into the hazy sun like a silver ribbon, which glittered from time to time. Their cries the same woodwind timbre as the cranes but without any tremolo. The swans are closer to trumpets though there is an element of the sarrusophone… Nature’s mystery and life’s angst! The Fifth Symphony’s finale-theme: Legato in the trumpets!” This encounter with nature’s soul-searching beauty inspired the most famous passage of the Fifth Symphony - the finale’s transcendent “Swan Hymn” swinging gracefully on horns, soon joined by a soaring woodwind melody filled with faraway longing. As the swans ascend into ever higher spheres, Sibelius modulates the majestic heartache of E-flat into the glory of C major, creating one of the most magnificent and life-affirming climaxes in music. Then, misterioso — muted violins create a shimmering field of light as themes from the Swan Hymn are revisited. Basses intone deep, earthy undercurrents that gently pulse beneath, evoking “nature’s mystery”. Halfway through the finale, the mood turns melancholy once again, to life’s angst, perhaps to humanity in the year after the Great War, and feelings of hope following the birth of Finnish independence. The Fifth Symphony draws together its full strength, its brilliance heightening, its very life staggering with power. The brass tear apart the angst between light and darkness, forging from the Swan Hymn one last paean to life: Legato in the trumpets! In one of the most unique endings in music, the symphony concludes with six massive chords, each a final cadence separated by silence. Listen to these silences. Close your eyes. Hear the cosmic blackness between stars, the clear stillness between sky and lake, the watchful hush between leaves rustling in the winds, and the burgeoning serenity between the wing-beats of swans.
